The Iranian Metaphysicals, Elise K. Burton
The Iranian Metaphysicals, Elise K. Burton
International Dialogue
Anthropologist Alireza Doostdar’s first book, The Iranian Metaphysicals, is a well-written and theoretically sophisticated contribution to scholarship on modern Iranian history and society. Combining vividly portrayed ethnography with archival research and textual analysis, he offers an unprecedented account of Iranians’ experiences with and beliefs about the supernatural. The term ‘metaphysical’ emerges directly from his Iranian interlocutors, who use the Persian equivalents metafiziki or mavara’i to describe paranormal practices and phenomena ranging from sorcery and traditional occult sciences, to spirit possession and séances, to clairvoyance and teleportation. Although many elite Iranians, secularist and orthodox Shi‘i alike, have condemned interest in the …

The Sekujam Language Of West Kalimantan (Indonesia), James T. Collins, Herpanus Herpanus
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Almost two hundred years ago, O. van Kessel identified a language group based on a characteristic sound change that yielded -ai in the final position of some words (Van Kessel 1850: 166); Hudson (1970) named this group “Ibanic” after the Iban language widely spoken in Sarawak. Of the numerous members of the Ibanic branch of Malayic, perhaps the Sekujam language is the least known. Although Sujarni et al. (2008: 282-285) provided information about the location and traditions of the Sekujam ethnic group, there is very little information about the language. Based on available colonial and contemporary sources, this essay provides …

Global Dialogue Among Religions: An Islamic Perspective, Adnane Mokrani
Global Dialogue Among Religions: An Islamic Perspective, Adnane Mokrani
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
The author raises questions about some aspects of the role of the theologian in a global world. He points out that the issues that theology faced in the past do not always directly connect with today’s issues. In the past, a Muslim theologian was considered an expert in theology, law and Sufism. But many definitive categories from the past seem antiquated in today’s complicated post-modern, globalizing world. We must now formulate our discourse in such a way as to be meaningful within our respective communities, but also within a larger pluralistic audience. Dialogue facilitates the process of distinguishing between the …

The present study describes the predicted model and functional characterization of an endochitinase (30 kDa) from corms of Gladiolus grandiflorus. ESI-QTOF-MS generated peptide showed 96% sequence homology with family 18, Class III acidic endochitinase of Gladiolus gandavensis. Purified G. grandiflorus chitinase (GgChi) hydrolyzed 4-methylumbelliferyl b-DN, N0,N00-triacetylchitotriose substrate showing specific endochitinase activity. Since no structural details of GgChi were available in the Protein Data Bank (PDB), a homology model was predicted using the coordinate information of Crocus vernus chitinase (PDB ID: 3SIM). Ramachandran plot indicated 84.5% in most favored region, 14.8% in additional and 0.6% in generously allowed region while no …
