Rising Levels Of Temperature And Co2 Antagonistically Affect Phytoplankton Primary Productivity In The South China Sea., Yong Zhang, Tifeng Wang, He Li, Nanou Bao, Jason M. Hall-Spencer, Kunshan Gao
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Coastal and offshore waters in the South China Sea are warming and becoming acidified due to rising atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), yet the combined effects of these two stressors are poorly known. Here, we carried out shipboard incubations at ambient (398 μatm) and elevated (934 μatm) pCO2 at in situ and in situ+1.8 °C temperatures and we measured primary productivity at two coastal and two offshore stations. Both warming and increased CO2 levels individually increased phytoplankton productivity at all stations, but the combination of high temperature and high CO2 did not, reflecting an antagonistic effect. Warming decreased Chl …

Partial Replacement Of Cement For Waste Aggregates In Concrete Coastal And Marine Infrastructure: A Foundation For Ecological Enhancement?, Ryan S. Mcmanus, Nicholas Archibald, Sean Comber, Antony M. Knights, Richard C. Thompson, Louise B. Firth
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The effects of climate change and an expanding human population are driving the need for the expansion of coastal and marine infrastructure (CMI), the development of which is introducing hard substrate into the marine environment on a previously unseen scale. Whilst the majority of previous research has focussed on how physical features affect intertidal macrobiotic communities, this study considered the effects of differences in the chemical composition of concrete on subtidal biofilm and macrobiotic communities. Two commonly used cement replacements, pulverised fly ash (PFA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), were used in a combination of proportions to assess how …

Turning The Tide On Trash: Empowering European Educators And School Students To Tackle Marine Litter, Bonny L. Hartley, Sabine Pahl, Matthew Holland, Iro Alampei, Joana M. Veiga, Richard C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine litter is a global environmental problem, and working with educators and school students has much potential to facilitate greater public understanding of the solutions and to enable action. This research examined two new educational activities designed to empower European educators and school students to engage with the topic of marine litter, particularly focusing on behavior and on known determinants of behavior rather than knowledge alone. In Study 1, 120 educators participated in an online training course on marine litter, and completed a pre- and post-course questionnaire to assess change. After participating in the course, educators felt significantly more skillful …
Espeletia Giant Rosette Plants Are Reliable Biological Indicators Of Time Since Fire In Andean Grasslands, Ma Zomer, Pm Ramsay
Espeletia Giant Rosette Plants Are Reliable Biological Indicators Of Time Since Fire In Andean Grasslands, Ma Zomer, Pm Ramsay
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
© 2017 Springer Science+Business Media B.V., part of Springer Nature Páramo grasslands in the tropical Andes are fire-prone ecosystems and an understanding of their fire ecology is fundamental to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. Fire registers are normally impractical in these remote, cloud-covered landscapes, but Espeletia giant rosette plants have been proposed as biological indicators of time since fire in páramos. Espeletia giant stem rosettes tolerate fire well, protecting apical buds in at the heart of their leaf rosettes, and for some species, germination is known to be enhanced by fire. As the plant grows, its dead leaves remain attached …
My Brain Is So Wired; Neuroimaging's Role In Competency Cases Involved Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin, Alison Lynch
My Brain Is So Wired; Neuroimaging's Role In Competency Cases Involved Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin, Alison Lynch
Articles & Chapters
In this article, we consider the therapeutic jurisprudence implications of the use of neuroimaging techniques in assessing whether a defendant is competent to stand trial, a topic that has been the subject of no prior legal commentary. Recent attention paid to neuroscience in the criminal process has focused on questions of mitigation and competency to be executed, but the potential of such evidence transcends these areas.
There has been almost no attention paid to its potential impact on a critical intersection between the criminal trial process and inquiries into mental or psychological status: a defendant’s trial competency. Less than a …
What Authorizes The Image? The Visual Economy Of Post-Secular Jurisprudence, Richard Sherwin
What Authorizes The Image? The Visual Economy Of Post-Secular Jurisprudence, Richard Sherwin
Articles & Chapters
In law’s visual economy our commitment to justice grows out of a renewed encounter with an interior libidinal source whose ongoing collective investment binds us to the nomos in which we live. We experience this corporeal bond in paintings, films, and video images on screens large and small. In the ethically inflected aesthetic of post-secular jurisprudence, justice is to law as beauty is to art. As distant as an abstract expressionist canvas, as close as any neighbor, or indeed any screen on which the neighbor becomes real to us. That is where we behold the source and instantiation of law’s …

'Your Old Road Is/Rapidly Agin': International Human Rights Standards And Their Impact On Forensic Psychologists, The Practice Of Forensic Psychology, And The Conditions Of Institutionalization Of Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin
Articles & Chapters
An earlier version of this paper was presented as the Lynn Stuart Weiss lecture at the American Psychological Association yearly conference, sponsored by the American Psychology-Law Society and the American Psychology Foundation, August 2016, Denver, Colorado.
For years, considerations of the relationship between international human rights standards and the work of forensic psychologists have focused on the role of organized psychology in prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghirab. That issue has been widely discussed and debated, and these discussions show no sign of abating. But there has been virtually no attention given to another issue of international human …

Central Issues In The Protection Of Child Migrants, Mary Crock, Lenni Benson
Articles & Chapters
In this introductory chapter we identify themes that will be carried throughout the book. We begin in section 2 with a discussion of the human rights challenges presented by children on the move, posing questions that our contributors will address as they build on the themes we identify. This is followed by an examination ofobstacles that have been created to recognising child migrants as rights bearers. After setting out in section 4 a brief outline of the book’s structure, the chapter concludes with some comments on global initiatives that have been made to address the challenges associated with mass migration …
May Federal Prosecutors Take Direction From The President?, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe
May Federal Prosecutors Take Direction From The President?, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe
Articles & Chapters
Suppose the president sought to serve as prosecutor-in-chief telling prosecutors when to initiate or dismiss criminal charges in individual cases and making other discretionary decisions that are normally reserved to trained professionals familiar with the facts, law, and traditions of the U.S. Department of Justice. To what extent may prosecutors follow the president's direction? In recent presidential administrations, the president has respected prosecutorial independence; while making policy decisions, the president deferred to the Attorney General and subordinate federal prosecutors to conduct individual criminal cases. In a recent article, we argued that this is as it should be because the president …
Somatic Embryogenesis Of Magnolia Spp. And Cultivars, Kathryn Plotke
Somatic Embryogenesis Of Magnolia Spp. And Cultivars, Kathryn Plotke
Plant Sciences
This study focused on induction of somatic embryogenesis of Magnolia spp. and cultivars utilizing leaf and seed (immature and mature) tissues with attempted micropropagation experiments. In a preliminary experiment, direct embryo regeneration was successful in a single leaf tissue of M. ‘Yellow Bird’. After various micropropagation experiments, microshoot proliferation rates decreased. As a result of minimal leaf material, mature seeds were utilized but had contamination issues. Subsequent experiments utilized immature seeds. M. ‘Leonard Messel’ and M. stellata had significantly greater embryo regeneration rates and M. ‘Rosea’, M. stellata, and M. kobus had greater callus induction rates. Woody Plant Medium had …
Development Of A Genetic Transformation System Of Raspberry Cultivars For Gene Function Analysis, Changhyeon Kim
Development Of A Genetic Transformation System Of Raspberry Cultivars For Gene Function Analysis, Changhyeon Kim
Plant Sciences
An Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system of purple raspberry ‘Amethyst’ was established after a series of experiments that determined the effect of genotype, inoculum density, and co-cultivation time on transformation. In this study, a plant regeneration protocol was established for ‘Joan J’ and ‘Polana’ (the regeneration protocol of ‘Amethyst’ was previously developed). Agrobacterium-mediated transformation was conducted for all three cultivars. The minimum killing level of hygromycin B and kanamycin was determined. Inoculum density and co-cultivation time were optimized. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) verified a successful transformation of ‘Amethyst’ with the frequency of 3.3 ~ 4.4 % when leaves were infected with Agrobacterium …

Privacy, Notice, And Design, Ari Ezra Waldman
Articles & Chapters
Design configures our relationship with a space, whether offline or online. In particular, the design of built online environments can constrain our ability to understand and respond to websites’ data use practices or it can enhance agency by giving us control over information. Design, therefore, poses dangers and offers opportunity to protect privacy online. This Article is a comprehensive theoretical and empirical approach to the design of privacy policies.
Privacy notices today do not convey information in a way understandable to most internet users. This is because they are designed without the needs of real people in mind. They are …
Designing Without Privacy, Ari Ezra Waldman
Designing Without Privacy, Ari Ezra Waldman
Articles & Chapters
In Privacy on the Ground, the law and information scholars Kenneth Bamberger and Deirdre Mulligan showed that empowered chief privacy officers (CPOs) are pushing their companies to take consumer privacy seriously, integrating privacy into the designs of new technologies. But their work was just the beginning of a larger research agenda. CPOs may set policies at the top, but they alone cannot embed robust privacy norms into the corporate ethos, practice, and routine. As such, if we want the mobile apps, websites, robots, and smart devices we use to respect our privacy, we need to institutionalize privacy throughout the corporations …

She's Nobody's Child/The Law Can't Touch Her At All': Seeking To Bring Dignity To Legal Proceedings Involving Juveniles, Michael L. Perlin, Alison Lynch
Articles & Chapters
Recent Supreme Court decisions declaring unconstitutional both capital punishment (Roper v. Simmons, 2005) and life without parole (Graham v. Florida, 2010) in cases involving juveniles might lead a casual observer to think that we are now in an era in which dignity of juveniles is privileged in the legal system and in which humiliation and shame are subordinated. This observation, sadly, would be wrong.
Inquiries into a range of issues involving juveniles – commitment to psychiatric institutions; trials in juvenile courts; aspects of criminal procedure that, in many jurisdictions, bar juveniles from raising the incompetency status or the insanity defense; …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Given the increasing popularity and availability of location tracking devices, large quantities of Spatio-Temporal data (ST-data) are available from many different sources. For the ST-data, reflecting the mobile characteristic of the world, it is essential to build a functional system to perform quickly interactive analysis. In this paper, we present an analysis and visualization system, NUPT ST-data Miner, which facilitates users to visualize and analyze ST-data. It (1) provides a flexible and extensible framework based on cloud computing platform, (2) is able to quickly retrieve specified ST-data, (3) integrated multiple functions for the ST-data. To demonstrate its efficiency, we validate …
A Clothesline Theology For The World: How A Value-Driven Grand Narrative Of Scripture Can Frame The Gospel, Tom Steffen
A Clothesline Theology For The World: How A Value-Driven Grand Narrative Of Scripture Can Frame The Gospel, Tom Steffen
Great Commission Research Journal
This article attempts to answer the question, why is it important to view Scripture as a single grand narrative? Too many of us are specialist in fragmentation when it comes to Scripture. We therefore continue to perpetuate a fragmented understanding of Scripture, and her Author. To grasp a more comprehensive picture of the face of God we must be able to move beyond the individual pieces of clothing placed on the clothesline, whether linear or circular, and learn to value how they all tie together to form a comprehensive wardrobe that brings honor to the Wearer.
