Environmental and Sustainability Studies Undergraduate Projects
The Healthy Eating and Sustainable Lifestyle group focuses on educating students and community members and directing individuals to making healthier dietary choices. We plan to achieve this goal through the Healthy Transition Day that will target this problem, intended to educate and involve students and community members around Grand Valley. This idea involves incorporationing the SAP into GVSU’s transition week. With Healthy Transition Day, students have the ability to tour the farm and learn how to get involved during their time at Grand Valley.
We have conceptualized two additional solutions that would take more time, resources, and planning in order …

Environmental and Sustainability Studies Undergraduate Projects
The Pollinator Awareness Program is an initiative evoked by the Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP) of Grand Valley State University to increase student involvement through the lens of pollinator education and habitat creation. The program includes educational components that teach students about what pollinators exist, what they do for us as well as delicate ecosystems, and how we can contribute to their survival. Through this program, students and community members gain the opportunity to plant and maintain the pollinator gardens at the SAP as well as participate in make-and-take events that encourage them to improve pollinator habitats near their own homes.
The Use Of Flipped Classroom Instructional Model In Teaching Mathematics In Higher Education: Instructors' Perspectives In Saudi Arabia, Saud Albishi
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary goal of this qualitative case study was to identify instructors perspectives toward the use of the flipped classroom instructional model in teaching mathematics in universities in Saudi Arabia. Many universities in Saudi Arabia use traditional methods of instruction. The flipped classroom instructional model is a more modern concept that promotes self-learning skills among students. The use of the flipped classroom instructional model has shown success in mathematics instruction elsewhere, but there is a paucity of research on the efficacy of the model in Saudi Arabia. To achieve the purpose of this study, a case research design was chosen. …

Coupling Of Mechanical And Electromagnetic Fields Stimulation For Bone Tissue Engineering, Alyaa I. Aldebs
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Alternative bone regeneration strategies that do not rely on harvested tissue or exogenous growth factors and cells are badly needed. However, creating living tissue constructs that are structurally, functionally and mechanically comparable to the natural bone has been a challenge so far. A major hurdle has been recreating the bone tissue microenvironment using the appropriate combination of cells, scaffold and stimulation to direct differentiation. This project presents a bone regeneration formulation that involves the use of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stems cells (hASCs) and a 3D scaffold based on a self-assembled peptide hydrogel doped with superparamagnetic nanoparticles (NPs). Osteogenic differentiation of …

Why Doesn’T A Mother Reject A Genetically Different Fetus?, Devora Krumholtz
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Many basic multicellular organisms possess some form of immune response to protect themselves against the invasion of foreign objects. It was not until British scientist, Peter Medawar proposed a fundamental question that changed the way researchers studied the maternofetal relationship. A fetus, being genetically different from its mother should be rejected by the maternal immune system, however, it is not. Researchers have since discovered and developed several mechanisms that aim to explain how the maternal immune system prevents fetal rejection. The formation of a mechanical barrier, general and local suppression of the maternal immune system, and a shift in cytokine …

The Effects Of Drug Abuse On Oral Health, Betzalel Krasnow
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Drug abuse, currently a national epidemic affecting millions of Americans, causes numerous health issues including increased dental disease. There are several factors which can contribute to an increase in caries and missing teeth. One of the most discussed mechanisms is xerostomia. Drug abusers tend to have large sugar intakes which exacerbates the problems caused by xerostomia. Drug abusers are also at risk for oral infections associated with dental decay due to their altered saliva composition. Unfortunately, once the symptoms are present there is little that can be done to correct them and the goal of the treating dentist should be …

This chapter provides an overview of household finance. The first part summarizes key facts regarding household financial behavior, emphasizing empirical regularities that are inconsistent with the standard classical economic model and discussing extensions of the classical model and explanations grounded in behavioral economics that can account for the observed patterns. This part covers five topics: consumption and savings, borrowing, payments, asset allocation, and insurance. The second part addresses interventions that firms, governments, and other parties deploy to shape household financial outcomes: education and information, peer effects and social influence, product design, advice and disclosure, choice architecture, and interventions that directly …
