Management And Security Of Iot Systems Using Microservices, Tharun Theja Kammara

Master's Projects

Devices that assist the user with some task or help them to make an informed decision are called smart devices. A network of such devices connected to internet are collectively called as Internet of Things (IoT). The applications of IoT are expanding exponentially and are becoming a part of our day to day lives. The rise of IoT led to new security and management issues. In this project, we propose a solution for some major problems faced by the IoT devices, including the problem of complexity due to heterogeneous platforms and the lack of IoT device monitoring for security and …

The Role Of Resilience Among K-12 Principals And Administrators Leading Transformational Change, Paige Evans Wescott Dec 2018

The Role Of Resilience Among K-12 Principals And Administrators Leading Transformational Change, Paige Evans Wescott

Education Dissertations

Abstract

The United States government holds high expectations for principals and administrators, as they are responsible for enacting significant change to actualize school improvement and meet national agendas. Schools have specific characteristics that make change extremely challenging to implement, and it is within this context that fostering resilience holds promise. This study was a quantitative, correlational study that looked critically at the relationship between self-perceived resilience and self-perceived transformational leadership among US principals and administrators in K-12 settings. Peer-reviewed research studies addressing resilience and transformational leadership in K-12 education have been minimal, although similar questions in research continue to be …

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of airways mediated by T-helper 2 (Th2) cells involving complex signaling pathways. Although resveratrol has previously been shown to attenuate allergic asthma, the role of miRNA in this process has not been studied. We investigated the effect of resveratrol on ovalbumin-induced experimental allergic asthma in mice. To that end, BALB/c mice were immunized with ovalbumin (OVA) intraperitoneally followed by oral gavage of vehicle (OVA-veh) or resveratrol (100 mg/kg body) (OVA-res). On day 7, the experimental groups received intranasal challenge of OVA followed by 7 days of additional oral gavage of vehicle or resveratrol. At …

Exploring The Extent To Which Universities In Ghana Deploy Knowledge Management Processes In Their Activities, De-Graft Johnson Dei, Thomas Bingle Van Der Walt

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Universities are knowledge-based organisations. They are using knowledge as a key resource and for competitive advantage. Knowledge management practices seems to be suitable for universities because they possess the conducive environment and systems. This study sought to assess the extent to which KM was practiced at the universities and the mechanisms and initiatives implemented to promote KM processes at the universities. The study adopted the survey and mixed method research approach to collect data from 118 respondents from three universities in Ghana (public, private and professional). Questionnaires (consisting of blend of closed and open-ended questions) were used to collect primary …

Communication, Democracy, And Intelligentsia, Dmitri N. Shalin Dec 2018

Communication, Democracy, And Intelligentsia, Dmitri N. Shalin

Sociology Faculty Research

In the early 1990s, a group of Russian and American scholars teamed up to investigate the impact of Gorbachev’s reform on Soviet society, focusing especially on the role the intelligentsia played in fomenting glasnost and perestroika. Results of this collaborative study were published in a volume Russian Culture at the Crossroads: Paradoxes of Postcommunist Consciousness (Shalin, 1996a). The contributors worked on the assumption that perestroika was an irreversible achievement, that distortions the reforms wrought in Russian society would be smoothed out over time. Today, this assumption appears overoptimistic. After nearly twenty years in power, Vladimir Putin dismantled key democratic institutions, …

Modeling Reveals The Dependence Of Hippocampal Neurogenesis Radiosensitivity On Age And Strain Of Rats, Eliedonna Cacao, Sidath Kapukotuwa, Francis A. Cucinotta

Health Physics and Diagnostic Sciences Faculty Research

Cognitive dysfunction following radiation treatment for brain cancers in both children and adults have been correlated to impairment of neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Various species and strains of rodent models have been used to study radiation-induced changes in neurogenesis and these investigations have utilized only a limited number of doses, dose-fractions, age and time after exposures conditions. In this paper, we have extended our previous mathematical model of radiation-induced hippocampal neurogenesis impairment of C57BL/6 mice to delineate the time, age, and dose dependent alterations in neurogenesis of a diverse strain of rats. To the best of our knowledge, …

Prenatal Risk For Asd: Fetal Cortisol Exposure Predicts Child Autism-Spectrum-Disorder Symptoms, Sheena Ram, Mariann A. Howland, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is multifactorial, complex, and likely involves interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. With respect to environmental influences, a growing literature implicates intrauterine experiences in the origin of this pervasive developmental disorder. In this prospective longitudinal study, we examined the hypothesis that fetal exposure to maternal cortisol may confer ASD risk. In addition, because ASD is four times more prevalent in males than in females, and because sexually dimorphic responses to intrauterine experiences are commonly observed, we examined whether or not any associations differ by fetal sex. Maternal plasma cortisol was measured at …

Motivirani Zaposleni So Zaneseni Zaposleni: Vpliv Notranje Motivacije Na Zanos, Darija Aleksić

Economic and Business Review

Flow experience is associated with positive consequences in the work environment that promote commitment to work and organizational spontaneity, thereby contributing to the achievement of organizational goals, such as creativity and organizational performance. The aim of this paper is thus to answer the question of how to increase the frequency of flow at work. Specifically, this paper examines the influence of intrinsic motivation on flow experience. The results of an online experiment (n = 126) show that intrinsic motivation has a strong positive effect on two dimensions of flow: the balance between challenges and skills and the merger of action …

The Influence Of Nutrient (N And P) Enrichment And Ratios On Phytoplankton Abundance In Keunekai Waters, Wehisland, Indonesia, Ulung Jantama Wisha, Koko Ondara, Ilham Ilham

Makara Journal of Science

The Keunekai waters around Weh Island, Indonesia, have become a prone coastal area because of degradation from climate anomalies and anthropogenic pressure. The high level of coral mortality caused by mass bleaching and fish bombing several years ago may have led to the deterioration of the water conditions and the disruption of the biogeo-chemical cycle, resulting in potential nutrient enrichment and algae blooms (eutrophication). This study aimed to de-termine the influence of nutrient ratios on phytoplankton abundance and monitor the existing waterconditions aroundKeunekai. Spectrophotometry analysis was used to determine the concentrations of the nutrients, and the Sedgewick-Rafter counting method was …

Makara Journal of Science

Antigen sub units for vaccine studies are typically isolated from recombinant proteins in an expression system. However, not all protein expression systems are used to express the specific protein. In this study,we optimized the pGEX system combined with the modified protein refolding to express and isolate M. tuberculosis proteins, especially proteins that are expressed as an inclusion body. Resuscitation promoting factor B (RpfB) protein is one of the Resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf) family of proteins that has been studied for its ability to induce cellular immunity in animal tests. Silico analyses demonstrate how RpfB is included in cell wall and …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

User experience (UX) refers to users' emotions, experiences and behavior when using products, systems and services. Traditionally, UX is applied to assess changes with websites and operating systems, but libraries have started applying the same usability principles to their physical spaces and services. NMC´s Horizon Report 2017 estimates that valuing the user experience is on-trend the coming years. Used as a set of tools in library development, UX methods enables us to understand and improve library users' experiences. Mixing qualitative and quantitative techniques to obtain deeper insights into user needs: A key point being to discover needs users themselves are …

Studio 55: Library Makerspace With A Difference, Gillian Barthorpe, Hans Tommy Dec 2018

Studio 55: Library Makerspace With A Difference, Gillian Barthorpe, Hans Tommy

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

AUT Library launched Studio 55, the Library Makerspace in 2017, the first in a New Zealand university library. While the concept of a library makerspace is not unique our approach has been a little different. We have adopted a more ‘low-tech’ approach in that we don’t have a 3D printer and other more ‘hi-tech’ equipment that is fairly standard in most makerspaces. It is a highly visible space that is open to all to ‘think, make, do’ and share skills, ideas and work together across disciplines. It is designed to engage the community in new ways of working and learning …

Considerations In The Design Of ‘New’ Academic Library Spaces In Kenya, Azenath N. Ateka Dec 2018

Considerations In The Design Of ‘New’ Academic Library Spaces In Kenya, Azenath N. Ateka

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Kenyan university education system has experienced tremendous growth and expansion in the recent past. One major requirement for accreditation by the Commission for University Education is that a university must have a library befitting its student population and the diversity of its degree programs. To qualify for accreditation, demonstrate quality and attract students, many universities have had to put up new library buildings or expand/restructure existing ones. While it may be obvious that this is a chance to design the buildings with the 21st century learner in mind, many libraries continue to borrow and extend the traditional library model, …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

During the IATUL Conference 2017, the authors had many productive exchanges about similari-ties and differences in Swedish and German higher-education libraries. Since research data management (RDM) is an emerging topic on both sides of the Baltic Sea, we find it valuable to compare strategies, services, and workflows to learn from each other’s practices. Aim: In this talk, we aim to compare the practices and needs of small-scale data producers in engineering and the humanities. In particular, we try to answer the following research questions: What kind of data do the small-scale data producers produce? What do these producers need in …

Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund Dec 2018

Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Challenges occur as research typically require “just in time” library support. The evolution of a research project may lead to sudden changes in coordination between different phases or steps in the project. Consequentially, the need for flexible research support conflicts the possibilities for long-term resource planning and coordination in the library. Moreover, these consequences will enlarge in a situation with resource scarcity. The aim of my presentation is to address some challenges posed by the time-logic inherent in research projects, based on experiences from the literature search team at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University (formerly HIOA, Oslo and Akershus University …

Using Technology To Teach Students Information Literacy Skills: An Online Module For First-Year Students At The University Of Johannesburg (Uj), Elize Du Toit

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Being information literate is a basic requirement for 21st-century learning and assessment. As the shift in 21st-century education moves towards e-learning and the use of technology in education, libraries have to recognise that their role to provide ‘traditional’ support to teaching, learning and research needs to change to support web-based learning. This shift in education necessitates libraries to look at new ways to enhance students’ academic experience by incorporating web-based technology to train students in information literacy skills. The UJ library developed an online information literacy module to support students’ information literacy skills. A pilot study was conducted to analyse …

Someone Has To Pay: The Global Sustainability Coalition For Open Science Services (Scoss), Martin Borchert, Vanessa Proudman

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Open Access (OA) and Open Science (OS) movement is gaining momentum with an increasing number of scholarly outputs openly and freely available to researchers and the community. OA and OS cannot however, be free for everyone. Someone has to pay for the infrastructure and there has to be a supporting economy. While many commercial publishers are charging for OA, there are many OA and OS infrastructure providers baring the cost of providing infrastructure. Without funding, essential services that many are dependent upon to implement government and funder OA policies worldwide, are at risk of service degradation, reduced availability and …

F.A.I.R. Is Fair For Research: Australian Initaitves To Improve Openness In The Scholarly Communications Environment, Jill Benn, Martin Borchert

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Disruptive changes are transforming the scholarly communications environment. In an era of false reporting and fake news, quality information and verifiable data is essential. However, much of the world’s best publicly funded research remains hidden behind commercial publisher paywalls. Unlocking this research can help solve the world’s greatest research and social challenges, and result in a more informed society. This paper will explore how, within the Australian context, librarians are seeking to make research more findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). The Australasian Open Access Strategy Group (AOASG) and the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) have worked on a …
