Soft Robotics: Fiber Reinforced Soft Pneumatic Multidirectional Manipulators, Designing, Fabricating, And Testing, Mohammad Holdar
Soft Robotics: Fiber Reinforced Soft Pneumatic Multidirectional Manipulators, Designing, Fabricating, And Testing, Mohammad Holdar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Traditional robots are made from hard materials like hard plastic or metal and consist of regular rigid mechanical parts. Using those parts has some limitations, like limited dexterity and lack of flexibility. Some of these limitations could be avoided through using a compliant material, because it has higher flexibility and dexterity. It is also safer to be in direct contact with humans. This thesis studies soft pneumatic manipulators (SPMs) that move in multi degrees of freedom (MDOF), which makes them able to perform various functions. The study will include designing, fabricating, and testing three different SPMs with different taper angles …
Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Neural Fields In A Spherical Cortex With General Connectivity, Vahid Tayefeh
Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Neural Fields In A Spherical Cortex With General Connectivity, Vahid Tayefeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The human brain consists of billions of neurons and these neurons pool together in groups at different scales. On one hand, these neural entities tend to behave as single units and on the other hand show collective macroscopic patterns of activity. The neural units communicate with each other and process information over time. This communication is through small electrical impulses which at the macroscopic scale are measurable as brain waves. The electric field that is produced collectively by macroscopic groups of neurons within the brain can be measured on the surface of the skull via a brain imaging modality called …

The study consisted of two phases, each involving the determination of the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity using the conventional method and also a nondestructive ultrasonic pulse velocity method (Pundit Lab). Phase 1 involved 7-day curing followed by 30 W-D cycles, while Phase 2 included 28-day cured samples subjected to 15 W-D cycles. It …
Student Perception Of Online Instructors At A Florida Public University, William Willett Ballard
Student Perception Of Online Instructors At A Florida Public University, William Willett Ballard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to determine differences in online student perception of the quality of instruction between online instructors who did and did not complete faculty training for online instruction. There has been very little research identifying the factors influencing online students perception on quality of instruction, specifically at Florida public institutions. This research is important in establishing if public universities should require some level of training before an instructor can teach online. Experiencing poor quality of instruction can negatively impact an online student academically, which can, in turn, be detrimental to a university’s student retention and graduation …
Student Perception Of Professors’ Teaching Attributes In Post-Secondary Hospitality Management Degree Programs, Oren Hertz

The Associations Of Little Blue Heron Prey And Vegetation Communities In Two Subtropical Coastal Ecosystems, Emilie R. Kohler
The Associations Of Little Blue Heron Prey And Vegetation Communities In Two Subtropical Coastal Ecosystems, Emilie R. Kohler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Shallow water availability coupled with anthropogenic degradation of seagrass beds limits wading bird food resources in dynamic coastal ecosystems. Identifying prey species critical to wading bird reproductive success and the environmental drivers of key prey species abundance is important for understanding how environmental stressors influence prey and change the quality of foraging patches. Little Blue Herons (Egretta caerulea) are reportedly generalists eating insects, crustaceans, and fish; however, the proportions of prey items in the diet may shift spatially and temporally from freshwater to marine systems during breeding and non-breeding periods. I investigated prey selection by Little Blue Herons in Florida …

The Assessment Of Functional Abilities In The Diagnosis Of Mci And Dementia In A Culturally Diverse Sample, Fernanda Ponce De Leon Arruda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Previous studies suggested that the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ-10) has minimal ethnic bias and that a shorter version (FAQ-6) can equally diagnose MCI and dementia. Objective: We analyzed whether FAQ-6 is similar to FAQ-10 in diagnosing MCI and dementia. We examined their applicability across European Americans (EA) and Hispanic Americans, and how scores correlated to beta amyloid. Method: 222 participants (116 EA) completed a neuropsychological battery, FAQ, and PET scans, and were classified as cognitively normal (CN), MCI, or dementia. The diagnostic capacity of FAQ-10 and FAQ-6 were compared for the total sample and across ethnic groups. Scores were correlated …
The Dark Heart Of Azeroth: The Deep Rooted Colonialist Ideologies Of Popular Fantasy, Austin R. Lang
The Dark Heart Of Azeroth: The Deep Rooted Colonialist Ideologies Of Popular Fantasy, Austin R. Lang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Popular fantasy is often populated by members of different species, such as dwarves, elves, and orcs. Much of the narrative structure of the genre comes from the interactions and conflicts between these species, with many of them serving as stand ins for real world culture. This has become the underlying fabric of fantasy fiction and has deep resonance in our contemporary pop culture. However, many of these depictions are founded on colonialist constructions of race and otherness, turning the genre into a medium for reproducing racist ideologies, often unconsciously. This thesis examines the origins and trajectory of this trend by …

The Association Of Mindfulness On Executive Functioning (Ef) In College Students, Marvin ‘Forrest’ Eugene Norman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Recent research has shown mindfulness practices to be correlated with traits frequently associated with high Executive Functioning (EF) individuals such as greater attention to specific tasks, greater working memory capacity, and the improved ability to inhibit behaviors or emotions. These three traits are highly correlated with each other, and provide an accurate assessment of an individual’s level of Executive Functioning. This study was designed to examine how individual traits associated with Mindfulness such as ‘non-judgement’ can influence attention, working memory and inhibition. This study used three self-administered questionnaires to assess traits associated with mindful individuals and three EF tests to …
The Contribution Of Depression To The Diagnosis Of Mci And Dementia In A Culturally Diverse Sample Of The United States, Merike K. Lang
The Contribution Of Depression To The Diagnosis Of Mci And Dementia In A Culturally Diverse Sample Of The United States, Merike K. Lang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Depression is associated with higher severity of memory disorders and has been shown to predict lower levels of cognitive functioning in those diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or dementia. Yet, little is known about this association cross-culturally, particularly between Hispanics and European Americans. This study demonstrates that although levels of depression differed significantly across diagnostic group, Hispanics and European Americans were similar in levels of depression at each diagnosis. However, only for the European American group did depression levels predict lower scores in confrontational naming and semantic memory. Additionally, exploratory analyses of the entire sample demonstrated that lower depression …
The Development Of Synchronous Vocalizations And Behaviors In Juvenile Male Wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Alyson J. Myers
The Development Of Synchronous Vocalizations And Behaviors In Juvenile Male Wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Alyson J. Myers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The ability of adult wild Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) to synchronize vocalizations and behaviors has been found to be a key factor in overcoming much larger bottlenose dolphins during interspecies aggression (Cusick & Herzing, 2014). Furthermore, an adult baseline of behaviors and vocalizations during aggressive events containing synchrony has been established (Myers, Herzing, & Bjorklund, 2017). The present study examines juvenile aggression that contains bouts of synchrony to look at the development of this valuable skill. Differences of duration between adult and juvenile synchronous bouts, lag sequential analyses, frequencies of behavioral classes depending on the age class of the …
The Coordination Dynamics Of Multiple Agents, Mengsen Zhang
The Coordination Dynamics Of Multiple Agents, Mengsen Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A fundamental question in Complexity Science is how numerous dynamic processes coordinate with each other on multiple levels of description to form a complex whole - a multiscale coordinative structure (e.g. a community of interacting people, organs, cells, molecules etc.). This dissertation includes a series of empirical, theoretical and methodological studies of rhythmic coordination between multiple agents to uncover dynamic principles underlying multiscale coordinative structures. First, a new experimental paradigm was developed for studying coordination at multiple levels of description in intermediate-sized (N = 8) ensembles of humans. Based on this paradigm, coordination dynamics in 15 ensembles was examined experimentally, …
The Effects Of Msra And Msrb In Anoxia Tolerance In Aging Drosophila Melanogaster, Nirthieca Suthakaran
The Effects Of Msra And Msrb In Anoxia Tolerance In Aging Drosophila Melanogaster, Nirthieca Suthakaran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Drosophila melanogaster tolerates several hours of anoxia (the absence of oxygen) by entering a protective coma. A burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is produced when oxygen is reintroduced to the cells. ROS causes oxidative damage to critical cellular molecules, which contribute to aging and development of certain agerelated conditions. The amino acid, methionine, is susceptible to oxidation, although this damage can be reversed by methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msr). This project investigates the effect of Msr-deficiency on anoxia tolerance in Drosophila throughout the lifespan of the animal. The data show that the time for recovery from the protective comma as …
The Dynamics Of Implicit Attitudes, Joseph Michael Williams
The Dynamics Of Implicit Attitudes, Joseph Michael Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
How do people allocate responsibility for inter-racial conflict (Black vs. White) under ambiguous circumstances? We tested the hypothesis that responsibility allocation reflects people’s implicit racial bias—with greater blame allocated to the Black protagonist by observers with stronger implicit anti-Black bias—but only when they identify the conflict in low-level terms (i.e., the specific momentary actions of the individuals). When observers identify the conflict in high-level terms (e.g., the intentions of the individuals), they are conscious of their biases and can suppress them in favor of less prejudicial judgments. White and Black participants read or listened to an ambiguous inter-racial conflict narrative, …
The Effects Of A Brief Culturally Tailored Thai Mindfulness Intervention On Stress, Anxiety, And Mindfulness In Thai Parents Of Children With Developmental Disabilities, Manika Petcharat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Parents of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) often suffer from psychological distress stemming from their children’s behavioral problems. One cause of distress is their challenge to accept their children’s illnesses mindfully. A culturally tailored and readily accessible mindfulness intervention may increase mindfulness and reduce distress. Also, there were insufficient studies regarding culturally relevant mindfulness trainings that have been conducted in Thailand. Therefore, a Brief Culturally Tailored Thai Mindfulness intervention (BCTTMi) was developed, merging the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn with Buddhist philosophy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the BCTTMi on stress, anxiety, and mindfulness in …

Time-Course Of Muscle Damage And Performance Fatigue In The Squat, Bench Press, And Deadlift In Resistance Trained Men, Daniel Belcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This research examined the time-course of muscle damage in the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Ten resistance-trained males performed four sets to failure with 80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) for each exercise on three separate weeks. Swelling, range of motion (ROM), delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and average concentric velocity (ACV) were assessed pretraining and at five timepoints post-training: -0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. Swelling (p<0.01) increased immediately post-training, and DOMS (p<0.01) increased at 24 hours post-training in the bench press condition. Additionally, DOMS increased at 48 hours in both squat and deadlift conditions (p<0.01). Squat and deadlift elevated CK immediately post-training (p<0.01), but LDH only increased in the squat post-training. Immediately post in the bench press ACV was decreased (p<0.01) along with in the squat for up to 72 hours (p<0.01), however, ACV did not change following the deadlift (p>0.05).
