Historicizing Muslim American Literature: Studies On Literature By African American And South Asian American Muslim Writers, Wawan Eko Yulianto
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In response to the challenge of understanding Muslim Americans in a way that highlights their integral role in the United States through literature, this research starts with two questions: 1) how should we read Muslim American literature in relation to the lived experiences of Islam in America? and 2) how does Muslim American literature contribute to the more mainstream American literature.
To answer those questions, this research takes as its foundations the theories by Stuart Hall and Satya Mohanty on, firstly, the evolving nature of diaspora identity and on the epistemic status of identity. Following Hall’s argument that every expression …

Black Islamic Evangelization In The American South, Chester Warren Cornell
Black Islamic Evangelization In The American South, Chester Warren Cornell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Broadly speaking, my research focus is on African American religion, with particular interest in the various manifestations of black Islam in the United States. I am particularly interested in the question “Has religion served as an opiate or stimulant for black political protest?” And my research attempts to answer it by chronicling the experiences of black Muslims in southern prisons. My dissertation builds on Michelle Alexander’s groundbreaking book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (2010). Alexander argues that African Americans were not over-represented in America’s prisons in the 1970s, but with President Reagan’s War on …
Losing The Battle; The Marginalization Of Javanese Compact Forms, Aris Munandar
Losing The Battle; The Marginalization Of Javanese Compact Forms, Aris Munandar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In the contact situation with Indonesian, the standard variety of Javanese in Yogyakarta is experiencing an incipient shift. The shift is indicated by the shrinking domain of use, and the degradation of speakers’ proficiency. It also reveals some ongoing changes in its structure, observable in the tendency of the younger generation to use particular elements different to those used by grandparent and parent generations. This article examines unique patterns of Javanese morphosyntax by focusing on the suffix -a, infix -um-, -in-, and confix ka-an, on the basis of utterances recorded from authentic speech events involving speakers of different generations. The …

The Description Of The Di- Passive Construction In Dialectal Javanese, Noor Malihah
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This corpus of the non-standard Kudus dialect of Javanese (JDK) passive voice construction was compiled in the course of fieldwork in Kudus and was annotated to draw attention to several syntactic/semantic features. An investigation was undertaken of the di- affix in the JDK which encodes the passive function in contrast to the Standard Javanese in a quantitative descriptive analysis. The results indicate the existence of an “abbreviated agentive passive” which occurs more frequently than the “agentive passive”, but less frequently than the “agentless passive”. The results also show that the passives in JDK are in fact likely to have inanimate …

Boko Haram's Covert Front, Akali Omeni
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
Waging a highly irregular war — an insurgency — in Northeast Nigeria since September 2010, Boko Haram over the years has escalated as a threat form. By 2014, this threat extended beyond Nigeria’s borders; and by 2017, thousands of people had become casualties of the conflict; with millions displaced in Northeast Nigeria. Boko Haram however did not necessarily achieve this threat escalation by fighting and defeating the Nigerian military on the battlefield. A large part of Boko Haram’s calculations, rather, have been focused on its covert front and on war avoidance altogether. Indeed, covert tactics have been the main vehicle …

English language teachers/experts and institutions have long been welcomed to the UAE to empower the nation in its quest …

One of the characteristic of Islam in the beginning of glorious era is success in politics. The glorius of Islam continues until the last caliphate, Ottoman Empire. However, there are problems in the elec- tion system of the Head of State. Prophet Muhammad PBUH did not provide example about how to elect and the criteria about whom must be chosen. There are two models of the election. First, with the musyawarah by the ahlul halli wal ‘aqdi, and the second, with the appointment by the previous leader. In that context, some of ulamas like Imam Al Mawardi, Said Hawwa, …

It is in connection to the above, that this …

The Arab “Street” And The Middle East’S Democracy Deficit, Dale F. Eickelman
Naval War College Review
Rising education, easier travel, new communications media, and liberalizing voices are quickly making the Arab “street” a true “public sphere”—a force with which governments, and the West, will have to reckon. The good news, argues a scholar of the Muslim world, is that channels exist by which the West can address the Arab public. But that public, better informed, will be quick to notice gaps between statement and action.

The most important issue regarding the angles which, I believe, has not been thoroughly examined is seeing them in this world. I have collected relevant facts and I have not found strong evidence except what are mentioned in the Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah as well as scholars' …

What is worth noting here is that almushtagaat almaaliah (financial derivatives) negatively affects the cost of investment in …
