Advertising In A World Full Of Human Trafficking: How Advertising And Human Trafficking Coincide, April M. Cherry

Honors Theses

As a young woman, I have been groomed to worry about the consequences of what I wear, what I say, and how I interact with men. My grandma is constantly sending me emails with new information on sexual assault or kidnapping cases around the area in which I live. I see articles about human trafficking schemes on my news feed almost weekly. As a young woman, I am conditioned to be on guard at all times because the dangers of being abducted or attacked, specifically trafficked, are portrayed to be more likely than they truly are. Why is this? Why …

Sense - Recommendation System Based On Affective Interpretations Of Social Media Posts: A Proposed User Interface Design, Zheng Zhang

Theses

It is now easier and cheaper for people to get involved in technology, and most people are obtaining or receiving tons of information nowadays, such as recommendations. Different recommendations are filled with our devices like smartphones, tablets or even wearable devices. However, most searches and recommendation systems fail to take into consideration the emotional context related to a user’s input and action, and as a consequence, people can hardly receive personalized, emotion-related, user-based recommendations. Though people are given various choices about lives based on searches and saved data, those recommendations can hardly improve the stress and difficulties of accomplishing daily …

Cell Culture Media Optimization, Chase Gabbitas, Chase Paterson, Austin Simmons Dec 2018

Cell Culture Media Optimization, Chase Gabbitas, Chase Paterson, Austin Simmons

Biological Engineering

Cell culture is a booming industry, producing high demand products such as therapeutic drugs, vaccines, and stem cells1. As a leader in the cell culturing industry, GE frequently runs trials to develop the best feeding conditions for various lines of cells. Historically this has been a long and tedious process. In this project we sought to test and refine a faster process of media feed optimization by using 96 deep well plates and automated equipment. A line of immunoglobulin G (IgG) producing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells were used for this trial.

Stirred, Not Shaken—Considerations For Improved Mammalian Cell Culture Scale-Up, Joshua Daniel, Zachary Ellsworth, Makali Lunt

Biological Engineering

GE Healthcare specializes in providing optimized medium for companies culturing cells in bioreactors for pharmaceutical purposes. Small scale testing, typically in shaker flasks, is a crucial part of this process, but scaling between these and larger impeller driven reactors has proven difficult in the past.

This study sought to develop a relationship between shaker flask bioreactors and a micro-bioreactor setup called the ambr® system. Important scale-up parameters such as oxygen transfer rate, 𝑘L𝑎, and energy dissipation rate, 𝜀𝑎, were calculated and used to compare the two systems. The following equations were taken from literature [2],[3]:

Tertiary Ammonia Treatment Of Lagoon Effluent Using Microvi MneTm Technology, Bryan Burbank, Sydney Burtenshaw, Nathan Guymon, Mike Langston, Luke Lemmon Dec 2018

Tertiary Ammonia Treatment Of Lagoon Effluent Using Microvi MneTm Technology, Bryan Burbank, Sydney Burtenshaw, Nathan Guymon, Mike Langston, Luke Lemmon

Biological Engineering

Nutrient pollution is a growing problem threatening many waterways. High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in water can cause algae to grow rapidly. This growth decreases water quality, kills aquatic life, and elevates toxin levels creating health hazards for people. Due to increases in nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, the Logan City regional wastewater treatment plant is currently updating from a lagoon system to a mechanical plant to meet future discharge limits imposed by federal, state, and local governments. The intent of our design is to add a tertiary nitrification system using Microvi MicroNiche EngineeringTM (MNETM) technology.

Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Through Mbbr Technology, Ethan Ackerman, Grant Harris, Gregory Jensen, Christopher Ruben, Stephen Sadler Dec 2018

Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Through Mbbr Technology, Ethan Ackerman, Grant Harris, Gregory Jensen, Christopher Ruben, Stephen Sadler

Biological Engineering

Wastewater treatment is an essential component to public health as it removes harmful compounds and allows for water reuse and recycle. Biological nutrient removal has entered into the public spotlight as effluent flows with high nitrogen concentrations have detrimental effects on water discharge bodies. Traditional suspended growth biological treatment methods are expensive and produce excess biomass that can reduce the efficiency of nutrient removal if not maintained. Research on the benefits of attached growth processes, namely moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) technology, presents an exciting innovation in wastewater treatment that can increase nutrient removal efficiency and reduce overall cost.

Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders

In the last several years, the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has seen significant technological advances that are both innovative and exciting. One of the main advances in technology comes in AAC applications on mainstream tablet devices like iPads. Tablet devices with AAC applications are being explored as an alternative to dedicated speech generating devices due to cost and convenience. But, before choosing between a mainstream tablet AAC device and a dedicated AAC device, there are several foundational elements of AAC to be understood. All of the AAC basics and considerations should be part of the assessment process …

Favouring One’S Own Products Or Services By Vertically Integrated Online Platforms As A Discriminatory Abuse Of A Dominant Position, Artur Szmigielski Dec 2018

Favouring One’S Own Products Or Services By Vertically Integrated Online Platforms As A Discriminatory Abuse Of A Dominant Position, Artur Szmigielski

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The practice of favouring one’s own vertically integrated services by a dominant online platform can be assessed as an independent practice of discrimination (prohibited under Article 102 paragraph 2 point c TFEU). This does not mean, however, that a dominant undertaking has an absolute obligation to treat products or services of its trading partners equally to its own offer. Such practices should be considered abusive if they create unfavourable conditions of competition and have significant anti-competitive effects. What is prohibited by a discriminatory practice does not refer to the fact of favouring one’s own services, but to a situation where …

Non-Compete Clauses As A Barrier To The Development Of Alternative Taxi Reservation Channels In The Light Of The Decision Of The Autorità Garante Della Concorrenza E Del Mercato Of 27 June 2018 (Case I801b, Taxi – Milano), Grzegorz Materna

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The article discusses a decision taken by the Italian Competition Authority that concerns vertical relations between taxi corporations and taxi drivers in Milan. According to the Authority’s decision, non-compete clauses for taxi drivers may have a foreclosing effect for entrants that use new technologies, and thereby create an alternative to incumbent radio taxi corporations. However, the Authority’s classification of the non-compete clauses resulted from the economic and market context in which they were used, and above all, from the fact that these non-compete clauses were used by taxi corporations that included almost all taxi drivers operating in Milan. In other …
