Witnessing The Event Of Deconstruction: Cultural Encounter Between Louisiana And Japan And Its Implications For Education, Kaori Shimizu Jul 2018

Witnessing The Event Of Deconstruction: Cultural Encounter Between Louisiana And Japan And Its Implications For Education, Kaori Shimizu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cultural diversity is widely understood as needed, and the importance of learning about other cultures has been emphasized. However, if other cultures are located and explained within the framework where the culture of the Self invisibly maintains the fixed normative status, it would result in “a creation of cultural diversity and a containment of cultural difference” (Bhabha, 1990c, p. 208).

Addressing this issue, this dissertation study considers the curriculum that appreciates cultural differences in recognizing the alterity of the culture of the other, emerged from the engagement in the tension existing between two cultures, of the Self and of the …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory research study examines changes in food and foodways (food habits) among Arab migrant families in a small community in Tampa, Florida. It also explores how those families’ children may play a role in the process of change. Within this community, I conducted my research study at a private school, where I recruited families with children between the ages of eight and seventeen. In applying the ecological model of food and nutrition and the developmental niche theoretical framework, this research draws on qualitative methods, including structured interviews with parents; focus group discussion with parents; a food survey; and children’s …

Mimola Or The Story Of A Casket, Antoine Innocent, Susan Kalter

Undiscovered Americas

Appearing for the first time in English, Antoine Innocent’s 1906 novel Mimola or the Story of a Casket weaves the story of Mimola, daughter of Madame Georges, who suffers from an incurable nervous disease, with an investigation of the traditions of Haitian Vodou. Desperate to end her daughter’s affliction, Madame Georges goes on a pilgrimage across Haiti to Ville-Bonheur to help her ailing daughter. Along the way, she meets a woman whose son, Léon, suffers from a similar disorder. Will their mothers’ devotion be enough to ensure the children’s recovery? Will the suffering Mimola and Léon embrace Vodou beliefs and …

The Uses Of Community In Modern American Rhetoric, Cody Ryan Hawley Jul 2018

The Uses Of Community In Modern American Rhetoric, Cody Ryan Hawley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the functions of the term “community” in American social and political rhetoric. I contend that community serves as a god-term, or expression of value and order, which rhetors use to motivate actions, endorse values, include/exclude persons, and compensate for modern losses. Informed by the philosophy of Kenneth Burke, I explore the general features of “rhetorics of community,” including community’s ambiguity and status as an automatic good, the relationship between community and modernity, the myth of communal loss, and the uses of community as a site of political unity and contest. I analyze the writings of John Humphrey …

Neural Basis Of Repetitive Negative Thinking In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Catherine Ann Burrows Jul 2018

Neural Basis Of Repetitive Negative Thinking In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Catherine Ann Burrows

Open Access Dissertations

Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience co-occurring internalizing problems, yet little is known about cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying this comorbidity. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) about self-referential information is a cognitive vulnerability factor across multiple diagnostic groups with well-characterized neurobiological underpinnings. Youth with ASD may be at heightened risk for RNT due to their perseverative cognitive style, which could account for the relationship between ASD and internalizing problems. This study investigates the interaction of brain networks involved in self-referential processing (i.e., the default mode network, DMN) and cognitive inflexibility (i.e., the salience network, SN) to confer increased risk …

Le Roman Policier Francophone : Entre Esthétique Et Politiques Du Genre En Afrique Et En Haïti, Lise Madeleine Mba Ekani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation, “Recasting Crime Fiction: The Francophone African and Haitian Crime Novel between Aesthetics and Politics”, investigates the social and literary meanings of the concept of politics as represented in African and Haitian crime novels. In this work, selected novels were examined considering their cultural, regional and linguistic particularities, as well as their perspectives on social criticism and politics. Drawing from fields such as sociocritical theory, philosophy, and history, this work allows for a more complex exploration of popular cultural productions while calling into question the literary genres. Consequently, it provides the opportunity to question cultural productions as an ideological …

We undertook a retrospective qualitative descriptive study of FGM/C cases seen in an asylum clinic over a 2-year period. Standardized questionnaires provided quantitative scores for anxiety, depression and PTSD. Clients’ personal and physician medical affidavits were analyzed for experiences of violence. Of the 13 cases, anxiety and depression were exhibited by 92 and 100% of women, while all seven women screened for PTSD had symptoms. Qualitative analysis revealed …

A Comparison Of Nano-Patterns Vs. Software Metrics In Vulnerability Prediction, Kazi Zakia Sultana, Byron J. Williams, Amiangshu Bosu Jul 2018

A Comparison Of Nano-Patterns Vs. Software Metrics In Vulnerability Prediction, Kazi Zakia Sultana, Byron J. Williams, Amiangshu Bosu

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Context: Software security is an imperative aspect of software quality. Early detection of vulnerable code during development can better ensure the security of the codebase and minimize testing efforts. Although traditional software metrics are used for early detection of vulnerabilities, they do not clearly address the granularity level of the issue to precisely pinpoint vulnerabilities. The goal of this study is to employ method-level traceable patterns (nano-patterns) in vulnerability prediction and empirically compare their performance with traditional software metrics. The concept of nano-patterns is similar to design patterns, but these constructs can be automatically recognized and extracted from source code. …

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper proposes an approach called TOLCS (Tweet Ordinance Linkage by Commonsense and Semantics) which helps connect specific ordinances or local laws to pertinent tweets expressing public reactions on them. TOLCS incorporates pragmatic aspects by commonsense knowledge, and semantic aspects by domain knowledge along with text similarity methods. It uses a blocking mechanism to reduce sample space for efficiently processing big data on ordinances and tweets.

Habeas Won And Lost: The Eleventh Circuit’S Narrow View Of State Court Judgments, Christina M. Frohock Jul 2018

Habeas Won And Lost: The Eleventh Circuit’S Narrow View Of State Court Judgments, Christina M. Frohock

University of Miami Law Review

The Eleventh Circuit vacated its panel opinion in Patterson v. Secretary and reheard the case en banc. The court’s new opinion revisits the prohibition against “second or successive” habeas corpus petitions in 28 U.S.C. § 2244(b) and embraces the dissenting view in the prior opinion, rejecting the reasoning of the majority. A new state court judgment resets the habeas clock, allowing a prisoner to file an additional federal habeas petition without running afoul of section 2244(b). Previously, the court offered an expansive view of such judgments, looking to whether the state court has substantively changed the prisoner’s sentence. The court …

Early Melodic Intonation Therapy For Post-Stroke Aphasia: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Faye Steiner Jul 2018

Early Melodic Intonation Therapy For Post-Stroke Aphasia: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Faye Steiner

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Stroke patients who lose the ability to produce language (aphasia) often remain able to sing. This observation has stimulated interest in a structured music therapy, Melodic Intonation Therapy, for post-stroke aphasia. While existing studies find positive outcomes with Melodic Intonation Therapy, its efficacy has yet to be substantiated by adequately powered, randomized, controlled trials. Focusing on acute stroke patients, we aim to determine the impact of melodic intonation therapy versus usual care on aphasia recovery. The study will be a single blind, randomized controlled trial with modified melodic intonation therapy and usual care groups. Aphasia severity will be scored at …

In this work, the stator winding of induction motor is fed through proposed five-level transformer-based symmetrical inverter, which consists of unidirectional and bidirectional switches, mid-point transformer and capacitors as voltage divider network to produce multilevel output voltage at the load side. The speed of the induction motor is varied by changing supply voltage of an induction motor by …

A Hierarchical Approach To Node Localization Based On Fuzzy System To Increase Network Lifetime In Wireless Sensor Networks, M. Karthiga, R. Venkatesan Jul 2018

A Hierarchical Approach To Node Localization Based On Fuzzy System To Increase Network Lifetime In Wireless Sensor Networks, M. Karthiga, R. Venkatesan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Energy efficiency is of utmost importance in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). A WSN that lives long proves to be more worthy for the effort and cost involved in establishing the network. The standards and protocols in aWSN are expected to be economical in their energy usage. Localization is one such important area, where much contribution has been made by the researchers to improve the accuracy and not much in increasing their energy efficiency. In this work, a hierarchical approach to increase energy efficiency during localization has been proposed. Existing localization approaches, irrespective of the node’s remaining energy levels, use a …

Inflo-Mation: A Model For Exploring Information Behavior Through Hip Hop, Kafi D. Kumasi Jul 2018

Inflo-Mation: A Model For Exploring Information Behavior Through Hip Hop, Kafi D. Kumasi

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper explores the insights that hip hop might afford young adult library researchers who study information behavior, particularly in online environments. A Critical Race Theory (CRT) approach was used to explain how existing information behavior models describe youth experiences in ways that mask their unique racialized experiences and culturally specific information-creating behaviors. Using CRT’s counter-storytelling method, a new model called INFLO-mation is introduced, featuring a continuum of information behaviors captured within three descriptive categories of creativity: Rhythm, Rhyme, and Remix (R3). Findings include a discussion the INFLO model, its classification scheme, and illustrative examples from contemporary teens’ …
