Thlapsi arvense L. (pennycress) is being developed as a profitable oilseed cover crop for the winter fallow period throughout the temperate regions of the world, controlling soil erosion and nutrients run-off on otherwise barren farmland. We demonstrate that pennycress can serve as a user-friendly model system akin to Arabidopsis that is well-suited for both laboratory and field experimentation. We sequenced the diploid genome of the spring-type Spring 32-10 inbred line (1C DNA content of 539 Mb; 2n = 14), identifying variation that may explain phenotypic differences with winter-type pennycress, as well as predominantly a one-to-one correspondence with Arabidopsis genes, …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis (Xam) causes cassava bacterial blight, the most important bacterial disease of cassava. Xam, like other Xanthomonas species, requires type III effectors (T3Es) for maximal virulence. Xam strain CIO151 possesses 17 predicted T3Es belonging to the Xanthomonas outer protein (Xop) class. This work aimed to characterize nine Xop effectors present in Xam CIO151 for their role in virulence and modulation of plant immunity. Our findings demonstrate the importance of XopZ, XopX, XopAO1 and AvrBs2 for full virulence, as well as a redundant function in virulence between XopN and XopQ in susceptible cassava plants. We tested their role …

Xanthomonas Oryzae Pv. Oryzae Tale Proteins Recruit Ostfiiaγ1 To Compensate For The Absence Of Ostfiiaγ5 In Bacterial Blight In Rice, Wenxiu Ma, Lifang Zou, Zhiyuan Ji, Xiameng Xu, Zhengyin Xu, Yangyang Yang, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), the causal agent of bacterial blight (BB) of rice, uses transcription activator-like effectors (TALEs) to interact with the basal transcription factor gamma subunit OsTFIIAγ5 (Xa5) and activates the transcription of host genes. However, how OsTFIIAγ1, the other OsTFIIAγ protein, functions in the presence of TALEs remains unclear. In this study, we show that OsTFIIAγ1 plays a compensatory role in the absence of Xa5. The expression of OsTFIIAγ1, which is activated by TALE PthXo7, increases the expression of host genes targeted by avirulent and virulent TALEs. Defective OsTFIIAγ1 rice lines show reduced expression of the TALE-targeted …

Food Federalism: States, Local Governments, And The Fight For Food Sovereignty, Sarah Schindler Jan 2018

Food Federalism: States, Local Governments, And The Fight For Food Sovereignty, Sarah Schindler

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Recently, a number of states have sought to withdraw or restrain local power. In this Article, which is part of the “Re-Thinking State Relevance” symposium hosted by the Ohio State Law Journal, I write about a state taking the opposite approach, and attempting to affirmatively endow its local governments with additional powers. The state is Maine, and the context is control over local food production and sales. This Article begins by addressing the emergence of the sustainable local foods movement broadly, and reasons for the growth of this movement. It then focuses more pointedly on the food sovereignty movement, considering …

Bloom-Forming Macroalgae (Ulva Spp.) Inhibit The Growth Of Co-Occurring Macroalgae And Decrease Eastern Oyster Larval Survival, Lindsay A. Green-Gavrielidis, Fiona Mackechnie, Carol S. Thornber, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Macroalgal blooms have increased in frequency worldwide due to anthropogenic activities. Algal blooms can disrupt recreational activities, interfere with fisheries, and deplete oxygen during decomposition. Narragansett Bay has experienced macroalgal blooms dominated by blade-forming macroalgae of the genus Ulva for over a century. Evidence from other systems has suggested that Ulva can negatively impact other organisms. The first objective of this study was to determine whether bloom-forming U. compressa and U. rigida inhibit the growth of co-occurring macroalgae—Gracilaria vermiculophylla, Cystoclonium purpureum, and Chondrus crispus—during co-culture via laboratory based assays. We found that U. compressa and U. …

Pre-Licensure Nursing Student Attitudes Toward Physician-Assisted Suicide, Stephanie K. Cox

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Physician assisted suicide (PAS) has been a legalized presence in the United States since Oregon first passed the Death with Dignity Act in 1994. Now PAS is legalized in six states and it is realistic that nurses may encounter PAS during their career. This project explores pre-licensure nursing student attitudes toward PAS.

A mixed method design incorporating descriptive correlation and thematic analysis of an open-ended question was used. Surveys were sent to 550 nursing students enrolled in the UCF nursing program asking participants to complete the 34-question survey. This survey included a 12 item “Domino scale” on student nursing opinions …

From Contextual Frustrations To Classroom Transformations: Female Empowerment Through Science Education In Rural South Africa., Franci Schabort, Astrid Sinnes, William Kyle

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

The objective of this transformative action research project was to explore and develop sustainable methods to promote female empowerment through science education in rural, disadvantaged sectors of South Africa. In an attempt to achieve this we collaborated with local community members to develop and implement a contextualized science curriculum at a school in the aforementioned setting. As soon as the project was launched it became increasingly clear that although the ideology of ‘empowerment through science education’ seemed a promising venture, it could also be an extremely complex and often frustrating undertaking. This was especially true when working within an unfamiliar …

Rural School Nursing In Colorado: New Perspectives, Alice M. Burch Jan 2018

Rural School Nursing In Colorado: New Perspectives, Alice M. Burch

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Rural school nurses face the challenge of practicing nursing care in an environment that is not built around health care. They are often the only person with health care knowledge in the school, and therefore feel alone. There has been little research into the perceptions of school nurses related to their experiences. To begin to fill this gap, a descriptive phenomenology dived deeply into the lived experiences of nine rural school nurses. The nurse researcher conducted face – to – face interviews with these nurses. One main question related to their experiences and five sub-questions yielded a wide variety of …

Hiv Related Stigma, Perceived Social Support And Risk Of Premature Atherosclerosis In South Asians, Travis Bergmann, Shantanu Sengupta, Milind P. Bhrushundi, Hemant Kulkarni, Partho P. Sengupta, Icilma Fergus

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Objective: This study sought to determine the association between social support and stigma experienced by HIV-positive patients and presence of subclinical cardiovascular disease. Methods: We implemented a cross sectional study in 67 HIV-positive patients and 52 controls from a community health care center in central India. The participants underwent an in-depth survey and a clinical and laboratory assessment of cardiovascular risk. Carotid-intimal thickness (CIMT) was used as a marker of subclinical cardiovascular disease.

Results: On comparing the HIV and age and sex-matched control population, HIV patients had lower body weight (P=<0.001), and lower systolic blood pressures (P = 0.002). Despite the lack of higher cardiac risk factor prevalence and lower lipid abnormalities, HIV patients had higher right, left and average CIMT values than controls (P < 0.001 for all). HIV patients also showed higher prevalence of abnormal CIMT (! 0.9 mm) than controls (32% vs. 0%, P < 0.001). HIV patients with increased CIMT (n = 37) in comparison with those with normal CIMT (n = 30) were more frequently males (P = 0.023), had higher systolic blood pressures (P = 0.002), lower CD4 counts (P = 0.033) and experienced higher enacted stigma (P = 0.044). On multivariable stepwise logistic regression, systolic blood pressure (odds ratio:1.06, P = 0.002) and stigma score > 25th percentile value (odds ratio:3.84, P = 0.037) were …

It is not uncommon to read that long-held beliefs about medical treatments have been dislodged by new studies. For example, there is now doubt as to whether women should undergo annual mammograms, previously a cornerstone of cancer screening. Hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, once considered highly suspect in light of worrisome research findings, is now being reconsidered as a beneficial therapy. These reversals trouble and confuse many Americans.

This Article explores why medical research findings can be erroneous and what can go wrong in the process of designing and conducting research studies. It provides readers with essential analytical tools …

Nicotinamide Treatment Robustly Protects From Inherited Mouse Glaucoma., Pete A. Williams, Jeffrey M. Harder, Brynn H Cardozo, Nicole E Foxworth, Simon W M John

Faculty Research 2018

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a key molecule in several cellular processes and is essential for healthy mitochondrial metabolism. We recently reported that mitochondrial dysfunction is among the very first changes to occur within retinal ganglion cells during initiation of glaucoma in DBA/2J mice. Furthermore, we demonstrated that an age-dependent decline of NAD contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction and vulnerability to glaucoma. The decrease in NAD renders retinal ganglion cells vulnerable to a metabolic crisis following periods of high intraocular pressure. Treating mice with the NAD precursor nicotinamide (the amide form of vitamin B3) inhibited many age- and high …
