Backtalk: Visual Language And The Representation Of Black Women, Cathy Charles Jan 2018

Backtalk: Visual Language And The Representation Of Black Women, Cathy Charles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

For years, black women have endured the mainstream stereotypes of the Mammy, the Jezebel, and the Sapphire. Backtalk is a conversation about black women using their own language translated into a graphic visual language. It examines ways in which black women are active agents in the social scripting of their own identities. Their complexity is visualized using a formal semiotic system based on their individual descriptions. This new visual language allows black women to deconstruct the limiting categorizations mainstream culture allows them, freeing participants from category-based expectations.

Building A Profile Of Inattentive Participants: Attachment Theory And Inattentive Responding, Joshua Allan Sheppard Jan 2018

Building A Profile Of Inattentive Participants: Attachment Theory And Inattentive Responding, Joshua Allan Sheppard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Inattentive responding by research participants may decrease the reliability and validity of self-report measures. The current studies broaden the record of personality traits correlated with inattention by examining individual differences in attachment anxiety and avoidance among adults in romantic relationships. Based upon the characteristics typically exhibited by adults high on attachment avoidance, I expected an overlap between this personality trait and inattention, such that participants higher on attachment avoidance would exhibit higher levels of inattentive responding when answering self-report questions about their relationship. Two studies addressed this hypothesis using both self-report data from individuals and partner-report data from romantic couples …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Intracavitary high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDRBT) is a treatment option for endometrial cancer, depending on the cancer stage. Because of the steep high dose gradient of HDRBT, very small differences in the treatment plans, surrounding organ’s anatomy, or procedures during the treatment could potentially cause significant dose variation to the tumor, as well as organs at risks (OAR) nearby the treatment area, which could result in unwanted radiobiological side effects. In this retrospective study, the radiobiological plan evaluation parameters Equivalent Uniform Dose (EUD), Normal Tissue Complication Probability (NTCP) are used as assessment tools to evaluate HDRBT plans. Furthermore, gynecological applicator position in …

Enhancing Fracture Toughness And Thermo-Mechanical Properties Of Vinyl-Ester Composites Using A Hybrid Inclusion Of Cnt And Gnp, Christopher M. Gapstur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

We report a method of increasing fracture toughness (KIc) and strain energy release rate (GIc) of vinyl-ester (VE) matrix by adopting a hybrid (dual) reinforcement strategy. The idea of using this strategy was to trigger intrinsic polymer-nanoparticle interaction such as carbon nanotube (CNT) pull-out and interface sliding to enhance energy absorption during fracture. Additionally, we included a second reinforcement, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP), to promote crack-deflection, crack bridging and cross-linking density. Both reinforcements were dispersed into the polymer in three states: non-functionalized (nf>); functionalized with COOH (f>); surface-treated with Triton X-100 (TX100). We embarked on numerous experiments with many …

Essays In Return Predictability After Large Price Shocks, Kevin P. Brady Jan 2018

Essays In Return Predictability After Large Price Shocks, Kevin P. Brady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In Essay 1, I use cross-country differences in investors’ traits — trust, patience, overconfidence, and risk tolerance — to test the underreaction, overreaction, and uncertain information theories of stock returns. I find that investors’ reactions to large daily stock price shocks vary between lower and higher levels of these traits. Specifically, investors with lower levels of trust and more patience underreact more (or overreact less) to price shocks, which aligns with the predictions of the underreaction hypothesis. Investors with higher levels of overconfidence overreact more to positive price shocks and overreact less to negative price shocks. While this finding does …

Examining Student Level Variables As Predictors For On- Time High School Cohort Graduation, Brian M. Mcmahon Jan 2018

Examining Student Level Variables As Predictors For On- Time High School Cohort Graduation, Brian M. Mcmahon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Recent literature on high school graduation and drop out have shifted the focus from identifying causes of drop out to identifying students who are at risk of dropping out. The Early Warning Systems (EWS) used to identify students seek to use existing data to predict which students have a greater risk of dropping out of school so that schools can intervene early enough to reengage students. Despite widespread attention to individual indicators, there is no defined system of indicators proven to be generalizable across grade levels, specifically at the elementary grade levels. Drawing on the tenets of Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) Ecological …

Healing And Transformation In Chronic Illness Memoirs, Michelle Rodanes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The employment of metaphors in drawing meaning from our experiences is an indispensable ingredient in most patient narratives. More specifically, they are essential to the conceptual system we reference to understand and respond to the disruptions brought upon by chronic illness. Through an analysis of patient narratives penned by a group of contemporary American authors, this study identifies trends in how patients can use metaphor to “bridge” the gap between their lives pre and post diagnosis, a process that in many cases presents vulnerability as a viable remedy for alleviating the alienation and diminished self-image so often impacting the lives …

Ireland’S Faithful Servant: Alexander Martin Sullivan And Constitutional Nationalism In Post-Famine Ireland, 1855 – 1870, Douglas C. Kenny Jan 2018

Ireland’S Faithful Servant: Alexander Martin Sullivan And Constitutional Nationalism In Post-Famine Ireland, 1855 – 1870, Douglas C. Kenny

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis reappraises the significance of Alexander Martin Sullivan, the Irish constitutional nationalist and owner-editor of the Nation, by examining his role in carrying Young Ireland’s moderate nationalist program through the lull in popular politics between the 1840s and 1870s. Sullivan has been routinely marginalized as an important historical figure in post-Famine popular politics, yet his campaign of propping up nationalist heroes and attempts at forming nationalist organizations, primarily through the Nation, ultimately helped to revitalize nationalist politics. Although his efforts were often threatened, and even thwarted at times, by James Stephens and other advanced nationalists, Sullivan managed to preserve …
