Investigating The Effects Of Legume Mulching On Carbon And Nitrogen Fluxes Of Small Scale Agriculture, Emily Neel
Investigating The Effects Of Legume Mulching On Carbon And Nitrogen Fluxes Of Small Scale Agriculture, Emily Neel
Honors Thesis Collection
Fertilizers provide nitrogen to agricultural crops, which is often the nutrient limiting plant growth. However, synthetic fertilizers are often not preferred or possible sources of soil nutrients due to economic and ecological reasons. Agroecological practices have historically incorporated legumes and mulching into agroecosystems to improve productivity. This research investigated the effects of legume mulching on small scale vegetable crop productivity. The experiment was conducted in the Wellesley College Edible Ecosystem Garden in 24 replicate barrel collars. In each barrel, I planted two spinach (Spinacia oleracea, variety ‘Tyee’) and two lettuce (Lactuca sativa, variety ‘Romaine’) plants. In half of the barrels, …

Keats, The "Tongueless Nightingale," And The Legacy Of Philomela In English Poetry, Windsor Rose Whitlock
Honors Thesis Collection
In his groundbreaking essay, “The Hoodwinking of Madeline,” Jack Stillinger first posited a darker reading of Keats’ The Eve of St. Agnes, arguing that Keats’ mention in the poem of a “tongueless nightingale” is a calculated allusion to the story of Philomela from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Since Stillinger published his essay in 1961, not much else has been written on the subject, with the exception of Beverly Fields’ 1983 article, “Keats and the Tongueless Nightingale: Some Unheard Melodies in ‘The Eve of St. Agnes.’ ” In this essay, Fields suggests that Keats killed off the “tongueless nightingale” at the conclusion …

Many times, the incredibly difficult role of becoming a caregiver falls onto close family and friends. There is little training for the responsibilities that come along with becoming a caregiver and there is not always support for them outside family or friends. After much research and interviews with others who had been handed the role as caregiver, it is believed that while there are certain types of communication between caregivers and support groups, there should be better communication of where caregivers can turn to in order to find support. The interviews conducted for the sake of this research showed that …

Dewey’S Thought On Education And Social Change, Ignacio Perez-Ibanez
Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications
Dewey published his article “Education and Social Change” in 1937. His preoccupation with this issue is a constant theme in his works, which are infused with ideas about the role that education and, most specifically, our school system have in the transformation of society. His thought has had a tremendous influence on the work of later educational philosophers. He believed in a more democratic, just, free, and peaceful world, where civil liberties and human rights are respected. Education’s main goal should be to create individuals who grasp the complexity and broader implications of social issues and who also feel empowered …

©Journal of Thoracic Disease. Indwelling pleural catheters (IPCs) are increasingly being used for patients with recurrent malignant pleural effusions. They are simple to place and can be done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. IPCs uniformly relieve dyspnea and improve quality of life of patients with malignant pleural effusions. In some patients with recurrent non-malignant pleural effusions, IPCs proved to be effective as well. With increasing use of IPCs, physicians and patients are faced with complications related to the presence of an indwelling catheter for extended periods of time. The purpose of this review is to describe the various …

Chylothorax, which is defined as the presence of chyle in the pleural space, is often caused by malignancy. However, chylothorax as a result of underlying CLL is exceedingly rare in the literature. Chyle contains fat soluble vitamins and lymphocytes, meaning that its collection into the pleural space may further exacerbate the immunosupressed state of an individual with CLL. Here, we report three cases of patients with CLL who developed chylothorax, and their management. Chylothorax, although rare with CLL, should be considered in the differential diagnosis when patients with CLL present with pleural effusions, especially if recurrent. Discovery of a chylothorax …

© 2018 The Author(s). Published by S. Karger AG, Basel. Ixekizumab is a selective monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin-17A, approved for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis. It has rarely been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in randomized trials only. We report a unique case of severe new-onset ulcerative colitis in a young male complicated by cytomegalovirus infection who was on ixekizumab therapy for plaque psoriasis. We recommend that clinicians should exercise caution before prescribing ixekizumab as it seems to induce and exacerbate IBD.

Sisters In Sustainability: Gender-Driven Agricultural Initiatives Promoting Socioeconomic, Environmental, And Cultural Sustainability, Becky Jacobs
College of Law Faculty Scholarship
An increasing number of women are choosing to pursue careers in agriculture. A higher percentage of women are represented among sustainable farmers than are counted among conventional farmers. For example, in the United States, this percentage is 21percent as compared to 9percent. The way in which women farmers approach sustainable agriculture is consistent with the feminist ethic of care that encompasses responsibility, nurturing, relationality, and interdependence. These characteristics are expressed in a number of ways on women-owned or operated sustainable farms. Their farms, for example, have fewer acres than those of male farmers; they plant, cultivate, and harvest by hand …
