Innovation In Educational And Societal Transformation: The Macarthur Foundation, Jesuit Business Schools, And The World, James A. F. Stoner
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
On June 2, 2016, the MacArthur Foundation announced a competition awarding $100 million to a single project that would contribute toward solving a significant societal problem. Six weeks later, in Nairobi, Kenya, the members of the annual meeting of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools’ World Forum unanimously passed a resolution requesting the submission of an application that utilized the resources of the global network of Jesuit business schools in addressing the inter-connected problem of global unsustainability, social injustice, and poverty. This article reports on the resulting 2016 application as well as on a possible 2019 version that builds …
Creating Pedagogy To Integrate Sustainability And The Arts, Nancy Bertaux, Kaleel Skeirik
Creating Pedagogy To Integrate Sustainability And The Arts, Nancy Bertaux, Kaleel Skeirik
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
The creation of a sustainable world urgently requires managers of organizations to consider large-scale changes in the practices and policies of social and economic institutions. Compelling scientific and economic information on the environment, while the basis of much dialogue in higher education and in the public sphere, has failed to motivate adequate progress to date. In this article, therefore, we present an original theoretical model for a pedagogy that brings together the arts and sustainability. We postulate that motivation or “heart” to initiate such actions for the environment and persist in the face of societal and institutional inertia can come …

Using The Business Classroom To Help Fe Y Alegría- Bolivia Schools With Analytics And Pattern Visualizatio, Kathleen Campbell Garwood, Joao Neiva De Figueiredo, Hayley F. Miles, Miguel Angel Marca Barrientos
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This article describes the analytical support a Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) data mining class provided over the past three academic years to Fe y Alegría in Bolivia (FyAB), a Jesuit-sponsored institution dedicated to the education of the poor and looking for a feasible model that could help them identify which students and schools have the most need. SJU undergraduates, working without viable socio-economic household income information for each student in the database, had to be creative in assisting FyAB using only survey data provided by Bolivian school-age pupils. Working in consultation with FyAB school representatives, their goal for each iteration …

Institutionalization Of Performance Management System In A Malaysian Local Government From The Perspective Of New Institutional Sociology, Farhana Hasbolah, Norhayati Mohd Alwi, Muslim Har Sani Mohamad
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of institutionalizing and implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in a Malaysian local government (LG). New Institutional Sociology (NIS) is used to understand the various institutional pressures faced by the organization during the development and implementation process of KPIs. An interpretive case-study strategy was applied. A total of 22 interviews have been conducted with the top management of the LG. The findings suggest that the evolution of the Performance Management System (PMS) in the LG was a result of the directions of government through the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and is …

Relevansi Nilai Pengungkapan Modal Intelektual Secara Voluntary Dan Involuntary (The Value Relevance Of Intellectual Capital Voluntary And Involuntary Disclosures), Dyna Rachmawati, C. Erna Susilawati
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
The main purpose of this study is to examine the value relevance of intellectual capital dis-closures voluntary and involuntary. Previous studies use annual reports as main source to determine intellectual capital disclosures voluntary. Annual report is less reliable, unobjective and contain advertorial. This study seeks for alternative sources to identify intellectual capital disclosures. To determine intellectual capital disclosures voluntary (involuntary), we use website (online business media). This study uses companies in Kompas 100 during January – December 2017 as research samples. Intellectual capital disclosures measured by content analysis method. The results show that intellectual capital disclosures both voluntary and involuntary …
Organizational Politics: Harmful Or Helpful?, Laura Porter Soares
Organizational Politics: Harmful Or Helpful?, Laura Porter Soares
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
Politics play a role in almost every organization – churches, schools, sports teams, and even volunteer organizations. However, the place where politics can directly impact people on a daily basis is the workplace.
Literature on organizational politics has historically focused on a negative view of politics. More recently, however, researchers have discovered that workplace politics is not inherently negative and can even include positive traits. This shift primarily began with the work of Gotsis and Kortezi in 2010 and 2011. As researchers sought to expand the perspective, they argued that organizational politics has the potential to be positive, as well. …

State Railway Of Thailand Employee Performance: A Structural Equation Model Analysis, Tanin Sivalai, Nuttawut Rojniruttikul
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Dropping from a peak of 88 million riders in 1994, Thailand’s state railway system today is only transporting 35 million passengers annually. Operations run at a loss, with infrastructure and aged equipment contributing to significant delays, and a continuing loss of passengers. However, in September 2017, a new 20-year US$81.57 billion plan was introduced to save the State Railway of Thailand [SRT] from its death spiral. Given the magnitude of the problem, this study aims to analyze employee performance of SRT civil servants. Using multi-stage random sampling, 360 individuals were selected; through a five-level, Likert type agreement scale questionnaire, 54 …
Not “That Kind Of Cop”: Exploring How Officers Adapt Approaches, Attitudes, And Self-Concepts In School Settings, Trisha N. Rhodes, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard
Not “That Kind Of Cop”: Exploring How Officers Adapt Approaches, Attitudes, And Self-Concepts In School Settings, Trisha N. Rhodes, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Prior research indicates school resource officers (SROs) perform an array of nontraditional police tasks and work in settings culturally distinct from street patrols. To thrive in SRO programs, police must adapt to these new roles and settings, likely affecting how they view themselves and their work. The present study examined how SROs view and respond to their work in schools through interviews and observations of 20 participants in four states. Findings revealed participants adopted policing strategies that facilitated communication and rapport. They generally viewed citizens positively and felt being an SRO made their work meaningful. Participants further described identities at …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Service providers working with transition-aged young people with mental health disorders require specialized research-based training to better meet their needs. A 10-module interactive online training program, Promoting Positive Pathways to Adulthood (PPPA), was developed to build service provider competencies to improve outcomes for the youth with whom they work. In total, 19 organizations participated in a longitudinal quasi-experimental study that compared training outcomes for participants receiving PPPA online training only (Group 1) with those receiving PPPA online training with team-based practice activities (Group 2). Most of the 63 service providers participating in the training were females, below 40 years, had …

Navigating The Storm: How Proficient Organizational Culture Promotes Clinician Retention In The Shift To Evidence-Based Practice, Nathaniel J. Williams, Rinad S. Beidas
Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Objective
Clinician turnover is a major concern as mental health systems and organizations invest substantial resources in the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). In this study, we identify malleable factors associated with reduced clinician turnover during a systemwide EBP implementation initiative. Specifically, we examine how proficient organizational culture (i.e., norms and behavioral expectations that clinicians prioritize improvement in client well-being and exhibit competence in up-to-date treatment practices), EBP implementation climate (i.e., perceptions that the organization’s policies, procedures, and practices support EBP use), and change in these organizational characteristics relate to clinician turnover during a system-wide EBP transformation.

An Ethical Model For Mandatory Reporting To Avoid Preventable Adverse Harm In Health Care, Kate A. Molchan
An Ethical Model For Mandatory Reporting To Avoid Preventable Adverse Harm In Health Care, Kate A. Molchan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the dissertation is to undertake an analysis in healthcare ethics that focuses upon organizational ethics to resolve problems related to medical error in the U.S. The ethical argument focuses upon justifying a model of mandatory reporting nationally. While countless others have argued in favor of the implementation of a mandatory reporting system, this dissertation presents its model through the lens of organizational theory; arguing first that healthcare organizations are ethically required to invest in patient safety. This premise frames the foundation for this dissertation's central argument; namely, that U.S. healthcare organizations have an ethical imperative to protect …
An Exploration Into Teachers' Perceptions Of School Leaders' Emotional Intelligence, Lindsey E. Caillouet
An Exploration Into Teachers' Perceptions Of School Leaders' Emotional Intelligence, Lindsey E. Caillouet
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Although the benefits of school leader emotional intelligence are well-known, leadership preparation programs lack training in emotional intelligence, thus calling for reform (Darling-Hammond, LaPointe, Meyerson, Orr, & Cohen, 2007; Johnson, Aiken, & Steggerada, 2005; Guerra & Pazet, 2016; Mills, 2009; Wallace, 2010). Emotional intelligence competencies, such as empathy, self-awareness and motivation, are closely aligned with components of transformational leadership theory, including idealized influence, individualized consideration, and inspirational motivation (Kumar, 2014). Highlighting these connections can provide guidance in identifying significant components of emotional intelligence. This study examined teachers’ perceptions of school leaders’ emotional intelligence in order to identify critical components of …
The Role Of Resilience Among K-12 Principals And Administrators Leading Transformational Change, Paige Evans Wescott
The Role Of Resilience Among K-12 Principals And Administrators Leading Transformational Change, Paige Evans Wescott
Education Dissertations
Abstract
The United States government holds high expectations for principals and administrators, as they are responsible for enacting significant change to actualize school improvement and meet national agendas. Schools have specific characteristics that make change extremely challenging to implement, and it is within this context that fostering resilience holds promise. This study was a quantitative, correlational study that looked critically at the relationship between self-perceived resilience and self-perceived transformational leadership among US principals and administrators in K-12 settings. Peer-reviewed research studies addressing resilience and transformational leadership in K-12 education have been minimal, although similar questions in research continue to be …
Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund
Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Challenges occur as research typically require “just in time” library support. The evolution of a research project may lead to sudden changes in coordination between different phases or steps in the project. Consequentially, the need for flexible research support conflicts the possibilities for long-term resource planning and coordination in the library. Moreover, these consequences will enlarge in a situation with resource scarcity. The aim of my presentation is to address some challenges posed by the time-logic inherent in research projects, based on experiences from the literature search team at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University (formerly HIOA, Oslo and Akershus University …
Courage And Co-Creation: Cultural Transformation In An Academic Library, Catherine Clark, Carolyn Hofmeester, Jane Pritchard
Courage And Co-Creation: Cultural Transformation In An Academic Library, Catherine Clark, Carolyn Hofmeester, Jane Pritchard
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
University libraries are transforming to be vibrant and distinctive online and physical spaces that, at their heart, continue to foster the connection of people to ideas. Rapid and continuously changing expectations of clients in the range of services that are delivered by libraries, combined with increasingly demanding resourcing environments are challenges for all library leaders. A library staff culture that is energised, focused and resilient is essential to ensure that service expectations are met or exceeded and that the library retains its valued position in the university. The University Librarian at Curtin University in Australia has initiated and led a …
Managing Data-Driven Change: A Model Of Unintended Deviation, Sang-Mun Ray Cho
Managing Data-Driven Change: A Model Of Unintended Deviation, Sang-Mun Ray Cho
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Data-driven change in hospitality gaming is desirable because of the opportunities to leverage untapped sources of rich and abundant marketing data. However, change has been difficult to implement as indicated by a lack of widespread adoption. Some have attributed these difficulties to cultural, structural, and other generic factors but these explanations fail to explain the root dynamics of data-driven change.
In this dissertation, it is theorized that data-driven change requires a particular form of social interaction, which are called analytical bonds (AB). The suggestion was that there is a sender of an analytic deliverable and a receiver that makes a …
Innovation, Entrepreneurship, And The Spirit Of Digital Capitalism, Collin Chua
Innovation, Entrepreneurship, And The Spirit Of Digital Capitalism, Collin Chua
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and the Spirit of Digital Capitalism,”Collin Chua analyzes the myth of innovation and the fantasy of entrepreneurship. The article draws on foundational perspectives regarding the spirit of capitalism established by Max Weber, later extended by Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello. The myth of innovation is interrogated, as innovation now operates as a rhetorical and managerial strategy that must be pursued in order to be competitive in today’s capitalist system. The fantasy of entrepreneurship is explored, as it serves as a coping mechanism for the fragmentation and erosion of traditional work arrangements and structures. The article …
A Longitudinal Assessment Of The Career Success Of Mentors In Developmental Networks, Andrew Julian Dhaenens
A Longitudinal Assessment Of The Career Success Of Mentors In Developmental Networks, Andrew Julian Dhaenens
Theses and Dissertations
Mentoring research contends that although the benefits of a mentoring relationship are primarily directed towards the protégés, mentoring relationships are mutually beneficial and provide substantial career benefits to the mentor. Despite increased attention on mentoring in development networks, the mentor’s perspective has been notably neglected and the objective and subjective career benefits of mentors have not been articulated. This dissertation seeks to redress this lack of understanding by hypothesizing that mentoring fosters personal learning and objective and subjective career success by leveraging the mentor’s network centrality. I also suggest that emotional intelligence and proactive personality will enhance these career outcomes …
Multilingual Museums: A Proposal To Increase Linguistic Diversity In Contemporary Art Museums, Jennifer Cha
Multilingual Museums: A Proposal To Increase Linguistic Diversity In Contemporary Art Museums, Jennifer Cha
Master's Projects and Capstones
The U.S. population is becoming more ethnically, racially, and linguistically diverse. It is estimated that by the year 2050, the U.S. will shift to a majority-minority population, meaning that the total minority population will become the majority of the U.S. population. But while the U.S. is diversifying, the current museum visitorship demographic is not representative of or on track to measure up to these changes in the future. If museums are valuable civic spaces with several associated health, social, and educational benefits, and a large percentage of the population have low-English proficiency and cannot access the information, then there is …

Essays On The Patient-Centered Medical Home In The United States Military Health System, Glen N. Gilson
Theses & Dissertations
The Patient-Centered Medical Home has been endorsed by the primary care community as the model of the future, with hopes that it will increase quality of care and the patient and provider experience while decreasing costs. Many aspects of the implementation of the Patient-Centered Medical Home model remain unexplored. This dissertation comprises three independent studies examining Patient-Centered Medical Home implementation in the Military Health System, including (1) the effects of environmental correlates on the time to implement the model, (2) the impact of differences in implementation on preventive care quality outcomes, and (3) the effect of differences in implementation on …
Overcoming Barriers For The Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practice Through Journal Clubs, Regina Thomas
Overcoming Barriers For The Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practice Through Journal Clubs, Regina Thomas
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Many barriers exist at a 134-bed rural hospital in southern Illinois that hinder generation, evaluation, and implementation of evidence-based research into practice. This DNP project was completed through a phase approach utilizing a modified version of Kotter’s Model of Change, the RNcEBP Survey to self-rate individual confidence in the EBP process, and the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice to facilitate implementation of journal clubs. The RNcEBP survey revealed that nurses were familiar with the concept of EBP, have positive attitudes, and are confident that EBP changes can improve patient outcomes, but lack experience in evaluating literature to support implementing evidence-based …
Mdr Matters! Improving Primary Nurse Participation In Multidisciplinary Rounds, Alma Alcantara
Mdr Matters! Improving Primary Nurse Participation In Multidisciplinary Rounds, Alma Alcantara
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: The current model of multidisciplinary rounds (MDR) in a 40-bed medical-surgical unit within a Northern California community hospital has demonstrated low participation rates from primary nursing. The primary nurse attendance in MDRs is consistently at 50% participation, below the target goal of 80%. This lack of engagement leads to ineffective communication and fragmented care coordination resulting in suboptimal quality care and cost outcomes.
Context: An intervention strategy to standardize the MDR model was implemented over three months. A literature review revealed that effective and consistent MDR practices can directly influence primary nurse participation. This change management project focus …
Health Care Improvement Initiative: Outcomes And Impact Of An Academic-Practice Partnership Between A Large Integrated Health System’S Nurse Scholars Academy And The University Of San Francisco School Of Nursing And Health Professions, Ryan Fuller
Master's Projects and Capstones
By December 2018, a large integrated health system’s Nurse Scholars Academy (NSA) will have financially-sponsored 64 registered nurses to return to school through a strategic academic-practice partnership program at the University of San Francisco (USF). Referred to as ‘Nurse Scholars,' health system employees elected to return-to-school through NSA. As a five-year initiative, NSA was at risk for not receiving additional funding beyond 2020 without a thorough outcomes analysis that articulated the outcomes to executive leadership.
This health system employs more than 23,000 registered nurses in Northern California (NCAL). The NSA is a region-wide effort to accelerate academic progression, leadership development, …

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any differences in stress levels for African-Americans working in technical and non-technical based occupations. In order to adequately address the differences in stress levels for African-Americans, this study examined the data from an existing study called the Jackson Heart Study. Based on the weekly stress of individuals when performing their occupations, information and data were collected from 3 questionnaires that were correlated with stress and occupations of African-Americans in Mississippi. These questionnaires were the Household Enumeration Form, Personal Data and Socioeconomic Form, and the Stress Form. The research design …
The Coaching Maps As A Tool For Developing Reflectivity In Organisations, Marta Geisler, Robert Geisler
The Coaching Maps As A Tool For Developing Reflectivity In Organisations, Marta Geisler, Robert Geisler
European Management Studies
Our view of organizations, labour and the competencies of managers will soon need to change. In the postmodern and post-Fordist world, economy and organizations function differently than they did in the 20th century. Workers and managers will have to face new expectations. Not only has reflectivity become one of the key organisational factors; it is also taught, learnt and shaped. Drawing on an authoethnographic model and action-research, authors of this paper provide an education and development tool that managers and workers can use to develop and trigger reflectivity. Picture ethnography, coaching philosophy and hermeneutics are theoretical bases for the construction …
Triggers And Damages Of Organizational Defensive Routines, Yumei Yang, Davide Secchi, Fabian Homberg
Triggers And Damages Of Organizational Defensive Routines, Yumei Yang, Davide Secchi, Fabian Homberg
European Management Studies
According to research, organizational defensive routines (ODRs) have strong and intertwined individual and organizational components. However, the literature has yet to systematically isolate and analyse ODR-triggering factors at both levels. In this paper, we shall first refer to organizational routine theory to expound the characteristics of ODRs. Next, it identifies their individual and organization-level triggers. At the individual level factors generating ODRs are general self-efficacy, locus of control, and neuroticism, while those operating at the organizational level are organizational politics, red tape, and organizational structure. Finally, the chapter explores potential damage ODRs could cause to individuals and organizations related to …

Testing The Structural Invariance Of Affective Commitment On Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior Across Clan And Hierarchy Organizational Culture Types, Julia A. Fulmore
Testing The Structural Invariance Of Affective Commitment On Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior Across Clan And Hierarchy Organizational Culture Types, Julia A. Fulmore
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) is concerned with employees’ engagement in unethical conduct for the benefit of the organization that is immoral and/or illegal. Research findings on motivators of UPB show some contradictory findings that need to be resolved. Considering the empirical findings that clan culture discourages unethical behavior while hierarchy culture encourages unethical behavior along with the contradicting empirical findings between affective commitment and UPB based on samples with different cultures, this study sought to empirically assess the contradictory findings in the literature by testing the structural invariance of affective organizational commitment on UPB based on the two organizational of …
