Examining A Hate Speech Corpus For Hate Speech Detection And Popularity Prediction, Filip Klubicka, Raquel Fernandez
Examining A Hate Speech Corpus For Hate Speech Detection And Popularity Prediction, Filip Klubicka, Raquel Fernandez
Conference papers
As research on hate speech becomes more and more relevant every day, most of it is still focused on hate speech detection. By attempting to replicate a hate speech detection experiment performed on an existing Twitter corpus annotated for hate speech, we highlight some issues that arise from doing research in the field of hate speech, which is essentially still in its infancy. We take a critical look at the training corpus in order to understand its biases, while also using it to venture beyond hate speech detection and investigate whether it can be used to shed light on other …

The Terror Network Industrial Complex: A Measurement And Analysis Of Terrorist Networks And War Stocks, James Usher, Pierpaolo Dondio
Conference papers
This paper presents a measurement study and analysis of the structure of multiple Islamic terrorist networks to determine if similar characteristics exist between those networks. We examine data gathered from four terrorist groups: Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) consisting of six terror networks. Our study contains 471 terrorists’ nodes and 2078 links. Each terror network is compared in terms efficiency, communication and composition of network metrics. The paper examines the effects these terrorist attacks had on US aerospace and defence stocks (herein War stocks). We found that the Islamic terror groups increase recruitment during the planned attacks, …

A Comparison Of Classical Versus Deep Learning Techniques For Abusive Content Detection On Social Media Sites, Hao Che, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
The automated detection of abusive content on social media websites faces a variety of challenges including imbalanced training sets, the identification of an appropriate feature representation and the selection of optimal classifiers. Classifiers such as support vector machines (SVM), combined with bag of words or ngram feature representation, have traditionally dominated in text classification for decades. With the recent emergence of deep learning and word embeddings, an increasing number of researchers have started to focus on deep neural networks. In this paper, our aim is to explore cutting-edge techniques in automated abusive content detection. We use two deep learning approaches: …
Numerical Simulation Study Of Factors Affecting Production Well Gel Treatment Using Linear Models With Crossflow, Kewei Shi
Masters Theses
"Conformance control is an inevitable topic related to water-flooding. Polymer gel has been proved to enhance oil recovery by blocking the existing water-breakthrough channels. Water that is injected subsequently will be directed to the unswept portion of the reservoir, replacing part of the remaining oil and increasing the oil-recovery factor. Prior to pilot tests of polymer gel treatment, laboratory experiments and numerical simulations are used to design the tests. Understanding physical meanings of key parameters that affect polymer gel treatment and relating the parameters from lab data and the simulator benefit field operation design.
This thesis study tries to evaluate …
Universal Wavefront Transmission Through Disordered Media, Jayson Robert Summers
Universal Wavefront Transmission Through Disordered Media, Jayson Robert Summers
Masters Theses
”When electromagnetic waves propagate through random dielectric media, they scatter in a predictable, deterministic way. The process is also fully reversible. If one sends an exiting wave backward through the same material, it will converge back to its original form and location in the same amount of time it took to originally propagate through the material. Due to this predictability, a great deal of research has went into studying these scattering processes in multimode fibers, diffusers, biological tissues, and other media. Scientists have turned random scattering material into focusing lenses, image transmitters, and highly transmitting media by controlling the impinging …

Algorithmic Design And Architectural Machines, Hannah Langr
Algorithmic Design And Architectural Machines, Hannah Langr
Architecture Theses
What is our relationship with technology? As designers, we sit on the precipice between the abstract and the alien; between meaningful imagination and reductive otherness. With the permeation of algorithmic software in the architectural profession, are we able to design algorithmically with meaning? How can digital means aid poetic architecture? This thesis opens a less examined side of algorithmic thinking within the dialogue between designers and the technology we use. Language, humor, and pataphors become building materials in this architectural translation of ‘Pataphysics, a rebel, absurdist science created by playwright Alfred Jarry. A dense prospection and oscillation through philosophy, history, …
Putting The “Gay” In Gamers: Increasing Identification With Homosexuals Through Video Games, Matthew D. Olah
Putting The “Gay” In Gamers: Increasing Identification With Homosexuals Through Video Games, Matthew D. Olah
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Priming out-groups and taking the perspective of out-group members increases implicit and explicit identification with out-groups. Because the popularity of video games has increased dramatically over the past few decades and they have become an influential form of media, the current study investigated video games as another potential strategy to increase identification with and reduce prejudice against out-groups. Specifically, I investigated how manipulating the sexual orientation of the video game character participants used influenced implicit and explicit identification with homosexuals and implicit and explicit prejudice against homosexuals. Additionally, I investigated whether implicit and explicit identification with homosexuals would mediate the …

Calibration Of Mine Ventilation Network Models Using The Non-Linear Optimization Algorithm, Guang Xu, Jinxin Huang, Baisheng Nie, Duncan Chalmers, Zhuoming Yang
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Effective ventilation planning is vital to underground mining. To ensure stable operation of the ventilation system and to avoid airflow disorder, mine ventilation network (MVN) models have been widely used in simulating and optimizing the mine ventilation system. However, one of the challenges for MVN model simulation is that the simulated airflow distribution results do not match the measured data. To solve this problem, a simple and effective calibration method is proposed based on the non-linear optimization algorithm. The calibrated model not only makes simulated airflow distribution results in accordance with the on-site measured data, but also controls the errors …

Antibacterial Properties Of Tio2 Nanotubes Coated With Nano-Zno And Nano-Ag, Urvashi Fowdar Gunputh
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
TiO2 nanotubes grown on titanium alloy are known to increase the biocompatibility of the alloy when used in dental/orthopaedic implants. Furthermore, their nanotubular structures can act as antibacterial agent carrier and as a scaffold for tissue engineering with the aim of adding antibacterial properties to the implant. This study aims at fabricating an antibacterial and biocompatible nanocomposite coating on Ti-6Al-4V involving nano-ZnO and nano-Ag. Initially, TiO2 nanotubes were self-assembled on the polished surface of medical grade Ti-6Al-4V alloy discs using anodisation. First silver nanoparticles were chemically reduced from silver ammonia using delta-δ-gluconolactone for different duration on the nanotubes to form …

Brown algae are an important group of organisms inhabiting coastal ecosystems worldwide. Because of their sessile nature, they are exposed to natural abiotic stresses such as high and low irradiances, desiccation, thermal fluctuations and mechanical stress, as well as anthropogenic-derived stresses such as chemical pollution. While the impacts of metal pollution affect brown algae on a local scale, there is growing concern on the potential interactions between pollutants and abiotic pressures resulting from global climate change. The main objective of this study was to determine the nature of the interactions (synergistic, additive or antagonistic) of different concentrations of copper in …
Public Perception Of Invasive Amphibians: Using Citizen Science To Inform Management Of Invasive Non-Native Species, Nicola Morris
Public Perception Of Invasive Amphibians: Using Citizen Science To Inform Management Of Invasive Non-Native Species, Nicola Morris
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Invasive non-native species (INNS) can cause problems - impacting the environment, economy and people's lives. Including the public in research through citizen science can engage communities and assist scientists in gaining access to sites for INNS management. Concerns have been raised regarding the validity of using citizen science data in research. This report aims to address those concerns to ensure that data of suitable quality is generated. A questionnaire conducted in an area known to have both invasive and native amphibians posed questions on participants connectedness to nature (using the NR-6 scale), their perception of INNS and opinions on INNS …
Consumer Willingness To Pay And Economic Viability Of Speciality Milk Products, Andrew Jones
Consumer Willingness To Pay And Economic Viability Of Speciality Milk Products, Andrew Jones
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Industrial change over the past century has driven a decline in UK dairy farming. This study examines potential diversification within the sector through investigating consumer demand and the economic viability of ‘speciality’ milk products. The data for this study was collected from both consumers and producers in order to produce a model integrating both supply and demand economics. Information from consumers was collected via a questionnaire whereby dairy farming knowledge, opinion and willingness to pay (WTP) for speciality milk products was investigated. As economic or production data for speciality products is not readily available, this information was gathered through multiple …

Decoupled, Linear, And Energy Stable Finite Element Method For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy Phase Field Model, Yali Gao, Xiaoming He, Liquan Mei, Xiaofeng Yang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a phase field model of the coupled two-phase free flow and two-phase porous media flow. This model consists of Cahn—Hilliard—Navier—Stokes equations in the free flow region and Cahn—Hilliard—Darcy equations in the porous media region that are coupled by seven interface conditions. The coupled system is decoupled based on the interface conditions and the solution values on the interface from the previous time step. A fully discretized scheme with finite elements for the spatial discretization is developed to solve the decoupled system. In order to deal with the difficulties arising from the …

Research into the perceptions, practices and engagement of coaches with performance analysis is fundamental to informing the continued development of the discipline and its practitioners. The aim of this study was to survey a large sample of coaches of varying profiles, regarding their use and integration of performance analysis, to explore its perceived value and barriers to its use. Survey data were analysed from 538 Irish coaches qualified at Level 1 and above (82% male), from 37 sports. A spectrum of coaches’ engagement with performance analysis, ranging from no formal performance analysis (49%), to coaches doing their own analysis (coach-as-analyst, …
Legal Jurisdiction And The Deterritorialization Of Data, Paul Schiff Berman
Legal Jurisdiction And The Deterritorialization Of Data, Paul Schiff Berman
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Electronic data—everything from e-mails and text messages to Facebook and Instagram posts to Twitter pronouncements to drone warfare data to search algorithms to financial transactions to cloud data storage—travels around the globe with little relationship to physical territory. In addition, all of this data is often in the custody and control of data intermediaries such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, private military contractors, and so on.
Three important consequences flow from this ubiquitous technology-enabled, data-driven global societal activity. First, the territorial location of data becomes increasingly arbitrary and substantively unimportant. If I, as a U.S. citizen based in …

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times -- a year marked by genuine progress in public procurement law in some nations, and partial paralysis in others. This article presents the experience of Sweden (as part of the European Union), the United Kingdom (which is slated soon to depart from the EU, via “Brexit”), and the United States (in the first year of the Trump administration). While Sweden and other members of the European Union continue to develop a vital and evolving body of public procurement law, the United Kingdom has been distracted by Brexit, and …

False Claims Act: Greater Doj Scrutiny Of Frivolous Qui Tam Actions?, Steven L. Schooner
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This short piece discusses recent (internal) Justice Department guidance for attorneys handling False Claims (FCA) Act cases. In a dramatic policy and practice shift, the memorandum recommends that “when evaluating a recommendation to decline intervention in a qui tam action, attorneys should also consider whether the government’s interests are served. . .by seeking dismissal pursuant to 31 U.S.C. § 3730(c)(2)(A).” The essay applauds DOJ's apparent acknowledgement that its attorneys have more than a pro forma duty to consider moving to dismiss frivolous qui tam suits.
The essay discusses DOJ's new rubric or menu of factors for deciding whether to dismiss …
Unbundling Populism, David Fontana
Unbundling Populism, David Fontana
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Populism is having its moment on our constitutional center stage, but the way we are treating this moment is adding to the risks that populism poses to our liberal democratic constitutional order. Populism has primarily been defined in our public discussions by the loudest self-identifying populists active in democratic politics at the moment. Populism has therefore often been treated as a bundled-together concept, merging not just anti-establishment sentiments, but also authoritarian and xenophobic ones as well. Populism is an eight-letter word that is then treated like a pejorative four-letter one. Populism, though, is a they, and not an it. The …
Cost-Plus Patent Damages, Michael B. Abramowicz
Cost-Plus Patent Damages, Michael B. Abramowicz
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This Article assesses recent proposals to use risk-adjusted costs of producing an invention as a basis for either setting patent damages or valuing patents taken by eminent domain. In theory, cost-plus damages can address one of the central challenges of patent law: ensuring that a patentee does not obtain excessive rents for an invention. But cost-plus damages have three principal problems. First, risk may be difficult to estimate, and estimates may be infected by hindsight. Second, if the permitted rate of return is too low, there may be insufficient incentives to invent.
Indeed, even a rate of return that seems …

This Article considers the impact of changing family structures on aging in contemporary America. It looks at two critical and interrelated aspects of aging—economic security and caretaking—and offers policy suggestions on how to improve the financial stability of and caretaking possibilities for elders. The core thesis is that our current social, legal, and economic structure for growing old is organized around the nuclear family with respect to both caretaking and financial security. As family structures change in terms of partnering (and re-partnering and non-partnering) and number of children, and with the increase in economic inequality, support for old age needs …

Corruption In Public Education, Cade M. Olmstead
Corruption In Public Education, Cade M. Olmstead
Undergraduate Student Work
Public education is a key civil institution, and its functions have important implications for the well-being and development any modern society. But as a public institution, it is not free from crime and corrupt influence, especially in areas dealing with monetary exchange. Much research has been conducted looking at corruption, but investigations and analyses specifically concerned with corruption in education are sparse. Inquiries into the state of corruption in the former Soviet bloc and China are present but research into the United States’ situation has hitherto been neglected. Reliable data must first be identified before such analyses can take place. …
