Online Communication Settings And The Qualitative Research Process: Acclimating Students And Novice Researchers, Katherine Gregory Jan 2018

Online Communication Settings And The Qualitative Research Process: Acclimating Students And Novice Researchers, Katherine Gregory

Publications and Research

In the last 20 years, qualitative research scholars have begun to interrogate methodological and analytic issues concerning online research settings as both data sources and instruments for digital methods. This article examines the adaptation of parts of a qualitative research curriculum for understanding online communication settings. I propose methodological best practices for researchers and educators that I developed while teaching research methods to undergraduate and graduate students across disciplinary departments and discuss obstacles faced during my own research while gathering data from online sources. This article confronts issues concerning the disembodied aspects of applying what in practice should be rooted …

Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Sustaining Peace In Sierra Leone Through Collaboration Of The Dominant Ethnic Groups, Osman Kabba Jan 2018

Sustaining Peace In Sierra Leone Through Collaboration Of The Dominant Ethnic Groups, Osman Kabba

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is convincing evidence in the literature that the civil war fought in Sierra Leone beginning in 1991 was the result of social and political grievances between the 3 dominant ethnic groups, Krio, Mende, and Temne. Hitherto, there were no studies which explored their collaboration on postconflict sustainable peacebuilding efforts. By closely examining the political behaviors of these groups, this qualitative expert study was designed to create understanding of how collaboration between them supported postconflict sustainable peace-building efforts. Data consisted of observational notes and semistructured interviews of 21 Sierra Leonean experts living in the United States. Data were analyzed using …

Knowledge, Beliefs, And Perceptions About Tuberculosis Among Haitian Immigrants And Haitian Americans Living In Miami-Dade County, Florida, Leslie Barbour Jan 2018

Knowledge, Beliefs, And Perceptions About Tuberculosis Among Haitian Immigrants And Haitian Americans Living In Miami-Dade County, Florida, Leslie Barbour

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Tuberculosis (TB) kills 1.7 million people each year, and 1/3rd of the world's population is estimated to have latent TB. It was once the deadliest disease in the United States but is now relatively rare and, if treated properly, it is curable. Migrants from TB-endemic countries, such as Haiti, are one source of TB transmission to the US, and the prevalence of TB remains high and is increasing in Little Haiti, Florida. Data on the knowledge and perceptions of Haitian immigrants and Haitian Americans about TB is inadequate. The purpose of this qualitative research was to study the TB-related knowledge, …

Precision Of Provider Licensure Data For Mapping Member Accessibility To Medicaid Managed Care Provider Networks., Nathaniel Bell, Ana Lopez-De Fede, Rebecca C. Wilkerson, Kathy Mayfield-Smith

Publications

Background: In July 2018, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) updated its Medicaid Managed Care (MMC) regulations that govern network and access standards for enrollees. There have been few published studies of whether there is accurate geographic information on primary care providers to monitor network adequacy. Methods: We analyzed a sample of nurse practitioner (NP) and physician address data registered in the state labor, licensing, and regulation (LLR) boards and the National Provider Index (NPI) using employment location data contained in the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) data file. Our main outcome measures were address discordance (%) at the …

Maternal Socioeconomic Status And Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine Uptake, Shawn Lockett Jan 2018

Maternal Socioeconomic Status And Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine Uptake, Shawn Lockett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are more than 79 million people in the U.S. currently infected with human papillomavirus (HPV), with an estimated 14 million new infections annually. There is a lack of knowledge about the maternal socioeconomic influences and uptake of the HPV vaccine series. Infection with HPV can cause cervical cancer in women, and there are over 11,000 cervical cancer diagnoses in the U.S. responsible for 4000 deaths annually. Vaccination coverage to prevent HPV infection does not meet the Healthy People 2020 goals of an 80% vaccination rate in the U.S. In this study, associations were tested between maternal SES variables and …

Utility Of The Hpt Framework For Improving Distance Education In Nigeria, Equi Nwulu Jan 2018

Utility Of The Hpt Framework For Improving Distance Education In Nigeria, Equi Nwulu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The fusion of the Internet with instructional design, and curricula delivery methods eliminated transactional distance in online learning. However, distance education (DE) in Nigeria has not aligned its pedagogy to the new reality in technology. The purposes of this non-experimental, predictive, validity study were to determine faculty and administrators' perceived barriers and concerns to online adoption and to validate the behavior engineering model (BEM) instrument. Ninety-six respondents from four public universities in Nigeria completed the questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used respectively, to assess barriers and concerns militating against faculty and administrators' online adoption, as well …

Strengthening Jamaica's Anticorruption Policy With An Independent Agency, Curt Brown Jan 2018

Strengthening Jamaica's Anticorruption Policy With An Independent Agency, Curt Brown

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Corruption is a kind of behavior that undermines good governance. Current research has suggested that Jamaica's present anticorruption policy is ineffective, and needs strengthening. A civic organization in Jamaica has advocated for an independent anticorruption agency, with both investigative and prosecutorial powers to strengthen Jamaica's anticorruption policy. Little is known about the perspectives from the Jamaican business community on this concept. The purpose of this study was to discover and understand perspectives from the Jamaican business community on this concept. A framework included in this study is the principal-agent theory, which provides an understanding of the essence and relevance of …

Using Marketing Strategies To Advance Millennial Prospects At Credit Unions In Jamaica, Minetta Edwards

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Content of marketing strategies not only appeals to consumers based on their demographics and identity but consumers can also respond more positively to marketing strategies that target their purchasing behaviors. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore how financial advisors at credit unions in Jamaica are using marketing strategies to advance millennial prospects, in an environment where consumers recognize commercial banks as the dominant institution in the financial industry. The conceptual framework for this study was the sustainability theory, with a direct focus on economic sustainability. The data collection process involved semistructured face-to-face-interviews with 5 financial …

Social Media Use By College Students And Teachers: An Application Of Utaut2, Xiangyun Huang Jan 2018

Social Media Use By College Students And Teachers: An Application Of Utaut2, Xiangyun Huang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Social media has been increasingly used in education to facilitate innovative instruction. Mainland Chinese people could not use popular social media platforms such as FacebookTM because the government blocked them. Little research studied social media use by Mainland Chinese students and teachers in the isolated network environment. This quantitative study utilized social constructivism, connectivism, and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) as the theoretical base. Research questions explored the influence of 6 UTAUT2 predictors on social media use intention and the influence of social media use intention on social media use behavior. The study used a …

Assimilation For Hispanics, Generational Standing, Education And Income: A Correlational Empirical Study., Tammy B. Burroughs Jan 2018

Assimilation For Hispanics, Generational Standing, Education And Income: A Correlational Empirical Study., Tammy B. Burroughs

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Latino immigrants who lack assimilation into U.S. society often experience discrimination and immigrant backlash. The purpose of this exploration was to better understand the historical lack of assimilation of Latino immigrants, so they may avoid discrimination and have more access to goods and services. Self-determinism helped explain why the Latino immigrant group has a problem assimilating due to exclusionary practices, while segmented assimilation offered explanations on why assimilation is difficult. In this study, assimilation was measured according to English mastery by Spanish speakers. The research question was focused on what extent the level of generational standing, education, and income relate …

La Instantánea De Un Desastre "Histórico:" El Reclamo Por La Justicia Y La Reválida De La Identidad En "Cabo Trafalgar" De Arturo-Pérez Reverte, Agustín Martínez-Samos Jan 2018

La Instantánea De Un Desastre "Histórico:" El Reclamo Por La Justicia Y La Reválida De La Identidad En "Cabo Trafalgar" De Arturo-Pérez Reverte, Agustín Martínez-Samos

The Coastal Review

In Cabo Trafalgar (2004) by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, I examine the turbulent historical fabric of the Battle of Trafalgar as a “harmful organic entity,” capable of altering the distinct circumstances of the peripheral subject. I observe how the narrative voice denotes social anxiety and loneliness on those whose meaning in the geopolitical context of that era is a mere anecdote, while presenting the emerging tensions between individual identity and collective uncertainty. I present how the actions of professional seamen and pressmen create a rectifier methodology that challenges the historical oblivion experienced by the participants in this tragic battle. Finally, I note …

Defender Automatedmedia Feeder System, Patrick Marie, Nathan Bannon, Jimmy Dunwoody, Andrew Anderson Jan 2018

Defender Automatedmedia Feeder System, Patrick Marie, Nathan Bannon, Jimmy Dunwoody, Andrew Anderson

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects

Team Defender was tasked under the sponsorship of Neptune Benson to design a device capable of automating the transfer of their filtration media of choice, perlite, from the packaging into their varying Defender ®Regenerative Filtration system models. The current process used for this media transfer is time consuming, inefficient, labor intensive, and leads to overexposure to the perlite media.

There were a multitude of parameters that needed to be considered during the concept generation of this particular design in order to properly solve the task at hand. In addition to the aforementioned automation of the feed process and inherent compatibility …
