Cost-Sensitive Deep Neural Network Ensemble For Class Imbalance Problem, Kruy Seng Jan 2018

Cost-Sensitive Deep Neural Network Ensemble For Class Imbalance Problem, Kruy Seng

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In data mining, classification is a task to build a model which classifies data into a given set of categories. Most classification algorithms assume the class distribution of data to be roughly balanced. In real-life applications such as direct marketing, fraud detection and churn prediction, class imbalance problem usually occurs. Class imbalance problem is referred to the issue that the number of examples belonging to a class is significantly greater than those of the others. When training a standard classifier with class imbalance data, the classifier is usually biased toward majority class. However, minority class is the class of interest …

Articles

An air measurement campaign was carried out at a green-waste composting site in the South of Ireland during Spring 2016. The aim was to quantify and identify the levels of Primary Biological Aerosol Particles (PBAP) that were present using the traditional off-line, impaction/optical microscopy method alongside an on-line, spectroscopic approach termed WIBS (Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor), which can provide number concentrations, sizes and “shapes” of airborne PBAP in real-time by use of Light Induced Fluorescence (LIF). The results from the two techniques were compared in order to validate the use of the spectroscopic method for determining the releases of the …

Latent Structure Of The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test In Psychiatrically Hospitalized Youth, Jane S. Studeny

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The aims of this study were to explore the latent factor structure of WCST performance in psychiatrically hospitalized youth, and to investigate associations between latent factors and various psychiatric, psychological, and neuropsychological variables. The results revealed a three-factor solution that is broadly attributed to executive abilities of problem solving, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control. The resulting three-factor solution accounted for 96% of the variance in the present study’s sample, and was comparable to results from similar studies in adult populations. Latent factors were associated with performance on a brief test of intelligence as well as to several measures of executive …

High People-High Mission: The Power Of Caring Leadership As Experienced In The Air Force, Winfield F. Tufts Jan 2018

High People-High Mission: The Power Of Caring Leadership As Experienced In The Air Force, Winfield F. Tufts

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

On the surface, caring and the military appear to be opposites. The stereotypical image of the military giving and obeying orders does not conjure up images of leaders caring for their subordinates. In reality, caring for subordinates and caring for the mission could help leaders form stronger relationships with subordinates, because subordinates may have confidence that their leaders will not recklessly send them into harm’s way. Subordinates may develop confidence in their leaders based on their leaders’ care during non-combat environments. Yet, empirical studies of caring in the military are sparse. This study investigates how Air Force retirees characterize “great …

Aerial applications of liquid methoprene are used in salt marshes to control mosquitoes by preventing adult emergence. Despite concern about toxicity to non-target organisms, little is known about environmental concentrations after applications, nor methoprene's persistence in salt marsh environments. Aqueous and sediment samples were collected from two marshes receiving weekly applications. Aqueous samples were collected as early as 30 minutes after applications and as long as nine days afterwards; sediment samples were taken within hours of application and as long as 19 days post-application. Use of time-of-flight liquid chromatography – mass spectral analysis allowed for ultra low detection limits (0.5 …

Understanding Nitrogen Uptake In The Rhizosphere Of A Mycorrhizal Fungus And Plant System, Tiffany Whitney Victor Jan 2018

Understanding Nitrogen Uptake In The Rhizosphere Of A Mycorrhizal Fungus And Plant System, Tiffany Whitney Victor

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The mechanistic links between plants and growth promoting micro-organisms in an eco-system involved in the production of biomass are currently very poorly understood. Observing the nutrient changes in the rhizosphere is a key step to understanding the molecular dynamics involved in these symbiotic interactions and nutrient pathways that facilitate plant growth. To study such a nutrient flow, a new application of Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging (FTIRI) was developed that entailed growing Populus tremuloides seedlings on a thin, nutrient-enriched Phytagel matrix that allows pixel to pixel measurement of the distribution of nutrients, in particular, nitrate and ammonium and sucrose added as …

The Effectiveness Of Intrusive Advising Programs On Academic Achievement And Retention In Higher Education, Caroline Mulhall Reader Jan 2018

The Effectiveness Of Intrusive Advising Programs On Academic Achievement And Retention In Higher Education, Caroline Mulhall Reader

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Academic advising in higher Education has been affected by many factors since its development at Harvard College in 1636 (Brubacher & Rudy, 1997). Currently in higher Education, 33% of first year students do not return for their second year of academic work (U.S. News and World Report, 2015); only 60% of students graduate college within a six-year period (Porter, 1990). As universities place emphasis on increasing retention and graduation rates, academic advising has developed into a new form of advising, intrusive advising. Intrusive advising aims to give support to students in order for them to become more prepared and capable …

Application Of The Taguchi Approach To Optimize Zno Synthesis Via Hydrothermally Assisted Sol-Gel Method, Zahra Khaghanpour, Sanaz Naghibi

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

ZnO powder was synthesized via a hydrothermally assisted sol-gel method. Synthesis variables including Zn-precursor type, pH value, time, and temperature of hydrothermal treatment were analyzed using the Taguchi approach. The experimental procedures were defined based on the L9 array for four variables in three levels. The influences of those variables on the response parameters, i.e. crystallite size, crystallinity, band gap energy ($E_{g})$, and degradation constants ($k)$, were evaluated. XRD results and $E_{g}$ values showed that ZnO wurtzite appeared to be the only crystalline phase in the samples. Taguchi analysis predicted that the optimized conditions to achieve the highest photoactivity are …
