The Cost Of Comforting: Phenomenological Study On Burnout Among Marriage And Family Therapists In Community Settings, Steven Razo

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Burnout is best defined as a condition consisting of symptoms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment (Maslach, 1982). It has been characterized as a process that develops through a variety of work and individual factors. Furthermore, it has been shown to impact one’s career, physical health, and mental well-being. Much of the literature on burnout has been studied on psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, with a paucity of studies focused on marriage and family therapist (MFTs). The lack of burnout literature on MFTs is in spite of their employment in many diverse clinical settings. The purpose of this …

The Relationship Of Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy To Breastfeeding Duration And Breastfeeding Exclusivity Of Full-Term Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Mixed Method Study, Karen Hylton-Mcguire Apr 2018

The Relationship Of Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy To Breastfeeding Duration And Breastfeeding Exclusivity Of Full-Term Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Mixed Method Study, Karen Hylton-Mcguire

Theses & Dissertations

Background

Research demonstrates better health outcomes for both women and their infants when infants are breast-fed. There is evidence that an increasing number of full-term, normal birth weight infants are being admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and that these infants receive less breast milk than their well full-term and preterm infant counter parts. The effect of short-term admission of full-term infants to the NICU on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding exclusivity and duration, and the facilitators of and barriers to breastfeeding success reported by these mothers, has not been well explored.

Questioning Polst: Practical And Religious Issues, Lloyd Steffen Apr 2018

Questioning Polst: Practical And Religious Issues, Lloyd Steffen

Dalhousie Law Journal

The Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) is a one-page transferrable medical chart insert designed to facilitate physician-patient communication about a patient's wishes at the end of life. The document as a chart addition is in widespread use today, but various criticisms have been leveled at POLST, the most serious being that POLST creates a slippery slope to illicit active euthanasia. This article examines the criticisms and finds that they fit two categories, the first being practical implementation problems. These problems are correctable given more and better training of medical care staff. The second and more serious ethical charge …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a highly prevalent health problem affecting more than 425 million people worldwide. It is associated with several detrimental complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy and cardiovascular diseases. Irisin is a novel hormone that plays a role in metabolism by stimulating the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) into beige adipose tissue which acquires properties that are similar to those of brown adipose tissue (BAT). Several studies have attempted to characterize the roles of irisin in DM and obesity, however, contradictory results have been reported and physiological roles of irisin have been questioned by several researchers. The Impact Of Advance Directives On The Intensity Of Care Received In The Acute Care Setting In Older Adults, Marsha Helen Tyacke Apr 2018

The Impact Of Advance Directives On The Intensity Of Care Received In The Acute Care Setting In Older Adults, Marsha Helen Tyacke

Dissertations (1934 -)

The proportion of older adults in the U.S. is rapidly increasing. One-third of Medicare expenditures occur in the final year of life, with nearly half resulting from acute exacerbations of chronic, progressive diseases(Riley & Lubitz, 2010). Older adults prefer comfort over life-sustaining care, and decreased intensity of care is associated with improved quality of life at the end-of-life (EOL). Advance directives (ADs) have been proposed as mechanisms to improve congruence between patient wishes and EOL care; however, the impact of ADs on care delivered in the acute care setting at the EOL for this population is unclear. A retrospective, correlation …

In this work, ten Emirati Chami cheese samples were collected and analyzed to determine their chemical composition, texture, rheology, and microbiological properties. Chami cheeses showed large variations in moisture (60.9–84.1%), protein (7.5–14.6%), fat (0.5–7.8%), and ash (3.4–8.0%) contents as well as in pH (3.6–4.4), and water activity (0.977–0.999%). The variation in fat content of samples suggested that extra fat was added; this added fat was either butter or vegetable oil as indicated by the fatty acid composition. The different samples showed peaks of variable size for fat melting. The sodium content in the 10 cheese samples varied from 223–2410 mg/kg, …

Families Communicating About Health: Conceptualization And Validation Of The Family Health Communication Quotient Scale, Erin E. Gafner Apr 2018

Families Communicating About Health: Conceptualization And Validation Of The Family Health Communication Quotient Scale, Erin E. Gafner

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

Research on family health communication is based in part on the assumption that families actually communicate about a wide variety of topics pertaining to their health and wellness (or lack thereof). However, whether they do communicate about health and wellness, and exactly what they communicate about concerning health and wellness as well as how often, remains undocumented. To begin to address this problem of documenting the extent to which families talk about health and wellness, this study adapted Warren and Neer’s (1986) Family Sex Communication Quotient to create and report the preliminary validation of a new measurement instrument called the …

The Stakes In Steak: Examining Barriers To And Opportunities For Alternatives To Animal Products In Canada, Angela Lee Apr 2018

The Stakes In Steak: Examining Barriers To And Opportunities For Alternatives To Animal Products In Canada, Angela Lee

Dalhousie Law Journal

This Article considers some of the different food innovations being presented as potential solutions to the myriad problems associated with conventionalmodels of industrial agriculture. Specifically,in vitro meat (IVM) and plant-based alternatives to animal products-and their corresponding regulatory and market structuresare compared and contrasted. Examining the idiosyncrasies around Canada's approach to regulating these products reveals that the respective degrees of scrutiny may not be commensurate with the respective degrees of risk, due in part to the influence of powerful industry actors who wish to maintain the status quo. Given the significance and scope of the problems implicated by the industrial food …

Maintaining the vitality of the dental pulp, the highly innervated and highly vascular, innermost layer of the tooth, is a critical goal of any dental procedure. Upon injury, targeting the pulp with specific therapies is challenging because it is encased in hard tissues. This project describes a method that can effectively deliver therapeutic agents to the pulp. This method relies on the use of nanoparticles that can be actively steered using magnetic forces to the pulp, traveling through naturally occurring channels in the dentin (the middle layer of the tooth). This method can reduce the inflammation of injured pulp and …

Analysis Of A Functional Heterologous Chromosomal Replication Origin Transplant In E. Coli, Rohit Pradip Kadam Apr 2018

Analysis Of A Functional Heterologous Chromosomal Replication Origin Transplant In E. Coli, Rohit Pradip Kadam

Theses and Dissertations

To ensure that all cells replicate their genomes faithfully before they divide, the initiation step of chromosome replication must be tightly regulated during the cell cycle. In bacteria, new rounds of replication are triggered by the assembly of a higher order protein complex, termed the orisome, that unwinds a well-defined origin (oriC) region on the circular chromosome, and prepares it for new replication forks. Orisomes comprise multiple copies of a highly conserved initiator protein, DnaA, and instructions for ordered orisome assembly are encoded into the oriC nucleotide sequence of nearly all bacteria as specifically-spaced clusters of 9 base pair (bp) …
