Molecular Phylogenetics Of Floridian Boletes, Arian Farid Mar 2018

Molecular Phylogenetics Of Floridian Boletes, Arian Farid

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The boletes are macrofungi which have undergone extensive taxonomic revisions since the advent of molecular tools. To further our understanding of the boletes in peninsular Florida, we sequenced two common Floridian boletes, and analyzed them with molecular phylogenetic tools. Boletus rubricitrinus, a common Florida bolete often found in lawns under Quercus, and likely has a distribution that extends to Texas. Based on ITS and LSU sequences and morphological studies, this species belongs in the genus Pulchroboletus. As the holotype is in poor condition, an epitype is established here. A thorough description of macroscopic and microscopic features is also provided for …

School of Health Professions

Background: The most common physical deficit caused by a stroke is muscle weakness which limits a person's mobility. Mobility encompasses activities necessary for daily functioning: getting in and out bed, on/off toilet, sitting, standing and walking. These activities are significantly affected in people with severe stroke who typically spend most of their time in bed or a chair and are immobile. Immobility is primarily caused by neurological damage but exacerbated by secondary changes in musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems. These secondary changes can theoretically be prevented or minimised by early mobilisation, in this case standing up early post-stroke.Standing up early post-stroke …

Association Of Proteomics Changes With Al-Sensitive Root Zones In Switchgrass, Mahesh Rangu, Zhujia Ye, Sarabjit Bhatti, Suping Zhou, Yong Yang, Tara Fish, Theodore W. Thannhauser Mar 2018

Association Of Proteomics Changes With Al-Sensitive Root Zones In Switchgrass, Mahesh Rangu, Zhujia Ye, Sarabjit Bhatti, Suping Zhou, Yong Yang, Tara Fish, Theodore W. Thannhauser

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

In this paper, we report on aluminum (Al)-induced root proteomic changes in switchgrass. After growth in a hydroponic culture system supplemented with 400 μM of Al, plants began to show signs of physiological stress such as a reduction in photosynthetic rate. At this time, the basal 2-cm long root tips were harvested and divided into two segments, each of 1-cm in length, for protein extraction. Al-induced changes in proteomes were identified using tandem mass tags mass spectrometry (TMT-MS)-based quantitative proteomics analysis. A total of 216 proteins (approximately 3.6% of total proteins) showed significant differences between non-Al treated control and treated …

The Healthfulness Of Entrées And Students' Purchases In A University Campus Dining Environment, Krista Leischner, Lacey Arneson Mccormack, Brian C. Britt, Greg Heiberger, Kendra Kattelmann

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to determine the availability of "more healthful" (MH) versus "less healthful" (LH) entrée items in the campus dining and if students' purchases are reflective of what is offered. This is an observational study in which purchases of the available entrée items in the campus dining at South Dakota State University in one academic year were collected and categorized as either MH or LH according to the American Heart Association guidelines. Chi-square tests were used to determine the differences between the proportion of purchased MH and LH versus those available. Odds ratio estimates with 95% …

Robust Microplate-Based Methods For Culturing And In Vivo Phenotypic Screening Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Timothy C. Haire, Cody Bell, Kirstin Cutshaw, Brendan Swiger, Kurt Winkelmann, Andrew G. Palmer

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Cr), a unicellular alga, is routinely utilized to study photosynthetic biochemistry, ciliary motility, and cellular reproduction. Its minimal culture requirements, unicellular morphology, and ease of transformation have made it a popular model system. Despite its relatively slow doubling time, compared with many bacteria, it is an ideal eukaryotic system for microplate-based studies utilizing either, or both, absorbance as well as fluorescence assays. Such microplate assays are powerful tools for researchers in the areas of toxicology, pharmacology, chemical genetics, biotechnology, and more. However, while microplate-based assays are valuable tools for screening biological systems, these methodologies can significantly alter the …

A Study Of The Lived Experience Of African American Males Who Transition From Out-Of-Home Care To Postsecondary Education, Marvin Cain Alexander Mar 2018

A Study Of The Lived Experience Of African American Males Who Transition From Out-Of-Home Care To Postsecondary Education, Marvin Cain Alexander

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While the literature is replete with studies of the factors contributing to the failure and social deviance of African American males, few qualitative studies have been conducted to determine the factors that support the success of African American males, and virtually none have focused on the transition of African American males from out-of-home care to postsecondary educational institutions. Despite the challenges faced preceding and during out-of-home care, African American males can transition to postsecondary educational institutions. There is a need to understand why some African American males who experience out-of-home care can accomplish this while others cannot. It is imperative …

Fatigue In Parkinson's Disease: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Exploring The Individual's Perspective, Amy E. Bruno Mar 2018

Fatigue In Parkinson's Disease: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Exploring The Individual's Perspective, Amy E. Bruno

Dissertations

Fatigue in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a major cause of disability and lower quality of life. It is often under-assessed by health care providers and under-recognized by individuals with PD as being part of their neurological disorder. A comprehensive literature review revealed that there is a lack of descriptive research from the individual's perspective regarding fatigue definitions in PD, self-management strategies, and its impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to uncover how individuals with PD define this symptom, the effect it has on one's quality of life, self-management strategies to lessen fatigue, and how individuals …

Insights Into The Cellular Trafficking Of Perilipin 5, Hannah M. Bailey Mar 2018

Insights Into The Cellular Trafficking Of Perilipin 5, Hannah M. Bailey

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Perilipins are a family of five proteins found on the surface of lipid storage droplets in nearly all tissues. These proteins act as cofactors for lipases and scaffolding for other proteins involved in lipid metabolism. In addition to the lipid droplet surface, members of the perilipin family have been found in the cytosol, endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane and mitochondria. The localization of these proteins is in part due to the phosphorylation state of the perilipin in question. Many other biological processes occur through kinase pathways, which have numerous cellular outcomes. Recently, perilipin 5 has been shown to localize to the …

Impact Of Obesity And Expression Of Obesity-Related Genes In The Progression Of Prostate Cancer In African American Men, Mmadili Nancy Ilozumba Mar 2018

Impact Of Obesity And Expression Of Obesity-Related Genes In The Progression Of Prostate Cancer In African American Men, Mmadili Nancy Ilozumba

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the US, the incidence and mortality rates of prostate cancer (PCa) are higher among African American men compared to European American men. Obesity is an important risk factor of PCa. Obesity is known to alter the gene expression profiles in prostate tumors. This study evaluates the impact of obesity and the expression of obesity-related genes on the progression of PCa in African American men.

The primary outcome of interest is biochemical recurrence (BCR) of PCa. There were 48 African American prostate cancer patients in the study. The tissue samples included 42 normal tissues, 40 Prostate Intraepithelial Neoplasia (PIN) and …
