Priming Sentence Comprehension In Older Adults, Emily Hosokawa
Priming Sentence Comprehension In Older Adults, Emily Hosokawa
Open Access Theses
Syntactic priming is thought to reflect ongoing language learning processes throughout the life span. However, little is known on if and how the mechanisms of syntactic priming change in aging. This study examined whether syntactic priming influences sentence comprehension in healthy older adults and whether such effects occur independently of, or in conjunction with, lexically specific (verb) information. We further examined if older adults show persisting priming effects. Twenty older adults completed a written sentence-picture matching task involving the interpretation of prepositional phrases (the chef is poking the solider with an umbrella) that were ambiguous between high and low attachment …

How Colonization Impacts Identity Through The Generations: A Closer Look At Historical Trauma And Education, Michelle Garcia-Olp
How Colonization Impacts Identity Through The Generations: A Closer Look At Historical Trauma And Education, Michelle Garcia-Olp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Through the lived experiences of 26 New Mexicans, this inquiry investigates how colonization impacts identity through the generations, particularly looking at historical trauma and education. The findings demonstrate the importance of decolonizing spaces within educational settings. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate the need for viewing educational systems and spaces through a Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit) and Indigenous Storywork lens that lead Indigenous students in finding face (one’s identity), finding foundation (one’s greatest potential/full expression) and finding heart (one’s flow with the creator). The lens of TribalCrit enables the creation of a space where Indigenous students are empowered by their educational …

Adventures With Don Quixote: Examination And Treatment, Katarzyna Bator
Art Conservation Master's Projects
The third edition of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha from the collection of University at Buffalo Library was examined and treated. A proposed timeline of repairs was constructed based on information gathered through historical research, multiband imaging, x-radiography, and microscopy. The analysis identified at least four possible sewing events and revealed differences in fiber morphology of the papers composing the textblock. The study of past interventions guided the current conservation treatment. Old repairs were kept intact where possible, and the textblock was rebound in a conservation style hybrid structure that resembles the current …
Surface Treatments On Clay And Making Meaning, Stephanie Lynn Schmidt
Surface Treatments On Clay And Making Meaning, Stephanie Lynn Schmidt
Action Research Projects
This is a student centered art-based research project that explores surface treatments on clay and how they may influence creativity and making meaning. It involved me introducing more surface treatments that are alternatives to glazes into my high school classroom. I wanted to broaden my own knowledge as well as provide more opportunities for my students so they would feel a greater sense of choice, power, and meaning in their artwork. This process forced me to learn about materials, open up to the unknown, and release power to the students. It was a rewarding experience that will forever make an …

Formalism, Ferguson, And The Future Of Qualified Immunity, Fred O. Smith Jr.
Formalism, Ferguson, And The Future Of Qualified Immunity, Fred O. Smith Jr.
Notre Dame Law Review
This Essay explores whether formalism and accountability are compatible lodestars as we steer toward a new future for qualified immunity. Ultimately, I argue that two existing proposals would bring the doctrine closer to its text and history, mitigate against fragmentation in the law of constitutional torts, and narrow the rights-remedies gap when government officials violate the Constitution. One proposal, by John Jeffries, would create a fault-based system, where government officials and entities alike would be liable for constitutional violations that are both unreasonable and unconstitutional. Another proposal would render governmental employers’ liable for the acts of their agents.
The Absolutist Monarch In Taïa's Le Jour Du Roi And Laroui's "Tu N'As Rien Compris À Hassan Ii": Probing The Limitations Of Reader Reception Theory, Christa Jones
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This article discusses the representation of the monarch in Abdellah Taïa’s novel Le Jour du Roi (2010) and Fouad Laroui’s “Tu n’as rien compris à Hassan II” (2004), focusing on the act of reading and the historical context of Hassan II’s reign. A close reading of Taïa’s novel and Laroui’s short story will reveal narrative strategies used to fictionalize sovereignty. Laroui uses humor and irony to criticize the regime of Hassan II, while Taïa uses oneiric elements to capture the arbitrary nature of monarchy and the notion of absolute royal power as theorized by Achille Mbembe. Both writers criticize Hassan …
Female Cross-Dressing And Fragile Masculinity In Le Roman De Silence And Twelfth Night, Nicole Robilotta
Female Cross-Dressing And Fragile Masculinity In Le Roman De Silence And Twelfth Night, Nicole Robilotta
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores how fragile masculinity has been portrayed in Medieval and Renaissance literature by analyzing the impact of female-crossing dressing on male characters in Heldris of Cornwall’s Le Roman de Silence and William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. In the 13th century French Romance that centers on the debate between nature and nurture, Silence is a female raised as a male to circumvent patrilineal inheritance laws who becomes a celebrated knight. In Twelfth Night, Viola cross-dresses as Cesario, an act that results in the unintentional winning of Olivia’s love as well as confused (and ultimately resolved) romantic feelings from Count Orsino. …
The Discovery Of Merlin’S Spirit Within The Trinity Of Robert De Boron’S Le Roman De L’Estorie Dou Graal, Diane Higgins
The Discovery Of Merlin’S Spirit Within The Trinity Of Robert De Boron’S Le Roman De L’Estorie Dou Graal, Diane Higgins
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Before I wrote about Robert de Boron’s text, a purpose of this paper was to examine the literary background of Merlin’s character to search for his connection with any mystical powers, which would validate his commanding role as a facilitator in Robert’s Merlin section of his romance, a role in which I claim he has been given the powers of the Holy Trinity by God. I also wanted to explore the history of cauldrons and other ancient vessels to link determine if I could find any literary base to the Grail Robert assigns to Jesus Christ. I wanted to further …

Gist Of A Gest: Learning Gestures For The First Time, Maria Eugenia Cabrera Ubaldi
Gist Of A Gest: Learning Gestures For The First Time, Maria Eugenia Cabrera Ubaldi
Open Access Dissertations
Humans are able to understand meaning intuitively and generalize from a single observation, as opposed to machines which require several examples to learn and recognize a new physical expression. This trait is one of the main roadblocks in natural human-machine interaction. Particularly, in gestures which are an intrinsic part of human communication. In the aim of natural interaction with machines, a framework must be developed to include the adaptability humans portray to understand gestures from a single observation. This problem is known as one-shot gesture recognition, and it has been researched previously. Nevertheless, most approaches rely heavily on purely numerical …
Pathology Or Neurodiversity?: Cognitive Accessibility And The Rhetorical Construction Of Adhd In Higher Education, Samuel James Dunn
Pathology Or Neurodiversity?: Cognitive Accessibility And The Rhetorical Construction Of Adhd In Higher Education, Samuel James Dunn
Open Access Dissertations
It is estimated that 2-8% of college students (approximately 1 in 20) report clinically significant diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Typically, those with verifiable diagnoses of ADHD are eligible to receive certain accommodations through the university which, in theory, put them on even footing with their peers; however there has been very little research done to actively address the needs of these students in the context of the composition classroom itself. To address this gap, in this dissertation I discuss the rhetorical positioning and identity construction of ADHD in the contemporary American university and ways in which composition …

Detecting Popularity Of Ideas And Individuals In Online Community, Chien-Yi Hsiang
Open Access Dissertations
Research in the last decade has prioritized the effects of online texts and online behaviors on user information prediction. However, the previous research overlooks the overall meaning of online texts and more detailed features about users’ online behaviors. The purpose of the research is to detect the adopted ideas, the popularity of ideas, and the popularity of individuals by identifying the overall meaning of online texts and the centrality features based on user’s online interactions within an online community.
To gain insights into the research questions, the online discussions on MyStarbucksIdea website is examined in this research. MyStarbucksIdea had launched …

Career development is a lifelong process that begins in childhood and has been linked to student success in other aspects of their development in childhood and adulthood (Blackhurst, Auger, & Wahl, 2003). This article presents a fifth-grade technology-based career development curriculum that engages students in a 10-week long exploration of interests, skills, college degrees and careers, and culminates with students creating career trifold display boards and presenting them to community members. School counselors can use this career exploration unit to support students’ career development and to begin the lifelong process of preparing them for success in the world of work.
Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Wanli Xing, Fei Gao
Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Wanli Xing, Fei Gao
Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications
Educators show great interest in participating in social-media communities, such as Twitter, to support their professional development and learning. The majority of the research into Twitter-based professional learning communities has investigated why educators choose to use Twitter for professional development and learning and what they actually do in these communities. However, few studies have examined why certain community members remain committed and others gradually drop out. To fill this gap in the research, this study investigated how some key features of online discourse influenced the continued participation of the members of a Twitter-based professional learning community. More than 600,000 tweets …
Guided Data Fusion, Romila Pradhan
Guided Data Fusion, Romila Pradhan
Open Access Dissertations
While the volume and variety of data furnished by disparate data sources has rocketed over the years, often there is little to no restraint over the quality of data available on the Internet; data sources often provide conflicting information for the same data item (a real-world entity or event).
Recent years have witnessed a number of data fusion systems that propose solutions to consolidate multiple instances of a data item, distinguish correct from incorrect information and present a unified, consistent and meaningful record to users. Most of these fusion systems are focused on automatically identifying correct information for data items. …
Asset-Based Teaching And Learning With Diverse Learners In Postsecondary Settings, Erika L. Mein
Asset-Based Teaching And Learning With Diverse Learners In Postsecondary Settings, Erika L. Mein
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The demographic composition of students in U.S. institutions of higher education is rapidly shifting. We know that 21st century learners are more digitally adept and more socially, economically, and culturally/linguistically diverse than at any moment historically. The The University of Texas at El Paso's (UTEP) student body reflects these broader demographic changes taking place nationwide: more than 80% of UTEP students are Latina/o, with the majority identifying as bilingual; more than 50% of students are the first in their families to attend college; and roughly half of students are Pell-eligible (e.g., many of whom have annual family incomes of less …
Teaching Elsewhere: Curating↔Calibrating Posthumanist Possibilities, Sarah Alice Shelton
Teaching Elsewhere: Curating↔Calibrating Posthumanist Possibilities, Sarah Alice Shelton
English Dissertations - Archive
Following the material and ontological turns and working within the recent conversation applying posthumanist theory to education and educational research, this dissertation argues that professors can materialize immediate, critical differences for our students—open up different possibilities for their knowing-in-being than the ones imposed on us by a humanist education system—by “teaching elsewhere” even while staying within the college classroom spaces (designed to be “anywhere”) we’re assigned. Such a posthumanist praxis or pedagogy relies on Karen Barad’s agential realism to see “the classroom” as the entire spacetimemattering of a particular phenomenon brought together through a mixture of choices and impositions into …
Stem Success For All: High School Teachers’ Perceptions And Practice Of Culturally Relevant Education In Science And Math Classes, Stephanie Boyce
Stem Success For All: High School Teachers’ Perceptions And Practice Of Culturally Relevant Education In Science And Math Classes, Stephanie Boyce
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
The lack of participation of historically underrepresented groups (i.e., Hispanics, Blacks, and women) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a serious issue in the United States. Despite the intentional efforts at increasing STEM participation, Black and Hispanic high school students graduate significantly less prepared for college-level mathematics and science than their White counterparts. As a result, they are more likely to underachieve in college and inadvertently continue the cycle of STEM underrepresentation in college. Using an anti-deficit perspective, this study explored a single high school science and math department’s teachers’ perceptions about Culturally Relevant Education (CRE) practices as …

Taking "Great Care": Defining Victims Of Hate Speech Targeting Religious Minorities, Whittney Barth
Taking "Great Care": Defining Victims Of Hate Speech Targeting Religious Minorities, Whittney Barth
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Comment explores the intersection of race and religion in cases brought before the Human Rights Committee alleging violations of Article 20(2) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This article proposes a positive requirement for states parties to prohibit hate speech. Specifically, the following analysis considers Committee determinations of standing in cases brought by Muslims living in Europe who sought to challenge a state party's response to discriminatory remarks made by public figures. This Comment argues that these determinations, which appear to implicitly endorse a lower threshold for group standing when both race and religion are under …
Religion And Resiliency Among Female Afghan Special Immigrant Visa Holders, Sahil K. Gilani
Religion And Resiliency Among Female Afghan Special Immigrant Visa Holders, Sahil K. Gilani
Social Work Theses - Archive
This thesis analyzed the relationship between the religiosity of four newly-arrived female Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders in the Dallas area and its impact on their resiliency, coping, and outlook on their new lives in the United States. The research was conducted through a phenomenological qualitative approach, which allowed the researcher to capture the lived experiences, feelings, and meanings that female SIVs attach to certain phenomena in their social environment (Husserl, 2012). The study hoped to add to the existing evidence-based research and knowledge on the efficacy, or lack thereof, of using religion as a coping mechanism.
Prosodic Phonology In Oklahoma Cherokee, Samantha Cornelius
Prosodic Phonology In Oklahoma Cherokee, Samantha Cornelius
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation, I provide an analysis for word level prosody in Cherokee, a Southern Iroquoian language spoken in Northeastern Oklahoma and Western North Carolina. Focusing on Cherokee as it is spoken in Oklahoma, I analyze right edges of Cherokee words, showing that the boundary tone is predictable, though its distribution is conditioned by lexical tonal phonology and other word-final phenomena. In order to account for the distribution of the boundary tone, I must first provide an analysis of lexical tone in Cherokee. There have been previous comprehensive tone analyses (Lindsey 1985; Wright 1996; Uchihara 2013), which argue for a …

Uncertain Certainties: An Analysis Of The American Response To The 2014-2016 West African Ebola Epidemic., Kelly Carty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project examines the construction of scientific facts surrounding the 2014-2016 West African Ebola outbreak as well as the subsequent uptake and transformation of those facts by the United States government. While the Ebolavirus ravaged the communities of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea, the incidence of the virus in other countries was very low. Nonetheless, the United States spent $576 million on domestic preparedness and response. This study addresses this mismatch in the context of the reinvigorated interest among rhetoricians into writing and science. Applying and expanding the methodology of Jeanne Fahnestock, this study analyzes Ebola-related statements in scientific articles, …

A Complicated Peace: Nationalism And Antisemitism In Interwar Poland, Joanna Dobrowolska
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis examines the roots of antisemitic rhetoric expressed by Polish nationalists between 1918 and 1939. I argue that nationalist rhetoric and political campaigns during this period focused on calling for Poles to defend themselves against Jewish economic and political domination. The first half of this work utilizes pamphlets, books, newspaper articles, and other written works wherein Polish nationalists, in particular members of the National Democratic Party(NDP), expressed a fear of Polish Jews and called for their eviction from the country. Fear that Poland, a country that had been partitioned by surrounding empires for the past two centuries, would not …
Changes In Cultural Capital For Native English And Native Spanish-Speaking Families' Children Who Do And Do Not Participate In An Elementary Spanish Dual Immersion Program, Allen Smithee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study is framed in Bourdieu’s theory of capital, which asserts that the choices we make are usually designed to help us become better off economically; that economic capital is, to some degree, exchangeable with other types of capital (e.g., social and cultural); and that other types of capital can be exchanged for economic capital. The purpose of this study was to understand which forms of capital native English-speaking and native Spanish-speaking families believed they would acquire by choosing to participate in or not participate in Spanish dual language immersion.
In this study I interviewed four native Spanish-speaking students who …

Instructional Support For Vocabulary Acquisition Among Young Dual Language Learners, Theresa L. Kohlmeier
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation examined a combined approach to teach novel vocabulary in English and Spanish for dual language learners prior to an English storybook read- aloud in a preschool setting. The 6-week intervention study was conducted in a Head Start program in the U. S. Mountain West with 60 dual-language preschoolers randomly assigned to small groups to receive the vocabulary intervention, using images and word definitions from researcher-trained teachers, teacher assistants or parent volunteers.
The experimental design included pre- and posttest assessments of target and general receptive vocabulary in English and Spanish, as well as language exposure, instructional quality, and fidelity …
