The Fat Leading The Thin: Relative Body Size, Physical Activity Identification, And Behavioral Problems, Andrew C. Pickett, George B. Cunningham
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Though sport and physical activity participation are key elements of a healthy lifestyle, anti-fat biases serve as barriers to active living, leaving a large population segment underserved. This stigma also creates thin body standards for people working in sport and physical activity, including instructors. In this study, the authors conducted an experiment to explore how instructor and participant body size interact to influence activity identification and subsequent intentions to be physically active. Results indicate that larger-bodied participants were more identified when working with a larger instructor. For thinner participants, there were no significant differences in identification related to instructor body …
Budding Torts: Forecasting Emerging Tort Liability In The Cannabis Industry, John Campbell, Sahib Singh
Budding Torts: Forecasting Emerging Tort Liability In The Cannabis Industry, John Campbell, Sahib Singh
Loyola Consumer Law Review
The marijuana industry is booming. It is expanding into new states while it grows beyond the medical marijuana market into the recreational world. What was once illicit profit is quickly becoming on-the-books gains. As the industry matures, billions will be made, and companies once viewed suspiciously will become market giants. But this growth will not be without consequences. As marijuana use grows, and those who profit from it become established companies, the marijuana industry will become a target for tort claims that other industries have faced for decades. These claims, ranging from product liability claims to vehicular injury to consumer …

Food Insecurity And Behavioral Characteristics For Academic Success In Young Adults Attending An Appalachian University, Rebecca L. Hagedorn, Melissa D. Olfert
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
In order to investigate the impact of food insecurity on college students in a highly health disparate region we (1) assessed the prevalence of food insecurity among young adults at a large, rural university in Appalachia, and (2) investigated the relationship between food insecurity and behavioral characteristics including academic performance, coping strategies, and money expenditure. A cross-sectional design was used to capture a representative sample of young adults attending a large, central Appalachian university in Fall 2016. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Adult Food Security Survey was used to measure food insecurity. Independent variables include money expenditure (MES), …

The Blind Psychological Scientists And The Elephant: Reply To Sherlock And Zietsch, Robert Waldinger, M S. Schulz
The Blind Psychological Scientists And The Elephant: Reply To Sherlock And Zietsch, Robert Waldinger, M S. Schulz
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
The Commentary by Sherlock and Zietsch (2018) raises important questions about how the science of human psychological development moves forward as researchers make dramatic strides in understanding the role of genetics. In this response, we return to these larger questions, but we begin by addressing Sherlock and Zietsch’s specific argument that “genetic contributions should almost always be considered when dealing with associations between parents’ behavior and their children’s behavior” (p. 156). In our 60-year study of the association between warmth of the childhood family environment and late-life security of attachment (Waldinger & Schulz, 2016), we did not mention …

Effect Of Empagliflozin On Insulin Sensitivity In The Lean And Obese Zucker Rat: A Model Of Metabolic Syndrome, Veda Gayatri Sushma Penta
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Metabolic syndrome is one of the fastest growing health problems in the world. The medical costs associated with treating this disorder are staggering. Allowed to proceed untreated, metabolic syndrome can lead to a markedly decreased quality of life and a variety of medical conditions including heart and kidney failure. Whether the sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor Empagliflozin can be used to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome is not well understood. This proposal is specifically designed to address this gap in our knowledge. The expected outcomes of this work will identify the time course and degree of interrelatedness between changes …

The Supreme Court of Canada is hearing a case that deals with the nature of the internal market in Canada. This paper discusses trade law relating to regulatory cooperation in NAFTA, the European Union, the Canadian Free Trade Agreement and other recent Canadian international initiatives. It examines the ways in which these treaties and other arrangements respond to regulatory differences between importing and exporting jurisdictions. The challenge of how to deal with …
Women’S Rights In The Dprk: Discrepancies Between International And Domestic Legal Instruments In Promoting Women’S Rights And The Reality Reflected By North Korean Defectors, Jina Yang
Cornell International Law Journal
It is commendable that the DPRK has ratified the CEDAW and has established legislative measures to protect women from violence and guarantee equal protection. However short of internationally accepted human rights standard the DPRK may fall, such actions show that the DPRK is nonetheless trying to be a responsible member of the international community. However, many findings show that women’s rights are far from reaching the international standards, because of patriarchal traditions that are entrenched to the North Korean society and the national institutions related to women’s rights, which are used to mobilize women to work for the state, rather …

Functional Study Of Smyd2 Glutathionylation In Cardiomyocytes, Dhanushka Nalin Perera Munkanatta Godage
Wayne State University Dissertations
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important signaling molecules that contribute to the etiology of multiple muscle-related diseases, including cardiomyopathy and heart failure. There is emerging evidence that cellular stress can lead to destabilization of sarcomeres, the contractile unit of muscle. However, it is not completely understood how cellular stress or ROS induce structural destabilization of sarcomeres or myofibrils. Protein glutathionylation is one of the major protein cysteine oxidative modifications that play an important role in redox signaling and oxidative stress. In this report, we used a clickable glutathione approach in a cardiomyocyte cell line, and found that SET and MYND …

Advisor: Professor David Crich
Major: Chemistry
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
Infectious diseases causing by antibiotic resistant pathogen are one of the major threat to human health and society today. Many researchers tried to develop next generation of antibiotics by reinvesting the existing antibacterial drugs. Aminoglycosides have long been used as highly potent and broad-spectrum antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. But their side effect, especially the irreversible ototoxicity, and the fast-growing resistant problem limit their application. The goal of this research was …

The Founders created the architecture for the rights of children to self-determination and protection from the sins of their forebears. A central tenet of our democracy is that government, including these federal defendants, should not deprive children (the next generation) of the foundational elements of their lives, liberties or property and should not impose hardships on them for matters of which they have no control. This historical tradition and intent of the Founders of our nation has not always been realized, but has evolved over time as our society gains new insights and understandings of children and our notions of …

Forest productivity on glacially derived soils with weatherable phosphorus (P) is expected to be limited by nitrogen (N), according to theories of long-term ecosystem development. However, recent studies and model simulations based on resource optimization theory indicate that productivity can be co-limited by N and P. We conducted a full factorial N × P fertilization experiment in 13 northern hardwood forest stands of three age classes in central New Hampshire, USA, to test the hypothesis that forest productivity is co-limited by N and P. We also asked whether the response of productivity to N and P addition differs among species …

Labeling is a primary method of providing information about food such as the production, ingredients, and nutrition facts-but what happens when labels become less accessible? This Note explores the justice implications of the first genetically modified organism (GMO) labeling bill, The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, or known to opponents as The DARK Act (Denying Americans the Right to Know). This Act allows for a "QR" code, website, or 1-800 number to constitute a label for GMO labeling requirements. This Act discriminates against 100 million Americans who do not own smart phones or have access to Wi-Fi or data, …

Organic Versus Conventional Cropping Sustainability: A Comparative System Analysis, Tiffany L. Fess, Vagner Benedito
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
We are at a pivotal time in human history, as the agricultural sector undergoes consolidation coupled with increasing energy costs in the context of declining resource availability. Although organic systems are often thought of as more sustainable than conventional operations, the lack of concise and widely accepted means to measure sustainability makes coming to an agreement on this issue quite challenging. However, an accurate assessment of sustainability can be reached by dissecting the scientific underpinnings of opposing production practices and crop output between cropping systems. The purpose of this review is to provide an in-depth and comprehensive evaluation of modern …

Primary Objective: The American Motorcyclist Association requires professional riders to undergo baseline computerized neurocognitive testing (CNT) using the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) test for concussion management. It is recommended this practice be expanded to the amateur level, but limited research has explored whether baseline testing is necessary for youth when normative data is available. This study evaluates the utility of baseline testing for amateur riders by comparing their performance to those of traditional youth sports comprising normative datasets. Design/Methods: An cross-sectional study comparing amateur motocross (N = 100) riders matched by age and sex to football (N …

Relationship Between Diet And Learning Differences In Children, Amelia Hamilton, Ramona Stone
Relationship Between Diet And Learning Differences In Children, Amelia Hamilton, Ramona Stone
Public Health Sciences Student Work
There is growing recognition that learning disabilities are associated with a variety of factors, including diet. Prior research showed that children in need of special education services eat less home prepared meals and more non-home-prepared meals, which can lead to obesity, inadequate diet, and lethargy. Additional research along with parental health education to promote healthy nutritional decisions and skills for preparing meals is necessary.
