Health Risks In Medical Homes And Their Effects On Emergency Department And Inpatient Expenditures: A Focus On Patient-Centered Primary Care Homes In Oregon, Kweku Nyameyepa Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

The fragmented approaches to delivering health care services in the United States, along with the associated structural inefficiencies and unsustainable increases in health care costs affecting all payers, compel the need for reform. Various federal and state-level delivery system reform models have emerged in response.

The Medical Home (MH) is one of such reform models. In 2004 a national initiative entitled "The Future for Family Medicine Project" identified the lack of emphasis on comprehensive primary care, especially for chronic care patients, and proposed the introduction of MHs to improve comprehensive primary care delivery for every patient. Oregon's MH variant, the …

ETSU Faculty Works

The impetus for the recognition of the need for legal partners in healthcare came from Boston City Hospital in 1993. The hospital provided care to the largest uninsured and underinsured population in the New England states. The pediatric patients were noted by Dr. Barry Zuckerman to have difficulty in recovering from medical illnesses. He linked their inability to improve their health to poor housing, food insecurity, and basic social determinants of health. His hiring of a part-time lawyer led to a national movement for the development of medical-legal partnerships. The American Bar Association, the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnerships at …

Background: Obesity is a complex health issue, which results from the interaction between many determinants: genetics, physical environments, society, economy, and culture. Data indicate that about 19% of American children (2 to 19 years) have obesity, a condition that considerably affects physical and mental health and that usually continues into adulthood. Aside from its direct physical and mental effects, there is strong evidence that childhood obesity is strongly associated with early onset and adult cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Family and parental factors, which have both genetics and environmental components, have long been implicated in previous research as major forces in …

Fighting For Your Life In America: A Study Of "Right To Try" Laws Throughout The Country, Danielle Delgrosso Apr 2018

Fighting For Your Life In America: A Study Of "Right To Try" Laws Throughout The Country, Danielle Delgrosso

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that there should be a federal statute granting terminally ill patients access to experimental drugs, but that the Trickett Wendler Act, as written is not the proper vehicle for change. An ideal congressional “Right to Try” statute should be crafted to make experimental drugs realistically obtainable for terminally ill patients while protecting those patients and their quality of life. The Trickett Wendler Act’s weaknesses prevent it from reaching this objective because it is too deferential to already unclear state Right to Try laws. Part I explores the right to try movement generally, explaining what a “right …

Ankle Kinetics And Plantarflexor Morphology In Older Runners With Different Lifetime Running Exposures, Ramzi Muhannad Majaj Apr 2018

Ankle Kinetics And Plantarflexor Morphology In Older Runners With Different Lifetime Running Exposures, Ramzi Muhannad Majaj

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Aging is associated with a decline in physical function, cardiovascular health and quality of life. Running promotes better cardiovascular health and has positive effects on the musculoskeletal system in older adults. However, older adults have lower ankle moments and positive powers during running, and exhibit changes in plantarflexor morphology than young adults. These age-related changes contribute to slower running speeds and reduced movement intensity that could influence cardiovascular health. Since older runners who run as much as younger runners exhibit youthful ankle mechanical outputs, running exposure may preserve the locomotor factors that mediate movement speed. The purpose of this study …
