Reported herein is the design, implementation, and evaluation of a full-day outreach program for high school girls that focuses entirely on sugar-related activities. The program, which we ran in February 2016 and February 2017, included multiple hands-on sugar-based experiments to increase the participants’ interest in and enthusiasm for science. The success of the program was quantitatively evaluated through the administration of precamp and postcamp surveys. Overall, the survey results indicated a statistically significant improvement in responses in one of the two program years, which corresponds to success in changing the participants’ attitudes regarding the practical applicability of science and in …

BACKGROUND: Youth living with disabilities are at risk of experiencing poor health outcomes. Coordinated school health programs have an opportunity to help youth with disabilities and their families through health education, health services, and community engagement. The World Health Organization developed the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as a framework to analyze factors related to health conditions. We used the ICF to examine parental perceptions of health and function among students with disabilities living in rural and urban areas.
METHODS: We surveyed parents (N = 71) using the parent-report versions of the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument …

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Family processes in early life have been impli- cated in adolescent involvement in teen dating violence, yet the developmental pathways through which this occurs are not well understood. In this study, etiological pathways from parental psychopathology and marital conflict in infancy to involvement in dating violence in late adoles- cence were examined in a sample of children at high-risk due to parental alcohol problems. Families (N = 227) recruited when the child was 12 months of age were assessed at 12-, 24-, 36-months, kindergarten, 6th, 8th, and 12th grades. Slightly more than half of the children were female (51%) and …

Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) and its associated receptor, the PAF Receptor (PAFR), are important mediators of intercellular communication during an immune response. Once a physiological stimulus triggers an inflammatory response, epithelial, endothelial and immune cells synthesize and release PAF. PAF mediates the recruitment of immune cells, platelets, angiogenesis, expression of various genes, and increased PAF biosynthesis (Brown, 2006; Han, 2006; Whatley, 1988; Axelrod, 1988). In this study, we utilized HaCaT cells and a well characterized KB cell line derived from nasopharyngeal cells, which do not natively express the PAFR. KB cells had previously been transfected with a PAF receptor (KBP) …

Improving Care For Adult Clinic Patients With A History Of Poor Glycemic Control, Bonnie M. Clark
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Patients of one internal medicine clinic were found to have nearly twice the rate of diagnosed diabetes and poor glycemic control, when compared with national rates. Given this, certain aspects of the patient-provider dyad system, such as inadequate provider time, knowledge, and resources; may have contributed to the ability of some patients to adapt to a lifestyle with consistent diabetes self-care.
Intervention: An evidence-based diabetes protocol was developed, a diabetes self-management training (DSMT) curriculum was adapted to local context, and three cycles of patient-centered DSMT classes were delivered to provide individual and group-based support to participants. Completion of …

Registered Nurses’ Attitudes Towards Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Patients’ Healing, Chidozie Ibe
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
With the ever-growing popularity of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States, patients may be using some of these therapies at home or may benefit from their use to help them heal from their symptoms and diseases. Registered nurses are in a great position to be able to assess patients for their use of CAM and provide necessary education. A review of literature found that nurses generally lacked adequate knowledge about CAM therapies. The purpose of this thesis study was to assess registered nurses’ attitudes towards CAM in regards to its role in patients’ healing, as attitudes often …

Limited information exists on funding models for interprofessional education (IPE) course delivery, even though potential savings from IPE could be gained in healthcare delivery efficiencies and patient safety. Unanticipated economic barriers to implementing an IPE curriculum across programs and schools in University settings can stymie or even end movement toward collaboration and sustainable culture change. Clarity among stakeholders, including institutional leadership, faculty, and students, is necessary to avoid confusion about IPE tuition costs and funds flow, given that IPE involves multiple schools and programs sharing space, time, faculty, and tuition dollars. In this paper, we consider three funding models for …

Over the past three decades numerous studies have illustrated the inverse relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and mortality. However, this relationship has almost exclusively been studied using estimated CRF (CRFe), with known error of ± 3 to 7 ml/kg/min, with no studies assessing this association using directly measured CRF in both men and women that were apparently healthy at baseline testing.
The Role Of Antibiotic Therapy In The Treatment Of Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth In Pediatric Patients With Short Bowel Syndrome, Christina Heinzman
The Role Of Antibiotic Therapy In The Treatment Of Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth In Pediatric Patients With Short Bowel Syndrome, Christina Heinzman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects
Short bowel syndrome is the congenital or surgical alteration of the small bowel resulting in a shorter than normal length of small bowel. This condition affects approximately 20,000 people in the Unites States and is diagnosed in 3-5 times per 100,000 live births annually. Patients with short bowel syndrome are at risk for the development of small bowel bacterial overgrowth, a serious consequence caused by overgrowth of bacteria in the small bowel resulting in symptoms of abdominal pain, abdominal distention, feeding intolerance, malabsorption, weight loss and increased risk of metabolic acidosis. Clinical studies assessing the role of antibiotic therapy in …

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) rely on a symbiosis with fungi for their nutrition. Symbiotic fungi are preserved and transported in specialized storage structures called mycangia. Although pivotal in the symbiosis, mycangia have been notoriously difficult to study, given their minute size and membranous structure. We compared the application of novel visualization methods for the study of mycangia, namely micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and laser ablation tomography (LATscan) with traditional paraffin sectioning. Micro-CT scanning has shown the greatest promise in new organ discovery, while sectioning remains the only method with sufficient resolution for cellular visualization. All three common types …

Screen For Interacting Factors For Trypanosoma Brucei Telomere Protein Rap1, Annelise Radzin, Elizabeth Beran
Undergraduate Research Posters 2018
Trypanosoma brucei is a protozoan parasite that causes human African Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in people and nagana in cattle, both of which are fatal without treatment. This parasite is injected into the host through the bite of the tsetse fly and is able to evade the host’s immune response due to changes in its major surface antigen, variant surface glycoproteins (VSGs). This constant switching prevents the host from making a single antibody that can recognize the antigen and eliminate the parasite. VSG expression sites have been found to be near the telomeres of Trypanosoma brucei, and studies from our lab …

Sex Disparities In St-Elevation Myocardial Infarction Care And Outcomes: A Global Systematic Metaanalysis, Ido Haimi
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Outcomes of patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) have improved through widespread implementation of systems-of-care, yet sex disparities continue to be reported. A comprehensive, global study of sex disparities in contemporary STEMI care and outcomes has not been undertaken.
Objective: To examine whether sex differences in STEMI management and mortality outcomes persist worldwide and by geographic region.
Methods: A systematic PubMed literature search was performed using search terms “sex” or “gender” and “STEMI” for studies in English from 2000 to present reporting sex-based STEMI mortality. Articles with primary data on …

Plant growth-promoting bacteria that are also capable of suppressing plant pathogenic fungi play an important role in sustainable agriculture. There is a critical need for conducting research to discover, characterize and evaluate the efficacy of new strains of such bacteria in controlling highly aggressive plant pathogens. In this study, we isolated endophytic bacteria from medicinal plants of Bangladesh and evaluated their antagonistic capacity against an important phytopathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Growth-promoting effects of those isolates on cucumber and rice seedlings were also assessed. Among 16 morphologically distinct isolates, BDR-2, BRtL-2 and BCL-1 significantly inhibited the growth of S. sclerotiorum …

Introduction: Spontaneous interferon‐γ (IFNγ) released detected by enzyme‐linked immunospot (ELISpot) assays may be a biological phenomenon. Markers of immune activation levels were assessed as correlates of high background among individuals in Kenya. Methods: Couples concordantly seronegative for HIV‐1 were enrolled. IFN‐γ ELISpot assays were conducted and negative control wells were categorized as having either high or low background (≥50 and <50 SFU/106 peripheral blood mononuclear cells [PBMC], respectively). PBMC were stained for CD4, CD8, and immune activation markers (CD38 and HLA‐DR) and analyzed using flow cytometry. Proportions of activated T‐cells were compared between those with low and high background …50>

Understanding the aroma profile of wines made from cold climate grapes is needed to help winemakers produce quality aromatic wines. The current study aimed to add to the very limited knowledge of aroma-imparting compounds in wines made from the lesser-known Frontenac and Marquette cultivars. Headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with simultaneous olfactometry was used to identify and quantify selected, aroma-imparting volatile organic compounds (VOC) in wines made from grapes harvested at two sugar levels (22° Brix and 24° Brix). Aroma-imparting compounds were determined by aroma dilution analysis (ADA). Odor activity values (OAV) were also used to …

For the better part of a decade, Americans have had a front-row seat to a fervent and turbulent debate over the future of their health care system. The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), the most comprehensive health reform effort since the mid-1960s, ushered in a new era in health law and policy, granting millions of Americans access to health care. After multiple legal challenges and congressional efforts that ultimately failed to slay the law, the ACA had become entrenched by the end of the Obama administration, even though pieces of the law had …
