Proposal For Implementing The Flipped Learning Method In Dentistry English, Zumrut Cassidy
Proposal For Implementing The Flipped Learning Method In Dentistry English, Zumrut Cassidy
MA TESOL Collection
In traditional teaching, the information is given to the students in the class by the lecturer through different sources. The digestion of the information is done by the students at home. Therefore, the time that is allocated for the production and the practice of the taught subject becomes limited. Yes, "flipped learning" changes that totally. The idea behind it is schoolwork at home and homework in class. This study seeks to find out what flipped learning contributes to learning and how it deals with boosting the students' autonomy. In the flipped learning way of teaching, students are supposed to take …
Building A Curriculum For The English Language Learning Program At A New University, Michael Cassidy
Building A Curriculum For The English Language Learning Program At A New University, Michael Cassidy
MA TESOL Collection
Turkish learners entering university for the first time have high expectations that a university education will be vastly different in its approach from their previous educational experiences. The hope is that learners will learn the skills needed to become independent, lifelong learners. While this may be true in their faculties, it is often not the case for learners attending English language preparatory programs (ELPP) where the course content is often dictated by textbooks. This use of the course books illustrates Krahnke's (1987) concern that while course books are not intended to be syllabi, they often become so. Many current English …

Turkey is home to 1.2 million child refugees whom has been the most vulnerable since the beginning of the Syrian conflict, which is considered to be the worst humanitarian crisis of this century. More than 50% of school age child refugees are out of school (UNICEF, 2017) in Turkey. This paper reports one of the findings of a case study of a temporary non-formal education project (Learning Turkish)1, that focused on supporting 4-6-year-old Syrian children with Turkish language and literacy development. The purpose of the paper is to focus on the teachers’ and administrators’ experiences in learning to teach young …
Revisiting The Rural Superintendency: Rethinking Guiding Theories For Contemporary Practice, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Kathleen Budge
Revisiting The Rural Superintendency: Rethinking Guiding Theories For Contemporary Practice, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Kathleen Budge
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This conceptual article challenges researchers and practitioners to reconsider the utility of current constructs used to understand the rural school superintendency. We evaluate the rural leadership literature through two waves of scholarship: insider/outsider conceptions and place-conscious/critical place-conscious constructs. We assert critical place-conscious leadership as potentially responsive to contemporary rural realities, but we provide a number of revisions for theoretical development to increase applicability to the realities of the rural superintendency in practice in the early part of the twenty-first century.

A Systematic Review Of Professional Development Programs For Language Teachers Over Ten Years: Regional Perspectives, Halil Ibrahim Çinarbas, Rabia Hos
College of Education Faculty Publications
The concepts of what it means to be a learner and a language teacher have radically changed with the developments that caused English language to become a lingua franca around the world. In response to such radical changes, language teachers are urged to constantly reconstruct their knowledge, improve their practices, attitudes and beliefs accordingly. Professional Development (PD) programs are a way of improving language teachers’ practices. In this systematic review, the qualitative studies about PD programs in the field of foreign language teaching were reviewed according to predetermined criteria. Selected studies were analyzed using MAXQDA software. The analysis of selected …
Review Of The Bible, Mormon Scripture, And The Rhetoric Of Allusivity, By Nicholas J. Frederick, Cory Crawford
Review Of The Bible, Mormon Scripture, And The Rhetoric Of Allusivity, By Nicholas J. Frederick, Cory Crawford
Mormon Studies Review
In this monograph Nicholas Frederick tackles the directional literary relationship between canonical Mormon scripture and the King James Bible with a methodology more secure and transparent than has been applied in the past. He advances substantively the study of Latter-day Saint sacred texts by trying to get an analytical handle on what attentive readers detect easily, namely, that the rhetorical space created and occupied by Joseph Smith’s canonized writings, produced in English, is inseparable from the English of the King James Bible in ways that complicate the question of historicity and translation. For Frederick, detecting and decoding allusion in LDS …

China On The Move : Travel, Exile, And Migration In Chinese Literature And Film Of The 20th Century, Stephen Roddy, Frederik H. Green, Wei Menkus
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
During no previous century in China’s long history has society experienced more profound and far-reaching changes than during that nation’s long twentieth century. The contact with Western modernity and institutional change during the late Qing dynasty, the end of dynastic rule and the birth of the Republic, the Pacific War and the Civil War, the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan’s gradual democratization and finally the era of opening and reform in China under Deng Xiaoping 鄧小平 (1904−97) and the ensuing economic rise are only some of the key historical events that have profoundly transformed Chinese society …

Background: In precision medicine, scarcity of suitable biological data often hinders the design of an appropriate predictive model. In this regard, large scale pharmacogenomics studies, like CCLE and GDSC hold the promise to mitigate the issue. However, one cannot directly employ data from multiple sources together due to the existing distribution shift in data. One way to solve this problem is to utilize the transfer learning methodologies tailored to fit in this specific context.
Results: In this paper, we present two novel approaches for incorporating information from a secondary database for improving the prediction in a target database. The first …

On Differential Depletion Length Of Schottky Diodes With Copper-Nickel Alloy Metal Of Front Contact, Abdulkadi̇r Korkut
On Differential Depletion Length Of Schottky Diodes With Copper-Nickel Alloy Metal Of Front Contact, Abdulkadi̇r Korkut
Turkish Journal of Physics
This work was prepared in two sections; the first section describes how to alloy Schottky diodes and aims to understand how metal alloys affect the essential parameters of Schottky diodes at the metal-semiconductor interface. The second section covers the varying differential depletion length in (Cu% Ni%)/n-Si/Al binary-alloyed Schottky diodes. After collecting data, the characteristics of Schottky diodes are calculated by plotting them with an increasing percentage ratio of the first element. We see that alloyed Schottky diode characteristics significantly depend on the mass percentage ratio of the first element. Significant results are seen: first, Vbi (built-in potential) directly affects the …

Lost And Silenced In Translation: Reading Pauline Discourse On Language In 1 Cor. 14 From An Asian American Perspective, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
It is important to state from the outset that this chapter is not intended to speak for all Asian Americans, but rather a reflection grounded primarily on my personal experience as a first-generation Asian immigrant in the United States. As Jin Young Choi correctly notes, “Addressing what constitutes Asian/Asian American interpretation is an arduous task, and perhaps an impossible one because of the heterogeneity of practitioners and the fluidity of contexts” (2014, 1). I first set foot on US soil in 2009 coming to study at Claremont School of Theology from Indonesia. While I was at Claremont, I also worked …

The trouble with groundwater is that despite its critical importance to global water supplies, it frequently attracts insufficient management attention relative to more visible surface water sources, irrespective of regional climate, socioeconomic profile, and regulatory environment. To this end, the recently defined sub-discipline of "socio-hydrogeology", an extension of socio-hydrology, seeks to translate and exchange knowledge with and between non-expert end-users, in addition to involving non-expert opinion and experience in hydrogeological investigations, thus emphasising a "bottom-up" methodology. It is widely acknowledged that issues pertaining to groundwater quality, groundwater quantity, climate change, and a poor general awareness and understanding of groundwater occurrence …

The Role Of Content Modality On The Likability Of An Online Communicator, Rebecca L. Pharmer
Honors Undergraduate Theses
With the growing popularity of social media platforms like Facebook, human interaction in online environments is increasing. As a result, social perceptions of the individuals "behind the screen" has become a topic that needs to be explored. The present study explores how the media platform (specifically Facebook post versus Video) affects perceptions of an individual with a controversial opinion. Potentially, the same content in a video format may increase the likability of the presenter in contrast to reading the same opinions in Facebook posts. The present study examined the role of alignment of opinion (agree vs. disagree with presenter) and …

Understanding The Potential For A Hallyu “Backlash” In Southeast Asia: A Case Study Of Consumers In Thailand, Malaysia And Philippines, Mary Jane Ainslie, Sarah Jane Lipura, Joanne Lim
Korean Studies Department Faculty Publications
Korean cultural products (known as Hallyu) are now the dominant incarnation of East Asian culture throughout Southeast Asia and have introduced consumers to Korean industry, cosmetics, and culture. Recent work has concentrated heavily upon this region and the new dynamics Southeast Asian countries can offer to the study of inter-Asian cultural links, particularly during the political amalgamation of the ASEAN economic community. Yet in the more developed Southeast Asian nations of Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, there is some evidence of a rejection of and animosity towards Hallyu products from consumers who are beginning to question and disapprove of the …

The Effects Of Social Media As Low-Stakes Writing Tasks, Roxanne Loving
MA in English Theses
nspired by a recognition of high school students’ frequent disengagement during reading and their lack of comfort and confidence with finding ways to engage with texts, the purpose of this research was to examine the impact of social-media formatted low-stakes writing tasks in the high school English classroom. Drawing from research on writing instruction, reading engagement, literacy, and social media practices, the study utilized social media as a familiar writing format for high school students, bridging out-of-school literacy practices with classroom-based literacy practices. During the six-week study in a 10th-grade English course, student participants used Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook …
Transferring The Mantle: The Voice Of The Poet Prophet In The Works Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning And Emily Dickinson, Heidi Brown Hyde
Transferring The Mantle: The Voice Of The Poet Prophet In The Works Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning And Emily Dickinson, Heidi Brown Hyde
MA in English Theses
Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Emily Dickinson are arguably two of the most recognized names in nineteenth-century poetry. One was famous in her lifetime, a pioneer of women’s poetics with a searing vision of what her world was, her place in it and how to live. The other was only recognized for her poetic genius after her death, and but for the love of her family and friends, her poetic voice would have never transformed the landscape of American literature. Although these two women were separated by culture and geography, they both had a shared Congregationalist heritage, a poetic gift and …

Research On Teaching About Earth In The Context Of Societal Problems, Rachel Teasdale, Hannah Scherer, Lauren Holder, Rebecca Boger, Cory Forbes
Community Framework for Geoscience Education Research
Knowledge and consideration of societal issues are critical for students majoring in the geosciences, as well as for non-science students and the general public who vote and make decisions that should be based on sound science. Thus, the importance of integrating geoscience with other disciplines such as urban planning, social justice, politics, communications and more has become a critical call to action for geoscience researchers and educators that merits examination. Improving undergraduate STEM education with the use of relevant issues such as societal problems is a useful mechanism to help students find science to be personally relevant and to develop …

Transforming The Center: Inter-Religious Dialogue, Contemporary Popes, And A Faith-Inspired Path For Peacebuilding, Christopher Hrynkow, Maria Power
International Journal of Peace Studies
Abstract
This article maps two distinct bodies of thought before moving to a synthesis discussion, which proceeds in dialogue with the contributions of Pope Francis to fostering substantive peace. The first section presents select challenges and promises of employing inter-religious dialogue as a tool for peacebuilding. The article then positions papal contributions coupling inter-religious dialogue and peacebuilding. A synthesis section analyzes how Francis is buttressing this connection in particular ways with reference to his notion of building up cultures of dialogue and encounter. The results of this approach will be of interest to nonviolent activists, conflict transformation practitioners, religious studies …
Faithful Execution: The Persistent Myth Of Widespread Prosecutorial Misconduct, Timothy C. Harker
Faithful Execution: The Persistent Myth Of Widespread Prosecutorial Misconduct, Timothy C. Harker
Tennessee Law Review
Professors, politicians, activists, journalists, and bloggers alike stand ready to denounce prosecutorial misconduct-the more egregious the misconduct, the more vociferous the denunciation, and rightly so. Ordinarily, such public denunciation would have a salubrious effect. Unfortunately, this remedial process has been hijacked by those who insist that prosecutorial misconduct is widespread and has infected all facets of the criminal justice system, to the detriment of defendants and the consternation of the public. Their vitriol precludes a dispassionate evaluation of the criminal justice system generally and prosecutorial misconduct specifically. This article demonstrates that, contrary to expectations, prosecutorial misconduct occurs with reassuring infrequency. …
