Calibration Of Mine Ventilation Network Models Using The Non-Linear Optimization Algorithm, Guang Xu, Jinxin Huang, Baisheng Nie, Duncan Chalmers, Zhuoming Yang

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective ventilation planning is vital to underground mining. To ensure stable operation of the ventilation system and to avoid airflow disorder, mine ventilation network (MVN) models have been widely used in simulating and optimizing the mine ventilation system. However, one of the challenges for MVN model simulation is that the simulated airflow distribution results do not match the measured data. To solve this problem, a simple and effective calibration method is proposed based on the non-linear optimization algorithm. The calibrated model not only makes simulated airflow distribution results in accordance with the on-site measured data, but also controls the errors …

First Search For Nontensorial Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website. Jan 2018

First Search For Nontensorial Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present results from the first directed search for nontensorial gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for tensorial (plus and cross) modes only, a generic metric theory may, in principle, predict waves with up to six different polarizations. This analysis is sensitive to continuous signals of scalar, vector, or tensor polarizations, and does not rely on any specific theory of gravity. After searching data from the first observation run of the advanced LIGO detectors for signals at twice the rotational frequency of 200 known pulsars, we find no evidence of gravitational waves of any polarization. We report the first upper …

© 2017 As oil reserves in established basins become depleted, exploration and production moves towards relatively unexploited areas, such as deep waters off the continental shelf. The Faroe-Shetland Channel (FSC, NE Atlantic) and adjacent areas have been subject to increased focus by the oil industry. In addition to extreme depths, metocean conditions in this region characterise an environment with high waves and strong winds, strong currents, complex circulation patterns, sharp density gradients, and large small- and mesoscale variability. These conditions pose operational challenges to oil spill response and question the suitability of current oil spill modelling frameworks (oil spill models …

Accurate Lattice Parameters From 2d-Periodic Images For Subsequent Bravais Lattice Type Assignments, Peter Moeck, Paul R. Destefano Jan 2018

Accurate Lattice Parameters From 2d-Periodic Images For Subsequent Bravais Lattice Type Assignments, Peter Moeck, Paul R. Destefano

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Three different algorithms, as implemented in three different computer programs, were put to the task of extracting direct space lattice parameters from four sets of synthetic images that were per design more or less periodic in two dimensions (2D). One of the test images in each set was per design free of noise and, therefore, genuinely 2D periodic so that it adhered perfectly to the constraints of a Bravais lattice type, Laue class, and plane symmetry group. Gaussian noise with a mean of zero and standard deviations of 10 and 50% of the maximal pixel intensity was added to the …

Determining Tidal Characteristics In A Restored Tidal Wetland Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles And Derived Data, Victor Thornton

Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology was used to determine tidal extent in Kimages Creek, a restored tidal wetland located in Charles City County, Virginia. A Sensefly eBee Real-Time Kinematic UAV equipped with the Sensor Optimized for Drone Applications (SODA) camera (20-megapixel RGB sensor) was flown during a single high and low tide event in Summer 2017. Collectively, over 1,300 images were captured and processed using Pix4D. Horizontal and vertical accuracy of models created using ground control points (GCP) ranged from 0.176 m to 0.363 m. The high tide elevation model was subtracted from the low tide using the ArcMap 10.5.1 …

Decoupled, Linear, And Energy Stable Finite Element Method For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy Phase Field Model, Yali Gao, Xiaoming He, Liquan Mei, Xiaofeng Yang Jan 2018

Decoupled, Linear, And Energy Stable Finite Element Method For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy Phase Field Model, Yali Gao, Xiaoming He, Liquan Mei, Xiaofeng Yang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a phase field model of the coupled two-phase free flow and two-phase porous media flow. This model consists of Cahn—Hilliard—Navier—Stokes equations in the free flow region and Cahn—Hilliard—Darcy equations in the porous media region that are coupled by seven interface conditions. The coupled system is decoupled based on the interface conditions and the solution values on the interface from the previous time step. A fully discretized scheme with finite elements for the spatial discretization is developed to solve the decoupled system. In order to deal with the difficulties arising from the …

Green Function Of The Poisson Equation: D = 2, 3, 4, Ulrich D. Jentschura, J. Sapirstein Jan 2018

Green Function Of The Poisson Equation: D = 2, 3, 4, Ulrich D. Jentschura, J. Sapirstein

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the Green function of the Poisson equation in two, three and four dimensions. The solution g of the equation ∇→2 g(x→ - x→') = δ(D) (x→ - x→') where x→ and x→' are D-dimensional position vectors, is customarily expanded into radial and angular coordinates. For the two-dimensional case (D = 2), we find a subtle interplay of the necessarily introduced scale L with the radial component of zero magnetic quantum number. For D = 3, the well-known expressions are briefly recalled; this is done in order to highlight the analogy with the four-dimensional case, where we uncover analogies …

Expeditious Green Synthesis Of Versatile Organic Compounds By Diverse Methods, Bimal K. Banik Jan 2018

Expeditious Green Synthesis Of Versatile Organic Compounds By Diverse Methods, Bimal K. Banik

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Synthesis of organic compounds requires organic solvents and reagents to promote them. Very often, toxic solvents are used for this purpose. Many organic reactions require molar proportion of reactants and reagents to accomplish the goal. Some reactions require longer reaction times and produce products without control of stereochemistry. Therefore, development of facile and effective organic reactions under environmentally friendly conditions is necessary. In this perspective, several reactions are discussed that are performed by microwave-induced reactions, catalytic procedures, in the absence of any solvents, one-pot method and in water. Important reactions are chosen to investigate the feasibility of conducting these reactions …

Versatile Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenations In Organic Synthesis, Bimal K. Banik, Khaled J. Barakat, Maghar S. Manhas Jan 2018

Versatile Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenations In Organic Synthesis, Bimal K. Banik, Khaled J. Barakat, Maghar S. Manhas

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation reactions are extremely useful in organic synthesis. We have investigated numerous reactions with ammonium formate (and other hydrogen gas donor) and 10% Pd/C successfully without using hydrogen gas. The reactions are very fast and produced products with high yields. Reduction of unsaturated groups, hydrogenolysis, reductive bond cleavage, allylic deacetoxylation, and dehalogenation are conducted using this method. In some instances, useful selectivity of reactions is observed. Most of the reactions are investigated with β-lactams as the substrates.

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Synthesis of amino β-lactams is a crucial objective because of the medicinal properties associated with them and the products derived from of them. Stereocontrolled synthesis of phthalimido β-lactams is performed and cis and trans-phthalimido β-lactams are deprotected with ethylene diamine (and other reagents) to amino β-lactams of diverse structures in excellent yield. This reaction is also conducted under solventless conditions to afford identical products.

Disposable Printed Lateral Flow Electrochemical Immunosensors For Human Cardiac Troponin T, Eithne Dempsey, Dhanraj Rathod Jan 2018

Disposable Printed Lateral Flow Electrochemical Immunosensors For Human Cardiac Troponin T, Eithne Dempsey, Dhanraj Rathod

Articles

Here we report an electrochemical ELISA approach for cardiac Troponin T (cTnT) determination based on a lateral flow membrane with underlying screen printed electrodes (<;100 Ω /cm 2 ). The thick film transducer was modified with the anti-cardiac Troponin T antibody via physisorption and the electrochemical performance of the immunosensor was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The capture antibody coated immunoelectrode employed for electrochemical determination of Troponin T antigen used a sandwich assay format with horseradish peroxidase conjugated signaling antibodies held in the track of a lateral flow sensor strip. A simple two step procedure realized signal acquisition within <;20 min (total assay time). The lateral flow electrochemical immunosensor response resulted in a calibration curve with linear response (0-700 ng/ml cTnT) with limit of detection of 0.15 ng/ml.

The Utility And Limits Of Canons Of Construction In Public International Law, Sean D. Murphy Jan 2018

The Utility And Limits Of Canons Of Construction In Public International Law, Sean D. Murphy

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This draft chapter, for a volume that considers canons of construction and other interpretive principles in public international law, considers the utility and limits of such canons, drawing in part upon lessons learned from schools of American jurisprudence (formalism, realism, pragmatism) with respect to statutory interpretation. In international law, there are certain obligatory canons of construction that have been expressly incorporated in Articles 31 and 32 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. These canons are essential elements of the interpretive process; while in any given context, one or the other of these elements might be favored, they …

Bifurcating Settlements, Michael B. Abramowicz, Sarah Abramowicz Jan 2018

Bifurcating Settlements, Michael B. Abramowicz, Sarah Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In settling a lawsuit, parties agree on their obligations to one another, but they need not separately address each issue, claim, or remedy that a trial court would have confronted. The legal system, however, can bifurcate the settle-ment process, requiring separate resolution of components of a settlement. Bi-furcation can protect third parties, for example, by preventing divorcing parents from trading child custody for money. In addition to identifying a wide range of contexts in which preventing trade-offs may be desirable, this Article shows that bifurcation will generally have only modest (and sometimes beneficial) effects on settlement rates.

Pythagorean Generalization Of Testing The Equality Of Two Symmetric Positive Definite Matrices, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C. B. Phillips Jan 2018

Pythagorean Generalization Of Testing The Equality Of Two Symmetric Positive Definite Matrices, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

We provide a new test for equality of two symmetric positive-definite matrices that leads to a convenient mechanism for testing specification using the information matrix equality or the sandwich asymptotic covariance matrix of the GMM estimator. The test relies on a new characterization of equality between two k dimensional symmetric positive-definite matrices A and B: the traces of AB−1 and BA−1 are equal to k if and only if A=B. Using this simple criterion, we introduce a class of omnibus test statistics for equality and examine their null and local alternative approximations under some mild regularity conditions. A preferred test …

Extremal Quantile Treatment Effects, Yichong Zhang Jan 2018

Extremal Quantile Treatment Effects, Yichong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper establishes an asymptotic theory and inference method for quantile treatment effect estimators when the quantile index is close to or equal to zero. Such quantile treatment effects are of interest in many applications, such as the effect of maternal smoking on an infant’s adverse birth outcomes. When the quantile index is close to zero, the sparsity of data jeopardizes conventional asymptotic theory and bootstrap inference. When the quantile index is zero, there are no existing inference methods directly applicable in the treatment effect context. This paper addresses both of these issues by proposing new inference methods that are …

Application Of 3d Delaunay Triangulation In Fingerprint Authentication System, Wencheng Yang, Ahmed Ibrahim, Junaid Chaudhry, Song Wang, Jiankun Hu, Craig Valli

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Biometric security has found many applications in Internet of Things (IoT) security. Many mobile devices including smart phones have supplied fingerprint authentication function. However, the authentication performance in such restricted environment has been downgraded significantly. A number of methods based on Delaunay triangulation have been proposed for minutiae-based fingerprint matching, due to some favorable properties of the Delaunay triangulation under image distortion. However, all existing methods are based on 2D pattern, of which each unit, a Delaunay triangle, can only provide limited discrimination ability and could cause low matching performance. In this paper, we propose a 3D Delaunay triangulation based …

Telomere Correlations During Early Life In A Long Lived Seabird, Jacob Schmidt Jan 2018

Telomere Correlations During Early Life In A Long Lived Seabird, Jacob Schmidt

Biological Sciences

Telomere dynamics in blood cells have been linked to aging in a variety of organisms. However, whether blood telomeres correlated with telomeres in other parts of the body is not well known, especially during early life when telomere loss is expected to be most rapid. We investigated this question in embryonic and juvenile Franklin’s gulls (Leucophaeus pipixcan). We measured telomere lengths in blood, heart, liver and skeletal muscle tissues at the end of embryonic (n = 31) and post-natal development (n=20). In late-stage embryos, blood telomeres were significantly positively correlated with heart and skeletal muscle, but not liver telomeres. However, …

Personality And Behavioral Syndromes Of The Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus Fuscus, Amanda Marie Boyer Jan 2018

Personality And Behavioral Syndromes Of The Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus Fuscus, Amanda Marie Boyer

Biological Sciences

As the study of animal personality has significant expanded in the last decade, a growing amount of research has focused on the impacts of sociality and group dynamics on behavioral repeatability. The research presented here focused on examining personality in a captive colony of a common bat species, the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). Chapter 1 focused on calculating repeatability along common personality axes, as well as examining relationships between these axes (behavioral syndromes). High repeatabilities were observed for two behavioral axes (exploration and activity) and a significant correlation was found between these axes, confirming a common behavioral syndrome. Chapter …

We compare and contrast three different ways to implement an archival replay banner. We propose an implementation that utilizes Custom Elements and adds some unique behaviors, not common in existing archival replay systems, to enhance the user experience. Our approach has a minimal user interface footprint and resource overhead while still providing rich interactivity and extended on-demand provenance information about the archived resources.

Quantification Of Twist From The Central Lines Of Β-Strands, Tunazzina Islam, Michael Poteat, Jing He Jan 2018

Quantification Of Twist From The Central Lines Of Β-Strands, Tunazzina Islam, Michael Poteat, Jing He

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Since the discovery of right-handed twist of a β-strand, many studies have been conducted to understand the twist. Given the atomic structure of a protein, twist angles have been defined using atomic positions of the backbone. However, limited study is available to characterize twist when the atomic positions are not available, but the central lines of β-strands are. Recent studies in cryoelectron microscopy show that it is possible to predict the central lines of β-strands from a medium-resolution density map. Accurate measurement of twist angles is important in identification of β-strands from such density maps. We propose an effective method …

Efficient Randomized Algorithms For The Fixed Precision Low Rank Matrix Approximation, Wenjian Yu, Yu Gu, Yaohang Li Jan 2018

Efficient Randomized Algorithms For The Fixed Precision Low Rank Matrix Approximation, Wenjian Yu, Yu Gu, Yaohang Li

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Randomized algorithms for low-rank matrix approximation are investigated, with the emphasis on the fixed-precision problem and computational efficiency for handling large matrices. The algorithms are based on the so-called QB factorization, where Q is an orthonormal matrix. First, a mechanism for calculating the approximation error in the Frobenius norm is proposed, which enables efficient adaptive rank determination for a large and/or sparse matrix. It can be combined with any QB-form factorization algorithm in which B's rows are incrementally generated. Based on the blocked randQB algorithm by Martinsson and Voronin, this results in an algorithm called randQB_EI. Then, we further revise …
