Britishers In Two Worlds: Maltese Immigrants In Detroit And Toronto, 1919-1960, Marc Anthony Sanko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation looks at the immigration of Maltese laborers and their families to North America, chiefly Detroit and Toronto, between 1919 and 1960. While the Maltese migration followed similar patterns to other Southern European Catholic or skilled laborers in general, it is different in both their timing and colonial association. Most migrants came to North America in the late 19th and early 20th century, but the Maltese migration occurs largely after World War I and extends through the 1960s---the exact time frame of immigration restrictions imposed by both the governments of the United States and Canada. How the Maltese immigrants …
Using Artistic Process To Provide Outlets Of Communication, Understanding, And Healing To Improve The Well Being Of Selected Learners, Sarah Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Public schools in America follow a carefully structured pattern tied directly to the societies and cultures from within. While this structure may create a positive and familiar learning environment for some, others who are unfamiliar with the societal and cultural norms within public school structures, may be left behind. Some learners have simple language barriers that exclude them from activities as well as others during the school day; some choose silence out of fear or embarrassment from unknown circumstances; while others are labeled as Special Education and are not able to speak to others verbally as a "normal" child would. …

Mathematical Epidemiology Goes To College, Meredith L. Greer, Ella Livesay
Mathematical Epidemiology Goes To College, Meredith L. Greer, Ella Livesay
All Faculty Scholarship
Every year waves of illnesses sweep through college campuses. This seems a natural result of sleep-deprived college students living, working, and playing together. Such outbreaks suggest questions: How many people will become infected? How can illnesses be contained? And crucially: How is mathematics involved? Mathematical epidemiology is the study of modeling diseases, often using compartmental models. We can use such models to learn from past outbreaks and investigate theoretical future outbreaks. In this article we present models that were inspired by two real-life outbreaks at a small residential college campus: H1N1 influenza in 2009 and, surprisingly, mumps in 2016.

Uav Modeling And Simulation At Normal And Abnormal Conditions, Mofetoluwa Fagbemi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The main objective of this thesis is to develop new capabilities within the West Virginia University (WVU) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) simulation environment for the design and analysis of fault tolerant control laws on small sized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). An aerodynamic model for an electric powered UAV is developed using a vortex lattice method implemented within the computational design package Tornado. One-dimensional look-up tables are developed for the main stability and control derivatives, which are then used to calculate linear aerodynamic forces and moments for the nonlinear aircraft equations of motion. Flight data are used for model verification and …
Switching From Vitamin K Antagonists To Non-Vitamin K Oral Anticoagulants, Drug-Drug Interactions, And Health Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Atrial Fibrillation, Xue Feng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
AF patients with a high risk of stroke are recommended to be treated with oral anticoagulants. Given that the recently available non--vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) received favorable or non-inferior efficacy and safety outcomes as compared with warfarin in the clinical trials, do not require frequent blood drawings, and have fewer drug-drug interactions (DDIs) than warfarin, working-age adults with AF are likely to switch from warfarin to NOACs. However, NOACs may still interact with many drugs that are known to increase the risk of bleeding, which may, in turn, elevate the economic and healthcare burden. The three aims of this …

International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Twenty-first Century work life is portrayed by Hirschhorn (1997) as, new conditions of work [that] simultaneously pull us toward interdependence while pushing us toward estrangement. This is the new dialectic of the post-industrial age (p. 90). Dysfunctional families, socio-economic imbalances, and political instability caused by inapt leaders warrants to explore the impact of organizations on humanity. Great minds shape technology, innovation, research and development in these organizations. In return, big organizations drive the economy, politics, global warming, and business competition. Though many organizations invest in retention policies, employees have less loyalty, seek better compensation and work conditions. A concern for …

Servant-Leadership In Higher Education In Saudi Arabia, Areej Abdullah Shafai
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Saudi Arabia is seeking to create more effective leaders who meet the highest needs of individuals without using their authority to complete tasks. When looking deeply at servant leadership approach in higher education in Saudi Arabia, no known studies reflected what is really happening in practice with Saudi higher educational leaders in terms of defining and providing service. To better understand their leadership methods, it is significant to address their ways of employing authority in their day-to-day operations since power is tightly linked to leadership. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of servant-leadership as it applies …

Watching You Watching Me: Lateral Surveillance In Singapore, Yan Song Lee
Watching You Watching Me: Lateral Surveillance In Singapore, Yan Song Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historically, top-down surveillance -- surveillance from the state and other organizations -- has dominated social life, but not anymore. Technological advances drove down the price of surveillance equipment which aided in the proliferation of devices such as dashboard cameras. The widespread use of affordable surveillance equipment gave rise to the phenomenon of lateral surveillance, whereby laypersons can employ surveillance techniques to monitor individuals around them. The Singapore metropolis provides an excellent example with the ubiquitous use of dashboard cameras for cars today. In this research, I focus on Singaporean rideshare drivers who are simultaneously subjected to traditional forms of top-down …

Marine litter is a global challenge and society plays an important role via lifestyles and behaviour, including policy support. We analysed public perceptions of marine litter and contributing factors, using data from 1133 respondents across 16 European countries. People reported high levels of concern about marine litter, and the vast majority (95%) reported seeing litter when visiting the coast. The problem was attributed to product and packaging design and behaviour rather than lack of facilities or accidental loss of items. Retailers, industry and government were perceived as most responsible, but also least motivated and competent to reduce marine litter, whereas …

Turning The Tide On Trash: Empowering European Educators And School Students To Tackle Marine Litter, Bonny L. Hartley, Sabine Pahl, Matthew Holland, Iro Alampei, Joana M. Veiga, Richard C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine litter is a global environmental problem, and working with educators and school students has much potential to facilitate greater public understanding of the solutions and to enable action. This research examined two new educational activities designed to empower European educators and school students to engage with the topic of marine litter, particularly focusing on behavior and on known determinants of behavior rather than knowledge alone. In Study 1, 120 educators participated in an online training course on marine litter, and completed a pre- and post-course questionnaire to assess change. After participating in the course, educators felt significantly more skillful …

Globally, non-native species (NNS) have been introduced and now often entirely replace native species in captive aquaculture; in part, a result of a perceived greater resilience of NSS to climate change and disease. Here, the effects of ocean acidification and warming on metabolic rate, feeding rate, and somatic growth was assessed using two co-occurring species of oysters – the introduced Pacific oyster Magallana gigas (formerly Crassostrea gigas), and native flat oyster Ostrea edulis. Biological responses to increased temperature and pCO2 combinations were tested, the effects differing between species. Metabolic rates and energetic demands of both species were increased by …

All contemporary general anaesthetics have been convincingly shown to produce neurotoxic effects in at least some experimental animal models, and many of the underlying mechanisms have been identified.1 Whilst the human relevance of these observations is still under intense scrutiny, the elaboration of protective strategies along with the development of new ‘non-toxic’ anaesthetic drug regimens have been identified as rational research directions to alleviate potential neurotoxicity.2 In this edition of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, Atluri and colleagues3 report preliminary animal experiments for a novel neurosteroid hypnotic. They describe the compound as ‘safe’ in comparison to ketamine, and suggest that …

In this edition of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, Terblanche and colleagues1 describe their preliminary clinical experiences with the LMA® Gastro™, a modified supraglottic airway designed for airway maintenance and security during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Thirty anaesthetists successfully deployed the device in 290/292 patients. Endoscopy was achieved in 98%.Clinicians are here presented with a new device designed for a single clinical circumstance (albeit a common one). We should, therefore, ask whether the problem that the device sets out to solve is real, whether the device addresses it effectively, and reflect whether the apparatus is a useful addition to the clinical …

BACKGROUND: Globally, >300 million patients have surgery annually, and ≤20% experience adverse postoperative events. We studied the impact of both cardiac and noncardiac adverse events on 1-year disability-free survival after noncardiac surgery. METHODS: We used the study cohort from the Evaluation of Nitrous oxide in Gas Mixture of Anesthesia (ENIGMA-II) trial, an international randomized trial of 6992 noncardiac surgical patients. All were ≥45 years of age and had moderate to high cardiac risk. The primary outcome was mortality within 1 postoperative year. We defined 4 separate types of postoperative adverse events. Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) included myocardial infarction (MI), …

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. In the extant literature some researchers have agreed upon the nature of inter-relationship between lean and green as synergistic whereas other have termed it as coincidental or even dichotomous. We submit that the inconclusiveness in the relationship between lean and green arises from not investigating it from a holistic standpoint. In this study, we address this gap by adjudging the relationship of lean systems with holistic supply chain context which includes sourcing, production and logistics. The proposed hypotheses are grounded in the resource-based view of the firm. We examine the relationship in the context of emerging …

Control Of Pancreatic Β-Cell Bioenergetics., Charles Affourtit, Ben Alberts, Jonathan Barlow, Je Carré, Anthony G. Wynne
School of Biomedical Sciences
The canonical model of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) by pancreatic β-cells predicts a glucose-induced rise in the cytosolic ATP/ADP ratio. Such bioenergetic sensitivity to metabolic fuel is unusual as it implies that ATP flux is governed, to a significant extent, by ATP supply, while it is predominantly demand-driven in other cell types. Metabolic control is generally shared between different processes, but potential control of ATP consumption over β-cell bioenergetics has been largely ignored to date. The present paper offers a brief overview of experimental evidence that demonstrates ATP flux control by glucose-fuelled oxidative phosphorylation. Based on old and new data, …
