Publications and Research
Background: Sleep disturbance is a significant issue, particularly for patients with advanced terminal illness. Currently, there are no practice-based recommended approaches for managing sleep and circadian disruptions in this population. To address this gap, a cross-sectional focus group study was performed engaging 32 staff members at four hospices/end-of-life programs in three demographically diverse counties in New York State.
Methods: Participants responded to structured open-ended questions. Responses were transcribed and subjected to qualitative content analysis. The themes and recommendations for improved practice that emerged were tabulated using Atlas TI qualitative software.
Results: This report details the experiences of hospice and end-of-life …
The "Mathematics Problem": A Plymouth Foundation Year Case Study, Mj Craven, J Sharp
The "Mathematics Problem": A Plymouth Foundation Year Case Study, Mj Craven, J Sharp
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Research indicates the transition from school mathematics to university-level STEM courses is often problematic, leading to issues with student satisfaction and retention (the “Mathematics Problem”). An increasing number of HEIs are establishing foundation years in an effort to ameliorate this problem. Undergraduate Mathematics cohorts at Plymouth often contain a sizeable number of exfoundation year students, meaning that efforts to enhance student foundation year experience are vital to student satisfaction, retention and further recruitment. This paper is a report mid-way through a two-year project to examine a partially-flipped learning approach to improve foundation year retention and mathematical knowledge of those progressing …

Transitioning With Grace: Improving Quality Of Life For Comfort Care Patients In The Intensive Care Unit, Melissa Ashley
Transitioning With Grace: Improving Quality Of Life For Comfort Care Patients In The Intensive Care Unit, Melissa Ashley
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The primary aim of this project was to develop and execute a standard protocol of interventions for comfort care patients on a medical intensive care unit. Staff at a 15 bed MICU at a Midwest urban teaching hospital from June 1 until August 11, 2018 were trained to execute a standardized protocol of interventions for comfort care patients. Seventeen MICU patients who transitioned to comfort care were offered a standardized set of evidence-based interventions, after staff attended educational in-services on providing high quality end of life (EOL) care. Checklists were used to determine intervention compliance. Pre-project and post-project surveys were …

My Story‐Your Story: A Pastoral Response For 21st-Century Catechesis, Timone Davis
My Story‐Your Story: A Pastoral Response For 21st-Century Catechesis, Timone Davis
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Many Catholics experience catechetical challenges as they try to keep their faith growing in the midst of “new” truths, spiritual indifference and dwindling Mass attendance. This is especially true for Black Catholics who strive to balance racism in the world and racism in the Church. This article offers a pastoral response that uses story— telling and listening—for catechesis. Using My Story-Your Story as a method of storytelling, the article expounds on how story is the foundation of communication and how it can open catechetical endeavors for the 21st century. My Story-Your Story acknowledges the role our experiences, traditions and culture …
Church Conflict In The Atlanta-Rome District: Developing A Systematic Approach To Conflict And Membership Attrition, James C. Clements
Church Conflict In The Atlanta-Rome District: Developing A Systematic Approach To Conflict And Membership Attrition, James C. Clements
Masters Theses
The decline in church membership and attendance of the 22 churches and 18 ministries of the Atlanta-Rome District (ARD) of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church has dramatically impacted the ministries and effectiveness of the Atlanta-Rome District churches in conducting what Jesus Christ commanded in the Great Commission. The congregations whose membership once boasted governmental officials and civil rights icons have all but dwindled to a faithful few that continue to support the Spiritual and fiduciary obligations of the local churches. The rise of non-denominational churches with a more contemporary style of worship as well as internal conflicts within the …
