The Association Between The Coach-Athlete Relationship And Burnout Among High School Coaches, Scott Westfall, Eric M. Martin, Daniel Gould
The Association Between The Coach-Athlete Relationship And Burnout Among High School Coaches, Scott Westfall, Eric M. Martin, Daniel Gould
Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Burnout is a term that continues to raise considerable concern among high school coaches and administrators (Raedeke, 1997) and has shown to have negative effects on coaches and athletes alike (Price & Weiss, 2000; Vealey, Armstrong, & Comar, 1998). While burnout has shown to have significant adverse effects, few studies have examined how the coach-athlete relationship may affect a coach s level of perceived burnout. This study sought to understand if the coach-athlete relationship predicted coach burnout. High school coaches (69 males, 62 females) completed the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q; Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004), the Coaching Burnout Questionnaire, a modified …
The Achievement Gap: Federal, State, Provincial And Nonprofit Websites That Publish Research Reports About The Achievement Gap In Pnla States And Provinces, Kellian Clink
Library Services Publications
The achievement gap “refers to a difference between the academic achievement of linguistic and ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds, and female students, and either the mainstream student population in general or the white student population more specifically” (Odekon, 2015, p. 7). There are as many causative factors as there are rocks on a beach in Alaska. While books and articles may refer to these and act as a finding aid, I find it valuable to have a certain familiarity with federal, state, and nonprofit organizations that publish timely and authoritative research reports. These …

The Rise Of Noncommunicable Diseases In Kenya: An Examination Of The Time Trends And Contribution Of The Changes In Diet And Physical Inactivity, Edward Michieka Onyango, Benjamin Morang’A Onyango
College of Agriculture
This study examined correlations of historical changes in diet and physical inactivity with the rise of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in Kenya. Historical data on diet, wage jobs by industry, urbanization, gross domestic product (GDP), and morbidity due to NCDs were extracted from Kenya Statistical Abstracts, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAOSTAT), and the World Bank online database. These data were plotted and correlations between these factors and the incidence of different NCDs over time were evaluated. There was a rapid rise in the incidence of circulatory disease starting in 2001, and of hypertension and diabetes starting in 2008. The rise of …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among adults in the United States and more than 600,000 people per year die when the condition goes untreated. Many cardiovascular maladies, such as high blood pressure and heart disease, can be markedly improved with lifestyle changes, including eating a healthy diet and regular exercise. In this study, 15 sedentary adult women (aged 19-63 years) participated in a prescribed 12-week yoga program. Electrocardiography was used to measure Heart Rate Variability, a tool that assesses autonomic tone on the heart. Autonomic nervous system activity is assessed at VLF, LF, and HF spectral components. …

Economics Of Integrating Push-Pull Technology In Maize-Dairy Farming Systems In Eastern Uganda, Ruth Chepchirchir
Economics Of Integrating Push-Pull Technology In Maize-Dairy Farming Systems In Eastern Uganda, Ruth Chepchirchir
All PhD Dissertations
Cereals particularly maize, are the most essential food and cash crops for majority of smallholder households in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In maize production, small-sized producers are confronted with different constraints including stemborers, Striga and degraded soil leading to poor crop yields. In response to these challenges, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) and collaborators came up with a habitat management approach; the Push-pull Technology (PPT) for simultaneous restrain of the three key constraints. Despite high adoption of PPT in East Africa, its impact has not been fully understood in the region. This study characterizes farming systems and …
Host Acceptability, Suitability, Interaction And Establishment Of Two Introduced Liriomyza Leafminer Endoparasitoids: Halticoptera Arduine (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) And Chrysocharis Flacilla (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) In Kenya, Muchemi Samuel Kagumba
All PhD Dissertations
Liriomyza (Diptera: Agromyzidae) leafminers are pests of economic importance to the production of horticultural crops in East Africa. In the scope of a classical biological control program in East Africa, two parasitoids Halticoptera arduine (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and Chrysocharis flacilla Walker (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were introduced from Peru. This dissertation aims to assess the performance and impact of the parasitoids in biological control of Liriomyza leafminer species. Specifically, the research work aims to assess acceptability and suitability of the two parasitoids in three Liriomyza species, the potential interactions with a dominant local parasitoid, Diglyphus isaea (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), their establishment and …

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), undertook a biological control (BC) programme for control of stemborers from 1993 to 2008, to reduce cereal yield losses due to stemborer attack in East and Southern Africa. The programme released four biological control agents—Cotesia flavipes, Cotesia sesamiae, Telenomus isis and Xanthopimpla stemmator—to control the economically important stemborer pests Busseola fusca, Chilo partellus and Sesamia calamistis. The purpose of this research was to assess the ex-post economic impact of the BC program among smallholder farmers in Kenya. Specifically, the study sought to: i) determine the productivity-effects of BC at farm level, ii) …

Characterization And Functional Analysis Of Tricorn Interacting Factor 3 In Trypanosoma Brucei Brucei As Potential Drug Targets Against African Trypanosomiasis, Florence Atieno Ng'ong'a
All PhD Dissertations
Trypanosomes are protozoans causing African trypanosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease in Africa affecting humans and animals. Despite advancement in African Trypanosomiasis research, the disease continues to threaten millions of people and animals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Control methods have focused on the use of drugs which have adverse effects and vector control methods which have proved to be ecologically unsustainable while vaccines are still not available due to antigenic variation. Studies have shown that the pathogenesis of Trypananosoma brucei brucei infections is parasite driven and various classes of Trypananosoma brucei brucei peptidases have been studied and implicated as virulence factors. Proteasomal …

Comparison Of Osteoporosis Knowledge, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Behavior Among College Students Of Various Racial/Ethnic Groups, Lauri Deruiter-Willems
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Osteoporosis is known as a pediatric disease with geriatric consequences. The need for bone health, awareness of controllable risk factors and prevention of osteoporosis begins during ones youth (Campbell, 2012; Cannada, 2016; Evenson & Sanders, 2016; Edmonds, Turner, & Usdan, 2012; Ford et al., 2011; Gammage et al., 2009; Gammage et al., 2012). Currently, most health information and health campaigns focus on older adults. To promote measurable improvements in reducing the number of cases of osteoporosis, the focus for change needs to start as early as teenage and young adult age. In addition to the general population trends, rates specifically …

Altering Plant Defenses: Herbivore-Associated Molecular Patterns And Effector Arsenal Of Chewing Herbivores, Saumik Basu, Suresh Varsani, Joe Louis
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Chewing herbivores, such as caterpillars and beetles, while feeding on the host plant, cause extensive tissue damage and release a wide array of cues to alter plant defenses. Consequently, the cues can have both beneficial and detrimental impacts on the chewing herbivores. Herbivore-associated molecular patterns (HAMPs) are molecules produced by herbivorous insects that aid them to elicit plant defenses leading to impairment of insect growth, while effectors suppress plant defenses and contribute to increased susceptibility to subsequent feeding by chewing herbivores. Besides secretions that originate from glands (e.g., saliva) and fore- and midgut regions (e.g., oral secretions) of chewing herbivores, …

Trends And Economic Drivers For United States Naloxone Pricing, January T 2006 To February 2017, Matthew Rosenberg, Grace Chai, Shekhar Mehta, Andreas Schick
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Anecdotal evidence indicates that naloxone prices have risen in recent years, but limited research has examined the magnitude of these increases and potential causes. We contribute nationally representative evidence to help answer each of these questions, including wholesale pricing data from a proprietary drug sales database span- ning January 2006 to February 2017. We find that all formulations of naloxone increased in price since 2006 except for Narcan Nasal Spray. These cumulative increases totaled 2281% for the 0.4 MG single-dose products, 244% for the 2 MG single-dose products, 3797% for the 4 MG multi-dose products, and 469% for the 0.4 …

From a financial perspective there may be no better investment, or more sensible target for advertising than one directed at the interests of children. This focus is perfectly understandable for a firm aiming to maintain a continually expanding and predictable source of profit. What children lack in spending power compared to other age groups, they make up for in potential longevity to consume, as well as their sheer amount of exposure to such advertising outlets, not only in hours spent, but in the various forms of technology to which they are regularly exposed. Children have an uncanny ability to mold …

Nutrient Conservation Trait Responses Of Low Resource Adapted Chaparral Shrubs To Increased Resource Availability, Reina Lee Nielsen
Nutrient Conservation Trait Responses Of Low Resource Adapted Chaparral Shrubs To Increased Resource Availability, Reina Lee Nielsen
Masters Theses
Traits that increase mean nutrient retention times are essential to plant performance in low resource environments, where multiple stressors (low water and nutrients) are present. Although physiological responses to either water or nutrient stress are well understood, fewer studies have investigated the interaction of these stressors from a phylogenetically-controlled, whole-plant perspective. This research focused on three, phylogenetically-controlled pairs of shrubby evergreen species from the California chaparral that either grow on or off serpentine soils, which differ in nutrient availability. Using greenhouse and field studies, the responses of these plants to altered water and nutrient availability were evaluated. The greenhouse study …
