International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Brazil is the largest country in Latin America and has a considerable amount of air traffic volume domestically and internationally. Wildlife strikes are an increasing safety and economic concern for aviation operations in Brazil. The Brazilian Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) has published annual reports summarizing the results of analyses of the data in a national level since 2009. The goal of this study was to supplement the CENIPA’s annual reports with information derived from the analysis of wildlife strikes to aviation, during 2011-2016, from the three busiest international commercial airports in Brazil: Guarulhos, Brasília, and Galeão. A …

How Low-Cost Carriers Are Changing The Growing East Asian Travel Market, Connor Slocum Jan 2018

How Low-Cost Carriers Are Changing The Growing East Asian Travel Market, Connor Slocum

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The Asian air travel market is currently one of the fastest growing in the world. The gross domestic travel percentage grew 4% year over year in 2014, with China, India, and Indonesia each growing over 10%. With a continually expanding middle class, India and China are expected to have the highest growth rate potential, due to the high investment in infrastructure and loosening travel restrictions (Rauch, 2015). The Asian air travel market has high potential due to many policy changes, robust economic growth, and rising incomes. As the world’s most populous continent, the Asian sector remains a big player in …

Lost In Translation? Non-Stem Academics In The 'Entrepreneurial' University, Derek Dodd Jan 2018

Lost In Translation? Non-Stem Academics In The 'Entrepreneurial' University, Derek Dodd

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This study set out to explore the ways in which non-STEM academics, working within UK universities that had positioned themselves publicly as ‘entrepreneurial’ institutions, interpret and negotiate the related concepts of the entrepreneurial academic and university. The entrepreneurial university concept has become a ubiquitous theme in higher education and policy literatures in recent decades, having been described variously as an ‘idea for its time’ (Shattock, 2010) and the ‘end-point of the evolution of the idea of the university’ (Barnett, 2010, p.i). This research set out to interrogate some of the key ways in which this institutional form, and the corresponding …

A Comparison Of English And Turkish Early Years/Kindergarten Teachers’ Understandings Of And Practices In Outdoor Activities, Mehmet Mart Jan 2018

A Comparison Of English And Turkish Early Years/Kindergarten Teachers’ Understandings Of And Practices In Outdoor Activities, Mehmet Mart

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

My thesis presents a comparison of English and Turkish Early Years/Kindergarten teachers’ understandings and practices of outdoor activities. Comparative research provides a wider understanding of the two different cultures’ current circumstances in outdoor activities. Such research provides in-depth understanding of educational aspects in different cultures, and produces enhancement opportunities for educational pedagogies (Alexander, 2001). I had been conscious of possible differences in cultural perception of childhood and its temporal effects on historical developments as well as on the way children play and engage in outdoor activities and this informed my approach. This thesis was based on ethnographic research involving two …

This study addresses a gap in the literature, identifying wellbeing differences between different types of educational environment and SEN provisions. It explores whether there are benefits from inclusive education to student wellbeing, considering constructs of wellbeing relevant to the impact of SpLDs, synthesising pedagogic, psychotherapeutic and developmental perspectives. 74 student participants were recruited through the SEN departments of 4 UK schools - each with differing approaches to SEN support. Student participants completed two psychometric wellbeing questionnaires. They also engaged in photographic exercise, capturing …

The Impact Of Arts Education Programmes On Anti-Racist School Practice In The South West Of England, Heather Knight Jan 2018

The Impact Of Arts Education Programmes On Anti-Racist School Practice In The South West Of England, Heather Knight

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

In predominantly White schools, a common belief exists that anti-racist education is unnecessary, despite a rise in the number of people who admit to being racially prejudiced. A colour-blind approach, which silences issues of race, tends to dominate in schools, while, fear of ‘getting it wrong’ prevents meaningful dialogue. My thesis addresses the question, in what ways do arts programmes support anti-racist education in predominantly White areas? This includes two threads. Firstly, I take a critical race theory approach, drawing on Whiteness studies, to explore White teachers' and school students’ assumptions about racism and education. Secondly, using a critical pedagogy …

From The Secret Garden To The Panopticon? Changing Freedoms And The Growing Crisis In Primary School Headteacher Recruitment., Paul Hodson Jan 2018

From The Secret Garden To The Panopticon? Changing Freedoms And The Growing Crisis In Primary School Headteacher Recruitment., Paul Hodson

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

A headteacher recruitment crisis continues in the primary education sector (Howson & Sprigate, 2011; Rhodes et al., 2008). This research offers a voice for an increasingly marginalised group and synthesises the experiences of 15 primary headteachers, including retired, experienced and new school leaders against the changing educational scenery of four decades. An extended metaphor describing a changing epistemological landscape is utilised (Pascale, 2011), including dramaturgical discourse (Goffman, 1974). The research assesses whether the lived experiences of school leaders evidence a supposed movement away from the ‘freedom’ of the ‘secret garden’ of the pre-National Curriculum era to a time of reducing …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Although the Southern Ocean is thought to account for a significant portion of the contemporary oceanic uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2), flux estimates in this region are based on sparse observations that are strongly biased toward summer. Here we present new estimates of Southern Ocean air-sea CO2 fluxes calculated with measurements from biogeochemical profiling floats deployed by the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling project during 2014–2017. Compared to ship-based CO2 flux estimates, the float-based fluxes find significantly stronger outgassing in the zone around Antarctica where carbon-rich deep waters upwell to the surface ocean. …

A Critical Examination Of The Police Use Of Tasers, Jodie Nash Jan 2018

A Critical Examination Of The Police Use Of Tasers, Jodie Nash

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This study explored the police use of Tasers and how this has an impact on matters such as public confidence, governance, welfare of officers and holding the police accountable. This topic was chosen due to the lack of academic coverage that it has received and its need to be further developed for the purpose of creating more understanding around the matter. It was also chosen as a result of recent and ongoing speculation on the issue and due to its current relevance seen because of recent incidents that may either support or contradict a more elevated use of Tasers by …

The Demise Of The Traditional Jury And Jury Impartiality With Particular Focus On Media Intrusion, Jessica Clarke

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

In a world where 24 hour news and social media are ingrained into people's everyday lives it can be difficult to uphold traditional values and practice. This is particularly pertinent in respect of the impact of such factors on the fundamental system of trial by jury and its impartiality. This article examines the issue of mass media and its influence and impact on jury decisions.

Tearing Up The Patchwork Quilt: An Examination Of How, Why And When Liability For Psychiatric Injury In The Tort Of Negligence, Jordan Owen Jan 2018

Tearing Up The Patchwork Quilt: An Examination Of How, Why And When Liability For Psychiatric Injury In The Tort Of Negligence, Jordan Owen

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This paper grapples with the question of whether the law of psychiatric injury remains fit for purpose in the twenty-first century. Through analysing the historical development of this area of law an attempt is made to understand how it has come to be degradingly described as a patchwork quilt of distinctions. Once the history has been set out an attempt is made to learn from whatever historical mistakes there may have been and devise a way forward whereby the mistakes of the past can be avoided and a return to clarity can be achieved.

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Interventions training parents of at-risk children have received considerable empirical support but their effectiveness is undermined by low attendance rates. This research sought to clarify why parents, even with the best of intentions, fail to follow through to full participation in workshop programs; and to provide insight into ways to improve parental engagement. We examined participation in Parents as Partners, a school-based, early childhood intervention. Demographic and ongoing educational, social, emotional and behavioural data for 136 parent-child dyads were gathered from parents, teachers and children. Mitigation of a wide range of factors previously identified as barriers to attendance was also …

The elements of the programme that contributed to its efficacy are also described. The programme was designed using a four-step approach and was based on the constructs of a theoretical framework (the COM-B model). Feedback from …

The Decline Of Free Speech On The Postmodern Campus: The Troubling Evolution Of The Heckler's Veto, Kenneth Lasson Jan 2018

The Decline Of Free Speech On The Postmodern Campus: The Troubling Evolution Of The Heckler's Veto, Kenneth Lasson

All Faculty Scholarship

The Twenty-First Century has presented new challenges to the traditional ways that free speech in America has been encouraged and protected. While the right to express one’s opinions has become increasingly problematic in society at large, it is particularly imperiled in the very places that pride themselves as being open marketplaces of ideas – on college and university campuses.
Today we’re faced with numerous campus speech codes that substantially limit First-Amendment rights. They are ubiquitous and often cavalierly invoked. For civil libertarians the good news is that not one of the few such codes that have been tested in court …

Global Education: Assets And Challenges For Global Competency In Catholic Schools, Beate Winkler Nguyen Jan 2018

Global Education: Assets And Challenges For Global Competency In Catholic Schools, Beate Winkler Nguyen

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Global education for global competency in Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is neither defined nor aligned as a priority for its 21st-century learners. Various schools within the Department of Catholic Schools address global competency through world languages, dual-language immersion, activities, or programs, but no specific global education focus permeates the entire district. The relevance of global competency for nearly 80,000 students from Early Childhood (EC) programs/PreK–12th grade (high school) Catholic schools in Los Angeles is not just a curricular necessity or spiritual aspiration, it is, at its core, a question of social justice, particularly for students of …

The Role Of Counterfactual Thinking In Deceptive Communication, Raluca Andra Briazu Jan 2018

The Role Of Counterfactual Thinking In Deceptive Communication, Raluca Andra Briazu

Other Faculty of Health Theses

This thesis explores the proposal that there is a close link between counterfactual thinking and lying. Although both require the imagination of alternatives to reality, research has yet to establish a direct link. In the first seven studies the relationship between counterfactuals and lies is directly investigated using novel scenario-based and behavioural tasks. In a further four studies we also investigate the role of affect and executive functions as explanatory mechanisms. Results show that individuals with a tendency to think counterfactually are more likely to generate potential lies and to be more successful when lying in front of others (Study …

Dentists’ Perceptions Of Their Professional Roles In The Context Of Referral Decisions In Primary Dental Care In England, Zoe Elizabeth Allen

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Background Within Primary Dental Care (PDC), there is variation in dentists’ views about who should be treated in general dental practices and who should be referred to community dental services (CDSs), creating confusion about where patients can access dental care. Aims This research aimed to explore the meanings which general dental practitioners (GDPs) and community dentists in England ascribe to their roles. It focused on why they make, accept or decline patient referrals within PDC. Methods I conducted a configurative systematic review of literature about referrals within PDC in the UK. Data were synthesised using Critical Interpretive Synthesis. I interviewed …

Transitioning From Homelessness Into A Sustained Tenancy: What Enables Successful Tenancy Sustainment? (The Moving On Project), Leonie Boland Jan 2018

Transitioning From Homelessness Into A Sustained Tenancy: What Enables Successful Tenancy Sustainment? (The Moving On Project), Leonie Boland

Other Faculty of Health Theses

For individuals with multiple and complex needs, leaving homelessness is recognised as a dynamic and complex process. Furthermore, despite the provision of supports, tenancies may not be maintained and individuals return to using homelessness services. Tenancy sustainment—the maintenance of a tenancy to avoid a premature end of tenure—is fundamental to the resolution and prevention of homelessness. There is a paucity of research about the occupations of individuals as they establish and maintain tenancies. This thesis aimed to understand the transition process from homelessness, and tenancy sustainment, from an occupational perspective, to inform a potential occupational therapy intervention. Underpinned by the …

Computational Modelling Of Human Aesthetic Preferences In The Visual Domain: A Brain-Inspired Approach, François Lemarchand Jan 2018

Computational Modelling Of Human Aesthetic Preferences In The Visual Domain: A Brain-Inspired Approach, François Lemarchand

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Following the rise of neuroaesthetics as a research domain, computational aesthetics has also known a regain in popularity over the past decade with many works using novel computer vision and machine learning techniques to evaluate the aesthetic value of visual information. This thesis presents a new approach where low-level features inspired from the human visual system are extracted from images to train a machine learning-based system to classify visual information depending on its aesthetics, regardless of the type of visual media. Extensive tests are developed to highlight strengths and weaknesses of such low-level features while establishing good practices in the …

The Role Of Lysophosphatidylcholine Acyltransferase-2 (Lpcat-2) In Inflammatory Responses, Hanaa Alrammah

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Sepsis is the overwhelming inflammatory response to infection, especially bacterial infection and associated bacterial products. It has major healthcare impacts, affecting an estimated 19-30 million persons/year worldwide with a mortality of 30-70%. Despite intense research, no specific therapy has been established for sepsis and in addition to the high mortality, the associated economic costs are very high. For example, recent data shows that the annual cost of patients with sepsis is more than $20 billion in the USA, and £2.5 billion in the UK. Therefore, novel targets and new therapies for sepsis are required which will have an important impact …

What’S In A Frame? Cosmopolitan Morality, The Media And Interventionism, Nicola Katy Langdon Jan 2018

What’S In A Frame? Cosmopolitan Morality, The Media And Interventionism, Nicola Katy Langdon

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis examines the media-foreign policy nexus through a specific focus on the moral framing of conflict and interventionism within British media and policy discourses. While morality has been identified as a frequently used frame through which we may understand issues, there has been little extant discussion of the nature of morality embedded within media texts, or how it may shape understanding and policy-making. This research contributes to this void through forwarding cosmopolitan morality framing as a new theoretical framework. Consideration is given to how appeals to a cosmopolitan moral consciousness can resonate and build support for or legitimise particular …
