The Urban Food Desert As A Model For The Urban Health Care Desert: Fundamental Causes And Economic Considerations, Estevan A. Garcia
The Urban Food Desert As A Model For The Urban Health Care Desert: Fundamental Causes And Economic Considerations, Estevan A. Garcia
Dissertations and Theses
Introduction: A “health care desert” is a part of the country where needed medical, behavioral, mental, dental, and/or pharmaceutical health care services are extremely limited or altogether unavailable. This terminology is based on the concept of a “food desert,” which describes an area where people have limited access to affordable and healthy foods, and which, together with the negative health consequences of eating lower-quality foods, is well described in public health literature. The application of this terminology to an urban environment with ready access to transportation has been limited and is controversial. However, the recent increase in urban hospital closures …
Investigating Gender Assignment Strategies In Mixed Purepecha–Spanish Nominal Constructions, Kate Bellamy, M. Carmen Parafita Couto, Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez
Investigating Gender Assignment Strategies In Mixed Purepecha–Spanish Nominal Constructions, Kate Bellamy, M. Carmen Parafita Couto, Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez
Faculty Publications
Purepecha has no grammatical gender, whereas Spanish has a binary masculine–feminine system. In this paper we investigate how early sequential Purepecha–Spanish bilinguals assign gender to Purepecha nouns inserted into an otherwise Spanish utterance, using a director-matcher production task and an online forced-choice acceptability judgement task. The results of the production task indicate a strong preference for masculine gender, irrespective of the gender of the noun’s translation equivalent, the so-called “masculine default” option. Participants in the comprehension task were influenced by the orthography of the Purepecha noun in the -a ending condition, leading them to assign feminine gender agreement to nouns …

Counter-Narratives And Jonas Hassen Khemiri’S Play Invasion!: Storytelling That Fractures The Orientalist Narrative, Anna Christina Bahow
Counter-Narratives And Jonas Hassen Khemiri’S Play Invasion!: Storytelling That Fractures The Orientalist Narrative, Anna Christina Bahow
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the counter-narratives Jonas Hassen Khemiri constructs to challenge Orientalism in his play INVASION! Khemiri’s use of oppositional narratives and disidentification challenges the narrow confines of Middle Eastern/Arab stereotypes by using story and performance to decenter the White Western lens. By examining the context of Swedishness from which Khemiri’s work grows, the construct of the Orientalized Other, and the play itself, this thesis demonstrates how Khemiri disrupts systemic racism and creates a stage, both literally and figuratively, to address race and national identity in Sweden and, by implication, in the United States. I show how the storytelling in …
Teacher Talk Patterns In Classroom Interaction In English At A Tamil Primary School / Tisha Nair Balakrishnan, Balakrishnan Tisha Nair
Teacher Talk Patterns In Classroom Interaction In English At A Tamil Primary School / Tisha Nair Balakrishnan, Balakrishnan Tisha Nair
Student Works (2010-2019)
Teacher talk is the speech pattern used by teachers in organising and managing their classrooms. Teacher talk is not only a means for teachers to do this as they administer their classes, it is also the major source of comprehensible target language input for L2 acquisition. Therefore, it is an important aspect to focus on in language teaching. This study analyses the patterns of teacher talk in the classroom interactions of two English teaching teachers who were based in one Tamil primary school. The study uses video recording and classroom observation to collect data while teacher talk patterns were classified …

The Plot To Overthrow Genocide: State Laws Mandating Education About The Foulest Crime Of All
The Plot To Overthrow Genocide: State Laws Mandating Education About The Foulest Crime Of All
Marquette Law Review
This Article shines a light on a little noticed phenomenon in American law: the promulgation of ten state statutes and one state regulation, each requiring education about genocide in elementary and/or secondary schools. The mandates, adopted from 1989 through 2018, appear to be only the beginning inasmuch as in 2017 another nineteen states publicly pledged to pass such mandates as well.
The Article describes each of the existing mandates and compares them to each other, including an analysis of the laws’ respective strong and weak points. This exposition, of interest in itself, also sets the stage for proposals to improve …

Remix The Medieval Manuscript: Experiments With Digital Infrastructure, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren, Baylauris Byrnesim
Dartmouth Library Staff Publications
Remix the Manuscript: A Chronicle of Digital Experiments is a collaborative research project that takes up this challenge. It brings together academics, librarians, technologists, conservators, and students to study the many permutations of a single manuscript—a fifteenth-century Middle English prose chronicle of Great Britain, commonly referred to as the “Prose Brut.” Our project raises fundamental questions about the digital research environment. How is today’s code configuring tomorrow’s historical knowledge? How do digital technologies affect our access to and understanding of material culture? By investigating these broad questions through the example of one manuscript, we define a limited yet infinitely …

Bridging Theory To Practice: Utilizing The Culture-Centered Approach (Cca) To Address Gaps In Community Based Participatory Research (Cbpr) Processes, Sydney Dillard, Agaptus Anaele, Rati Kumar, Raihan Jamil
All Works
The purpose of this study is to provide recommendations to bridging the "theoretical" with the "practical" in developing community-based participatory research (CBPR) health communication projects. As illustrated through a review of several case studies from health campaigns using CBPR, often times the theoretical orientations of CBPR become secondary to its praxis, with unspoken motives and agendas become motivating factors in guiding the initiatives. These motives may come in the form of funding organization priorities, funded grant proposal constraints, and the desire to continue relationships that are fostered in the development of CBPR projects. In response, this essay reintroduces the culture-centered …

Performing Stereotypical Tropes On Social Media Sites: How Popular Latina Performers Reinscribe Heteropatriarchy On Instagram, Ariana Arely Cano
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This research analyzed three Latina social media celebrities’ self-presentations on Instagram and focused on whether or not the content they published potentially challenges or simply perpetuates stereotypical tropes of Latinas found in mainstream media. This qualitative study took an Ideological Critical approach through a textual analysis that was informed by Feminist Theory. More specifically the research focused on: What were Latina social media celebrities self-presentations on Instagram that characterize what a Latina is? How were Latina social media celebrities self-presentations different from or similar to, mainstream stereotypical tropes for Latinas? Lastly, how do the Latina social media celebrities’ self-presentations compare …
Graphic Mathematical Mediated Structure: The Link For Hispanic/Latino And English Learners' Mathematical Success, Sylvia Casteloes
Graphic Mathematical Mediated Structure: The Link For Hispanic/Latino And English Learners' Mathematical Success, Sylvia Casteloes
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This project’s goal is to promote and improve the mathematical literacy of fourth-grade Hispanic/Latino and English learners through the use of a graphic mathematical mediated structure. Current California Common Core data finds fourth-grade Hispanic/Latino and English learners significantly behind White and Asian students in mathematics, especially in understanding written word problems.
Research supports the assumption that as a tool, a graphic mathematical mediated structure could: 1) foster conceptual understanding; 2) build content terminology; 3) allow students opportunities to justify their solutions; 4) integrate writing in math; and 5) provide a platform for discourse. This innovative pedagogical project specifically focused on …

Environmental health and public health are profoundly local. The Association of Environmental Health Academic Programs (AEHAP) firmly agrees and for this reason, it is important to have local environmental health experts who know the pulse of their communities. AEHAP believes in supporting the advanced scientific education of environmental health in these communities through people from these communities. Accordingly, AEHAP has sought to promote and support accredited environmental health programs among a diverse cross-section of the U.S. higher education landscape. AEHAP’s students are diverse in many ways, including socioeconomically, racially, ethnically, and culturally. The value of this approach enhances the overall …

Topic Modeling The President: Conventional And Computational Methods, J.B. Ruhl, John Nay, Jonathan Gilligan
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Legal and policy scholars modeling direct actions into substantive topic classifications thus far have not employed computational methods. To compare the results of their conventional modeling methods with the computational method, we generated computational topic models of all direct actions over time periods other scholars have studied using conventional methods, and did the same for a case study of environmental-policy direct actions. Our computational model of all direct actions closely matched one of the two comprehensive empirical models developed using conventional methods. By contrast, our environmental-case-study model differed markedly from the only empirical topic model of environmental-policy direct actions using …
Religious Literacies As Social Practice: A Latterday Saint Perspective, Eric D. Rackley
Religious Literacies As Social Practice: A Latterday Saint Perspective, Eric D. Rackley
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Although we are learning more about how young people make sense of religious truths, there is a conspicuous dearth of research examining the meaning-making practices of Latter-day Saint youth. As a result, it is unclear, for example, how Latter-day Saint youth read scripture. What’s working for them? What’s not? How do we know? “Faith without understanding” may be the sardonic standard for religious literacy in the United States, but I am confident that in the Church we can do better. We can help youth develop faith and understanding. Without a clearly articulated conception of religious literacy, however, the Church may …
Historic Look On Color Theory, Steele R. Stokley
Historic Look On Color Theory, Steele R. Stokley
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
The science of color is called chromatics, colorimetry, or color science. This field of science includes the perception of color by the human eye, origin of colors, art theory, therapy, the psychics of electromagnetic radiation, and effects on the brain (Azeemi). Experts throughout time have desired to decipher the composition of color to explain how and why humans are able to see colors in order to use them in numerous disciplines; from scientific to artistic. While color has been studied since ancient times, the technical workings and the modern understandings of color theory are difficult to comprehend, and one wishes …
Tradition As Innovation: Dialect Revalorization And Maximal Orthographic Distinction In Rural Norwegian Writing, Thea R. Strand
Tradition As Innovation: Dialect Revalorization And Maximal Orthographic Distinction In Rural Norwegian Writing, Thea R. Strand
Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In rural Valdres, Norway, the traditional regional dialect, called Valdresmål, has become an important resource for popular style and local development projects. Stigmatized through much of the twentieth century for its association with poor, rural, “backward” farmers and culture, Valdresmål has been thoroughly revalorized, with particularly high status among local youth and those involved in business and tourism. While today’s parents and grandparents attest to historical pressures to adopt normative urban linguistic forms, many in Valdres now proclaim dialect pride and have re-embraced spoken Valdresmål in various forms of public, interdialectal communication. In addition, Valdres natives also make abundant and …

Intercultural Now?: A Japanese Short-Term Study Abroad Experience, Kevin J. Ottoson
All Theses And Dissertations
This phenomenological study investigated the lived experience of seven Japanese university students who participated in short-term study abroad programs in Southeast Asia. The seven participants were a part of groups of twenty-four Japanese students who studied the local language and conducted fieldwork projects with local university students in Thailand or Malaysia. Results of this study showed that four themes emerged across each case’s description of his or her short-term study abroad experience: (a) recognizing, (b) interacting, (c) developing, and (d) maintaining. Furthermore, the analysis revealed participants described development in their attitudes, knowledge, and ability to relate and interact across cultures. …

Past studies of the pulsing dynamism of the Chartist movement and its poets active between 1838-1848 have either ignored print trade workers or categorised them as members of the 'labour aristocracy': privileged, skilled, conservative figures at one remove from class based struggles, intent on protecting trade guild privileges. Yet, creative compositor poets did utilise their talents to engage with issues of social reform, welfare, educational aspirations and civic nationalism subsequent to the ebbing of Chartist inspired creative writing. Poetry featured in Scottish print trade journals of the mid-to late-nineteenth century …

Seodang: A Pilgrimage Toward Knowledge/Action And "Us-Ness" In The Community, Seungho Moon
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this article is to present a Korean theory of epistemology and to provide an epistemological embodiment of Korean epistemology as it appears in a traditional, local village school called a seodang. A seodang’s curriculum is grounded upon individualized instruction and whole person education and emphasizes mutually respectful relationships that sustain supportive local communities. I have attempted to create an intersection between cultural elements present within Korea’s indigenous knowledge and innovative research methodology by making use of multilingual representations, visual interpretations of the text, and cultural poetry. By weaving together these two stripes of epistemology and methodology, I …

Domain-Specific Knowledge Exploration With Ontology Hierarchical Re-Ranking And Adaptive Learning And Extension, Grace G. Zhao
Domain-Specific Knowledge Exploration With Ontology Hierarchical Re-Ranking And Adaptive Learning And Extension, Grace G. Zhao
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The goal of this research project is the realization of an artificial intelligence-driven lightweight domain knowledge search framework that returns a domain knowledge structure upon request with highly relevant web resources via a set of domain-centric re-ranking algorithms and adaptive ontology learning models. The re-ranking algorithm, a necessary mechanism to counter-play the heterogeneity and unstructured nature of web data, uses augmented queries and a hierarchical taxonomic structure to get further insight into the initial search results obtained from credited generic search engines. A semantic weight scale is applied to each node in the ontology graph and in turn generates a …
Vowel Production In Down Syndrome: An Ultrasound Study, Micalle Carl
Vowel Production In Down Syndrome: An Ultrasound Study, Micalle Carl
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The present study investigated the articulatory and acoustic characteristics of vowel production in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Speech production deficits and reduced intelligibility are consistently noted in this population, attributed to any combination of phonological, structural, and/or motor control deficits. Speakers with DS have demonstrated impaired vowel production, as indicated by perceptual, acoustic, and articulatory data, with emerging evidence of vowel centralization. Participants in the study included eight young adults with DS, as well as eight age- and gender-matched controls. Ultrasound imaging was utilized to obtain midsagittal tongue contours during single-word productions, specifically targeting the corner vowels /ɑ/, /æ/, …
Reading Comprehension Instruction For Young Students With High Functioning Autism: Forming Contextual Connections, Karen S. Engel
Reading Comprehension Instruction For Young Students With High Functioning Autism: Forming Contextual Connections, Karen S. Engel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Central coherence is the ability to perceive and connect salient information in a context such as a narrative text. Weak central coherence theory describes a detail-focused cognitive style of processing information that overlooks connections. This style of processing is a shortcoming of individuals with autism compared to typically developing individuals (Frith, 2003). A six-session instructional intervention to foster coherence processing and reinforce thinking strategies was administered to first and second graders while a control group received an irrelevant treatment. There were 10 students with high functioning autism in each condition, mean age 7.06 years, 18 males and 2 females. It …
Underlying Contribution Of Executive Functioning To Cognition And Academic Achievement In Individuals With Dystrophinopathy, Robert Fee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Dystrophinopathy is a genetic disorder that results in the lack of or abnormal expression of the protein dystrophin. It is a disorder that alters cell structure and function, impacts the developing brain and brain function, presents with multi-domain cognitive deficits, and influences both mood and behavior. Cognitive impairments appear to be more localized to specific areas of functioning rather than a global deficit; however, deficits have been identified across multiple cognitive domains including language and aspects of executive functioning. A careful examination of the cognitive phenotype and its association to mutations affecting CNS isoforms is necessary to clarify the neuropsychological …

Critical Paradigm Theory: A Deconstruction Of The Dominant Discourse Shaping Public Education In America, Kevin Froner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study was to deconstruct the dominant discourses shaping public education in America. To understand the ontological and genealogical roots of public education, the researcher developed a framework referred to as Critical Paradigm Theory (CPT) to examine the current education paradigm. Longitudinal data was collected from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) with an analysis of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
Additional analysis was performed applying critical paradigm theory to a …
