Chesapeake Bay Nutria Eradication Project: 2017 Update, Margaret Pepper, Kevin Sullivan, Robert Colona, Jonathan Mcknight

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Nutria, a semi-aquatic, South American rodent, was introduced to Maryland during the early 1940s. Originally brought to the area for fur farms, the market never established and animals were released or escaped. Nutria thrived, destroying coastal wetlands which resulted in negative environmental and economic impacts to the Chesapeake Bay region. To preserve and protect valuable wetland resources, the Chesapeake Bay Nutria Eradication Project (CBNEP) was established in 2002 through a partnership between the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and many state agencies and non-governmental organizations. Since …

Anticoagulant Rodenticide Residues In Game Animals In California, Stella C. Mcmillin, Robert H. Poppenga, Shannon C. Chandler, Deana L. Clifford

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used to control rodents around homes, buildings, and in agriculture. They have been found widely in predatory and scavenging wildlife as a result of secondary exposure and less commonly in herbivores and omnivores from primary exposure. While predators and scavengers have been monitored for AR exposure, very little information is available about AR residues in edible muscle tissue of game animals. Game animals may be exposed to ARs through direct consumption of bait, ingestion of contaminated food or vegetation, or consumption of contaminated prey items. Carcasses of three species of game animals (black bear, wild pigs, …

While bones and muscles adapt to mechanical loading, it appears that very specific types of stimuli must be applied to achieve osteogenesis. Our study assessed musculoskeletal outcomes to 30 training sessions on an Inertial Exercise Trainer (Newnan, GA). Subjects (n = 13) performed workouts with their left leg, while their right served as an untreated control. Work-outs entailed three 60-s sets each of knee extension, hip extension and calf press exercises, separated by 90-s rests. Before and after the 30 training sessions, subjects underwent strength tests (knee and ankle extensors of both legs), DEXA scans (hip, knee and ankles of …

What Race Terms Do: Du Bois, Biology, And Psychology On The Meanings Of “Race”, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo Jan 2018

What Race Terms Do: Du Bois, Biology, And Psychology On The Meanings Of “Race”, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper does two things. First, it interprets the work of W. E. B. Du Bois to reveal that the meanings of race terms are grounded by both a historical and an aspirational component. Race terms refer to a backward-looking component that traces the history of the group to its present time, as well as a forward-looking component that sets out values and goals for the group. Race terms thus refer to a complex cluster of concepts that involve biological, sociological, historical, moral, and political properties. Second, the paper defends W. E. B. Du Bois’s conservationist thesis about races, which …

Trunk Postural Adjustments: Medium-Term Reliability And Correlation With Changes Of Clinical Outcomes Following An 8-Week Lumbar Stabilization Exercise Program, Jean-Alexandre Boucher, Richard Preuss, Sharon M. Henry, Marilee Nugent, Christian Larivière

Études primaires

Background

Low back pain (LBP) has been previously associated with delayed anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) determined by trunk muscle activation. Lumbar stabilization exercise programs (LSEP) for patients with LBP may restore the trunk neuromuscular control of the lumbar spine, and normalize APAs. This exploratory study aimed at testing the reliability of EMG and kinematics-based postural adjustment measures over an 8-week interval, assessing their sensitivity to LBP status and treatment and examining their relationship with clinical outcomes.

Methods

Muscle activation of 10 trunk muscles, using surface electromyography (EMG), and lumbar angular kinematics were recorded during a rapid arm-raising/lowering task. Patients with …

Touch Dna And Chemical Analysis Of Skin Trace Evidence: Protecting Privacy While Advancing Investigations, Mary Graw Leary

Scholarly Articles

Forensic science transforms criminal investigations by resolving previously unsolvable cases and bringing an increased sense of justice to communities. This application of scientific disciplines to legal questions aids investigators in solving crimes. While many sciences can be utilized—such as physics (pattern evidence), chemistry (toxicology), or biology (cause of death), to name a few—two aspects of scientific advancement have played an outsized role in responding to crime. Trace evidence analysis—specifically, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis—is an essential component to an effective and accurate criminal justice system. DNA evidence has emerged as a powerful tool to identify perpetrators of unspeakable crimes and to …

Our Constitution has a deferred maintenance problem because we have fallen out of the habit of tending to its upkeep ourselves. The silver lining is a double benefit from any constitutional maintenance projects that we undertake now. These projects are good not only for what they do to our Constitution, but also for making us exercise self-government muscles that have atrophied from civic sloth.

Fortunately, the time has never been better to repeal one of our Constitution’s most pointlessly exclusionary provisions. The President of the United States is married to a naturalized citizen. And nobody can legitimately question the patriotism …

Development Of A Method For Extraction And Determination Of 4,4′-Methylenedianiline In Soils By Solid-Phase Extraction And Uplc-Ms-Ms, Camille Brunet, Simon Aubin, Sébastien Gagné, Robert West, Jacques Lesage

Études primaires

The 4,4′-methylenedianiline (MDA) substance is an important chemical intermediate which is produced in very large tonnages, the majority of which is consumed in its conversion to 4,4′-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). The MDA substance has known adverse effects which can be associated with human and environmental exposure. The growing number and volume of applications of polyurethane formulations containing MDI in the open environment and in agriculture has led to increased concern about indirect exposure to MDA in the environment, where it may occur as a potential degradation product of these polyurethane materials. This method employs ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem …

Increasing Alligator Snapping Turtle Head-Starting Success Through Housing Enrichment And Inoculation Of Hatchlings With Digestive Microbiota, Kristen Erin Sardina

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Due to historic overharvest and habitat degradation, the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) has experienced population declines throughout its range. Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery in southern Oklahoma began a captive head-start program for this species in 2000 and has since released over 1,400 turtles in the region. However, there has been a recurring trend of turtles growing faster after release than while in captivity. My research sought to investigate this pattern by determining: 1) the influence of housing enrichment and housing density on juvenile growth rates and stress in indoor enclosures, and 2) the effects of supplementing hatchlings …

Who Are “Officers Of The United States”?, Jennifer L. Mascott

Scholarly Articles

For decades courts have believed that only officials with “significant authority” are “Officers of the United States” subject to the Constitution’s Article II Appointments Clause requirements. But this standard has proved difficult to apply to major categories of officials. This Article examines whether “significant authority” is even the proper standard, at least as that standard has been applied in modern practice. To uncover whether the modern understanding of the term “officer” is consistent with the term’s original public meaning, this Article uses two distinctive tools: (i) corpus linguistics-style analysis of Founding-era documents and (ii) examination of appointment practices during the …

Finding Opportunities Outside The Academy To Enhance Student Learning: A Paper On Practice, Rebecca Frederickson, Karen Dunlap, Sarah K. Mcmahan

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

A recent trend in higher education is the concept of giving authentic experiences to students. A report in the Washington Post found that college graduates were greatly lacking necessary career readiness skills including decision-making, prioritization, time management, and problem solving (Selingo, 2015) needed for entry into the professional job market. Additional research noted students often have difficulty bridging theory to practice and transferring skills from one situation to another (Gordon, 2007). This paper highlights the work of one southwestern university Teacher Education program as they addressed such concerns. Program faculty looked for opportunities to utilize pedagogical expertise outside the academy …

Engaging College Students With Information, Anne Cizmar, Samantha Braun

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Engaging college students in their campus and community is a goal shared by many in higher education and government. Yet engaging students can be a difficult task. In this paper, we extend the existing literature on student engagement to include civic engagement. We test one possible method of mobilizing student participation—learning about the importance of participation in an event. We analyze whether providing students with information about the competitive, important nature of events may spur participation. We present results from a survey experiment on how learning about an upcoming competitive midterm election and competitive basketball season may motivate students to …

Naming Brazil's Previously Poor: “New Middle Class” As An Economic, Political, And Experiential Category, Charles H. Klein, Sean T. Mitchell, Benjamin Junge

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The early years of the 21st century were historic for socioeconomic relations in Brazil. While long known for stark socioeconomic inequality, the nation became internationally celebrated for its economic growth and successful poverty-reduction initiatives, which together propelled some 35 million “previously poor” Brazilians into what became called a “new middle class.” The apparent rise of this “new” class has generated contentious debates and a range of social science studies in Brazil; yet this literature is little known in the Anglophone academic world. While some have interpreted this demographic transformation as an expansion of the existing middle class, others have questioned …

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis Facilitates Evolutionary Models Of Culture Change, Cameron M. Smith, Liane Gabora, William Gardner-O’Kearney

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) is beginning to fulfill the whole promise of Darwinian insight through its extension of evolutionary understanding from the biological domain to include cultural information evolution. Several decades of important foundation-laying work took a social Darwinist approach and exhibited ecologically-deterministic elements. This is not the case for more recent developments to the evolutionary study of culture, which emphasize non-Darwinian processes such as self-organization, potentiality, and epigenetic change.

Effects Of Motion Segment Simulation And Joint Positioning On Spinal Loads In Trunk Musculoskeletal Models, F. Ghezelbash, A. H. Eskandari, A. Shirazi-Adl, N. Arjmand, Z. El Ouaaid, A. Plamondon Jan 2018

Effects Of Motion Segment Simulation And Joint Positioning On Spinal Loads In Trunk Musculoskeletal Models, F. Ghezelbash, A. H. Eskandari, A. Shirazi-Adl, N. Arjmand, Z. El Ouaaid, A. Plamondon

Études primaires

Musculoskeletal models represent spinal motion segments by spherical joints/beams with linear/nonlinear properties placed at various locations. We investigated the fidelity of these simplified models (i.e., spherical joints with/without rotational springs and beams considering nonlinear/linear properties) in predicting kinematics of the ligamentous spine in comparison with a detailed finite element (FE) model while considering various anterior-posterior joint placements. Using the simplified models with different joint offsets in a subject-specific musculoskeletal model, we computed local spinal forces during forward flexion and compared results with intradiscal pressure measurements. In comparison to the detailed FE model, linearized beam and spherical joint models failed to …
