An Existentialist Approach To Teaching Writing: Anguish, Bad Faith, And Seriousness In Composition, Andreas Peter Herzog
An Existentialist Approach To Teaching Writing: Anguish, Bad Faith, And Seriousness In Composition, Andreas Peter Herzog
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aims at developing a model concept for the teaching of ethics in the composition classroom through the use of existentialism in the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. Overall, the gap I am trying to fill with my dissertation is a lack of awareness of how much Sartre actually fits rhetorical theory and composition. Ultimately, this dissertation is the attempt to develop an ethic that is universally applicable in the teaching of composition, without the need for a service learning environment or additional resources outside the university itself. To provide an overview of the project, the approach will be illustrated …
How S. C. Daily Newspapers Framed The Removal Of The Confederate Flag From The State House Grounds In 2015 Through Letters To The Editor And Editorials, Thomas Craig Anderson
How S. C. Daily Newspapers Framed The Removal Of The Confederate Flag From The State House Grounds In 2015 Through Letters To The Editor And Editorials, Thomas Craig Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The removal of the Confederate flag from the State House grounds in Columbia, South Carolina during the summer of 2015 was an action that had been discussed previously in the state since the flag went up over the State House in 1961. While the state legislature acted swiftly to have the flag removed after Gov. Nikki Haley’s announcement on June 22, the two and a half weeks between her announcement and removal on July 10 was filled with opinions from citizens all across the state and in areas of the United States where Confederate monuments and memorials still have a …
Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction In The Urban Pre-Kindergarten Classroom, Jacqueline E. Kennedy
Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction In The Urban Pre-Kindergarten Classroom, Jacqueline E. Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study describes the influence of culturally relevant literacy instruction on an urban preschool classroom and its effect on an educator-researcher. This research study was grounded in a theoretical framework that involved culturally responsive teaching pedagogy (Ladson-Billings, 1995), reality pedagogy (Emdin, 2012), and early literacy instruction (Algozzine, O’Shea, & Obiakor, 2009). The study was assembled as a case study bounded by one classroom in a federally funded daycare in a southern coastal city. It sought to answer the question: What are the important factors to consider when designing a culturally responsive reading curriculum for pre-kindergarten urban youth? The …
Interfacing Iconicity - Addressing Software Divarication Through Diagrammatic Design Principles, George Akhvlediani
Interfacing Iconicity - Addressing Software Divarication Through Diagrammatic Design Principles, George Akhvlediani
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines conflicts accompanying the proliferation of computer technology and, more specifically, constellations of dependency in the always expanding volume of software, platforms, and the firms/individuals using them. We identify a pervasive phenomenon of “divarication” in the growing variety of progressively specialized systems and system roles. As software systems enter new thresholds of sophistication, they effectively aggregate many distinct components and protocols. Consequently, we are confronted with a diverse ecology of stratified and thereby incompatible software systems. Software inherits the limitations and potential flaws of its constituent parts, but unlike physical machinery, it isn’t readily disassembled in instances of …
Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation And Reading Achievement Among Elementary Students In An Early Literacy Program, Rachel High
Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation And Reading Achievement Among Elementary Students In An Early Literacy Program, Rachel High
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study explores the enhancement of intrinsic motivation and reading achievement in an early literacy-tutoring program through the use of culturally relevant pedagogy. This program is an interventional method used in addition to the students’ reading curriculum. Students who have shown a reading deficit through low reading grades and consistently poor performance in benchmark tests qualify for the tutoring program. This paper contains a thorough review of the literature used to elucidate the theoretical framework. The historical background and importance of this research topic are also discussed. The methodology section of this study uses a mixed- methods design …
Integration Of Theory And Feasibility In Learning Disability Identification: Examining Criteria Effects In The Integrated Assessment And Intervention Model, Allison Stafford
Integration Of Theory And Feasibility In Learning Disability Identification: Examining Criteria Effects In The Integrated Assessment And Intervention Model, Allison Stafford
Theses and Dissertations
The accurate identification of learning disabilities is critical for applied settings as well as for research purposes. Currently, there are multiple methods of learning disability (LD) identification utilized by practitioners, including: IQ/achievement discrepancy, response to intervention, and patterns of strengths and weakness (Hale & Fiorello, 2004). Despite the use of these methods, there is a lack of research on the validity and the rates of Learning Disability identification associated with these methods. Additionally, the use of different methods creates potential differences in the base rates of students identified as having a learning disability. Further, the identification of learning disabilities needs …
A New System Of Teacher Evaluation In The Central Valley Elementary School District: An Action Research Study, Bryan Ballenger
A New System Of Teacher Evaluation In The Central Valley Elementary School District: An Action Research Study, Bryan Ballenger
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study describes the problem of practice as a dysfunctional evaluation system that is not meeting the needs of the teachers or the administration within the Central Valley Elementary School District. The identification of the problem of practice led to the development of a research focus examining elementary-level teachers’ beliefs concerning Danielson’s Framework for Teaching as the method for evaluation and the accompanying research question: What are elementary teachers’ perceptions of Danielson’s Framework for Teaching Evaluation Model? The purpose of the present action research study is to identify elementary teachers’ beliefs concerning Danielson’s Framework for Teaching Evaluation …
Uniquely Gifted: A Theology Of Mental Illness For Inclusive Ecclesiology, Asia M. Lerner
Uniquely Gifted: A Theology Of Mental Illness For Inclusive Ecclesiology, Asia M. Lerner
Selected Honors Theses
This thesis surveys the possibility of a theology of mental illness in order to create an inclusive ecclesiology for modern churches. Mental illness is greatly stigmatized in the Church as demonic or spiritual and moral failing. In combat of such stigma and prejudice to create an inclusive atmosphere in the Church, a positive theology of mental illness understood as a unique gifting is argued for. With the elusive nature of mental illness in both definition and experience taken into account, all aspects of mental illness are considered, such as biology, psychology, and philosophy of mental disorder. The thesis understands mental …

Multiperspective Graph-Theoretic Similarity Measure, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Multiperspective Graph-Theoretic Similarity Measure, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Determining the similarity between two objects is pertinent to many applications. When the basis for similarity is a set of object-to-object relationships, it is natural to rely on graph-theoretic measures. One seminal technique for measuring the structural-context similarity between a pair of graph vertices is SimRank, whose underlying intuition is that two objects are similar if they are connected by similar objects. However, by design, SimRank as well as its variants capture only a single view or perspective of similarity. Meanwhile, in many real-world scenarios, there emerge multiple perspectives of similarity, i.e., two objects may be similar from one perspective, …
The Politics Of Disaster: The Great Singapore Flood Of 1954, Fiona Williamson
The Politics Of Disaster: The Great Singapore Flood Of 1954, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Singapore in the 1950s was a deeply divided society. Struggling to recover from the hardships ofthe Second World War and fighting an internal battle that the British government termed an‘emergency’, it was a time of hardship, tension, and anxiety. In the midst of this crisis, Singapore’sinhabitants continued to manage the natural elements of their climate and environment, especiallythe dangerous combination of heavy monsoonal rains, low-lying marshland, and tidal flooding. This article examines the circumstances surrounding a particularly severe episode of flooding thatoccurred in December 1954. It explores how the flood’s impact was exacerbated by humanexigencies, especially recent government resettlement plans and …

The Complexity Of Language And Learning: Deconstructing Teachers' Conceptions Of Academic Language, Amy J. Heineke, Sabina Rak Neugebauer
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
“Academic language” is a term that is thrown around frequently in educational circles, particularly in recent years. Whether in pre-service teacher education with candidates and cooperating teachers preparing for the widely required Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA; Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity, 2016), or in-service teachers grappling with the implementation of the Common Core Standards (National Governors Association, 2010), academic language has become de rigueur a jargon term required for a number of current classroom, school, and university initiatives. But what is academic language?

The Tethered President: Consistency And Contingency In Administrative Law, William W. Buzbee
The Tethered President: Consistency And Contingency In Administrative Law, William W. Buzbee
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The law governing administrative agency policy change and the checking of unjustified inconsistency is rooted in a web of intertwined doctrine. The Supreme Court’s 2016 opinion in Encino Motorcars modestly recast that doctrine to emphasize that the agency pursuing a change cannot leave “unexplained inconsistency” or neglect to address past relevant underlying facts, but reaffirmed its central stable precepts. Nonetheless, radically different views about broad, unaccountable, and agency power to make rapid policy changes have been articulated by Justice Neil Gorsuch while on the Tenth Circuit and by agencies pursuing deregulatory policy shifts under the leadership of President Donald J. …
Conscious Identity Performance, Leslie P. Culver
Conscious Identity Performance, Leslie P. Culver
San Diego Law Review
Marginalized groups in the legal profession sometimes feel pressure to perform strategies to communicate their identity in a predominantly white legal profession. Relevant legal scholarship describes this phenomenon, for example, in terms such as covering and passing—largely forms of assimilation. The notion is that outsiders—women, people of color, LGBTQ—use these strategies to communicate with insiders—white, heterosexual, males—in ways designed to advance their status in the legal profession. This article expands on that scholarship by drawing on a theoretical framework that legal scholars have largely ignored: co-cultural theory. This interdisciplinary theory describes how non-dominant cultures communicate in a dominant society. In …

The present study reports the multistage development and evaluation of a Spanish translation of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ). The INQ measures the constructs of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, which the interpersonal theory of suicide proposes are proximal causes of suicidal desire. Participants were bilingual Hispanic college students in the United States (n = 56), heritage Spanish-speaking college students in the United States (n = 281), college students in Spain (n = 1,016), psychiatric inpatients in Mexico (n = 181), college students in Mexico (n = 239), and Spanish-speaking U.S. adults (n = …

A Causal-Comparative Analysis Of The Effect Of Reading Instruction On The Reading Achievement Of Third-Grade Students In Title I Elementary Schools., Hamilton Elijah Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) allocates federal government funds to schools serving low-income families. Title I schools receive additional financial support to combat the impact of poverty on students’ elementary and secondary education. This quantitative causal-comparative study examined the effect of reading instruction on third-grade students’ reading achievement score. The study included Title I elementary schools (n=4) within an urban school district in the Southeastern region of the United States. Participants included a convenience sampling of third-grade students (N=340). The researcher collected anonymous archived reading achievement scores from the Renaissance Star …

Assessing The Potential Of Increasing Promotoras In Extension: Hispanic Balanced Living With Diabetes, Ivette Valenzuela-Yu, Kathryn Hosig, Sarah Misyak
Journal of Extension
A sustainable Extension model for promoting health and managing lifestyle-related chronic diseases in Hispanic populations would help mitigate health disparities in Hispanic communities. Hispanic Balanced Living with Diabetes (HBLD) is a type 2 diabetes lifestyle management program that we tested in Virginia. Through postintervention focus group discussions, we assessed barriers faced by Hispanics when accessing health care services, satisfaction with HBLD, and feasibility of training members of the Hispanic community to become promotoras, individuals who help facilitate adoption of healthful behaviors. Incorporating native Spanish speakers as educators and promotoras will ensure culturally relevant delivery of lifestyle modification programs, accurate communication …

Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy
Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developers frequently discuss aspects of the systems they are developing online. The comments they post to discussions form a rich information source about the system. Intention mining, a process introduced by Di Sorbo et al., classifies sentences in developer discussions to enable further analysis. As one example of use, intention mining has been used to help build various recommenders for software developers. The technique introduced by Di Sorbo et al. to categorize sentences is based on linguistic patterns derived from two projects. The limited number of data sources used in this earlier work introduces questions about the comprehensiveness of intention …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
README files play an essential role in shaping a developer’s first impression of a software repository and in documenting the software project that the repository hosts. Yet, we lack a systematic understanding of the content of a typical README file as well as tools that can process these files automatically. To close this gap, we conduct a qualitative study involving the manual annotation of 4,226 README file sections from 393 randomly sampled GitHub repositories and we design and evaluate a classifier and a set of features that can categorize these sections automatically. We find that information discussing the ‘What’ and …
Deal Structure, Cathy Hwang, Matthew Jennejohn
Deal Structure, Cathy Hwang, Matthew Jennejohn
Northwestern University Law Review
Modern commercial contracts—those governing mergers and acquisitions and financial derivatives, for instance—have become structurally complex and interconnected. Yet contract law largely ignores structural complexity. This Article develops a theory of “contractual structuralism” to explain the important role of structure in every aspect of contract law, from the design of a contract to courts’ interpretation and enforcement.
For generations, scholars have debated whether a court should consider only the text of a contract or also consider broader context to determine parties’ intent. More recently, scholars have shown that parties can choose between textual and contextual interpretation by drafting a contract provision …
