The Lands’ End Content Marketing Debacle: A Cautionary Tale Of A Retailer’S Inadvertent Foray Into Polarized Politics, Nathan Gilkerson

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

In February 2016, the clothing retailer Lands’ End found itself at the center of a public relations crisis linked to its decision to feature an interview with women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem on the company’s website and in its catalog. As part of a new “Legends Series” of interviews, the profile described Steinem as “The woman who paved the way.” Although the piece didn’t directly reference Steinem’s support for abortion rights, many customers took to social media to express anger at Lands’ End for choosing to feature Steinem. Facebook and Twitter posts accused Lands’ End of glorifying “a pro-abortion feminist” …

Reproductive Differences Between Three Species Of Brachyrhaphis Livebearing Fishes In Panamá, Bruce Stallsmith Nov 2018

Reproductive Differences Between Three Species Of Brachyrhaphis Livebearing Fishes In Panamá, Bruce Stallsmith

Neotropical Biodiversity

Both theory and the published literature support the importance of demographic selection for differences in life history traits between populations as well as between related species. Much attention in this area has been paid to species in the livebearing fish family Poeciliidae. I studied populations of three species of poeciliid fishes of the genus Brachyrhaphis (episcopi, roswithae, terrabensis) found from low to high elevation in western and central Panamá for reproductive life history phenotypes. To determine how reproductive life history phenotypic characters subject to both selection and environmental influence may vary between these species, field collections were made at the …

Neotropical Biodiversity

We performed a systematic review of the genus Anadia in Ecuador to delimit species based on several lines of evidence: external morphology, hemipenes, coloration, DNA sequences and geographical distribution. We describe a new species, Anadia buenaventura sp. nov., which is distinguished from other species of Anadia by presenting a pattern of coloration with light dorsolateral bands and paravertebral rows of dark spots, as well as fewer scales around the body. We also present new data on the distribution of Anadia petersi Oftedal and a molecular phylogeny that suggests that Anadia rhombifera (Günther) is a complex of species that requires further …

The Ad Hoc Federal Crime Of Terrorism: Why Congress Needs To Amend The Statute To Adequately Address Domestic Extremism, Nathan Carpenter

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that Congress should add such crimes to the list specified in the federal crime of terrorism statute and amend the statute’s intent requirement. This will allow the Department of Justice to more adequately use its resources to address the growing prevalence of hate groups, increase investigatory capabilities, and emphasize the threat posed by such groups. Part I explores the current federal crime of terrorism and analyzes how various terrorism-related cases are adjudicated. Part II introduces the prevailing threat of political extremists operating within the United States and shows that they should no longer be placed in …

Business And Commercial Litigation In Federal Courts (4th Ed.) Edited By Robert L. Haig, James M. Wicks

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Four years ago, I reviewed Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts (3d ed.), concluding then that notwithstanding the dwindling “brick-and-mortar,” traditional law libraries, this multi-volume treatise is a worthy tool in the arsenal of the business litigator. Well, now nineteen years after its inception, the treatise, Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts (4th ed.) (“BCL”), is in its Fourth Edition, having added twenty-five new chapters leading to three more volumes. Is it still worth the shelf space? Unquestionably, this landmark treatise remains an essential guide for commercial litigators and in-house counsel alike. The addition of the new …

Resolving The Conflict Between The Temporarily Unavailable Juror And New York's Mandatory 24-Hour Limit On The Separation Of Jurors During Deliberations, Michael Pasinkoff Nov 2018

Resolving The Conflict Between The Temporarily Unavailable Juror And New York's Mandatory 24-Hour Limit On The Separation Of Jurors During Deliberations, Michael Pasinkoff

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Allowing defendants to move for and obtain mistrials based upon a delay in resuming jury deliberations does nothing to render the process fairer or to protect any right of a defendant. Granting these applications in the absence of prejudice to a defendant wastes scarce and valuable judicial resources, requires the state to unnecessarily retry a case, and makes witnesses again take time from their lives to testify in court. Indeed, in many cases, a defendant is afforded a tactical advantage by forcing the state to retry the case. There are of course occasions when the law accepts conferring a …

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof. Nov 2018

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The development of web search engines has provided an alternative for undergraduates to access the needed information for their research activities without utilising library resources, especially reference sources. This avenue created by web search engines is viewed by some as detrimental, as undergraduates now display apathy towards the use of reference sources, even though web search engines have their own limitations. Based on this, the main objective of this study was therefore to examine undergraduates’ preference between web search engines and reference sources for research activities. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the study population consisted of …
