Diets And Stable Isotope Signatures Of Yellowtail Rockfish (Sebastes Flavidus) In Central California, Jennifer Chiu Oct 2018

Diets And Stable Isotope Signatures Of Yellowtail Rockfish (Sebastes Flavidus) In Central California, Jennifer Chiu

Master's Theses

Studies of fish diets can improve the understanding of trophic distributions and the predatory role of a species in an ecosystem. Identifying the spatial and temporal variability in the diets of fishes can provide useful information for stock assessments and management. Yellowtail Rockfish (Sebastes flavidus) are a commercially and recreationally important fishery species, and abundant along the central California coast, yet the most recent studies of diets occurred over 20 years ago in Oregon and Washington. To provide current information from California, I examined the food habits of Yellowtail Rockfish collected near Cordell Bank, the Farallon Islands, and Half Moon …

Stratospheric Intrusions Over Northern California During Cabots: A Study Of Ozone Transport And The Influence On Surface Ozone Pollution In The Sacramento Valley, Jodie Clark Oct 2018

Stratospheric Intrusions Over Northern California During Cabots: A Study Of Ozone Transport And The Influence On Surface Ozone Pollution In The Sacramento Valley, Jodie Clark

Master's Theses

Stratospheric intrusions occur above California throughout all seasons. Stratospheric intrusions are known to transport ozone rich stratospheric air into the lower troposphere, influencing surface ozone, especially in the mountainous regions of the western US. These intrusions potentially influence the surface ozone concentrations to be above the health-based national ambient air quality standard. Potential Vorticity is a widely accepted tracer of stratospheric air masses being injected into the troposphere. Stratospheric intrusions during the last few weeks of the California Baseline Ozone Transport Study are identified over Northern California, influencing air masses above Bodega Bay and Sacramento. Utilizing daily ozonesonde data from …

Compliance And Appropriateness Of Driver Vision Regulations In Ireland, Ciara Mchugh, Nabin Paudel, James Loughman, Matthew Sheehan

Other

Driving is a highly complex task which relies heavily on vision for successful execution. There are currently 2,820,528 holders of driving licences in Ireland. Holders of a driving license must meet the standards for vision as set out by the Road Safety Authority Slainte agus Tiomáint document. Visual acuity and Visual Field measurements are specified as the minimum standard. If there is reason to believe that these measurements are inadequate, it is required that the subject undergo a more detailed examination. Currently, drivers must undergo a vision screening when applying for their first license, and additional vision screening is not …

Canavalia Gladiata And Dolichos Lablab Extracts For Sustainable Pest Biocontrol And Plant Nutrition Improvement In El Salvador, Carlos Martinez

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Botanical repellents and pesticides are now being rediscovered as new tools for integrated pest management in order to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in crop production. Canavalia gladiata and Dolichos lablab are two Fabaceae very well adapted to farmlands of El Salvador, effective as living barriers and mostly as cover crops, however, they are not yet very well disseminated. This document describes the potential for using the liquid extracts and the dry flour of raw seeds of those plants for economic benefit and practical convenience for pest management in Salvadorian agriculture under field conditions. Seed extracts were useful when …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Objective: To assess the potential relationship between Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infection and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2) in Xinjiang, China.

Methods: A case–control study of consecutively included DM-2 patients and normal controls was conducted among the Uygur and Han populations in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Blood samples were collected and KSHV seroprevalence, antibody titers, and viral load were investigated. Logistic regression analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were applied to explore determinants of the main outcome measures.

Results: A total of 324 patients with DM-2 and 376 normal controls were included. The seroprevalence of KSHV was 49.1% (95% …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Satisfaction in the hospital setting is an important component of both hospital funding and patient experience. When it comes to a child's hospital experience, parent satisfaction of their child's perioperative care is also necessary to understand. However, little research has been conducted on the predictors of this outcome. Therefore, the purpose of this current study was to validate a priori selected predictors for parental satisfaction in their child's perioperative process.

Methods

Eight hundred and ten pediatric patients who underwent tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy surgery and their parents were included in this study. The primary outcome was assessed using a 21‐item …

Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) outcome prediction models, such as Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE), were designed in general critical care populations and their use in obstetric populations is contentious. The aim of the CIPHER (Collaborative Integrated Pregnancy High-dependency Estimate of Risk) study was to develop and internally validate a multivariable prognostic model calibrated specifically for pregnant or recently delivered women admitted for critical care.
Methods: A retrospective observational cohort was created for this study from 13 tertiary facilities across five high-income and six low- or middle-income countries. Women admitted to an ICU for more than 24 h …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Accumulating research has linked Mediterranean diet (MeDi) adherence with slower cognitive decline and reduced Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. However, no study to-date has examined the relationship between MeDi adherence and accumulation of cerebral Aβ-amyloid (Aβ; a pathological hallmark of AD) in older adults. Cognitively normal healthy control participants of the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) Study of Ageing completed the Cancer Council of Victoria Food Frequency Questionnaire at baseline, which was used to construct a MeDi score for each participant (score range 0-9; higher score indicating higher adherence). Cerebral Aβ load was quantified by Pittsburgh Compound B positron emission …

Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

America has become a sports empire over the past century. As the movie Concussion put it, the National Football League has single-handedly taken over the day that used to belong to the church–but this comes at a price. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is a life-altering disease associated with high impact and contact sports that has created a heated debate in our sports-driven society. A study published in 2017 discovered CTE in 177 of 202 former football players–or a staggering 87%. Why do the players continue to play in the NFL if their longevity and well-being are jeopardized?
