Peripheral Arterial Disease Increases The Risk Of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria Andamputation In Diabetic Foot Infections, Pinar Aysert Yildiz, Tuğba Özdi̇l, Murat Di̇zbay, Özlem Güzel Tunçcan, Kenan Hizel
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiological profile and resistance rates of diabetic foot infections (DFIs) and to determine the effect of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) on the microbiology, clinical condition, and treatment outcomes. Materials and methods: Characteristics, laboratory and imaging data, and the treatment modalities of patients admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of DFI (PEDIS classification 3-4) during 2005-2016 were analyzed according to the presence of PAD. Results: Of 112 patients who were included in this study, 86 (76.8%) had PAD. Patients with PAD were older and had higher amputation rates (P < 0.05). A microbiological profile of patients revealed a predominance of gram-positive bacteria (57.1%). Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp. were the most frequently encountered bacteria. Incidence of Pseudomonas spp. infection was higher in the PAD group (P < 0.05). Of all patients, 24.1% had multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms in their wound cultures. Presence of MDR bacteria in patients with PAD was 4.9-fold higher than that in patients without PAD (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This retrospective study indicates that PAD has a significant role, especially in elderly patients with DFIs. Patients should be promptly evaluated and treated for PAD to prevent infections with resistant microorganisms and limb loss.

Liquid biopsies are a potentially rich store of biochemical information that can be linked to an individual’s response to therapeutic treatments, including radiotherapy, and which may ultimately play a role in the individualization of treatment regimens. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) can be used for the biochemical profiling of the individual, but also, being living cells, can provide insights into the individuals response to ionizing radiation exposure.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the benefits as well as the limitations of utilizing photopolymer materials in the design of holograms that are responsive to changes in their environment, such as changes in the concentration of a specific substance, temperature, and pressure. Three different case studies are presented, including both surface and volume phase holograms, in order to demonstrate the flexibility in the approach of utilizing holographic photopolymers for the design of sensors and interactive optical devices. First, a functionalized surface relief hologram is demonstrated to operate as an optical sensor for the detection of metal ions …

Theoretical Modeling And Design Of Photonic Structures In Zeolite Nanocomposites For Gas Sensing. Part Ii: Volume Gratings, Dervil Cody, Izabela Naydenova
Articles
The suitability of holographic structures fabricated in zeolite nanoparticle-polymer composite materials for gas sensing applications has been investigated. Theoretical modelling of the sensor response (i.e. change in hologram readout due to a change in refractive index modulation or thickness as a result of gas adsorption) of different sensor designs was carried out using Raman-Nath theory and Kogelnik’s Coupled Wave Theory. The influence of a range of parameters on the sensitivity of holographically-recorded surface and volume photonic structures has been studied, namely hologram geometry, hologram thickness and spatial frequency, reconstruction wavelength, and zeolite nanoparticle refractive index. From this, the optimum fabrication …

Introduction Antenatal care (ANC) is a major public health intervention aimed at ensuring safe pregnancy outcomes. In Nigeria, the recommended minimum of four times ANC attendance is underutilized. This study investigates the prevalence and factors associated with underutilization of ANC services with a focus on the differences between rural and urban residences in Nigeria. Methods We analyzed the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey dataset with adjustment for the sampling weight and the cluster design of the survey. The prevalence of underutilization of ANC was assessed using frequency tabulation while associated factors were examined using Chi-Square test and multivariable logistic …
Reducing The Confusion And Clicks And Its Impact On Learning, Rebecca Scriven, Carol Crevacore
Reducing The Confusion And Clicks And Its Impact On Learning, Rebecca Scriven, Carol Crevacore
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
With the increased importance placed on first-year university units to transition, retain and engage new students, there is a need to carefully design the navigation within a unit of study. The importance of reducing confusion for new students and the cognitive load placed on them during their first experience of university learning may assist with retention. This paper presents a collaborative project between a first-year Unit Coordinator and Senior Learning Designer to redesign the navigation of a core communications unit in a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree. The purpose was to reduce the confusion over what was required of the …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the anaesthetic effects on young hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) of xylazine-ketamine (XK) compared to diazepam-ketamine (DK). Six healthy young male hamadryas baboons were first premedicated with xylazine HCl (0.5 mg/kg, IM) and anaesthetised 20 min later with ketamine (10 mg/kg, IM). After a 10-day washout period, the hamadryas baboons were premedicated with diazepam (1 mg/kg, IM) and anaesthetised 20 min later with ketamine (10 mg/kg, IM). The onset, duration, and the depth of anaesthesia were determined by recording palpebral, corneal, and jaw reflexes. The results showed a significant decrease in heart rate …

The aim of this study was to investigate the preference of side and standing in relationship with milking characteristics of crossbred cows in a double-sided herringbone milking parlour. Seventy-two crossbred cows were milked in an 8 × 2 low-line automated herringbone milking parlour having automatic cluster removal settings for 45 milking sessions. There was considerable variation among individuals in the consistency of side choice (χ$^{2}$ = 1.414, P = 0.234). The consistency score of crossbred cows showed that many cows had a strong tendency to enter the parlour on the same side during consecutive milkings. The side preference was found …

Ractopamine hydrochloride (R) is commonly used in the livestock industry, mainly in pork and beef, to improve feed efficiency and productivity. In the present study, the use of R at different doses (20 ppm, 30 ppm, or 40 ppm) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of guinea pigs (male and female) was explored with a view to achieving greater use of this species for human consumption. Thirty-two clinically healthy guinea pigs at an average age of 5 weeks were used. The daily gain, feed over gain ratio, Kleiber ratio, carcass yield, and muscle thickness of the thigh in millimeters were …

Pestiviruses, which are distributed worldwide, may cause losses in sheep and goat populations. The current seroprevalence and circulation of pestiviruses in small ruminants of the South Marmara Region of Turkey were investigated. A total of 607 blood samples were collected from 22 different flocks in 4 different provinces, and 24 necropsy materials were investigated. Pestivirus seroprevalence in sheep and goats was determined by virus neutralization test against the NADL strain of bovine viral diarrhea virus. The mean antibody titer was 3.5, while the overall seropositivity rate was 32.78% (199/607). Seronegativity was markedly more prevalent in goats. The mean detected antibody …
