Guided Goal Setting: A Feasible Obesity Prevention Behavior Change Strategy For Low-Income Parents With Young Children, Mical K. Shilts, Stephanie L. Sitnic, Lenna Ontai, Marilyn S. Townsend
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
To reduce the risk of pediatric obesity, behaviorally-focused parental education is needed. This study examined the feasibility of guided goal setting in a pediatric obesity prevention intervention for low-income parents of young children. Parents from Head Start participated in a six-week nutrition, activity, and parenting intervention that included guided goal setting (N = 47). At each session, data were collected on goal selection, effort, and attainment. Pre- and postintervention data were collected on nutrition, activity, and child feeding behaviors (n = 24). A subset of parents completed in-depth interviews (n = 20). Parents reported a high level of goal effort …

Hmong-Owned Small Businesses In Minnesota: Implications For Extension Educators And Program Developers, Hye-Young Kim, Hyunjoo Im, Minjung Park, Yoojung Lee
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
This outreach research project was designed to provide beneficial insight regarding Hmong-owned small businesses in Minnesota. Specifically, objectives of the study were to (a) investigate characteristics of successful Hmong-owned small businesses, (b) identify unique problems encountered by Hmong entrepreneurs and small business owners, and (c) develop recommendations for Extension educators and program developers. The theoretical framework for understanding Hmong-owned small businesses was built on three interactive components: opportunity structures, group characteristics, and ethnic strategies. In-depth interviews were conducted to collect the data. A snowball sampling method was used. A Hmong community organization located in the Twin Cities Area was used …
Bringing Work-Life Balance To Extension, Dhruti Patel
Bringing Work-Life Balance To Extension, Dhruti Patel
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Throughout its one hundred plus years of history, the Cooperative Extension System has experienced many changes. Since its beginning, the Extension System has revolutionized nonformal educational approaches and outreach methods. However, these changes have also created issues such as role ambiguity, work-life conflict, work-life spillover, burnout, stress, and work-life imbalance among Extension professionals. There are very few currently existing publications that identify present day work-life balance issues in Extension. Most of such information is dated and irrelevant to current workings of Extension. To give more in-depth insights on this subject, a number of well-established theories, such as compensation, spillover, inter-role …

"They Sacrificed...For Us, We Need To Give Them A Helping Hand Now": Local Reasoning In Combat Veteran's Court, Stacy Lee Burns
Sociology Faculty Works
This study focuses on local reasoning in Combat Veteran’s Court in terms of its combat veteran clientele. The perceived nature of the client-defendants as victim/offenders who have paid a great price to protect us all and whose combat service is directly related to their criminality significantly alters the moral calculus in the court. This altered moral calculus finds its way into the institutional encounters ad hoc, in the local relevancies, particulars, and contingencies of the case-at-hand, and in the prospects for ‘what can happen’, given what has already occurred. Combat Veteran’s Court is working out the fundamental terms of moral …
Do 'Labour' Councils Lower Economic Freedom?, Nicholas Apergis
Do 'Labour' Councils Lower Economic Freedom?, Nicholas Apergis
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Using a panel of the UK counties, spanning the period 2010-2016, this study exploreswhether having a Labour or Conservative council affects a county’s economic freedom.Due to data unavailability of any economic freedom index for the UK counties, the analysis employed direct measures in relevance to three sub-components ofeconomic freedom, i.e. size of government, sound money and the freedom to tradeinternationally. Using a regression discontinuity approach, we find strong evidencethat the political ideology of a council affects all three sub-components of economicfreedom. An implication of this result is that councils appeal to specific groups ofvoters when making policy.

Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting is one of the most common interventional revascularisation procedures used to treat coronary artery disease worldwide. With a wide variability in postoperative cardiac symptoms, identification of symptom trajectories during the 3-month postoperative recovery period may improve clinicians’ abilities to support symptom recovery.
Aims: To identify distinct trajectories of cardiac symptoms seen over time in a cohort of patients during the 3-month post-coronary artery bypass grafting period, and determine clinical characteristics associated with different symptom trajectories postoperatively.
Methods: A prospective trial used the cardiac symptom survey to determine patient symptoms at baseline prior to surgery, and …

Short-term and long-term spaceflight missions can cause immune system dysfunction in astronauts. Recent studies indicate elevated white blood cells (WBC) and polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) in astronaut blood, along with unchanged or reduced lymphocyte counts, and reduced T cell function, during short-(days) and long-(months) term spaceflight. A high PMN to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can acts as a strong predictor of poor prognosis in cancer, and as a biomarker for subclinical inflammation in humans and chronic stress in mouse models, however, the NLR has not yet been identified as a predictor of astronaut health during spaceflight. For this, complete blood cell count …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Career-planning courses are known to be effective career interventions for undergraduates, but their effect on developing alternate career plans was previously unknown. Forming alternate career plans increases the likelihood that students have viable career options available to them upon graduation because it encourages students to realistically consider multiple possibilities. Here we describe a one-term career-planning course developed in the context of an undergraduate biology curriculum. We assessed whether this course promoted development of primary and alternate career plans using a pre/post survey. We saw a significant increase in the percentage of students indicating they had plans aimed at achieving primary …

Understanding Indonesia's Macroeconomic Data: What Do We Know And What Are The Implications?, Susan Sunila Sharma, Lutzardo Tobing, Prayudhi Azwar
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Unit root properties of macroeconomic data are important for both econometric modelling specifications and policy making. The form of variables (whether they are a unit root process) helps determine the correct econometric modelling. Equally, the form of variables helps explain how they react to shocks (both internal and external). Macroeconomic time-series data are often at the forefront of shock analysis and econometric modelling. There is a growing emphasis on research on Indonesia using time-series data; yet, there is limited understanding of data characteristics and shock response of these data. Using an extensive dataset comprising 33 macroeconomic time-series variables, we provide …

Ice And Guano Deposits In El Malpais Lava Tubes: Potential Paleoclimate Archives For The Southwest United States, Dylan S. Parmenter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Three ice cores and one guano core were obtained from lava tubes in El Malpais National Monument, New Mexico, in the Southwest United States. A large hiatus in the Bat Cave guano record, resulting from mining activities in the early 1900's, left us with only ~50 years of data (from AD 1955-2006) to use in analysis. 13C values in guano (-18 to -11.6‰) primarily fall within the range of C4 plants, and likely indicate a tendency of Tadarida brasiliensis to feed on insects over grasslands to the North or South of the park. Variations in 13C values for this period …

Exploring The Decisional Process Behind Alcohol Use: Converging Evidence Across Multiple Theories, Emily T. Noyes
Exploring The Decisional Process Behind Alcohol Use: Converging Evidence Across Multiple Theories, Emily T. Noyes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the etiological and maintaining processes of problematic drinking continues to be a challenge. There has been a growing amount of research focusing on the decisional processes that act to maintain addictive behaviors. Elucidating this underlying process is key to understanding the range of drinking behavior observed among individuals. Rather than relying on one theory, examining overlap between multiple theories of alcohol use may lead to a better understanding of such a process. Using a construct validation approach, this study utilized motivational (Ambivalence Model of Craving), cognitive (Alcohol Outcome Expectancy Theory), and behavioral theories (Behavioral Economics) of alcohol use to …

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
This study explored the types and causes of aggression and the ways teachers treat and react to aggressive children in Jordanian kindergartens in the Irbid district. The sample consisted of the first 20 teachers who responded to the letter of participation sent to them. Data on the causes and types of aggression and prevention strategies were collected by descriptive qualitative design, with semi-structured open-ended interviews, as well as observation of Jordanian kindergarten teachers. The results of the study revealed three themes: factors that shape aggression, sanctions rather than punishment and social learning and culture. Also, the results indicated that social …

In There are few Arabic studies examining the disposition of mindfulness, resilience, and well-being of college students. The purpose of the present study is to examine the factor structure and internal consistency of the Arabic version of mindful attention awareness scale (MAAS) and the brief resilience scale, and to test a model that describes the role of resilience and well-being, in relation to mindfulness and life satisfaction. For this reason, a study of two folds was conducted with the assistance of Umm Al-Quraa University students (n = 562; n = 534). Mindfulness, resilience, flourishing and life satisfaction scales are the …
Structure Of Burnout Among Omani Male And Female Teachers: Invariance Of Structure Across Gender, Maher Abu-Hilal, Said Al Dafri, Hashem Kilani
Structure Of Burnout Among Omani Male And Female Teachers: Invariance Of Structure Across Gender, Maher Abu-Hilal, Said Al Dafri, Hashem Kilani
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
Previous studies have supported the conceptualization that burnout consists of three aspects: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. When the proposed structure of burnout was tested in several studies, these three aspects were confirmed. However, several researchers found that depersonalization consists of two factors rather than one. The first factor is related to the job, while the second factor is related to students. The original factor structure (3-factor model) and the revised structure were tested by few Arab researchers. Recently, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) has been introduced to the Omani educational setting. This study aimed to test the …

Investigating Indonesian Conversation; Approach And Rationale, Michael C. Ewing
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Colloquial Indonesian has often been described in terms of its differences from standard Indonesian, but with such an approach, aspects of informal language usage will go unexplored. This article proposes using the theoretical approach of Interactional Linguistics to more adequately describe the dynamic nature of Indonesian as actually used by its speakers. Interactional Linguistics emphasizes usage-based analysis of natural language data, especially conversation, in order to understand relationships between social actions and language structure. This article gives an overview of Interactional Linguistics, illustrated by two short English examples taken form the literature. It then presents an analysis of two aspects …

The First Standard Grammar Of Malay; George Werndly’S 1736 Maleische Spraakkunst, Waruno Mahdi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
A brief biography of George Henrik Werndly and description of contemporaneous development of linguistics is followed by a perusal of Melchior Leydekker’s and Petrus van der Vorm’s policy of strictly using Classical Malay in Christian publication, that served as basis of Werndly’s work. Then, a detailed perusal of Werndly’s 1736 Malay grammar, in particular the divisions (“books”) on (I) spelling, (II) morphology, and (III) syntax, is illustrated by reproductions of original text passages. Elements of the complicated Latin-script spelling are demonstrated in detail and compared with that of other authors in separate tables. Werndly’s grammatical terminology is considered, and where …

Dongwon Systems established in 1977 to exclusively supply Dongwon tuna cans, the parent company. Instead of its stable management and profits by relying on the parent company, the company was not complacent and started innovating and challenging new markets. Dongwon Systems decided to expand the business area and pioneer new markets so that it becomes the first domestic company to successfully expand into independent businesses other than parent company products. Such success of Dongwon Systems was driven by its differentiated B2B strategies. Exploring Consumers’ Alcoholic-Beverage Type-Specific Drinking Motives, Hyejeung Cho
Asia Marketing Journal
Despite the abundance of research on alcoholic-beverage consumption in the food and beverage marketing literature, research directly assessing and comparing consumers’ psychological motives for drinking different types of alcoholic beverages is relatively limited. There is also a paucity of research comparing drink-type specific consumption motivations in an Asian market. Paying attention to some recent new changes in the alcoholic-beverages market of South Korea, this study investigated South Korean young adult female consumers’ alcoholic-beverage type-specific drinking motives. A self-administered online survey of 340 young adult female drinkers about their alcohol-consumption patterns, alcoholic-drink preferences, involvement with alcohol, and four types of drinking …

Nutrition Counseling For Transgender Individuals On Hormone Replacement Therapy, Sara Elizabeth Zellers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) need to understand the unique needs of the transgender population and be prepared to participate in multi-disciplinary groups to help those transitioning maintain health and well-being. Currently, no studies examine a nutritional intervention specifically with this population. The purpose of this survey was to determine if RDNs are consulted for nutritional counseling either before or during hormone replacement therapy. An anonymous, online survey invitation letter was distributed to the transgender community. It was also posted to a support group on Facebook. Participants had to be over 18 years old, live in the United States, self-identify as …
