Belligerent Mothers And The Power Of Feminine Speech In _The Owl And The Nightingale_, Wendy A. Matlock
Belligerent Mothers And The Power Of Feminine Speech In _The Owl And The Nightingale_, Wendy A. Matlock
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
The Middle English poem The Owl and the Nightingale famously records the dispute between a hostile Nightingale and a bellicose Owl. Within that dialogue the birds reproduce themselves in word and egg, in rhetoric and body. Their digressions on bodies and scatology and on childbearing and childrearing become fertilizer that expands maternal authority into public, intellectual discourse. In addition to calling forth their own communicative powers, both characters aggressively recount narratives best known from the work of Marie de France, a voice feminist scholars have successfully restored to the canon, to condemn their foe. In this light, I argue, The …

Text Or Call?: How Mode Of Communication Impacts Desire For Subsequent Conversation, Rosemary Leo
Text Or Call?: How Mode Of Communication Impacts Desire For Subsequent Conversation, Rosemary Leo
Honors College Theses
Previous research has found that there is variability in the effectiveness of different types of digitally facilitated communication, but no research has been conducted on whether the mode of communication being used impacts the desire to engage in subsequent conversations with a particular individual. This study examined whether the mode of initial communication would have an impact upon the desire to engage in subsequent conversations. In a sample of 33 participants ages 18-22, I sought to examine how phone conversations and texting differ as methods of initial communication in regard to their impact on participants’ expressed desire for continued communication. …
A World Of Apologies, Samantha Hickman
A World Of Apologies, Samantha Hickman
Honors College Theses
A World of Apologies is a music video that was created in order to promote multiculturalism and foreign culture education. Within this video, twelve different languages are showcased to the tune of the world-wide pop music hit “Sorry” by Justin Bieber. The video includes multiple important aspects of culture such as music, language, art, and dance. The video was made in hopes to bring about culture appreciation and to bring people around the world together, especially since the current political and social climate in many countries nowadays are in turmoil. Not only does the video itself speak to this message, …
Improving Seaglider Efficiency: An Analysis Of Wing Shapes, Hull Morphologies, And Propulsion Methods, Christopher James Hockley
Improving Seaglider Efficiency: An Analysis Of Wing Shapes, Hull Morphologies, And Propulsion Methods, Christopher James Hockley
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Autonomous underwater gliders are a family of autonomous underwater vehicles used for long-term observation of oceanic environments. These gliders leverage changes in buoyancy and the resulting vertical motion, to generate forward locomotion via hydrodynamic surfaces. In order to function for extended periods, these systems operate in a low-speed, low-drag regime. This research examines factors impacting the operational efficiencies of gliders, including morphological changes, configuration changes, and propulsion. An interesting question arises when considering the operational efficiencies of conventionally propelled systems at the operating speeds typical of gliders. Can a conventional propulsion system match the efficiency of an underwater glider buoyancy …

Backward Transfer Of Apology Strategies From Japanese To English: Do English L1 Speakers Use Japanese-Style Apologies When Speaking English?, Candice April Flowers
Theses and Dissertations
When learning a second language, there are elements of a learner's native language that can transfer and are exhibited during production in the second language. This can extend not only to the way things are said but even to gestures that are language- and speech-act-specific. However, there is evidence that the same can occur backwards, that is to say that elements of a second language can be exhibited during production of one's native language (Pavlenko and Jarvis, 2002). This study focuses on English L1 learners of Japanese who have spent significant time both in country and learning the language to …
Inferential Reasoning As A Means Of Avoiding Plagiarism In Paraphrasing, Atikhom Thienthong
Inferential Reasoning As A Means Of Avoiding Plagiarism In Paraphrasing, Atikhom Thienthong
PASAA
Paraphrasing is a signature practice of constructing intertextual discourse in academic writing. It is a story retelling technique commonly employed by academic writing classes to tackle plagiarism. However, teaching and learning of paraphrasing tend to place a very heavy emphasis on literal meanings of source messages and faithful reproductions of source meanings through new linguistic systems (e.g. altering syntactic structures, changing lexical forms, substituting synonyms), which may not effectively respond to authentic academic writing. Given this textual orientation, inferential reasoning which is essential in academic discourse tends to be relatively overlooked. To address this neglect, this article proposes an alternative …
Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup
Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this article, we explore affordances of adopting the framework of praxeology by Chevallard in the analysis of mathematics classroom communication in relation to the communication in a textbook. While adopting praxeology, we carried out detailed analysis of communication in both classroom data and textbooks. The construed praxeologies describe the organisation of knowledge expressed for the same type of task in both classroom and textbook. The praxeologies were compared, with specific attention to the teacher’s practice. This analysis illuminates how teachers’ practices, realised in classroom communication, may be compared to other texts describing the same topics, with a focus on …
Fluxus: The Significant Role Of Female Artists, Megan Butcher
Fluxus: The Significant Role Of Female Artists, Megan Butcher
Honors College Theses
The Fluxus movement of the 1960s and early 1970s laid the groundwork for future female artists and performance art as a medium. However, throughout my research, I have found that while there is evidence that female artists played an important role in this art movement, they were often not written about or credited for their contributions. Literature on the subject is also quite limited. Many books and journals only mention the more prominent female artists of Fluxus, leaving the lesser-known female artists difficult to research. The lack of scholarly discussion has led to the inaccurate documentation of the development of …
Doctoral Students' Perceived Needs And Preferences For Supervisors' Written Feedback, Yenus Nurie
Doctoral Students' Perceived Needs And Preferences For Supervisors' Written Feedback, Yenus Nurie
PASAA
This study examines doctorial students' needs and preferences for written feedback on thesis writing from supervisors. Several studies have explored students' preferences for written feedback to respond to students writing in the classroom. However, relatively little or no research has been previously reported about what aspects of written feedback (content, generic or linguistic) are preferred by PhD students to thesis writing in the Ethiopian context. A questionnaire was administered and collected from fifty one doctoral candidates who were currently pursuing their projects in four disciplines. Participants were purposefully selected to complete a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the …

While language differences by gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) have been identified, the domain of pragmatics, specifically, communicative functions (CF) has been understudied. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate mothers’ CF use with African American, European American, and Latino American boys and girls of middle and low SES. CFs were coded from each dyads’ (N=95) learning and play interaction from the National Center for Early Development and Learning’s (NCEDL, 2005) study of Family and Social Environments (Aikens, Coleman, & Bryant, 2008). Demographic factors were correlated with talkativeness, and Directing and Mother Directing, Responding, and Projecting were …
Framing Campus Free Expression Conflict Through A Dispute Resolution Optic: Insights For Campus Leaders, Robert H. Jerry Ii
Framing Campus Free Expression Conflict Through A Dispute Resolution Optic: Insights For Campus Leaders, Robert H. Jerry Ii
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This Essay, with campus leaders as its intended audience (i.e., presidents, chancellors, provosts, deans, department chairs, and faculty, staff, and student governance leaders), maintains that acquaintance with constructs familiar to dispute resolution scholars and practitioners can deepen understanding of free expression conflict on college campuses, increase self-awareness and enhance leaders’ ability to act consciously and purposively in response to conflict, and help equip campus leaders with useful tools for managing conflict when it arises. This Essay will stress framing, but many constructs in the dispute resolution field illuminate the techniques and skills campus leaders need if they are to manage …
The Highest Form Of Like: Snapchat, College Students And Hyperpersonal Communication, Timothy L. Cigelske
The Highest Form Of Like: Snapchat, College Students And Hyperpersonal Communication, Timothy L. Cigelske
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The purpose of this study explores how college students engaged with others on Snapchat and how that differed from other Social Networking Sites (SNS). Social Information Process (SIP) Theory was applied as a framework for understanding the effects of time-limited (disappearing) messages and extended conversations that can lead to “hyperpersonal” communication, a form of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) that surpasses the level of affection and emotion of Face to Face (FtF) interaction. In a series of focus groups, college students explained how they used Snapchat and other SNS and the effects it had on interpersonal communication. The participants described emotional …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
How close are we to the reality of all students having the opportunity to learn another language and gaining support for these efforts from the general public? The answer has a long history, which we point out by referencing articles that span the 50‐year history of Foreign Language Annals. From the 1979 President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies report under President Jimmy Carter to the recent article by Kroll and Dussias (2017) on the benefits of multilingualism, this article tracks ACTFL’s advocacy efforts over the years. Most recently, the 2017 launch of the Lead with Languages public awareness …
Sesat Pikir Aplikasi Hermeneutika Hukum Menurut Hans-Georg Gadamer, Fernando Morganda Manullang
Sesat Pikir Aplikasi Hermeneutika Hukum Menurut Hans-Georg Gadamer, Fernando Morganda Manullang
Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan
Some legal writing written by legal scholars interpret legal text methodologically in their analysis, while seeking its philosophical foundation, namely Hans-Georg Gadamer’s legal hermeneutics. Such hermeneutics is part of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics which can be applied to law, aside from theology and philology. Such hermeneutics employs in general and on ontological level thereof. Such understanding is unknown in jurisprudence, because the interpretation in jurisprudence is more methodological, an idea that Gadamer clearly opposes. Such scholarly legal perspective potentially creates some fallacies towards Gadamer's idea on legal hermeneutics
Expanding To The Edges: Central Numic Dual Number, John Mclaughlin
Expanding To The Edges: Central Numic Dual Number, John Mclaughlin
English Faculty Publications
The Central Numic (Uto-Aztecan) dual number marking system on nouns and pronouns is of interest because even though most of the component morphemes involved in the system are reconstructible to Proto-Numic, the system itself is not. Indeed, while the reconstructible Proto-Numic system is rudimentary, the Central Numic system is robust and has expanded to the point that there are few environments where dual is not marked on equal footing with singular and plural. The Central Numic system is of further interest because it involves cycles of grammaticalization and not just a single diachronic event. This contrasts with the other two …

This volume comprises an internationally renowned group of scholars presenting a wide range of original essays on Bible translation, the influence of culture on …
Detecting Deceptive Impression Management Behaviors In Interviews Using Natural Language Processing, Elena Margaret Lawrence Auer
Detecting Deceptive Impression Management Behaviors In Interviews Using Natural Language Processing, Elena Margaret Lawrence Auer
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Deceptive impression management (IM) is often used by applicants in employment interviews to improve their chances of receiving a job offer. Self-report measures of deceptive IM are typically used to evaluate interview faking in a lab setting but are limited when used in practice due to social desirability concerns. Given this limitation, natural language processing (NLP) has potential as a tool to unobtrusively assess raw interview content and measure deceptive IM. This study examined the use of open and closed-vocabulary NLP approaches for the detection of deceptive IM in mock employment interviews. In general, neither of these approaches successfully predicted …
י הנני (Here Am I, Send Me): Person And Proximity In Literary Prophecy, Matthew S. Kershaw
י הנני (Here Am I, Send Me): Person And Proximity In Literary Prophecy, Matthew S. Kershaw
Theses and Dissertations
Prophecy is a poorly understood genre, commonly understood as literature primarily focused on mantic visions of future events. A more nuanced understanding of literary prophecy recognizes the limits of this view, as well as the diversity of genres within many prophetic texts. These two views present one problem: forced readings of prophecy as a kind of reverse history on the one end and the problem of generic diversity on the other, resist an easy scheme of classification for prophetic literature. This study elucidates some of the problematic assumptions of primarily Biblical prophecy, and suggests that contemporary genre theory"“which views genre …
Attitudes Towards Racism In Kkk Forums: Denouncement, Avoidance, And Neutralization, Natasha R. Wood
Attitudes Towards Racism In Kkk Forums: Denouncement, Avoidance, And Neutralization, Natasha R. Wood
Student Theses
Recent research has attempted to better understand the complexity of modern terrorism, which seems evermore present in our worldview. However, the scope of the literature lacks representation of far-right ideology, and that of White supremacists within the campaign. Specifically, the potential fear of being labeled as a racist has been recognized as both an obstacle to communicating racial issues and as a potential driver behind the self-imposed social exclusion of White supremacists, which may further contribute to their radicalization rigidity around race-relevant political issues. The current study is an inquiry into the internal perceptions and conceptualizations of racism among members …
The Reality And The Apparent: Worldviews And Missiological Strategies, Cristian Dumitrescu, Hatsarmaveth Venkaya
The Reality And The Apparent: Worldviews And Missiological Strategies, Cristian Dumitrescu, Hatsarmaveth Venkaya
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"Worldview is an abstract concept used for identifying a set of assumptions people use to organize their view of reality. Conceptualizing worldview is a challenging task. Nobody has seen a worldview, but everybody has one. A worldview informs a person’s interpretation of reality, their cosmology, and determines their actions and reactions. Charles Kraft (1988) considers worldview as the “center control box” of a person’s life and communal culture. Most assumptions reflect one’s unverified beliefs and answers to fundamental questions, such as who they are and who others are, how people should relate to each other, what causes things to happen, …
Allegory As Experiential Communication: Metaphorical Mapping Between Bunyan’S Emotions And The Pilgrim’S Progress, Philip Sitterding
Allegory As Experiential Communication: Metaphorical Mapping Between Bunyan’S Emotions And The Pilgrim’S Progress, Philip Sitterding
Senior Honors Theses
John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678) is a classic example of allegory. While literary critics tend to minimize allegory’s value as a mode, The Pilgrim’s Progress demonstrates a proclivity for genre-transcending techniques that encourage looking at allegory in a new light. Namely, parallels between The Pilgrim’s Progress and Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1660) show Bunyan drawing on deep personal emotion to fuel characterization.

A Comparison Of Phonetic Convergence In Conversational Interaction And Speech Shadowing, Jennifer S. Pardo, Adelya Urmanche, Sherilyn Wilman-Depena, Jaclyn Wiener, Nicholas Mason, Keagan Francis, Melanie Ward
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Phonetic convergence is a form of variation in speech production in which a talker adopts aspects of another talker's acoustic–phonetic repertoire. To date, this phenomenon has been investigated in non-interactive laboratory tasks extensively and in conversational interaction to a lesser degree. The present study directly compares phonetic convergence in conversational interaction and in a non-interactive speech shadowing task among a large set of talkers who completed both tasks, using a holistic AXB perceptual similarity measure. Phonetic convergence occurred in a new role-neutral conversational task, exhibiting a subtle effect with high variability across talkers that is typical of findings reported in …
Psychometric Properties Of The Satisfaction With Life Scale Among Arab Americans, Afnan Musaitif
Psychometric Properties Of The Satisfaction With Life Scale Among Arab Americans, Afnan Musaitif
Dissertations (1934 -)
The body of literature on the Arab American population is growing both in breadth and depth. A biopsychosocial perspective has been applied in a review of the research on this population revealing gaps in the area of well-being among Arab Americans. Particularly, few studies have investigated well-being as defined by positive constructs, positive psychology, subjective well-being, or psychological wellbeing. More specifically, measures of these conceptualizations of well-being beyond the deficit model have not been validated among Arab Americans. This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of one of the most commonly used subjective well-being instruments, the Satisfaction With Life …

Addressing Childhood Adversity And Social Determinants Inpediatric Primary Care:Recommendations For New Hampshire, Marguerite Corvini, Katherine Cox, Molly O’Neil, Jeanne Ryer Edd, Holly Deblois Tutko
All Materials
Research has clearly demonstrated the significant short- and long-term impacts of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the social determinants of health (SDOH) on child health and well-being.1 Identifying and addressing ACEs and SDOH will require a coordinated and systems-based approach. Pediatric primary care* plays a critical role in this system, and there is a growing emphasis on these issues that may be impacting a family. As awareness of ACEs and SDOH grows, so too does the response effort within the State of New Hampshire. Efforts to address ACEs and the SDOH have been initiated by a variety of stakeholders, including …

Black Box, White Cube, Gray Zone: Dance Exhibitions And Audience Attention, Claire Bishop
Black Box, White Cube, Gray Zone: Dance Exhibitions And Audience Attention, Claire Bishop
Publications and Research
Relocated from the “black box” of experimental theatre to the “white cube” of the gallery, dance in the museum brings about new forms of performance — the dance exhibition — and new protocols of audience behavior that permit, even encourage, smartphone photography. This is the “gray zone” of recent performance, which is both a symptom of, and compensation for, the virtualization of contemporary perception.
El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins
El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the punk genre's evolution into commercial mainstream music in Spain and Mexico. It looks at how this evolution altered both the aesthetic and gesture of the genre. This evolution can be seen by examining four bands that followed similar musical and commercial trajectories. In Spain, Kaka de Luxe and Radio Futura; in Mexico, Size and Ritmo Peligroso. Since punk music's gesture is both visceral and political, various methods of suppressing or containing the punk gesture arise. For both Spain and Mexico, containing the punk gesture was a matter of government censorship in the early years of punk. …
