Understanding And Constructing Ake Via Double-Key Key Encapsulation Mechanism, Haiyang Xue, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Bei Liang, Jingnan He Dec 2018

Understanding And Constructing Ake Via Double-Key Key Encapsulation Mechanism, Haiyang Xue, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Bei Liang, Jingnan He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Motivated by abstracting the common idea behind several implicitly authenticated key exchange (AKE) protocols, we introduce a primitive that we call double-key key encapsulation mechanism (2-key KEM). It is a special type of KEM involving two pairs of secret-public keys and satisfying some function and security property. Such 2-key KEM serves as the core building block and provides alternative approaches to simplify the constructions of AKE. To see the usefulness of 2-key KEM, we show how several existing constructions of AKE can be captured as 2-key KEM and understood in a unified framework, including widely used HMQV, NAXOS, Okamoto-AKE, and …

Active Matting, Xin Yang, Ke Xu, Shaozhe Chen, Shengfeng He, Baocai Yin, Rynson Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Image matting is an ill-posed problem. It requires a user input trimap or some strokes to obtain an alpha matte of the foreground object. A fine user input is essential to obtain a good result, which is either time consuming or suitable for experienced users who know where to place the strokes. In this paper, we explore the intrinsic relationship between the user input and the matting algorithm to address the problem of where and when the user should provide the input. Our aim is to discover the most informative sequence of regions for user input in order to produce …

Authorized Function Homomorphic Signature, Qingwen Guo, Qiong Huang, Guomin Yang Dec 2018

Authorized Function Homomorphic Signature, Qingwen Guo, Qiong Huang, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Homomorphic signature (HS) is a novel primitive that allows an agency to carry out arbitrary (polynomial time) computation f on the signed data (m) over right arrow and accordingly gain a signature sigma(h) for the computation result f ((m) over right arrow) with respect to f on behalf of the data owner (DO). However, since DO lacks control of the agency's behavior, receivers would believe that DO did authenticate the computation result even if the agency misbehaves and applies a function that the DO does not want. To address the problem above, in this paper we introduce a new primitive …

The Living Wall Display: Physical Augmentation Of Interactive Content Using An Autonomous Mobile Display, Yuki Onishi, Yoshiki Kudo, Kazuki Takashima, Anthony Tang, Yoshifumi Kitamura

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Living Wall Display displays interactive content on a mobile wall screen that moves in concert with content animation. To augment the interaction experience, the display dynamically changes its position and orientation, responding to the content animation triggered by user interactions. We implement three proof of concept prototypes that represent pseudo force impact of the interactive content using physical screen movement. Pilot studies show that the Living Wall augments content expressiveness, and increases the sense of presence of the screen content.

Vr Safari Park: A Concept-Based World Building Interface Using Blocks And World Tree, Shotaro Ichikawa, Anthony Tang, Kazuki Takashima, Yoshifumi Kitamura Dec 2018

Vr Safari Park: A Concept-Based World Building Interface Using Blocks And World Tree, Shotaro Ichikawa, Anthony Tang, Kazuki Takashima, Yoshifumi Kitamura

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a concept-based world building approach, realized in a system called VR Safari Park, which allows users to rapidly create and manipulate a world simulation. Conventional world building tools focus on the manipulation and arrangement of entities to set up the simulation, which is time consuming as it requires frequent view and entity manipulations. Our approach focuses on a far simpler mechanic, where users add virtual blocks which represent world entities (e.g. animals, terrain, weather, etc.) to a World Tree, which represents the simulation. In so doing, the World Tree provides a quick overview of the simulation, and users …

Dual-Side Privacy-Preserving Task Matching For Spatial Crowdsourcing, Jiangang Shu, Ximeng Liu, Yinghui Zhang, Xiaohua Jia, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the popularity of mobile phones and the ubiquity of wireless transmission technologies, spatial crowdsourcing (SC) has emerged as a novel approach to outsource location-based tasks to a set of workers who physically move to the designated locations to perform the tasks. To achieve the accurate task matching, both requesters and workers need to expose their locations or queries to the SC-Server, which raises security concerns. Although many protection measures have been proposed, there are some drawbacks in one-side protection, dual-server setting and user scalability when they are applied to the practical crowdsourcing environment. In this paper, we design a …

Using Smart Card Data To Model Commuters’ Responses Upon Unexpected Train Delays, Xiancai Tian, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The mass rapid transit (MRT) network is playing an increasingly important role in Singapore's transit network, thanks to its advantages of higher capacity and faster speed. Unfortunately, due to aging infrastructure, increasing demand, and other reasons like adverse weather condition, commuters in Singapore recently have been facing increasing unexpected train delays (UTDs), which has become a source of frustration for both commuters and operators. Most, if not all, existing works on delay management do not consider commuters' behavior. We dedicate this paper to the study of commuters' behavior during UTDs. We adopt a data-driven approach to analyzing the six-month' real …

Mobility-Driven Ble Transmit-Power Adaptation For Participatory Data Muling, Chung-Kyun Han, Archan Misra, Shih-Fen Cheng Dec 2018

Mobility-Driven Ble Transmit-Power Adaptation For Participatory Data Muling, Chung-Kyun Han, Archan Misra, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyzes a human-centric framework, called SmartABLE, for easy retrieval of the sensor values from pervasively deployed smart objects in a campus-like environment. In this framework, smartphones carried by campus occupants act as data mules, opportunistically retrieving data from nearby BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) equipped smart object sensors and relaying them to a backend repository. We focus specifically on dynamically varying the transmission power of the deployed BLE beacons, so as to extend their operational lifetime without sacrificing the frequency of sensor data retrieval. We propose a memetic algorithm-based power adaptation strategy that can handle deployments of thousands of …

Credit Assignment For Collective Multiagent Rl With Global Rewards, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau Dec 2018

Credit Assignment For Collective Multiagent Rl With Global Rewards, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Scaling decision theoretic planning to large multiagent systems is challenging due to uncertainty and partial observability in the environment. We focus on a multiagent planning model subclass, relevant to urban settings, where agent interactions are dependent on their collective influence'' on each other, rather than their identities. Unlike previous work, we address a general setting where system reward is not decomposable among agents. We develop collective actor-critic RL approaches for this setting, and address the problem of multiagent credit assignment, and computing low variance policy gradient estimates that result in faster convergence to high quality solutions. We also develop difference …

Towards Mining Comprehensive Android Sandboxes, Tien-Duy B. Le, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Debin Gao, Li Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Android is the most widely used mobile operating system with billions of users and devices. The popularity of Android apps have enticed malware writers to target them. Recently, Jamrozik et al. proposed an approach, named Boxmate, to mine sandboxes to protect Android users from malicious behaviors. In a nutshell, Boxmate analyzes the execution of an app, and collects a list of sensitive APIs that are invoked by that app in a monitoring phase. Then, it constructs a sandbox that can restrict accesses to sensitive APIs not called by the app. In such a way, malicious behaviors that are not observed …

A Struggle To Bridge The Gap: Promoting African American Males In Teacher Education, Vance Vaughn Nov 2018

A Struggle To Bridge The Gap: Promoting African American Males In Teacher Education, Vance Vaughn

School Leadership Review

After serving 22 years in public education as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent, I am in awe over the small number of African American males as public school teachers. My classroom teacher experience was ephemeral as I was promoted to educational administration after five and one-half years. As the only African American male teacher in a high school with over 3,600 students, hundreds of whom were African American male, I was an anomaly in that environment. African American male role models were drastically needed and sought after mainly because campus data reported African American males ranked first …

Finite Simple Graphs And Their Associated Graph Lattices, James B. Hart, Brian Frazier Nov 2018

Finite Simple Graphs And Their Associated Graph Lattices, James B. Hart, Brian Frazier

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In his 2005 dissertation, Antoine Vella explored combinatorical aspects of finite graphs utilizing a topological space whose open sets are intimately tied to the structure of the graph. In this paper, we go a step further and examine some aspects of the open set lattices induced by these topological spaces. In particular, we will characterize all lattices that constitute the opens for finite simple graphs endowed with this topology, explore the structure of these lattices, and show that these lattices contain information necessary to reconstruct the graph and its complement in several ways.

Environmental Fate And Microbial Effects Of Monensin, Lincomycin, And Sulfamethazine Residues In Soil, Matteo D'Alessio, Lisa M. Durso, Daniel N. Miller, Brian Woodbury, Chittaranjan Ray, Daniel D. Snow

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The impact of commonly-used livestock antibiotics on soil nitrogen transformations under varying redox conditions is largely unknown. Soil column incubations were conducted using three livestock antibiotics (monensin, lincomycin and sulfamethazine) to better understand the fate of the antibiotics, their effect on nitrogen transformation, and their impact on soil microbial communities under aerobic, anoxic, and denitrifying conditions. While monensin was not recovered in the effluent, lincomycin and sulfamethazine concentrations decreased slightly during transport through the columns. Sorption, and to a limited extent degradation, are likely to be the primary processes leading to antibiotic attenuation during leaching. Antibiotics also affected microbial respiration …

A Comparative Analysis Of Techniques Of Euphonium And Vocal Performance Using Acoustical Properties, Brian Logan Nov 2018

A Comparative Analysis Of Techniques Of Euphonium And Vocal Performance Using Acoustical Properties, Brian Logan

Open Access Dissertations

After researching that many brass pedagogy texts make allusions to vocal performance as the ideal standard, this essay observed the ability of the euphonium performer to create different articulation sounds. Comparisons between voice and brass articulations were made. The effectiveness was determined by comparing pertinent acoustical components of brass methods to that of a single vocalist. To begin, this study catalogued preeminent suggested techniques for performing brass articulation found in method, pedagogy, magazine, and personal memoire texts. These techniques were collected into a list and given to a euphonium player subject from the University of Miami. In an anechoic chamber, …

Haack On Legal Proof, Richard Wright Nov 2018

Haack On Legal Proof, Richard Wright

All Faculty Scholarship

In this paper I discuss Susan Haack’s illuminating discussion and constructive critique of the current confusion regarding the standards of proof employed in the law, focusing especially on mathematical probability rather than warranted belief interpretations of those standards. At the end, I question Haack’s claim that statistical evidence is relevant not only for establishing the existence of a causal process but also, although usually insufficient by itself, for proving actual causation in a specific case.

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

BACKGROUND: National- or regional-scale prediction models that estimate individual-level air pollution concentrations commonly include hundreds of geographic variables. However, these many variables may not be necessary and parsimonious approach including small numbers of variables may achieve sufficient prediction ability. This parsimonious approach can also be applied to most criteria pollutants. This approach will be powerful when generating publicly available datasets of model predictions that support research in environmental health and other fields. OBJECTIVES: We aim to (1) build annual-average integrated empirical geographic (IEG) regression models for the contiguous U.S. for six criteria pollutants, for all years with regulatory monitoring data …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

A promising anticancer therapeutic strategy is the stabilization of telomeric G-quadruplexes using G-quadruplex-binding small molecules. Although many G-quadruplex-specific ligands have been developed, their low potency and selectivity to G-quadruplexes over duplex remains unsolved. Recently, a crystal structure of a telomeric 3' quadruplex-duplex hybrid was reported and the quadruplex-duplex interface was suggested to a good target to address the issues. However, there are no high-resolution complex structures reported for G-quadruplex ligands except for a docked BSU6037. In this study, molecular dynamic (MD) binding simulations with a free ligand were used to study binding poses and dynamics of four representative ligands: telomestatin, …

Isostructural Metal-Insulator Transition In Vo2, J. W. Spinuzzi, D. A. Tenne Nov 2018

Isostructural Metal-Insulator Transition In Vo2, J. W. Spinuzzi, D. A. Tenne

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The metal-insulator transition in correlated materials is usually coupled to a symmetry-lowering structural phase transition. This coupling not only complicates the understanding of the basic mechanism of this phenomenon but also limits the speed and endurance of prospective electronic devices. Here, we design and demonstrate an isostructural, purely electronically-driven metal-insulator transition in epitaxial heterostructures of an archetypal correlated material vanadium dioxide. A combination of thin-film synthesis, structural and electrical characterizations, and theoretical modeling reveals that an interface interaction suppresses the electronic correlations without changing the crystal structure in this otherwise correlated insulator. It stabilizes a non-equilibrium metallic phase, and leads …

Comparison Of Multistage And Numerical Discretization Methods For Estimating Parameters In Nonlinear Linear Ordinary Differential Equations Models, Emad Hazim Aboudi, Wafa Jaafar Hussein Nov 2018

Comparison Of Multistage And Numerical Discretization Methods For Estimating Parameters In Nonlinear Linear Ordinary Differential Equations Models, Emad Hazim Aboudi, Wafa Jaafar Hussein

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Many of the dynamic processes in different sciences are described by models of differential equations. These models explain the change in the behavior of the studied process over time by linking the behavior of the process under study with its derivatives. These models often contain constant and time-varying parameters that vary according to the nature of the process under study in this We will estimate the constant and time-varying parameters in a sequential method in several stages. In the first stage, the state variables and their derivatives are estimated in the method of penalized splines(p- splines) . In the second …

Understanding Roles For Collaboration: Teacher And Speech-Language Pathologist, Brooke Myrick Nov 2018

Understanding Roles For Collaboration: Teacher And Speech-Language Pathologist, Brooke Myrick

Student Theses and Dissertations

This investigation sought to discover if graduating education students understood the role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and if they realized the opportunities for collaboration. This study was performed using a survey distributed to education students in their final year of study. The survey consisted of general questions about SLPs in school systems and questions about the two professions working together. The data collected revealed a positive attitude toward collaboration but an overall confusion of what SLPs do in public-school settings. These students who were set to begin their teaching careers within months of the survey did not understand the …

Unsteady Modeling On Fly Ash Deposition In Full-Scale Gas-To-Gas Heaters For Ultrasupercritical Pulverized Coal-Fired Power Plant Applications, Sandeep Aryal Nov 2018

Unsteady Modeling On Fly Ash Deposition In Full-Scale Gas-To-Gas Heaters For Ultrasupercritical Pulverized Coal-Fired Power Plant Applications, Sandeep Aryal

Student Theses and Dissertations

Ash deposition is a real concern in the pulverized coal-fired power plants because it inhibits heat transfer in heat exchangers which ultimately reduces the power plant efficiency and causes material damage to them by corrosion or erosion. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of fuel quality on ash deposition by combined effect of inertial impaction and thermophoresis, assimilating shedding factor for transient modeling in the low-temperature heat exchangers (Gas-to-Gas Heaters). Single tube method with finite cell division approach is implemented in MATLAB 2017a to solve the governing equations for predicting ash deposition rates. The Stokes based …

Microbiome Diversity Of Coastal Tidal Floodwater In Southeastern Florida, Marissa Wickes Nov 2018

Microbiome Diversity Of Coastal Tidal Floodwater In Southeastern Florida, Marissa Wickes

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Over 3.7 million people are in high risk of coastal flooding and live within 1 mile of high tide in the US alone. The Atlantic coast is one of the most vulnerable areas due to its low elevation, large population, and economic importance (Bray, et. al, 2016). Coastal municipalities in the region of Southeast Florida, such as the cities of Miami, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, etc., are at especial risk from coastal flooding related to sea level rise. The US National Climate Assessment has named Miami, Florida as the economically most vulnerable city impacted by this sea level rise …

Numerical Computation Of Traveling Wave And Standing Pulse Solutions To Fitzhugh-Nagumo Equations In 2d, Abdou Alzubaidi Nov 2018

Numerical Computation Of Traveling Wave And Standing Pulse Solutions To Fitzhugh-Nagumo Equations In 2d, Abdou Alzubaidi

Doctoral Dissertations

Algorithms are constructed to calculate standing pulse and traveling wave solu- tions for the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations in two dimensions. The algorithms are based on the application of a steepest descent method to some functionals. These algorithms are global in nature, in the sense that it does not require a good initial guess to guarantee convergence. Their numerical implementation involves construc- tion of asymptotic boundary conditions on truncated domains; asymptotic boundary conditions make the computation less expensive.

Our focus is on two special types of solutions for the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations: radially symmetric standing pulses in the whole space with Ω = …
