Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso
Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
From the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century PhilippineMoros increasingly wrote the Spanish language in Arabic script knownas Philippine Jawi. This cultural phenomenon, which went beyond merecode switching, is illustrated through documents found in the NationalArchives of the Philippines, particularly protocols involving the Tausug andMaguindanao sultanates. The use of Spanish in Jawi documents increased, thanks to Zamboanga’s role as a cultural center in the south and Manila’sability to attract sultans politically. Jawi was also used as the scriptin language primers through the strategic work of the Jesuit JacintoJuanmartí, who originated Moro philology.KEYWORDS: ALJAMIADO • SPANISH • JAWI • MORO PHILOLOGY • …

Using Wikipedia In Israel Studies Courses, Shira Klein
History Faculty Articles and Research
Instructors of Israeli history or literature, like professors in other areas, complain about students’ use of Wikipedia—and with good reason. Unlike peer-reviewed scholarship, many Wikipedia articles contain information that is both incomplete and wrong. Most instructors will warn their students that relying on Wikipedia is a sure recipe for failing assignments. Yet there is a way to mobilize this giant encyclopedia for pedagogical purposes. When students in Israel Studies classes are assigned to edit Wikipedia articles, they achieve multiple goals: they gain critical reading skills, shape public knowledge about Israel, and engage in active learning. This article explains how to …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Pantheism and Escapism in Abu Madi's 'Enigmas' and 'The Evening' From English Romanticism Perspectives" Yasser K. R. Aman investigates and analyses the possibilities of pantheism's encirclement of escapism in Elia Abu Madi's two poems from English Romanticism perspective. The article compares Abu Madi's fluctuating attitude towards escapism and pantheism to William Wordsworth's "Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour July 13, 1798," Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind," highlighting the affinities and differences. Lost In Translation: The Male Gaze And The (In)Visible Bodies Of Muslim Women - A Response Article, Ewa Glapka
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article explores women’s relationship with the patriarchal surveillance of their bodies – ‘the male gaze’. Going beyond the scholarly tradition of solely critiquing the patriarchal discourse of the female body, the study examines the processes in which individuals relate to the male gaze by means of socio-culturally available meaning-making resources. The analysis is based on interviews with Muslim women in South Africa who talk about their hijab practices and thus position themselves to the patriarchal discourses of Islam and West. The article advances a theoretical and analytical framework in which concepts of ‘hybridity’ and ‘difference’ are harnessed to examine …

Religion, Media, And Marginality In Modern Africa, Felicitas Becker, Joel Cabrita, Marie Rodet
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
In recent years, anthropologists, historians, and others have been drawn to study the profuse and creative usages of digital media by religious movements. At the same time, scholars of Christian Africa have long been concerned with the history of textual culture, the politics of Bible translation, and the status of the vernacular in Christianity. Students of Islam in Africa have similarly examined politics of knowledge, the transmission of learning in written form, and the influence of new media. Until now, however, these arenas—Christianity and Islam, digital media and “old” media—have been studied separately.

Color Symbolism In Islamic Book Painting, Imane Sadek Abaza
Color Symbolism In Islamic Book Painting, Imane Sadek Abaza
Theses and Dissertations
Light plays a central role in the Quran. The contrast between light and dark demonstrates a pivotal conception in the Islamic faith. It is the difference between knowledge and ignorance, faith and infidelity, and right and wrong. As depicted by al-Ghazali, God is the source of the ultimate light, and by seeing that light a person reaches a state of revelation since only the faithful see that light. The ignorant or unfaithful live in darkness without the light of God or faith to guide them through life. Considering the importance of this concept in the Islamic faith, colors as the …
The Shari'a Courts Of Mogadishu: Beyond "African Islam" And "Islamic Law", Ahmed Ibrahim
The Shari'a Courts Of Mogadishu: Beyond "African Islam" And "Islamic Law", Ahmed Ibrahim
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation, based on a year and eight months of fieldwork, is a historical ethnography of a Shari‘a-based movement which appeared in Mogadishu, Somalia within a year after the complete disintegration of the central government in 1991. The movement originated when religious authorities and “traditional” elders established centers in various neighborhoods in Mogadishu to deal with the vacuum of power after the fall of the state. Since Shari‘a structures of authority and discourse were integral to the formation and functioning of the centers, they became known as Shari‘a courts. My work on the Shari‘a courts intervenes in the literature on …

Tolerance Education In The Hidden Curriculum: A Case Study On Indonesian Public School, Kevin Nobel Kurniawan
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Religious intolerance is spreading within the Indonesian institution of education. Previous studies have shown that the growth of intolerance is due to the state’s regulation and pedagogical apparatus. In contrast to the previous studies, I argue that the intolerance is related to a hidden curriculum applied by the institution of education. Normatively, the hidden curriculum contains the value of religious tolerance. However, factually, I found evidence of practices of intolerance, through both the formal and informal spheres within the school structure, in a hidden curriculum. This article is written based on a qualitative approach with a mixed-method research strategy to …
