Coping With Stereotype Threat: Multiple Identities And The Role Of Gender-Professional Identity Integration (G-Pii), Amy Jia Ying Lim
Coping With Stereotype Threat: Multiple Identities And The Role Of Gender-Professional Identity Integration (G-Pii), Amy Jia Ying Lim
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Negative stereotypes concerning females’ inferior quantitative abilities continue to hinder females’ preference and success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Studies on multiple identities show that priming females with a favorable identity, a social identity they possess that is associated with superior quantitative abilities, can reduce the aversive effects of stereotype threat. However, this line of research overlooked the fact that females manage their multiple identities in different ways and therefore respond to identity cues differently. This paper examined the role of gender-professional identity integration (G-PII), an individual difference on perceived compatibility of gender and professional identities, in …

Context Recovery In Location-Based Social Networks, Wen Haw Chong
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation addresses context recovery in Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN), which are platforms where users post content from various locations. With this general LBSN definition, many existing social media platforms that support user-generated location relevant content using mobile devices could also qualify as LBSNs. Context recovery for such user posts refers to recovering the venue and the semantic contexts of these user posts. Such information is useful for user profiling and to support various applications such as venue recommendation and location- based advertising.
Performing The Black-White Biracial Identity: The Material, Discursive, And Psychological Components Of Subject Formation, Travis M. Marn
Performing The Black-White Biracial Identity: The Material, Discursive, And Psychological Components Of Subject Formation, Travis M. Marn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this new materialist study was to examine the subject performativity of ‘biracial’ individuals in an interview setting in order to disrupt the humanist assumptions of racial identity in psychological research. I also sought to promote critical resistance to subjectification to examine ‘race’ without reifying participants’ raced subjects. Four research questions guided this study: How does the researcher, researched, and interview intra-activity serve to instantiate the biracial subject? Under what material alterations to the interview process do different subjects come to be? Which subjects come to be or fail to come to be in the interview intra-action? How …

Leonardo Boff’S Social-Environmental Ecology Exposition, Analysis, And Appropriation For Lutheran Theology, Alan Furst
Master of Art Theology Thesis
Furst, Alan Diego. “Leonardo Boff’s Social-Environmental Ecology: Exposition, Analysis, and Appropriation for Lutheran Theology.” MA Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2018. 107pp.
Ecological issues throughout the world present an urgent need for a deepened theological approach to the doctrine of creation. In fact, recent studies have shown that such issues point to a more serious problem with the entire system at work shaping social relations today. This situation calls Christian theologians to rethink the doctrine of creation in light of ecological issues. This includes Lutheran theologians, who still need to address the current situation involving ecological issues and to offer reflections and …

Hybrid Recommender For Online Petitions With Social Network And Psycholinguistic Features, Ahmed Elnoshokaty
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The online petition has become one of the most important channels of civic participation. Most of the state-of-the-art online platforms, however, tend to use simple indicators (such as popularity) to rank petitions, hence creating a situation where the most popular petitions dominate the rank and attract most people’s attention. For the petitions which focus on specific issues, they are often in a disadvantageous position on the list. For example, a petition for local environment problem may not be seen by many people who are really concerned with it, simply because it takes multiple pages to reach it. Therefore, the simple …
Art Therapy Best Practices For Working With The Deaf Community: Phenomenological Study, Autumn Whiteman
Art Therapy Best Practices For Working With The Deaf Community: Phenomenological Study, Autumn Whiteman
EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers
Art therapy is currently practiced with the Deaf community, but there is a lack of research and a gap in scholarship in the area of art therapy with the Deaf population. There is an intense need for research about the effectiveness and potential benefit of art therapy with the Deaf population. A phenomenological research model was used to collect interview responses from art therapists and to analyze them for common themes. This study intended to provide a list of some art therapy best practices for working with the Deaf community in a clinical capacity. However, due to a lack of …
La Femme Bisclavret: The Female Of The Species?, Alison Langdon
La Femme Bisclavret: The Female Of The Species?, Alison Langdon
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Conventional humanist readings of Bisclavret approach the lai from an anthropocentric perspective, in which animal nature is merely an allegory for human nature. In such a reading, the werewolf protagonist is a foil for his much more beastly if wholly human wife, with the underlying assumption being that animal nature is something to be rejected. That the marker of Lady Bisclavret's bestial nature—her noselessness—is transmitted through the generations of only female descendants seems to echo medieval antifeminist truisms about female perfidy. However, approaching the lai from a critical animal studies perspective can help dismantle conventional assumptions about the privileged status …

What Lawyers Can And Should Do About Mendacity In Politics, Heidi Li Feldman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Donald Trump has brought new attention to the mendacity of politicians. Both major national newspapers have reported tallies of Trump's false and misleading claims. On November 14, 2017, The Washington Post reported that in the 298 days that President Trump has been president, he had made 1,628 false or misleading claims, telling them at a rate of nine per day in the thirty-five days prior to November 14. Trump, the Post reported, has made fifty false or misleading claims “that he as repeated three or more times.” The Post also catalogued scores of “flip-flops” from Trump. In general, from 2016 …

From Borderlands To Border Islands: Intersections Between Anzaldúa's Chicana Feminist Theory And U.S. Latina Literature From The Hispanic Caribbean, Cristina Gonzalez Martin
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies three texts by three U.S. Latina authors from the Hispanic Caribbean through the lens of Chicana feminist border theory. The works analyzed are How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991) by Dominican author Julia Alvarez, Dreaming in Cuban (1992) by Cuban-American novelist Cristina García, and the memoir Almost a Woman (1998) by Puerto Rican author Esmeralda Santiago. The theoretical framework used is Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. The objective is to show how these texts manifest the formation of a hybrid, diasporic, in-between identity that corresponds with Anzaldúa’s definition of mestiza consciousness or la …

A Co-Matching Model For Multi-Choice Reading Comprehension, Shuohang Wang, Mo Yu, Shiyu Chang, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multi-choice reading comprehension is a challenging task, which involves the matching between a passage and a question-answer pair. This paper proposes a new co-matching approach to this problem, which jointly models whether a passage can match both a question and a candidate answer. Experimental results on the RACE dataset demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance.

“Compassion And Benignytee”: A Reassessment Of The Relationship Between Canacee And The Falcon In Chaucer’S “Squire’S Tale”, Melissa Ridley Elmes
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Among its many elements, Chaucer’s “Squire’s Tale” includes an emotionally-charged dialogue between two aristocratic female figures: the human daughter of a king, Canacee, and the wounded falcon she meets in the wood. Scholars have debated the nature of this relationship in interspecial, gendered, and specifically feminist and ecofeminist terms. This essay provides a brief retrospective on some of the most recent scholarship examining their relationship—van Dyke (2005); Kordecki (2011); Crane (2012); and Schotland (2012 and 2015)—leading into a reassessment in two parts: first, that the affinity- and experience-driven bond these female figures develop supports a reading of this scene that …

The objectives of the LIS courses are to provide a real-life exposure to the students through up-to-date training and practical exercises. Besides, the course curricula should have orientations towards an understanding of basic foundations of the integrated theory. The balanced coverage of both theoretical and practical aspects will enable the students and trainees for professional work and the same will upgrade their level of knowledge to contemplate on the new frontiers of librarianship. As this subject is highly empirical in nature, therefore, incessant encounter with the happenings of the real field is of prime importance. The university offers postgraduate courses, …

Searching For The X-Factor: Exploring Corpus Subjectivity For Word Embeddings, Maksim Tkachenko, Chong Cher Chia, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We explore the notion of subjectivity, and hypothesize that word embeddings learnt from input corpora of varying levels of subjectivity behave differently on natural language processing tasks such as classifying a sentence by sentiment, subjectivity, or topic. Through systematic comparative analyses, we establish this to be the case indeed. Moreover, based on the discovery of the outsized role that sentiment words play on subjectivity-sensitive tasks such as sentiment classification, we develop a novel word embedding SentiVec which is infused with sentiment information from a lexical resource, and is shown to outperform baselines on such tasks.

Ubuntu is an open source software platform that runs everywhere from the smartphone, the tablet and the PC to the server and the cloud. In Ubuntu, there are many self-contained or third-party software packages for different use, and a bug report in Ubuntu could affect one or more packages simultaneously. Identifying the common package bugs in Ubuntu can help both developers and users better understand the packages they are developing or using, and also provide further guidelines to developers of similar packages in the future. In this paper, we perform a large-scale empirical study of common package bugs on Ubuntu …
Word Counts In Response To Cognitively Demanding Essay Prompts As Reflections Of General Cognitive Ability And Broad Cognitive Abilities, Michael Beaumont Armstrong
Word Counts In Response To Cognitively Demanding Essay Prompts As Reflections Of General Cognitive Ability And Broad Cognitive Abilities, Michael Beaumont Armstrong
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Natural language processing techniques can be used to analyze text and speech data. These techniques have been applied within many domains to date but have only recently been examined in the domain of personnel assessment. By linking workplace-relevant constructs such as general cognitive ability (GCA) to natural language processing outcomes such as word counts, a foundation for language-based psychological assessment of those abilities can be laid. Over 400 participants were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk to write cognitively demanding essays and complete a battery of cognitive tests. Essays were analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). Structural equation modeling …
Model-Less Fuzzy Logic Control For The Nasa Modeling And Control For Agile Aircraft Development Program, Keith A. Benjamin
Model-Less Fuzzy Logic Control For The Nasa Modeling And Control For Agile Aircraft Development Program, Keith A. Benjamin
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The NASA Modeling and Control for Agile Aircraft Development (MCAAD) program seeks to develop new ways to control unknown aircraft to make the aircraft development cycle more efficient. More specifically, there is a desire to control an aircraft with an unknown mathematical model using only first principles of flight. In other words, rather than using a rigorously developed mathematical model combined with wind-tunnel tests, a controller is sought which would allow one to bypass the development of a rigorous mathematical model and enter wind-tunnel testing more directly. This paper presents the design of a fuzzy PID controller, governed by a …

The Mountain Of A Thousand Holes: Shipwreck Traditions And Treasure Hunting On Oregon's North Coast, Cameron La Follette, Dennis Griffin, Douglas Deur
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
“Euro-Americans in coastal communities conflated and amplified Native American oral traditions of shipwrecks in Tillamook County, increasingly focusing on buried treasure,” write authors Cameron La Follette, Dennis Griffin and Douglas Deur. In this article, the authors trace the Euro-American blending of Native oral tradition with romances and adventure tales that helped create the “legends contributing to Neahkahnie [Mountain]'s reputation as Oregon's treasure-seeking haven.” They also examine the history of treasure-seeking in the area and describe the escalating conflict between Oregon's treasure-hunting statute and cultural resources protection laws, which led finally to statutory repeal that ended all treasure-hunting on state lands. …

Achievements And Limits Of Strategic Communication For Nation-Building: The Case Of Spain’S Catalan Region (1979-2017), César García
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
This paper explores the use of strategic communication for nation building purposes in Catalonia after the approval of the Second Statute of Autonomy in 1979. During this period, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Catalonia’s self-government political organization, has used the high degree of autonomy in a number of areas involving culture, communications or education, among others, to enhance a Catalan identity opposed to the Spanish identity. Soft power approaches – mainly the promotion of Catalan language, culture, sports and symbols – and the implementation of linguistic laws have resulted in a positive climate of opinion concerning an inclusive Catalan identity in …

Understanding Complexity Leadership: Lesson From Emerging Environment, Agnieszka Dziubińska
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
In the article, the author concentrates on the exploration of the nature of leadership behaviours and their impact on organisational performance in multinational enterprises (MNEs) in turbulent environments. The results of studies were to answer the following two questions. How and which leadership approach helps understand adaptive processes in an emerging environment? What are complex leadership behaviours of MNEs and how do they influence a successful organisational performance? The article begins with theoretical foundations for the perception of leadership in the light of assumptions resulting from the complexity theory. Then, the empirical context for deliberations, i.e. behaviours of international enterprises …
Beyond Human Intelligence: Redefining Intelligence, Jens Pohl
Beyond Human Intelligence: Redefining Intelligence, Jens Pohl
Architecture
The digital revolution driven by global connectivity, computing as a utility, artificial intelligence, and information sharing on an unprecedented scale is forcing the redefinition of intelligence in a broader context that extends beyond human intelligence. This paper addresses the principal characteristics of biological intelligence, as it exists on planet Earth and the form it may take in an extraterrestrial context. Human intelligence, as the most evolved form of biological intelligence on Earth, is treated as the aggregation of multiple intelligences that cannot be encapsulated in a single metric such as an Intelligence Quotient (IQ). The concept of a postbiological civilization …
Critical Race Theory And Caring As Channels For Transcending Borders Between An African American Professor And Her Latina/O Students, Jacqueline B. Koonce
Critical Race Theory And Caring As Channels For Transcending Borders Between An African American Professor And Her Latina/O Students, Jacqueline B. Koonce
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
This reflective essay uncovers ways in which critical race theory and caring are key to crossing racial, cultural, and linguistic borders between professors and their students. Many scholars have noted how critical reflection relates to effective teaching, especially when taking into account student learning. Reflecting upon archival data and participant observation, the author describes, through various stories, how she uses critical race theory and caring to connect with her students in spite of their differences. The author also provides examples of how her students reciprocate her care in extravagant ways.

This dissertation maps the role of testimonial injustice in education and the role of pedagogy in addressing knowledge injustices. Drawing from the disciplinary positions of philosophy of education and social justice education, this dissertation provides an analysis of student academic work to explore intergroup dialogue pedagogy. Specifically, this dissertation investigate if and how the education practice of intergroup dialogue pedagogy can facilitate epistemic justice. This analysis combines philosophical inquiry and document analysis to describe the ways in which practices of learning are related to social identifications. Finally, this dissertation offers applications of this theoretical analysis of epistemic justice for education …
