A Discouraging Omen: A Critical Evaluation Of The Approved Uniform Language For Testimony And Reports For The Forensic Latent Print Discipline, Simon A. Cole
Georgia State University Law Review
The theme of the 2018 Georgia State University Law Review symposium is the Future of Forensic Science Reform. In this Article, I will assess the prospects for reform through a critical evaluation of a document published in February 2018 by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), the Approved Uniform Language for Testimony and Reports for the Forensic Latent Print Discipline (ULTR).
I argue that this document provides reason to be concerned about the prospects of forensic science reform. In Part I, I discuss the background of the ULTR. In Part II, I undertake a critical evaluation of the ULTR. …

How Is Fanfiction Framed For Literacy Education Practitioner Periodical Audiences : Media Frame Analysis (2003 - 2013), Drew Emanuel Berkowitz
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This dissertation reports out the results from a socio-cultural media research study that examined how professional periodicals written for United States K-12 public school literacy educators described fanfiction-based recreational literacy practices between 2003 and 2013. In the first decade of the 21st century, many K-12 literacy scholars advocated for the adaptation of predominantly out-of-school literacy practices for use within US public school literacy instruction programs. During this period, some literacy researchers expressed concerns that teachers may have held incomplete or inaccurate conceptions of fan-based literacy practices such as fanfiction, to the detriment of their students and the literacy practices themselves. …

We conducted a multisite replication study with aspects of preregistration in order to explore the feasibility of such an approach in second language (L2) research. To this end, we addressed open questions in a line of research that has examined whether having learners attend to form while reading or listening to a L2 passage interferes with comprehension. Our results are consistent with findings from the specific paradigm that we replicated in that no effects on comprehension were detected in analyses conducted over all sites. However, further investigation is warranted due to site-specific effects and methodological limitations. We found all aspects …
The Relationship Between English Language Proficiency And Academic Achievement For English Language Learners, Laura Grisso
The Relationship Between English Language Proficiency And Academic Achievement For English Language Learners, Laura Grisso
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative correlational research study was to test the threshold hypothesis as it applied to the performance of English language learner students on the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test (OCCT) in third grade reading and the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English language learners assessment, also known as the ACCESS for ELLs. The OCCT assesses student performance on third grade reading content and the ACCESS for ELLs assesses the English language proficiency levels in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This study specifically proposed to analyze the relationship between the ACCESS for ELLs reading …

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
This report analyzes the potential economic impact of La Villa Hispana’s construction and operation proposed in the Clark‐Fulton neighborhood of Cleveland, the home to the densest population of Hispanic residents in the State of Ohio. We separately estimate the economic impact of El Mercado, one of the foundational projects of the La Villa Hispana development. The economic impacts are assessed on the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and the State of Ohio.
A Qualified Defense Of Qualified Immunity, Aaron L. Nielson, Christopher J. Walker
A Qualified Defense Of Qualified Immunity, Aaron L. Nielson, Christopher J. Walker
Notre Dame Law Review
In recent years, two new fronts of attack on qualified immunity have emerged. This Essay responds to both and provides a qualified defense of qualified immunity. Part I addresses Will Baude’s argument that qualified immunity finds no support in positive law. Part II turns to Joanna Schwartz’s pioneering empirical work that has been marshaled to question qualified immunity’s effectiveness as a matter of policy.
These two sets of criticisms—a one-two punch that qualified immunity is both unlawful and ineffective—merit serious consideration and further investigation. Neither, however, is dispositive; there are important counterpoints that merit further analysis. But ours is a …
Neural Collective Entity Linking, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu
Neural Collective Entity Linking, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Entity Linking aims to link entity mentions in texts to knowledge bases, and neural models have achieved recent success in this task. However, most existing methods rely on local contexts to resolve entities independently, which may usually fail due to the data sparsity of local information. To address this issue, we propose a novel neural model for collective entity linking, named as NCEL. NCEL applies Graph Convolutional Network to integrate both local contextual features and global coherence information for entity linking. To improve the computation efficiency, we approximately perform graph convolution on a subgraph of adjacent entity mentions instead of …
Reorienting The Rules Of Evidence, Gillian R. Chadwick
Reorienting The Rules Of Evidence, Gillian R. Chadwick
Cardozo Law Review
Latent heterosexism is deeply engrained in the common sensibility of the American legal system. In sexual assault cases, that latent heterosexism reveals itself in disparate admissibility rulings and practices regarding evidence that purports to demonstrate a defendant's sexual orientation. When defendant and victim are of the same gender, evidence that a defendant is straight is used to prove innocence, while evidence that a defendant is gay or bisexual is used to prove guilt. This evidence is used to advance narratives invoking anti-gay and anti-bisexual stereotypes of deviance and criminality. Similar arguments are not made in cases involving opposite-gender defendant and …
A Phonology Of Hill (Kone-Tu) Asho, Daniel Tignor
A Phonology Of Hill (Kone-Tu) Asho, Daniel Tignor
Theses and Dissertations
Asho (ISO 639-3: csh) is a Tibeto-Burman language in the Southern Chin branch of Kuki-Chin. It is spoken by about 170,000 people, primarily in western and west-central Myanmar (Simons & Fennig 2018). Although Asho received some early attention in the studies of Tibeto-Burman languages (Houghton 1892; Joorman 1906), it has remained mostly unstudied for the past century. Current data confirm the traditional distinction of two basic dialects of Asho (Hill and Plains), and this paper focuses on the Hill or "Kone-tu" dialect. The Hill dialect has 26 consonants (compared to 29 in the Plains dialect), and both dialects have 14 …
The Impact Of Translation On Constructed Action And Constructed Dialogue In Asl Texts, Beth C. Gray
The Impact Of Translation On Constructed Action And Constructed Dialogue In Asl Texts, Beth C. Gray
Theses and Dissertations
Depiction, a phenomenon similar to iconicity, involves representing what something "looks like or is like" (Streeck 2008:289). Because depiction is used more heavily in sign languages than spoken languages (Dudis 2007), people interpreting or translating spoken/written texts into signed languages struggle to use depiction naturally (Thumann 2011). This thesis analyzes constructed action (CA) and constructed dialogue (CD), two types of depiction in which the signer's hands represent those of a discourse participant. Using Tannen (1989) & Metzger's (1995) framework of non-directly-quoted CACD and Quinto-Pozos & Mehta's (2010) degrees of CA, I examine differences between narratives originally composed in ASL and …
Group Heterogeneity Influences Complex And Novel Outcomes, Belinda Williams
Group Heterogeneity Influences Complex And Novel Outcomes, Belinda Williams
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Research on diversity impacting group performance, especially creativity, has yielded varied, inconsistent outcomes. One initial issue that researchers face is identifying and measuring diversity within groups. Further, groups researchers have suggested that diversity is important when it is task-relevant; however, there is limited research on electronic groups working together over time to solve a creative problem. Additionally, the current body of research fails to address how specifically manipulated diversity impacts group performance over time. The current study aimed to address this gap in the literature by examining individuals assigned to heterogeneous or homogeneous groups. Participants were randomly assigned to these …
Barriers To Self-Sufficiency For Syrian Refugees After Resettlement, Alexi Ellen De Lathouder
Barriers To Self-Sufficiency For Syrian Refugees After Resettlement, Alexi Ellen De Lathouder
Social Work Theses - Archive
This case study serves as insight into the barriers to refugee self-sufficiency for resettled Syrians. An understanding of the refugee experience and obstacles faced after the initial resettlement period was developed through in-depth interviews of a resettled Syrian family in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Via case study and summative content analysis, the practicality of this population achieving self-sufficiency was analyzed. The results produced were compared with previous research to determine significance. The findings and discussion of language, finances, health, and social services resulted in implications for policy and further research regarding the Syrian refugee population.
The Rise Of Twitter In Presidential Communication: An Examination Of The Relationship Between President Trump's Twitter Feed And The Media Coverage Of His First 100 Days, Zedan Xu
Communication Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Donald Trump’s Twitter feed and the media coverage of Trump’s agenda expressed in his tweets during the “honeymoon period.” From the theoretical perspective of agenda setting theory, this research empirically explores the salience issues present in Trump’s Twitter postings and compare them to the media agenda. Descriptive statistics of Trump’s tweets and the coverage of his tweets from the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal show that nearly half of Trump’s Twitter posts are covered in the news media, indicating that Trump’s Twitter feed …

Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study is to explore the ethnic identity journey of 1.5 generation Asian American college students. The study seeks to answer how the ethnic identity perception of the 1.5 generation Asian American college students has transformed from arrival in the United States to present and how native and English language engagement as well as acculturation experiences have impacted the 1.5 generation Asian American college students’ perceptions of ethnic identity. The data for this study were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews with five Asian American college students who self-identify as 1.5 generation individuals or having …
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: The Need For Better Employment Eligibility Regulations, Gregory Crespi
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: The Need For Better Employment Eligibility Regulations, Gregory Crespi
Buffalo Law Review
A few people have now applied for and obtained tax-exempt debt forgiveness of their federal student Direct Loans under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program after satisfying the requirements of 10 years of post-October 1, 2007 employment in a “public service job.” While only a relatively small number of people have received debt forgiveness to date, I estimate that as the number of persons eligible ramps up sharply in 2018 and thereafter eventually 200,000 people a year or more will obtain debt forgiveness under the PSLF program, at a total cost to the Treasury of $12 billion per year …
The History, Meaning, And Use Of The Words Justice And Judge, Jason Boatright
The History, Meaning, And Use Of The Words Justice And Judge, Jason Boatright
St. Mary's Law Journal
The words justice and judge have similar meanings because they have a common ancestry. They are derived from the same Latin term, jus, which is defined in dictionaries as “right” and “law.” However, those definitions of jus are so broad that they obscure the details of what the term meant when it formed the words that eventually became justice and judge. The etymology of jus reveals the kind of right and law it signified was related to the concepts of restriction and obligation. Vestiges of this sense of jus survived in the meaning of justice and judge. …
Using Music And Movement To Enhance Cognitive Development, Bobbie Jo Pogue
Using Music And Movement To Enhance Cognitive Development, Bobbie Jo Pogue
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This literature review explores the research done in the use of music and movement in enhancing cognitive development, focusing mainly on the early childhood setting. The demand on preschool students has increased over the years and many even say preschool is the new kindergarten. For many years, young students have been taught through song, movement and actions, listening to music, and how to play an instrument. These are all interrelated to helping enhance a child’s cognitive development. Teachers tend to be so focused on just the academic part of teaching, even in preschool, that they forget the importance of music …
The Nature Of Influence: Fu'ad Rifqa's Wilderness Poetry At The Intersection Of Nation And Modernity, Delilah Clark
The Nature Of Influence: Fu'ad Rifqa's Wilderness Poetry At The Intersection Of Nation And Modernity, Delilah Clark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fundamental changes in the form and content of Arabic poetry occurred rapidly in the first half of the twentieth century, resulting in the development of free verse and prose poetry as well as the jettison of traditional requirements including end-stopped two-hemistich long lines, strict adherence to meter, and monorhyme. These changes draw from innovation within Arabic poetry, competing nationalist agendas, increased translation of European texts into Arabic, and the productive engagement of Arab poets with Western literatures. In 1957, Syrian poet Fu’ād Rifqa embarks upon a five-decade poetic project of intentional intertextuality that acknowledges these sometimes collaborative, sometimes competing narratives. …
Paulo Coelho: Transnational Literature, Popular Culture, And Postmodernism, Anna Pavlova Murta
Paulo Coelho: Transnational Literature, Popular Culture, And Postmodernism, Anna Pavlova Murta
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With over 350 million books sold worldwide in more than 80 languages, Paulo Coelho is an international literary phenomenon that moves “beyond culture of origin” (Damrosch 199) and inhabits the “world literary space” (Pascale 281). Would his novels, therefore, stand as materialization of Goethe’s humanist cosmopolitan vision upon the coinage of the term world literature? Many cultural scholars would argue to the contrary. This dissertation aims at exploring Coelho narratives and their popularity and controversial reception by contextualizing them within the contemporary scholarship on World Literature and within the global cultural economy.
An underlying assumption of this Cultural Studies approach …
American Foreign Policy Has A Masculinity Problem: A Discourse Analysis Of The Iran Deal, Rachel Emond
American Foreign Policy Has A Masculinity Problem: A Discourse Analysis Of The Iran Deal, Rachel Emond
Honors Theses
The research in this paper seeks to analyze the rhetoric surrounding issues of American foreign policy using the Iran Deal as a case study. The main question this research intends to answer is: Are suggested soft power policy solutions, such as that of the Iran Deal, characterized as either feminine or masculine? I seek to answer this question through a discourse analysis of the rhetoric in newspaper articles from The New York Times and The Washington Post about the Iran Deal from the year 2015. I identify common themes and phrases among these articles and draw my own conclusions about …

Building Successful P-3 Initiatives: Foundations And Catalysts For Systems Change, Lindsey Brianna Patterson, Beth L. Green, Callie H. Lambarth, Mackenzie Burton, Diane Reid
Early Childhood
Across the United States, there is a growing recognition that early education and K-12 systems require transformative changes to address racial, ethnic, linguistic and economic disparities in school readiness and success.
Prenatal-through-Grade-3 (P-3) initiatives address these disparities by coordinating, strengthening and aligning fragmented support systems for families and children from birth through third grade.
These increasingly popular initiatives:
- Are based on accumulating evidence that standalone early childhood and school-based programs are not sufficient to sustain long-term success for children facing early childhood inequities
- Take a collective impact approach that brings families, early childhood providers, K-12 staff and other partners together …
Testing And Ideology: Policy Debates About Literacy Assessments For Colorado’S Bilingual Students, Luis E. Poza, Kara Mitchell Viesca
Testing And Ideology: Policy Debates About Literacy Assessments For Colorado’S Bilingual Students, Luis E. Poza, Kara Mitchell Viesca
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The Colorado Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act requires grade-level attainment in literacy in English for students in grades K-3. Its practical outcome, however, has been to pressure schools with bilingual programs to shift their instructional language allocations towards more English in the early grades. Proposed rule revisions debated by the state Board of Education sought to facilitate testing in students’ language of instruction for those in bilingual programs. Analysis of written and verbal opposition to the proposed rule revisions demonstrates the persistence of insidious ethnoculturalist discourses opposing bilingual education as well as the cooptation of liberal multiculturalist discourses that, …
That Said, Karl Alderic Schroeder
That Said, Karl Alderic Schroeder
All NMU Master's Theses
That Said, a creative thesis of poetry and poetics in two parts, explores points of contact between human interaction, capitalism, consciousness, and the process of meaning itself. The collection appropriates the language of business, scholarship, and politics alongside philosophical substructures from such disparate traditions as Marxism, Existentialism, and Taoism to provide a several windows of perspective into anxiety, relationships, identity, and consumerism. Through the blending of both direct and experimental forms and processes, nontraditional and everyday diction and syntax, and multifaceted content of both personal and external significance, these poems may simultaneously amuse, alienate, and inspire philosophical and critical …

Intellectual Philanthropy: The Seduction Of The Masses, Aurélie Vialette
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Intellectual Philanthropy: The Seduction of the Masses by Aurélie Vialette examines the practice of philanthropy in modern Spain. Through detailed studies of popular music, collective readings, dramas, working-class manuals, and fiction, Vialette reveals how depictions of urban philanthropic activities can inform our understanding of interactions in the economic, cultural, religious, and educational spheres, class power dynamics, and gender roles in urban Spanish society.
Daily Oral Language, The Bell Tolls For Thee: A Critique Of Daily Sentence-Editing Exercises, Karen Pezzetti
Daily Oral Language, The Bell Tolls For Thee: A Critique Of Daily Sentence-Editing Exercises, Karen Pezzetti
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
For decades, experts have argued that effective grammar instruction must occur within the context of students’ authentic reading and writing processes. Despite this mandate, however, many teachers continue to use daily sentence-editing exercises like Daily Oral Language (DOL) with their secondary ELA students. Here, I argue that ELA teachers must abandon daily-sentence editing routines on three counts: first, these exercises do not help students become better writers; second, they implicitly communicate several dangerous messages about writing and revision; and, third, they are particularly harmful for speakers of stigmatized dialects of English. The article concludes with a short list of guiding …
Embedding Wordnet Knowledge For Textual Entailment, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Embedding Wordnet Knowledge For Textual Entailment, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we study how we can improve a deep learning approach to textual entailment by incorporating lexical entailment relations from WordNet. Our idea is to embed the lexical entailment knowledge contained in WordNet in specially-learned word vectors, which we call “entailment vectors.” We present a standard neural network model and a novel set-theoretic model to learn these entailment vectors from word pairs with known lexical entailment relations derived from WordNet. We further incorporate these entailment vectors into a decomposable attention model for textual entailment and evaluate the model on the SICK and the SNLI dataset. We find that …
Computational Thinking Unplugged: Comparing The Impact On Confidence And Competence From Analog And Digital Resources In Computer Science Professional Development For Elementary Teachers, Christopher Harris
Education Doctoral
The demand for computer science instruction is increasing across the K-12 spectrum, but in many cases elementary teachers are ill prepared to teach the subject. Based on prior research showing a preference for analog interfaces, this study compared the impact of analog and digital interface modalities on teachers’ confidence and competence gains in professional development on computational thinking conceived within the framework of cognitive acceleration. The analog group used the Robot Turtles board game and the digital group used the Scratch Jr. app on iPads while receiving the same professional development content. A single-case experimental design approach with a multiple-baseline …
