Optic Flow Improves Step Width And Length In Older Adults While Performing Dual Task, Taylor Leeder, Farah Fallahtafti, Molly Schieber, Sara A. Myers, Julie Blaskewicz Boron, Jennifer M. Yentes

Journal Articles

Background

Dual-task paradigms are used to investigate gait and cognitive declines in older adults (OA). Optic-flow is a virtual reality environment where the scene flows past the subject while walking on a treadmill, mimicking real-life locomotion.

Aims

To investigate cost of environment (no optic-flow v. optic-flow) while completing single- and dual-task walking and dual-task costs (DTC; single- v. dual-task) in optic-flow and no optic-flow environments.

Methods

Twenty OA and seven younger adults (YA) walked on a self-paced treadmill in 3-min segments per task and both environments. Five task conditions included: no task, semantic fluency (category), phonemic fluency (letters), word reading, …

Statistical Monitoring Of Queuing Networks, Yaren Bilge Kaya Oct 2018

Statistical Monitoring Of Queuing Networks, Yaren Bilge Kaya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Queuing systems are important parts of our daily lives and to keep their operations at an efficient level they need to be monitored by using queuing Performance Metrics, such as average queue lengths and average waiting times. On the other hand queue lengths and waiting times are generally random variables and their distributions depend on different properties like arrival rates, service times, number of servers. We focused on detecting the change in service rates in this report. Therefore, we monitored queues by using Cumulative Sum(CUSUM) charts based on likelihood ratios and compared the Average Run Length values of different service …

"I Imagine The Male Isn't In The Video And It Is Me:" A Mixed Methods Study Of Internet Pornography, Masculinity, And Sexual Aggression In Emerging Adulthood, Christina Richardson

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Research on Internet pornography has consistently found that men are more likely to view mainstream porn than women and that most men view pornography. Additionally, mainstream porn content has been found to portray highly stereotyped views of gender with men in positions of dominance over women and men engaging in aggression toward women. Despite the consistent finding that pornography is a gendered phenomenon, there is little research exploring the connection between masculinity and pornography use. Furthermore, research on the effects of pornography use on sexual aggression has been mixed, with some findings indicating that men who view porn are more …

Exploring Men Who Have Sex With Men’S Hiv Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Initiation Decision-Making Processes In The Southern United States, Portia Thomas

Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations

In 2012, the first pharmacological HIV preventative agent, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was approved in the U.S. for individuals at high-risk of contracting HIV. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased HIV risk, due to their engagement in anal intercourse (AI), which is the most common mode of HIV transmission and the riskiest type of sex. Although evidence indicates that most PrEP paients are MSM, a paucity of evidence exists on MSM’s PrEP initation decision-making process. The purpose of this study was to explore how HIV-negative MSM engaging in protected or unprotected AI decide to initiate PrEP based …

Navigating Health Care Transition: An Exploration Into The Experiences Of Parents And Their Adolescents With Special Health Care Needs Utilizing A Transitional Care Service, Jane Tobias, Dnp, Crnp

College of Nursing Posters

Abstract

Adolescents with special health care needs encounter barriers and challenges during transition to adult health care that have the potential to impact health outcomes and satisfaction with the experience. The use of transitional care services can provide resources and support throughout the transition process to the adolescent and their parent/caregiver. This descriptive survey study was conducted to evaluate adolescent and/or parent/caregiver satisfaction with the transitional care services provided by an urban, academic, pediatric health care facility. Nineteen of 39 (49%) eligible participants completed the survey. Findings indicate that adolescents and their parent/caregiver were satisfied with the resources and support …

Collagen Prolyl 4-Hydroxylase 1 Is Essential For Hif-1Α Stabilization And Tnbc Chemoresistance, Gaofeng Xiong, Rachel L. Stewart, Jie Chen, Tianyan Gao, Timothy L. Scott, Luis M. Samayoa, Kathleen L. O'Connor, Andrew N. Lane, Ren Xu

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Collagen prolyl 4-hydroxylase (P4H) expression and collagen hydroxylation in cancer cells are necessary for breast cancer progression. Here, we show that P4H alpha 1 subunit (P4HA1) protein expression is induced in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and HER2 positive breast cancer. By modulating alpha ketoglutarate (α-KG) and succinate levels P4HA1 expression reduces proline hydroxylation on hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) 1α, enhancing its stability in cancer cells. Activation of the P4HA/HIF-1 axis enhances cancer cell stemness, accompanied by decreased oxidative phosphorylation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Inhibition of P4HA1 sensitizes TNBC to the chemotherapeutic agent docetaxel and doxorubicin in xenografts and patient-derived …

Civil Service Reforms That Work, Miftah Ismail Dr. Oct 2018

Civil Service Reforms That Work, Miftah Ismail Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The newly-installed PTI government has constituted a task force on civil-service reforms. Over the years our governments have tried a number of times to reform the civil service but for various reasons, as eloquently articulated in this newspaper by Mosharraf Zaidi a few weeks ago, all previous efforts have failed. Most of the failures were not due to a lack of ideas or recommendations, but rather due to an inability to implement reforms. And this inability sprang from reluctance on the part of the bureaucracy to accept reforms. This time the civil service reform task force has been set up …

Metabolic Reprogramming Of Murine Cardiomyocytes During Autophagy Requires The Extracellular Nutrient Sensor Decorin., Maria A. Gubbiotti, Erin L. Seifert, Ulrich Rodeck, Jan B. Hoek, Renato V. Iozzo

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The extracellular matrix is a master regulator of tissue homeostasis in health and disease. Here we examined how the small, leucine-rich, extracellular matrix proteoglycan decorin regulates cardiomyocyte metabolism during fasting in vivo. First, we validated in Dcn-/- mice that decorin plays an essential role in autophagy induced by fasting. High-Throughput metabolomics analyses of cardiac tissue in Dcn-/- mice subjected to fasting revealed striking differences in the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway resulting in aberrant cardiac O-β-N-Acetylglycosylation as compared with WT mice. Functionally, Dcn-/- mice maintained cardiac function at a level comparable with nonfasted animals whereas fasted WT mice showed …

Recovery Of Nutrients From Anaerobically Digested Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (Ebpr) Sludge Through Struvite Precipitation, Maraida Balaguer-Barbosa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water resources in Florida have been severely degraded by eutrophic conditions, resulting toxic algae blooms, which negatively affect health and tourism. Eutrophication, or excessive amount of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in water, overstimulates the production of aquatic plants, depletes dissolved oxygen, and deteriorates the aquatic environment. However, phosphorus is a non-renewable resource essential for all living organisms. In fact, more than half of the total demand for P globally is to supply the food industry, which has concerningly accelerated the depletion rates of phosphate reserves.

In many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) approach has …
