Field-Based Scoring Of Soybean Iron Deficiency Chlorosis Using Rgb Imaging And Statistical Learning, Geng Bai, Shawn Jenkins, Wenan Yuan, George L. Graef, Yufeng Ge
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) is an abiotic stress in soybean that can cause significant biomass and yield reduction. IDC is characterized by stunted growth and yellowing and interveinal chlorosis of early trifoliate leaves. Scoring IDC severity in the field is conventionally done by visual assessment. The goal of this study was to investigate the usefulness of Red Green Blue (RGB) images of soybean plots captured under the field condition for IDC scoring. A total of 64 soybean lines with four replicates were planted in 6 fields over 2 years. Visual scoring (referred to as Field Score, or FS) was conducted …

Gene Expression And Lipid Accumulation In Green Microalga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii (137c) Under Salt Stress Condition, Thanapa Atikij
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Biodiesel is an important alternative energy that can reduce CO2 emission, the main cause of Global warming. Algal biomass has been considered to be the third generation biofuels. One of the important strategies that enhance lipid accumulation; precursor of biodiesel production, is stress cultivation. High salt concentration is one of a potential approach to enhance lipid accumulation in microalgae. Here, we investigated the impacts of salt on lipid accumulation in green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (137c). The results revealed that higher concentrations of NaCl, KCl, and LiCl led to increasing of saturated fatty acid contents for 1.8, 1.2, and 1.1 folds …

Development Of In Situ Gel Containing Asiaticoside-Cyclodextrin Complex For Periodontal Tissue Regeneration, Hay Man Saung Hnin Soe
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Asiaticoside (AS) is active herbal compound isolated from Centella asiatica. It has the potential benefit in promoting type I collagen (COL I) synthesis and osteogenic differentiation in human periodontal ligament cells. However, it has low aqueous solubility which may hamper the bioavailability. Thus, the main objective of this study was to develop the thermoresponsive in situ gels containing AS by using cyclodextrin (CD). To determine the solubility enhancement of AS, phase-solubility profiles were investigated and revealed that CDs enhanced the aqueous solubility of AS. Hydroxypropyl-beta-CD (HPβCD) and sulfobutyl-ether-beta-CD (SBEβCD) were selected due to highly solubilization enhancement of AS. The mucoadhesive …

DLSU Business & Economics Review
The Electronic Commerce (e-Commerce) Act of 2000 or Republic Act (RA) No. 8792 mandates all government agencies to transact business and perform government functions using electronic documents within two years from the date of its effectivity in June 2000. Unfortunately, only a handful of government agencies were ready to implement the said law in the year 2002 despite the availability of applicable information technology (IT) resources and appropriated budget. After 17 years, there is considerable improvement in the compliance with the said law, though there are still non-compliances of government offices that could not manage to be at par with …

The Geographic Mosaic Of Wolbachia Infection In Melanitis Leda Butterfly Populations, Brandon E. Latorre
The Geographic Mosaic Of Wolbachia Infection In Melanitis Leda Butterfly Populations, Brandon E. Latorre
Dissertations and Theses
Insects are the most species-rich multicellular taxon on the planet, and it is estimated that more than half of all insect species are infected with the endosymbiont Wolbachia. This bacterium can manipulate the reproduction of its host and potentially affect host evolution. Most surveys investigating patterns of Wolbachia infection in nature sample limited numbers of individuals; population-level investigations into geographic differences in infection status that might affect host evolution are few. To investigate geographic variability among populations of a single species, we assayed 133 Melanitis leda butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) for Wolbachia infection collected throughout its range in the …

Wood Trait Preferences Of Neotropical Xylophagous Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), Christina Torres
Dissertations and Theses
Tree life history strategies are correlated with functional plant traits, such as wood density (WD), moisture content (MC), bark thickness (BT), and nitrogen content (N); these traits affect the nutrients available to xylophagous insects. Cerambycid beetles feed on substrates that vary in these traits, but little is known about how they affect community composition. The goal of this project is to document the abundance of two cerambycid subfamilies (Cerambycinae and Lamiinae) and the WD, MC, BT, and N content in the wood they eat. In a salvage project conducted adjacent to the Panama Canal, trees were felled and exposed to …
Regulation By Database, Nathan Cortez
Regulation By Database, Nathan Cortez
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
The federal government currently publishes 195,245 searchable databases online, a number of which include information about private parties that is negative or unflattering in some way. Federal agencies increasingly publish adverse data not just to inform the public or promote transparency, but to pursue regulatory ends ⎯ to change the underlying behavior being reported. Such "regulation by database" has become a preferred method of regulation in recent years, despite scant attention from policymakers, courts, or scholars on its appropriate uses and safeguards.
This Article, then, evaluates the aspirations and burdens of regulation by database. Based on case studies of six …

Sedentary Time And The Cumulative Risk Of Preserved And Reduced Ejection Fraction Heart Failure: From The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis, Brandi Scot Rariden
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-reported sedentary time (ST) and the cumulative risk of preserved ejection fraction heart failure (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction heart failure (HFrEF) using a diverse cohort of U.S. adults 45-84 years of age.
Methods: Using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), we identified 6,814 subjects (52.9% female). All were free of baseline cardiovascular disease. Cox regression was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HR) associated with baseline ST and risk of overall heart failure (HF), HFpEF, and HFrEF. Weekly self-reported ST was dichotomized …

Framing Contemporary U.S. Wild Horse And Burro Management Processes In A Dynamic Ecological, Sociological, And Political Environment, J. Derek Scasta, Jacob D. Hennig, Jeffrey L. Beck
Human–Wildlife Interactions
The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act (WFRHBA) of 1971 established all “unbranded or unclaimed” equids on U.S. public lands as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West.” Today, >72,000 feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) and burros (E . asinus ; WHB) live on western U.S. public rangelands. The number of WHBs exceeds the Bureau of Land Management’s maximum Appropriate Management Level (AML) of 26,715 by a factor of approximately 2.7 and has nearly doubled from 2007–2015. The AML was set to balance WHB numbers with rangeland health and support other uses such as wildlife habitat …

Resource Selection Of Free-Ranging Horses Influenced By Fire In Northern Canada, Sonja E. R. Leverkus, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Marten Geertsema, Brady W. Allred, Mark Gregory, Alexandre R. Bevington, David M. Engle, J. Derek Scasta
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Free-ranging or feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) were important to the livelihood of First Nations and indigenous communities in Canada. The early inhabitants of the boreal region of British Columbia (BC) capitalized on naturally occurring wildfires and anthropogenic burning to provide forage for free-ranging horses and manage habitat for wildlife. This form of pyric herbivory, or grazing driven by fi re via the attraction to the palatable vegetation in recently burned areas, is an evolutionary disturbance process that occurs globally. However, its application to manage forage availability for free-ranging horses has not been studied in northern Canada. Across Canada, there …

Experimental Tests Of Nonsurgical Reproductive Inhibitors To Prevent Coyote Reproduction, Julie K. Young, Marjorie J. Macgregor, Eric M. Gese, Douglas C. Eckery
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Sterilization is an effective nonlethal tool to reduce livestock depredation by coyotes (Canis latrans) because adults without pups to provision are less likely to kill livestock. Surgical sterilization is costly and invasive, so identifying non-surgical methods for canids that allows wide-scale application is important. We conducted a preliminary assessment of two types of reproductive inhibitors (gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine and deslorelin, a GnRH agonist, on coyote reproductive capabilities. We treated captive coyotes with a GnRH vaccine (n = 6 males, n = 6 females) or deslorelin (n = 6 males), measured number of litters and pups born, …

Human–Wildlife Interactions
The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is considered the world’s most endangered marine mammal. It is the smallest member of the porpoise family endemic to the upper part of the Gulf of California. The current population is estimated at less than 30 individuals. The primary reasons for the species decline includes limited habitat and incidental mortalities associated with illegal gillnet fishing activities. Since 2008, the Mexican government has taken environmental and economic actions to protect the vaquita’s focusing in reducing by-catch deaths to zero. In 2015, a federal Agreement decreed by the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y …
Lead Concentrations In White-Tailed Deer Tissue Due To Retained Bullets, Meghan C. Zimmer, Tod L. Osier
Lead Concentrations In White-Tailed Deer Tissue Due To Retained Bullets, Meghan C. Zimmer, Tod L. Osier
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Mobilization of lead from retained bullets may lead to elevated lead levels in game tissue with consequences for consumers. We investigated lead mobilization in 2 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) carrying retained lead ammunition from previous gunshot wounds. Lead concentrations in muscle tissue of deer with retained lead bullets were in the same range as control deer. In contrast, 1 deer had higher bone lead levels than controls, suggesting mobilization occurred. Our results suggest that lead mobilization to meat from retained lead bullets does not appear to pose a consumption risk for those consuming meat that is physically distant from lead …

Librarians In The Lead: A Case For Interdisciplinary Faculty Collaboration On Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis
Communications in Information Literacy
Assignment design provides a potential niche for librarians to fill in improving research assignments and in providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration on teaching, but this can be difficult work to claim as librarians. In the 2016-2017 academic year, a team of three librarians at Utah State University, a mid-size research university, piloted an assignment design workshop for faculty. Based on a model developed by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), our workshop’s core component was a structured, librarian-facilitated small group discussion among three to four faculty members from a range of academic departments. Interdisciplinary conversation about teaching research …

Understanding Financial Conflict Of Interest: Implications For Information Literacy Instruction, Heather B. Perry
Communications in Information Literacy
Libraries have long existed to assist users in accessing accurate information for their needs. Industry has long been motivated to spread disinformation to promote their industry’s message to the public. Although corporate disinformation techniques perfected by the tobacco industry in the 1950’s were exposed, instead of disappearing they have only grown more influential with the rise of the internet. Many industries from petroleum to pharmaceuticals use scientific research to promote their corporate message and have contributed to harming the public. Users need information literacy (IL) to provide them with the skills they need to critically evaluate information and reject the …
