The Anchor, Volume 132.12: December 5, 2018, Hope College

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Synthesis, Characterization And Enhanced Electrochemical Performance Of Amide-Based Metal Complexes As Electrocatalysts In Energy Devices And Non-Enzymatic Sensor, Charlette Parnell

Theses and Dissertations

The use of metal catalysts supported on the carbon nanomaterials as electrocatalysts has propelled the development of modified electrodes for electrochemical studies. They have been shown to increase sensitivity and electrical conductivity making them advantageous in applications for fuel cells, sensors and supercapacitors. In this dissertation, the synthesis and characterization of metal catalysts supported on carbon nanomaterials will be discussed and their electrochemical activity towards fuel cells, sensor and supercapacitor studies will be explored. Due to the great need for energy efficient and environmentally benign energy devices that can replace the use of fossil fuels in energy production, fuel cells …

Becoming Your Brand, Blake Kuzma

Honors Theses

As many young professionals now, starting a career is a very important and scary time. We are taught more and more how important it is that you present yourself in a way that is marketable to employers not only in person, but online as well. As a survey done by Jobvite in 2015, “75% of HR departments are required to search job applicants online” and also that “75% of HR professionals have rejected candidates based on information they have found online.” (Jobvite, 2015).

But beyond the advice we receive from our parents and mentors, there is very little that is …

Zombie Culture In Past And Modern Mythologies, Lehua Johnson Dec 2018

Zombie Culture In Past And Modern Mythologies, Lehua Johnson

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

In modern media the notion of a zombie brings to mind the images of rotting flesh, a desire for flesh, and surviving in a desolate post-apocalyptic world. While zombies have certainly evolved into a niche genre separate from horror and science fiction, it is imperative that the origins of this modern-day phenomenon are explored and analyzed in an academic context. From the empty threats of the goddess Ishtar in ancient Mesopotamia to urban legends of former Haitian slaves, the foundation of zombie culture provides strong insight to humanity’s fear of losing itself to mere corporeal forms. Zombie culture is the …

Light Eaters: A Study On The Affect Of Light Depicted Through Different Art Mediums, Samuel Dyck Dec 2018

Light Eaters: A Study On The Affect Of Light Depicted Through Different Art Mediums, Samuel Dyck

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Humankind has spent its entire history defining and creating the things that make up our physical world. Everyday, humanity continues to discover and create, furthering society’s knowledge and understanding of existence. However, there are facets of nature that have never been entirely understood by mankind, because they have a unique affect on each individual. It is known how a tree manifests and grows but no one can explain the feeling of relief that comes in the shade of a long limbed oak on a cloudless day. Nature is unique in its simplicity and mystery. Artists often use aspects of nature …

Loki: God Of Mischief, Tori Blas Dec 2018

Loki: God Of Mischief, Tori Blas

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Loki is commonly recognized as one of the many characters inhabiting the cinematic universe of Marvel. There, he is the son of Odin, brother of Thor, and the god of mischief. In the original context of Norse mythology, all but one of those descriptors are incorrect. Besides being an antagonist that often opposes Thor in the Marvel franchise, he has significance in Norse mythology from being the only god living in Asgard despite descending from giants of Jotunheim to his role in the end of Asgard and the world, better known as Ragnarok. He is seen as a god despite …

Fringe Groups And Their Beliefs In Conspiracies, Gianluca Allesina Dec 2018

Fringe Groups And Their Beliefs In Conspiracies, Gianluca Allesina

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

My topic centers around the series of questions asked in the Chapman University Survey of American Fears on conspiracy theories and the degree to which Americans believe in them. The claims of such theories can range from strange, but ultimately harmless, such as the belief that the United States faked the Apollo 11 Moon Landing in 1969, to accusations with much serious implications such as the belief that the government is hiding information on the Las Vegas and/or Sandy Hook mass shootings. The latter recently made news with the biggest advocate of the “false flag shootings” belief, none other than …

Differences Within Eudaimonic Media: Exploring How Meaningful And Inspirational Content Elicit Emotions, Ashley Ima Dec 2018

Differences Within Eudaimonic Media: Exploring How Meaningful And Inspirational Content Elicit Emotions, Ashley Ima

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Previous research on mainstream media has discriminated hedonic (i.e., funny, lighthearted) from eudaimonic (i.e., meaningful, elevating) media. Recently, researchers theoretically discriminated eudaimonic media (Oliver et al., 2018) into inspirational and meaningful media, but empirical research on this differentiation has only started. This exploratory study attempted to differentiate the emotions elicited by meaningful or inspiring movie clips. Moreover, the study explored the role of movie endings versus trailer clips as a way to test stimulus material effectiveness for future studies. An online quasi experiment was conducted in which participants (N = 109; 82.6% female, 19.12 years, 72.5% white ethnic majority) viewed …

The Emergence Of Democrats Voting Republican, Fears About Race, And A Breaking Point For The Working Class: A Look At The 2016 Presidential Election And Donald Trump’S Historic Win, Madison Demaris

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The 2016 Presidential election shocked everyone, including the candidates, with the results directly refuting most of the widely accepted surveys and polls. What fears, demographics and ideas changed in the election to make it a historic defeat for the democratic party? Why exactly did Trump win and why was it such a surprise? I examine and compare the results from 2012 and 2016 of the American National Election Study and the Chapman Survey of American Fears to discuss what has changed in the minds of Americans. In the continually polarized media, I have seen theory after theory about what exactly …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vegetable oils are currently used for biodegradable and renewable base stocks for quenchant formulation. However, there are relatively few references relating to their true equivalency, or lack thereof, comparative to the quenching performance of petroleum oil-based quenchant formulations. To obtain an overview of the variability vegetable oil quenching performance, the cooling curves and rewetting properties were determined, and the surface heat flux properties were calculated. The vegetable oils that were studied included canola, coconut, corn, cottonseed, palm, peanut, soybean, and sunflower oils. Cooling curves were obtained using the Tensi multiple-surface thermocouple 15 mm diameter by 45 mm cylindrical Inconel 600 …

Coarctation Of Aorta In Children., Arpan R. Doshi, Sathish Chikkabyrappa

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Coarctation of aorta (CoA) is a discrete narrowing in aorta causing obstruction to the flow of blood. It accounts for 6-8% of all congenital heart diseases. With advances in fetal echocardiography rate of prenatal diagnosis of coarctation of aorta has improved but it still remains a challenging diagnosis to make prenatally. Transthoracic echocardiography is mainstay of making initial diagnosis and routine follow-up. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are great advanced imaging tools for two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging of aortic arch in complex cases. Based on type of coarctation, size of patient, severity of lesion, and associated …

Using Deep Learning To Forecast Spatiotemporal Crime Patterns, Shuzhan Fan Dec 2018

Using Deep Learning To Forecast Spatiotemporal Crime Patterns, Shuzhan Fan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The distributional patterns of crime occurrences are closely related to their spatial, temporal, and environmental contexts. It has been a hot topic for researchers and crime analysts to discover such complex relationships in order to forecast crime, both spatially and temporally. Many factors play a role in the occurrences of crimes. Conventional crime forecasting research has primarily relied on historical crime records and socioeconomic data, while ignoring the rich social media and other environmental context data. The large volume of data requires a more appropriate forecasting framework with the ability to take in massive multimodal data and possibly achieve better …

Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon Dec 2018

Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

Intergenerational (IG) learning has the potential to reinforce ageist ideas, through the culturally produced binary of old and young which often describes IG learning. This research with older artists revealed implicit age bias associated with a modernist tradition in art education which minimized the value of art production viewed as feminine. Language associated with ageism shares the descriptors of the feminine and seep into our perceptions. Cooperative action research with multi-age participants facilitated personal growth and through critical reflection, implicit ageism revealed in the researcher’s prior perspective is revealed.

Intergenerational Narratives: The Personal Is Professional, Jodi Kushins, Amy B. Snider Dec 2018

Intergenerational Narratives: The Personal Is Professional, Jodi Kushins, Amy B. Snider

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

What began as a teacher-student relationship between educators Amy Brook Snider and Jodi Kushins has developed into a friendship and working partnership. At first, they did not consider their continuing long-distance connection as intergenerational. They shared experiences and exchanged ideas oblivious to the great difference in their ages. But as online tools, research, and communication emerged as a central focus of Jodi’s life and teaching, they became aware that this development might lead to an intergenerational digital divide between them. In order to explore their different responses to what has been called screen culture, they brought back their puppet alter …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The importance of records appraisal in the public healthcare sector is worth prioritising during healthcare business planning. If records are not properly appraised may lead to storage congestion, which lead to untidy filing that results in misfiling or no filing at all, resulting in retrieval difficulties or impossible retrieval during healthcare service delivery. In the healthcare institutions, that may lead to patients receiving poor service or no service at all. This study sought to investigate and recommend a framework for medical records appraisal to eventual disposal as a means to ensure support to effective healthcare service delivery in the public …
