UNL Office of Research and Innovation, Social/Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium
This study examined racial and ethnic differences in the outcomes of a universal evidence-based program targeted to children and adolescents. Using data collected in 2015 and 2016 from the Alcohol: True Stories Hosted by Matt Damon program (N = 925), the study found the outcome of perceptions on risk of harm from alcohol use significantly different between the group of White respondents and the group of non-White respondents, and between the group of Hispanic respondents and the group of non-Hispanic respondents. Program effectiveness was found only among White and non-Hispanic respondents, widening the already existing gap between these populations.

PURPOSE: The associations of physical activity and television (TV) viewing with mortality risk among individuals with hematologic malignancies remain unclear.
METHODS: We examined the relations of physical activity and TV viewing time before and after diagnosis with mortality among 5182 U.S. adults aged 50-71 years from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study cohort who survived a first primary hematologic cancer between 1995-1996 and 2011.
RESULTS: For the pre- and post-diagnosis analyses, we confirmed 2606 and 613 deaths respectively. In multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard regression models, comparing high (≥4 hrs/wk) versus low (/wk) activity levels, pre-diagnosis physical activity was associated with …
A Multi-Domain Approach To Prevention And Reversal Of Cognitive Decline, Chanah Oberlander
A Multi-Domain Approach To Prevention And Reversal Of Cognitive Decline, Chanah Oberlander
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Incidence of dementia has been on the rise over the last few decades and it is projected that more than 130 million people will be affected by dementia worldwide by 2050. The underlying cause remains incompletely determined, and despite numerous clinical trials, no drug to date has proven effective in preventing or reversing symptoms of cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s disease. The amyloid hypothesis as a basis for drug development of Alzheimer’s disease has thus far proven to be ineffective, suggesting that perhaps a new approach is required. New studies have shown the efficacy of a multi-domain approach which targets …

Research has shown that disordered eating manifests itself during adolescence and is likely to transcend into adulthood1,7,8,9,14,15. The freshmen year in college is likely to be challenging for many students. During this time, they may develop disordered eating or perpetuate an existing condition3,4,14,15. This research study investigated the prevalence of disordered eating among college freshmen and factors that may impact this development. A comparison of prior history of disordered eating was also examined.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted on college freshmen at Northern …
Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King
Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Increasing the proportion of adults in the United States (U.S.) who engage in physical activity is a national priority. Only 29% met the aerobic guideline, 3% met the muscle strengthening guideline only, and 21% met the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. Individually oriented physical activity interventions can be intensive and have large effects; however, changes may be temporary unless supportive environments and health-promoting policies are in place. A variety of strategies are required to get and keep people physically active.

Quick Service Restaurant Consumer Behaviours: Moderating Effect Of Gender, Kevin Mason, Stephen Jones, James Walton
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
The moderating effect of gender on quick service restaurant (QSR) consumer post-dining behaviors may be significant for a QSR’s success. This study investigates gender behavioral differences in QSR consumer behaviors. Specifically, structured survey of QSR consumers were used to examine gender differences in QSR choice criteria, food selection, post dining satisfaction levels, and dining loyalty. The results indicate that gender is a moderating factor on consumers' restaurant choice criteria, the healthiness of food choices, dining satisfaction levels and future restaurant loyalty intentions. Implications of the findings and QSR success strategies are discussed.

Larval Nutrient Effects On Dissemination And Horizontal Transmission Potential Of Zika Virus In Mosquito Aedes Aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) (Linnaeus 1762), Andrew S. Paige
Theses & ETDs
The container mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the major vector of several emerging arboviruses affecting human health. Adult mosquito life history traits are largely determined by factors of the larval environment, including the composition of nutrients provided by detritus within the system. Within container systems, animal (dead insects) and plant detritus form the basal nutrients for food webs that support mosquito growth and development. Animal detritus is high in nitrogen, a limiting growth factor for organisms. Plant detritus is low in nitrogen, making it less nutritious. Here we investigate how heterogeneity in carbon and nitrogen affect Zika virus vector competency of …

A Clove A Day Keeps The Dentist Away? A Proposal To Investigate The Efficacy Of Natural Quorum Quenching Compounds On Streptococcus Mutans Biofilms, Alexis P. Pujol
Theses & ETDs
The formation of microbial biofilms on human teeth, also known as dental plaque, can lead to periodontal diseases and dental caries. The current treatments for these ailments are costly and inaccessible for many people, but if left untreated, these diseases can lead to serious illnesses. Bacteria within a biofilm communicate using quorum sensing (QS) and utilize this method to count themselves for controlled gene expression. In recent years, there has been significant research on how to inhibit this inter-bacterial communication in a process called, quorum quenching (QQ). Molecules that closely resemble the QS molecules produced and accepted by bacteria can …
Wittgenstein's Coffee: An Exploration Of Food/Art, Conceptual Art, And Context, Miranda Gale
Wittgenstein's Coffee: An Exploration Of Food/Art, Conceptual Art, And Context, Miranda Gale
Theses & ETDs
The philosophy of food is an expansive topic, but most people recognize it for its contributions to ethics rather than aesthetics. Examining the potential categorization of food as art leads to a fuller understanding of art on its own terms, especially within a twentieth/twenty-first century, post-Duchampian context. Conceptual art in particular builds on a framework that espouses the concept as a medium, rejects a purely visual aesthetic, and blurs lines of form and content. Emphasizing context, conceptual artists--some of whom work with food as a medium--reject most of the categories that exclude food from art. In sketching a philosophically-informed art …

Audible Sound Treatment Of Chlorella Vulgaris Beijerinck (1890) Has No Effect On Growth Rate, Nathan Burnaman
Theses & ETDs
Microalgae, a group of single celled or simple multicellular organisms responsible for a significant portion of the world’s primary productivity, have the potential to be utilized for sustainable and potentially remediative production of fuel, food, and medicine. Recent experiments have shown that treating microalgae with sound can enhance growth and lipid production. Chlorella vulgaris, a microalga of interest in multiple industries, was cultured with continuous single frequency sound stimulation at 2200 Hz to observe changes in growth rates. Sound-treated alga cultures showed no significant difference in growth compared to control cultures. The literature on microalgal applications, as well as sound …
“Weakness Is A Crime, Don’T Be A Criminal”: Moral Panic And The Construction Of Fitness In The American Middle Class, 1850 - Present, Cole G. Zelznak
“Weakness Is A Crime, Don’T Be A Criminal”: Moral Panic And The Construction Of Fitness In The American Middle Class, 1850 - Present, Cole G. Zelznak
Theses & ETDs
This thesis uses evidence from magazines, television, and academic journals to suggest a historical evolution in the social and cultural function of physical fitness in the white American middle class. The central argument of this study is that the antimodernist rhetoric of Progressive Era bicycling culture preempted the historical emergence of the “entrepreneur-of-the-self,” “neoliberal self,” or the “personality-based self” in the twentieth century. In tandem with this argument, I examine how the consumption-based cultivation of health and bodily appearance work as markers of economic, racial, and moral fitness. I begin by detailing how the media and federal government responded to …
Paws Off! The Ethics And Behavioral Effects Of Feline Onychectomy, Stacia Mintner
Paws Off! The Ethics And Behavioral Effects Of Feline Onychectomy, Stacia Mintner
Theses & ETDs
Onychectomy is currently a highly debated topic in veterinary medicine. The practice of declawing domesticated house cats has been a common one over time, however, current studies have shown that the amputation of part of the paw can cause debilitating physical and psychological pain from side effects of the procedure. These side effects have been shown to alter cats’ behavior, causing them to act “inappropriately” at home. There is a need within veterinary medicine for more data on the outcomes of, and attitudes toward declawing. By furthering research in onychectomy, cats can be better understood medically and psychologically, ultimately leading …
Bacterial Endosymbiont Wolbachia: Infection And Horizontal Transfer In Local Pollinators, Meagan Ash
Bacterial Endosymbiont Wolbachia: Infection And Horizontal Transfer In Local Pollinators, Meagan Ash
Theses & ETDs
The bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia is a potential threat to its endangered pollinator hosts. Wolbachia alters reproduction in its hosts in several ways that could threaten small or endangered populations. This threat could be perpetuated by horizontal transfer, yet the mechanisms and frequency of such transfers remains unknown. Understanding patterns of Wolbachia infection and relation at the community level can help in evaluating the potential for horizontal transfer. Local common pollinators were captured, tested for Wolbachia, and sequenced at the Multi-Locus Sequence Typing genes. These sequences were used to investigate the genetic relationships of the Wolbachia with external Wolbachia sequences and …

Stress, Sashay Away: Examining Stress Resilience In Dancers, Mackenzie Browning
Theses & ETDs
As humans continue to push ourselves in new ways to overcome the challenges and demands that the modern world throws at us, methods of managing our stress responses become increasingly important. In the current study, dance is explored as a viable option for stress management, as tested through resilience to stress. Three groups of people were evaluated based on their habitual sedentary, dance, and exercise habits. The stress responses of these three groups were measured through the Perceived Stress Scale, the State Trait Anxiety Inventory, and salivary cortisol (a hormone often associated with the stress response) samples before and after …
Increases In Soil Salinity Affect The Efficiency Of A Thigmonastic Response In Mimosa Pudica, Gabriel Joachim
Increases In Soil Salinity Affect The Efficiency Of A Thigmonastic Response In Mimosa Pudica, Gabriel Joachim
Theses & ETDs
Mimosa pudica (L.) utilizes a thigmonastic movement as a response to external stimuli. This response to mechanical perturbance if exposed repeatedly, results in a response reflective of habituation in animals. Recent research suggests this behavior in Mimosa pudica may be the primary defense against herbivory. The purpose of the current research is to determine if thigmonastic responses in plants like Mimosa pudica are influenced by changes in ecological variables like salinity, light, and temperature. Data were collected in the Summer of 2017 at the University of Louisville Kentucky. Plants were exposed to varying levels of soil salinity and exposed to …
An Observational Study Of Feather Damaging Disorder In Blue And Gold Macaws (Ara Ararauna), Codee Vogler
An Observational Study Of Feather Damaging Disorder In Blue And Gold Macaws (Ara Ararauna), Codee Vogler
Theses & ETDs
Feather damaging disorder is a grooming disorder where damage a bird inflicts damage on its own plumage by over preening, manipulating feathers with the beak, breaking feathers, or plucking them from the body. It is considered to be a condition of captivity and its etiology has been widely discussed, and in many cases, is unable to be identified due to the multifactorial nature of the disorder. It is a common concern among parrot owners, and is frequently seen in avian veterinary medicine. The present study investigated the differences in oral and locomotive observable behavior in blue and gold macaws, Ara …

Cacao Together: A Model For True Sustainability In The Chocolate Industry, Kerstin Roos
Capstone Collection
This Course Linked Capstone provides a critical analysis of the concept of sustainable development and then uses this analysis to create a social venture plan for a non-profit called Cacao Together. This capstone project will identify challenges in the sustainable use of cacao by first critiquing the mainstream sustainable development initiatives of certification schemes and corporate sustainability programs. It then offers an alternate framework through the 5 Capital Livelihood assessment tool which when applied, shows the gaps in cacao sustainability initiatives generally. I then propose a social venture that will addresses the needs of many parts of the chocolate supply …

Value Of Arrival Metaphylaxis In U.S. Cattle Industry, Elliott James Dennis, Ted C. Schroeder, David G. Renter, Dustin L. Pendell
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Although several studies have estimated economic impacts of antimicrobials for growth promotion, little is known about economic impacts of the common animal health management strategy known as metaphylaxis: administering antimicrobials to groups of animals to prevent disease. This article develops a new framework to map animal disease to producer profitability and determine societal economic impacts surrounding metaphylactic use of antimicrobials in beef cattle production. Results indicate the direct net return value of metaphylaxis to the U.S. fed cattle industry is at least $532 million. Beef producer surplus losses of $1.8 billion would be associated with eliminating metaphylaxis.
