Is There Really A Foreign Language Premium In Canada?: Evaluating The Foreign Language Effect On Canadian Wages, Peter C. Ki Feb 2018

Is There Really A Foreign Language Premium In Canada?: Evaluating The Foreign Language Effect On Canadian Wages, Peter C. Ki

Undergraduate Economic Review

Given the debates on whether knowing a foreign language has a positive or negative effect on wages, there is little or no research conducted on how it fares in Canada, despite extensive studies on French and English. Using the Public Use Microdata Files of the 2011 National Household Survey by Statistics Canada, I find a 2.84% wage penalty for Canadians who know a foreign language and an even greater penalty for Canadians who use these languages at work. I proceed to decompose the results by language and occupation to find varying results. I also attempt to use a religion proxy …

1 Timothy 3: Who Can Be An Officer? An Exegetical And Historical Study, Jose N. Briones Feb 2018

1 Timothy 3: Who Can Be An Officer? An Exegetical And Historical Study, Jose N. Briones

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

Who is able to hold the offices of the church, deacons and elders, within the Seventh-day Adventist Church? The question of gender roles and the church’s understanding of who is sanctioned by the Scriptures to aspire to that office is a revolving matter today. The topic has been around in discussion for about 40 years now without a final answer within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Therefore, it is the aim of this paper to focus on the consistency of the Seventh-day Adventist Church with its own statements and policies, and the text of 1 Timothy 3. Moreover, it will propose …

Cross-National Effectiveness Of Cognitive/Affective, Demographic, And Skills Selection Criteria, Wei Wang Feb 2018

Cross-National Effectiveness Of Cognitive/Affective, Demographic, And Skills Selection Criteria, Wei Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Although high unemployment rates exist in many countries of the world, companies continue to struggle to hire candidates whose personality traits and competencies match their needs. High unemployment rates and a global talent shortage can be seen as a fascinating contradiction that merits future research. This study investigates suitable personnel selection methods that assist recruiters in seeking the right person with the potential to contribute most to a business. It consolidates theories about personnel selection in a cross-national setting and link them with specific personality traits, job competencies, and person-organization fit (P-O fit) that could predict and enhance employee outcomes. …

Border Culture, Mexican Identity, Class, And Media Consumption: A Look Into “Fresa” High School Students, Melissa Analy Santillana Feb 2018

Border Culture, Mexican Identity, Class, And Media Consumption: A Look Into “Fresa” High School Students, Melissa Analy Santillana

Theses and Dissertations

The border strip between the south of the United States and the north of Mexico provide an excellent opportunity to study the effects of the flow of media productions from the United States to Mexico. Many communication theories have attempted to explain the reception of transnational media flows to Latin American countries. Scholars from the cultural imperialism camp argue that the flow of culture is unidirectional from capitalist or First World countries (mainly the United States) to developing countries (also know as the Global South); other theories claim there is an asymmetrical dependence between developed and underdeveloped countries (Fejes, 1981). …

Legal Translation And Court Interpreting In Laredo, Tx, Karen Leal Feb 2018

Legal Translation And Court Interpreting In Laredo, Tx, Karen Leal

Theses and Dissertations

The disciplines of translation and interpreting have long been testament of the power that the transfer of words can impart on a civilization. The disciplines are broken down into specialized fields that each have their own requirements to implement the use of interpreters and translators in various sections of life. Legal translation and court interpreting fall under one of these specialized fields. The implementation of interpreters and translators within the federal court setting can be found in United States’ code and requires an extensive and rigorous training and examination to fulfill the line of work. However, state and local, or …

The (Re)Activation Of Idiomatic Expressions, Ariana C. Garcia Feb 2018

The (Re)Activation Of Idiomatic Expressions, Ariana C. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

These studies examine the comprehension of idiomatic expressions by bilingual speakers. The purpose of this study was to look at the (re)activation of the meaning (literal vs. figurative) of idiomatic expressions by bilinguals. Spanish-dominant, English-dominant, and balanced bilinguals listened to English sentences containing idiomatic expressions of the type, “I’m not one to make a scene, but after he yelled at me, that was impossible to avoid.” Participants made lexical decisions to critical targets that were literally (e.g., “play”), figuratively (e.g., “disturbance”), and unrelated (i.e., controls) to the critical idiomatic expressions. For experiment 1, critical targets were presented immediately at idiom …

Individual Ambidexterity, Motivating Language, And Employee Outcomes: A Cross-Country Analysis, Cau Ngoc Nguyen Feb 2018

Individual Ambidexterity, Motivating Language, And Employee Outcomes: A Cross-Country Analysis, Cau Ngoc Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

Organizational ambidexterity has been recognized as a critical antecedent of firm success. Recently, scholars have started to contend that ambidexterity is not only essential at the firm, but also at the individual level. Thus, individuals must engage in exploitative and explorative behaviors to be successful. However, theoretical and empirical focus of individual ambidexterity remains limited and fragmented. This dissertation seeks to gain a better understanding of individual ambidexterity by integrating insights from motivating language theory and the literature on contextual ambidexterity to develop a hypothetical model linking motivating language, individual ambidexterity, and several employee outcomes including absenteeism, turnover intention, job …

Copyrighting The Dead Sea Scrolls: Qimron V. Shanks, David L. Cohen Feb 2018

Copyrighting The Dead Sea Scrolls: Qimron V. Shanks, David L. Cohen

Maine Law Review

In 1992, Professor Elisha Qimron of Ben Gurion University in Be'er Sheva, Israel, brought suit against the editors and publisher of A Facsimile Edition of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a complete set of photographs of the scrolls, for copyright infringement and the tort of mental anguish asking for approximately $250,000 in damages. The case centered on an appendix of the book which included a portion of a scroll text, Misgat Ma'Aseh ha-Torah—Some Rulings Pertaining to the Torah (MMT), reconstructed by Qimron. MMT consists of 121 lines of text, and Qimron's reconstruction—referred to in the suit as the Compiled Text (CT)—consisted …

The Tradition Of Sustantive Judicial Review: A Case Study Of Continuity In Constitutional Jurisprudence, David M. Gold Feb 2018

The Tradition Of Sustantive Judicial Review: A Case Study Of Continuity In Constitutional Jurisprudence, David M. Gold

Maine Law Review

Until the 1970s, scholars routinely asserted that courts in the late nineteenth century initiated a radical reinterpretation of due process of law in their attempt to stem an onrushing tide of legislation designed to regulate business activity. This protection-of-business theory of due process development originated with the efforts of socialist and progressive commentators of the early twentieth century to discredit what they saw as a “revolutionary” transformation of due process from a term of “nominal significance in American constitutional law” into a bulwark of property. Progressive intellectuals assailed the judiciary in similar terms. Yale University president Arthur T. Hadley, an …

Giampietro Gobo and Andrea Molle describe their book, Doing Ethnography, as a recipe for cooking ethnography. In this book review, I will take you on a journey through this culinary delight. I provide an overview of the points of interest, a short description of what can be found at each location, and the benefits of the various stops on the tours. Overall, this book is an appropriate choice for novice researchers or anyone who is interested in the practice of ethnography.

Heganism, Thomas E. Randall Feb 2018

Heganism, Thomas E. Randall

Between the Species

An emblematic association exists between meat consumption and the gender identity hegemonic masculinity. This association is so strong that men who pursue meatless diets (especially vegans) are likely to be socially ostracized. Heganism is a diet/gender identity that aims to reconstruct hegemonic masculinity with the goal of removing these stigmas attached to male veganism. Yet heganism fails to do this, and, in fact, worsens the marginalization of male vegans. Therefore, heganism ought to be rejected. Instead, an alternative option for reducing the marginalization of male vegans could be found in the emergent literature on non-hegemonic masculinities. By rejecting hegemonic …

An Exploration Of High Level Language Comprehension Deficits And The Factors Influencing Them Following Blast Exposure In Afghanistan And Iraq War Veterans, Judith R. Koebli Feb 2018

An Exploration Of High Level Language Comprehension Deficits And The Factors Influencing Them Following Blast Exposure In Afghanistan And Iraq War Veterans, Judith R. Koebli

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Our servicemen and women are facing challenges with reintegration into civilian life as noted by the high levels of homelessness, unemployment, and suicide. Behavioral aspects and PTSD have been the focus of these problems. There may be additional factors that negatively impact successful reintegration. There may be weaknesses in communication skills such as auditory processing deficits and higher-level language deficits secondary to blast exposure. Twelve veterans with history of blast exposure and six veteran controls were compared in areas of auditory processing, higher-level language skills (inferencing, ambiguity, figurative language), and attention, memory, and visual processing speed. Correlations with auditory processing …

From English Learner To Spanish Learner: Raciolinguistic Beliefs That Influence Heritage Spanish Speaking Teacher Candidates, Allison Briceño, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Eduardo Muñoz-Muñoz

Teacher Education

This qualitative study explored Spanish-speaking teacher credential students’ beliefs about academic language that might promote or inhibit their decision to become bilingual teachers. Data includes interviews with 11 bilingual teacher candidates who were heritage Spanish speakers. Findings show that most were only aware of English-only educational contexts and did not know that bilingual teaching and the bilingual authorization pathway were options. Their schooling experience fostered English hegemony; even their Spanish classes were pervaded by linguistic purism and elitism. Schools taught them that their registers of Spanish, which they learned at home, were insufficient, inappropriate or incorrect. Consequently, they questioned their …

International Students’ Responses To Explicit Instruction On Vocabulary Learning Strategies: Implications For Eap Courses, Wing Shuen Lau

TESOL Theses

Given that the importance of understanding the academic language is strongly associated with the academic vocabulary size, vocabulary knowledge is regarded as one of the most crucial areas of language competence to bolster academic achievement. The present study investigates the effectiveness of two different strategies of vocabulary acquisition in English including 1) learning from sample sentences and 2) learning from word parts. Results are significant for immediate testing and reveal the beneficial role of explicit instruction on vocabulary learning strategies that increases international students’ English vocabulary learning ability. The study also discusses survey responses from the participants in relation to …
