Development Of The Global Engineering Programming Model: A Participatory, Mixed-Methods Approach, Scott C. Streiner, Mary Elizabeth Besterfield-Sacre
Journal of International Engineering Education
Over the past few decades, higher education institutions have emphasized global education as a core aspect of their strategic goals, yet a gap exists in implementation at the school level, particularly in engineering. As engineering schools invest in internationalizing their programs, research is needed regarding key strategic areas and their relationship to sustained programming efforts. This study uses a participatory, integrative mixed-methods approach to develop an operational framework for global strategies, policies, and programs. A thematic, qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews followed by a group concept mapping activity was conducted with directors of study abroad and vice provosts of global …

Understanding Long-Standing Belief Systems In Business: A Qualitative Study Of The Equine Industry, Robyn Lord
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Change management is a highly researched topic. With industry changing at record speed, it is inevitable that corporations will engage in a change management endeavor. As humans innately resist change at first exposure, corporations strive to acquire knowledge in adoption. It may not be enough to understand status quo proponents, but rather their underlying long-standing belief systems which may be affecting how they view change. What makes an employee resist corporate change? Most studies conclude that humans will resist innately. This research dives into the unique environment of the equine industry to uncover how long-standing belief systems contribute to adoption …

Sexual Harassment Bystander Intervention Program: Targeting Leaders To Enhance Organizational Culture, Caitlin C. Meyer, Alexandra Zelin
Sexual Harassment Bystander Intervention Program: Targeting Leaders To Enhance Organizational Culture, Caitlin C. Meyer, Alexandra Zelin
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Sexual harassment has become a prominent issue in workplaces and society as a whole. However, to effectively address the issue of sexual harassment and identify methods to reduce it in the workplace, it needs to be clearly defined and understood. Sexual harassment manifests in three forms which often overlap and are antecedents of one another: gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion (The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, NASEM, 2018). Gender harassment is the most common form of sexual harassment and is characterized by crude behavior, hostility, objectification, and exclusion rooted in the basis of gender (NASEM, …

Winning War In A Globalized World: Utilizing Women & Gender Initiatives In 21st Century Conflict, Emerald M. Archer
Winning War In A Globalized World: Utilizing Women & Gender Initiatives In 21st Century Conflict, Emerald M. Archer
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Three thousand years of recorded history has reserved warfighting for men and, in 2017, we continue to rely on ideas of hegemonic masculinity to understand who participates in war. However, women have played a vital role in the context of warfare from its inception. In the twenty-first century, women’s service is critical to the types of conflicts militaries regularly confront – specifically, counter insurgency and peacekeeping operations. The intersection of gender and security today provides new routes to peaceful prosperity globally. Applying gender initiatives to militaries – whether it means creating a gender balanced force, the integration of women into …

Special Education Teacher Turnover & School Leadership, Patricia Moore
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Turnover and retention among special education teachers (SETs) continues to be a problem for many school districts. Studies suggest that the leadership approach of school leaders is a key factor influencing SETs’ decision to stay or leave their jobs. This qualitative phenomenological case study was designed to gain a better understanding of eight SETs’ experiences with their school leadership. In-depth one-to-one interviews, focus group interviews, and participant journaling were employed to collect rich narratives of SETs’ lived experiences. The data gathered from this study clearly showed that servant leadership, in which leaders are attuned to the emotional and professional needs …

The middle school concept, aimed at creating a more developmentally responsive learning environment for young adolescents, gained a stronghold in the later part of the 20th century. Proponents of this concept have argued continually for the holistic implementation of its six key characteristics if its benefits are to be realized. These characteristics include: (a) a challenging, integrative, and exploratory curriculum; (b) varied teaching and learning approaches; (c) assessment and evaluation that promote learning; (d) flexible organizational structures (i.e., including the physical space, scheduling, and grouping of students and teachers); (e) programs and policies that foster health, wellness and safety; and …
Investigating Mpm-Iii, Sofa And Delta Sofa Scoring Systems As Predictors Of Mortality At A Tertiary Hospital In Nairobi, Kenya: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Lilian Lukoko
Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology
Background: Despite major advances, management of critically ill patients worldwide is associated with high mortality rates. Assessment of disease severity is crucial in the analysis of ICU mortality. Although a variety of severity of illness scoring systems have been developed for this assessment and validated across Europe and the USA, few studies exist to show support of their utilization in African countries. There is conflicting evidence regarding the most reliable severity of illness scoring system suitable for resource limited countries as their mortality predictive values differ with different populations. SOFA is already in use at the AKUHN ICU and has …

For more than a decade, many states have been developing policies that prioritize integrated employment as the first choice and preferred outcome for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). Collectively, these actions have been united under the framework of Employment First, a commitment by states and state IDD agencies to the propositions that all individuals with IDD (a) are capable of performing work in typical integrated employment settings, (b) should receive as a matter of state policy employment-related services and supports as a priority over other facility-based and non-work day services, and (c) should be paid at minimum or prevailing wage …

Service Innovation In The Cloud: Implications For Strategy Development, Robert R. Harmon, Enrique G. Castro-Leon
Service Innovation In The Cloud: Implications For Strategy Development, Robert R. Harmon, Enrique G. Castro-Leon
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Cloud enterprises have shifted from linear to networked business models through a value transformation process centered on the development of multisided service platforms. These platforms facilitate service exchange and value cocreation by enabling three essential transitions: 1. from control to orchestration of enterprise resources, 2. from internal optimization to external interactions, and 3. from customer value to ecosystem value. Innovative service transformation is most in evidence with enterprises that are native cloud companies or companies that have more rapidly and effectively adopted ecosystem-based service platforms such as Netflix, Google, Facebook, Uber and Airbnb. Service ecosystems enable the critical processes for …

Novel Approach To Managing Technological Entrepreneurship Using A Model-Based Systems Approach To Develop Low Cost Earth Orbiting Satellites, Gary Langford, Jeffery Carpenter, Ian Watkins, Brock Marsh, Lucas Beaulieu
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The ability to send low cost satellites into space has changed the satellite industry and vastly opened up the use of satellites to transform data into information for individuals, organizations, commercial companies, and governments. This information can be corroborated with other sources of data to evaluate the availability of precious resources, e.g., potable water, agriculture; to forecast upcoming famines or diseases; and to perform mapping, communications, and competitive analyses. The cost of owning a satellite is less than 100,000(usingcommercialparts)to1,000 (built by school kids). Launch costs are tens of thousands of dollars, which can be eliminated through subsidies. Compare these costs …

Despite significant increases in the growth of online education, a review of research reveals few studies of faculty perceptions of the use of technology in classrooms in higher education. Research can explore and illuminate how to bridge the gap between faculty perceptions and institutional goals and objectives for online programs. The study at hand presents the views of full-time and adjunct faculty across the colleges, both on- and off-campus, and the online community, at the University of La Verne, a private Tier II doctoral degree-granting institution located in Southern California.

Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning
High profile police shootings around the country have caused states and communities to examine how to improve the quality of policing. For example, reports from expert panels convened by Ohio’s Governor and the Ohio Attorney General both recommended expanding law enforcement training requirements as a way to enhance the quality of policing. However, the ability to improve policing through better in-service faces two key obstacles: - Lack of resources: Most police departments do not have the personnel or financial resources to provide regular, high quality training . Eighty-seven percent of police departments have 25 or fewer officers, which means they …

Multilingualism In Counselor Education And Human Services Professionals: Implications For A New Training Paradigm, Roberto Swazo, Dorota Celinska
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
This study analyzes the relationships among the three distinct levels of language and cultural-linguistic professional competences. A total of 483 participants from three U.S. and one Central American university representing the fields of counseling, social work, family services, and psychology were surveyed. The results suggest that there is a large multilingual training deficit among human service providers in the U.S. Training programs need to make curricular revisions to include bi/multilingual training consistent with multilingual clientele. Recommendations for culturally-embedded and non-native language use are provided to increase cultural-linguistic competences among counselor education trainees.

Interpersonal Problems Of The Nonprofit Workforce: Evaluating The Wounded Healer As The Reason For High Turnover, Crystal A. Evans, Judy Thomas, Sharon Macdonnell
Journal of Ideology
The research goal was to identify a potential explanation for the high levels of turnover in nonprofit organizations. First, nonprofit employees’ levels of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) were evaluated and found to be significantly higher than for for-profit and government employees. This phenomenon could speak to a self-selection bias whereas wounded healers are drawn into the helping fields because of some perceived personal benefit they gain or because they might feel they can offer something more given their experiences. Having higher ACEs has been linked to job instability, and could be a contributing factor in the sector's turnover rates. Nonprofit …

Leaders Supporting Employees Through Organizational Change, Melinda Palmer
Leaders Supporting Employees Through Organizational Change, Melinda Palmer
M.S. in Leadership
When a change is proposed, an employee’s resistance can be detrimental to the effort. This research focused on determining the best ways leaders can support employees through organizational change. Common mistakes leaders make are poor communication and not understanding the emotional response employees experience. A change process involves more than the change itself. This research provides leaders with insight into employees’ experience during a change initiative. Awareness could minimize barriers to a change initiative. Recommendations include leaders developing a change management plan that includes identifying key stakeholders affected by the change and assessing for possible barriers before implementing the change …
