The Algorithm Game, Jane Bambauer, Tal Zarsky Nov 2018

The Algorithm Game, Jane Bambauer, Tal Zarsky

Notre Dame Law Review

Most of the discourse on algorithmic decisionmaking, whether it comes in the form of praise or warning, assumes that algorithms apply to a static world. But automated decisionmaking is a dynamic process. Algorithms attempt to estimate some difficult-to-measure quality about a subject using proxies, and the subjects in turn change their behavior in order to game the system and get a better treatment for themselves (or, in some cases, to protest the system.) These behavioral changes can then prompt the algorithm to make corrections. The moves and countermoves create a dance that has great import to the fairness and efficiency …

Life In The Sweatbox, Pamela Foohey, Robert M. Lawless, Katherine Porter, Deborah Thorne Nov 2018

Life In The Sweatbox, Pamela Foohey, Robert M. Lawless, Katherine Porter, Deborah Thorne

Notre Dame Law Review

The time before a person files bankruptcy is sometimes called the financial “sweatbox.” Using original data from the Consumer Bankruptcy Project, we find that people are living longer in the sweatbox before filing bankruptcy than they have in the past. We also describe the depletion of wealth and well-being that defines people’s time in the sweatbox. For those people who struggle for more than two years before filing bankruptcy—the “long strugglers”—their time in the sweatbox is particularly damaging. During their years in the sweatbox, long strugglers deal with persistent collection calls, go without healthcare, food, and utilities, lose homes and …

Effects Of Alternative Seating On Children With Disabilities, Jessica Hoofman Nov 2018

Effects Of Alternative Seating On Children With Disabilities, Jessica Hoofman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children with disabilities in school settings often display problem behavior. These challenging behaviors can be inattention, disruptions in class, difficulties with transitions between tasks, and low task motivation. These types of behaviors can lead to problems for the students with their peers, teachers, and school staff. One way to decrease problem behavior is to implement antecedent manipulations to prevent problem behavior from ever occurring. One type of antecedent manipulation is using alternative seating in the classroom, such as stability balls or stabili-t stools. However, little research has been conducted to evaluate different types of alternative seating, therefore this study used …

Impact Of Nutrition On Inflammation, Tauopathy, And Behavioral Outcomes From Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, Jin Yu, Hong Zhu, Saeid Taheri, William Mondy, Stephen Perry, Mark S. Kindy

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Background: Repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries (rmTBI) are associated with cognitive deficits, inflammation, and stress-related events. We tested the effect of nutrient intake on the impact of rmTBI in an animal model of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) to study the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this model. We used a between group design rmTBI closed head injuries in mice, compared to a control and nutrient-treated groups.

Methods: Our model allows for controlled, repetitive closed head impacts to mice. Briefly, 24-week-old mice were divided into five groups: control, rmTBI, and rmTBI with nutrients (2% of NF-216, NF-316 and NF-416). rmTBI mice received four …

Hate Speech Law: A Philosophical Examination, Eric A. Heinze Nov 2018

Hate Speech Law: A Philosophical Examination, Eric A. Heinze

International Dialogue

Alexander Brown writes as an inter-disciplinary scholar at the intersections of law, ethics, philosophy, and politics. With Hate Speech Law: A Philosophical Examination he justly claims to have explored “numerous principled arguments for and against hate speech law by articulating a collection of key normative principles” (316). This ambitious book identifies and organizes conflicting values within the hate speech controversies. It aims to synthesize deeper questions about core concepts of liberalism, democracy, personhood, dignity, and tolerance with policy concerns about pragmatics and effectiveness. The most seasoned free speech scholars will find points and angles they had not previously considered.

Humanity Without Dignity: Moral Equality, Respect, And Human Rights, David Jason Karp Nov 2018

Humanity Without Dignity: Moral Equality, Respect, And Human Rights, David Jason Karp

International Dialogue

This book aims to reject theoretical approaches that ground human rights in a notion of dignity, understood in terms of an equal rank, transcendental/spiritual quality and/or human capacity for rational agency. It argues instead that the idea of human rights should be grounded in a fundamental moral right of each person not to be treated as inferior. It defends this argument with reference to a substantive account of what it means to be treated as inferior in the relevant sense—dehumanization, instrumentalization, infantilization, objectification and stigmatization—combined with an account of when and why these are wrong. The book says that they …

Famine, Affluence And Morality, Owen G. Mordaunt Nov 2018

Famine, Affluence And Morality, Owen G. Mordaunt

International Dialogue

The foreword of this text is significant because Bill and Melinda Gates, co-chairs of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, make reference to the fact that in more than forty years the world has seen much improvement in curbing poverty. Less than half the world’s population lives in poverty and the proportion of children who die before the age of five has dropped even more. By 1990, it was around 10%, and now it is closer to 5%, even though 5% is still too many when you consider 6.3 million child deaths per year. Most of the deaths, however, are …

Soil-Plant Interface, Carbon Sequestration And The Eco Physiological Growth Of Salsola Imbricata And Zygophyllum Mandaville Using Locally Grown Rhizosphere And Endophytic Bacteria, Nour Elhouda Debouza

Civil and Environmental Theses

Salsola imbricata and Zygophyllum Mandeville are halophytic plants available widely in the UAE. These two species have important environmental services such as sand dune fixation, which will potentially improve plant cover and help tackle the problem of desertification. The species were selected due to their availability and role in the desert environment of the UAE. Plants are also constantly involved in interactions with a wide range of bacteria in the soil. These plant-associated bacteria colonize the rhizosphere (rhizobacteria), and the internal plant tissues (bacterial endophytes). Endophytic bacteria are those capable of colonizing live internal plant tissues which can be isolated …

A Glimpse Into The Ecological Communities Of Camp Greenwood, Rachael Noteboom Nov 2018

A Glimpse Into The Ecological Communities Of Camp Greenwood, Rachael Noteboom

Honors Projects

There is a Presbyterian summer camp near Greenville, Michigan that is home to beautiful wetlands with a variety of wildlife. This camp is nestled between multiple larger connected lakes and surrounded by many large waterfront properties. The number of campers has dwindled in recent years and the council in charge of the land is desperate to sell the most ecologically important sections of the camp, if not all of the land, to developers for multi-million dollar price tags. My dad is on the committee trying to convince the council and the community to save the camp from development.

I surveyed …

This paper focuses on analyzing how this withdrawal could affect the U.S. world leadership position, international (trade) relations, and innovation, and the subsequent impact on the economic development of the …

Accessibility To Reconstructive Plastic Surgery In The United States, Naomi Parker Nov 2018

Accessibility To Reconstructive Plastic Surgery In The United States, Naomi Parker

Honors Projects

This essay attempts to explore accessibility to reconstructive plastic surgery in the United States. Information was compiled from over 40 scholarly articles, as well as personal interviews with reconstructive plastic surgeons. The barriers to access addressed in this essay include cost, co-morbidity, physician bias, geography, and education. Many of the issues discussed are cyclic in nature and thus result in a self-perpetuating multifactorial problem that cannot be addressed with one simple solution. This essay describes possible reasons for why that might be, and ways we can overcome these issues so as to provide better accessibility to reconstructive plastic surgery for …

Hiv Diagnosis Disclosure To Infected Children And Adolescents; Challenges Of Family Caregivers In The Central Region Of Ghana, Anna Hayfron-Benjamin, Dorcas Obiri-Yeboah, Stephen Ayisi-Addo, Peter Mate Siakwa, Sylvia Mupepi

Peer Reviewed Articles

Background

Disclosure of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) to infected older children and adolescents is essential for both personal health maintenance and HIV prevention within the larger population. Non-disclosure of HIV status has been identified as one of the potential barriers to optimum adherence especially in children and adolescents. Like many other countries in the SSA region, Ghana has significant number of children and adolescents infected by HIV, who have increased survival times, due to increased access to ART. However, both family caregivers and healthcare workers face an array of challenges with the disclosure process, including the timing, what information about …

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine

A new study by Fraser et al (2018) urges the use of phylogenetic comparative methods, whenever possible, in analyses of mammalian tooth wear. We are concerned about this for two reasons. First, this recommendation may mislead the research community into thinking that phylogenetic signal is an artifact of some sort rather than a fundamental outcome of the evolutionary process. Secondly, this recommendation may set a precedent for editors and reviewers to enforce phylogenetic adjustment where it may unnecessarily weaken or even directionally alter the results, shifting the emphasis of analysis from common patterns manifested by large clades to rare cases.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) play a key role in future plans for sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery because they have no energy-intensive oxygen transfer requirements and can produce biomethane for renewable energy. Recent research results show that they can meet relatively stringent discharge limits with respect to BOD5 and TSS when treating municipal wastewater primary effluent. Sustainable used water recovery plans should also consider removal of unregulated pollutants. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) represent an important emerging contaminant due to public health concerns surrounding the spread of infections resistant to common antibiotics. Conventional activated sludge processes have demonstrated mixed …

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The burden of chronic headache disorders in the United States is substantial. Some patients are treatment refractory. Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist, provides potent analgesia in subanesthetic doses in chronic pain, and limited data suggest it may alleviate headache in some patients.

METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 61 patients admitted over 3 years for 5 days of intravenous therapy that included continuous ketamine to determine responder rate and patient and ketamine infusion characteristics. Pain ratings at 2 follow-up visits were recorded. An immediate responder was a patient with decrease of 2 points or greater in the …

Managing Prolonged Pain After Surgery: Examining The Role Of Opioids., Eric S. Schwenk, John-Paul J. Pozek, Eugene R. Viscusi

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

A notable minority of patients experience persistent postsurgical pain and some of these patients consequently have prolonged exposure to opioids. Risk factors for prolonged opioid use after surgery include preoperative opioid use, anxiety, substance abuse, and alcohol abuse. The window to intervene and potentially prevent persistent opioid use after surgery is short and may best be accomplished by both surgeon and anesthesiologist working together. Anesthesiologists in particular are well positioned in the perioperative surgical home model to affect multiple aspects of the perioperative experience, including tailoring intraoperative medications and providing consultation for possible discharge analgesic regimens that can help minimize …

Implementation Of A Multimodal Hand Hygiene Intervention At A Rural Critical Access Hospital, Amy J. Hopp Nov 2018

Implementation Of A Multimodal Hand Hygiene Intervention At A Rural Critical Access Hospital, Amy J. Hopp

Doctoral Projects

Healthcare acquired infections are the most common complication of hospital care in the United States, with subsequent negative implications on the healthcare system. While hand hygiene has long been considered the single most important and cost-effective way of reducing healthcareacquired infections, compliance among healthcare professionals is low, and most efforts to improve it fail. When compared to single-component hand hygiene interventions, research demonstrates that tailored multimodal interventions are an effective way to improve compliance with hand hygiene practices among healthcare professionals. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project focused on implementing a multimodal hand hygiene intervention, tailored to fit the specific …
