Effects Of Unweathered Or Soil Weathered Copper-Based Nanoparticles And Compounds On Soil Grown Bell Pepper (Capsicum Annuum) And Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea) Plants, Swati Rawat
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) find large scale industrial application because of their promising chemical, physical, electrical, magnetic, optical, and electronic properties. Copper-based ENP are used as gas sensors, in catalysts, electronics, semi-conductors, and in agriculture. They have been useful as agricultural amendments in the form of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers because of their antifungal and antibacterial properties. They also find application in electronics and sensors used in precision agriculture. Due to their massive production and use, ENPs are likely to be ubiquitous in the environment around us in the near future. Application of biosolids for fertilization and water from wastewater treatment …

Practice Guidelines For Continuous Pulse Oximetry Monitoring For Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients, Bridgette Smart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As the rate of obesity has increased in the United States to include approximately 40% of the adult population, there has been a corresponding rise in the number of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The OSA population is at risk for adverse perioperative respiratory depression. Continuous pulse oximetry monitoring is indicated for these patients upon discharge from the recovery room into other treatment settings and when cared for by telemetry or by trained hospital staff in the patient's room. The practice question was whether an evidence-based practice guideline could be developed to help ensure safe postoperative monitoring of patients …

This experimental memoir is a collection of lyric essays that address the link between place (bodies of water in particular) and identity. They also examine my experiences being married to (and eventually divorcing) a man with a traumatic brain injury that led to drug addiction, domestic violence, and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Formative Evaluation Of The Health Belief Model As A Valid Theoretical Framework For "The Diabetes Garage", Renee Alexandria Orrantia
Formative Evaluation Of The Health Belief Model As A Valid Theoretical Framework For "The Diabetes Garage", Renee Alexandria Orrantia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background & Significance. Recent studies estimate the prevalence of diabetes among Hispanics/Latinos (H/L) to be 16.9% and 18.7% among H/L men specifically. To address this disparity, the Diabetes Garage (DG), a culturally tailored Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSME/S) program, was designed to engage H/L men in diabetes self-management. Because seriousness of diabetes best predicts mens engagement in self-care, the Health Belief Model (HBM) was chosen as the central theoretical framework. The HBM hypothesizes that the cue to action (i.e. DG) increases mens perceived diabetes risk/severity/threat, self-efficacy in self-care, and health outcomes. Aims & Objectives. This research was aimed to …

Empowering Internal Stakeholders Through The Dissemination Of Useful Information: A Review Of Crisis Management Concepts, Patricia I. Fusch, Janie A. Hall, Gene E. Fusch
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
In this article, we define crisis management as not only a problem, but also an opportunity for leaders to be flexible, creative, and innovative that contributes to social change. In the past, organizational leaders often looked at crisis management as a quick fix or stopgap to business as usual. Empowering internal stakeholders and disseminating useful information that is relevant, valid, timely, and reliable to people within the organization can lead to crisis resolution at the closest point of action and contribute to social change. We look at the primary and secondary stakeholders and stewardship of the employees during the …

Many children in need do not receive the mental health services they require. This is true with psychoeducational services in schools, where a shortage of school psychologists has been identified. An estimated 15% of all students struggle with attentional or learning difficulties that are unassessed and unaddressed, largely due to problems with access to psychoeducational evaluations. Remote, online psychoeducational evaluations have the potential to decrease this access problem by assisting school psychologists with their evaluation workload. The present study evaluated the equivalence of a remote, online administration procedure for the Woodcock-Johnson IV cognitive and achievement tests with traditional, in-person administration. …

Oneself As Another: Hermeneutics And Personality Assessment, Marvin W. Acklin
Archives of Assessment Psychology
The scientific and philosophical background of personality assessment is examined, including review of hermeneutic methods in the human sciences. Following a keyword search and psychological test usage survey, it was concluded that the nomothetic scientific orientation predominates in forensic psychology. A topic debated since the middle 19th century, the triumph of the nomothetic has implications for personality assessment models, interpretive methods, and description of human lives. This paper contextualizes personality assessment in 19th and 20th century hermeneutical philosophy, including the status of the nomothetic/idiographic divide. Hermeneutic philosophy--represented in the work of Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger, Bultmann, Gadamer, and Ricoeur--offers rich and …

Comparability Of Mmpi-2_Rf With The Mmpi-2 In Assessing Psychiatric Patients: A Shortfall, Carlo Leone, Stefano Mosticoni, Federica Iannella, Massimo Biondi, James N. Butcher
Archives of Assessment Psychology
Assessment of mental health problems with MMPI instruments has a long tradition in Italy beginning in 1948. This study examined how the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) compares with MMPI-2 in evaluating Italian psychiatric patients. We obtained a sample of psychiatric inpatients that were referred to the University Hospital in Rome, Italy who were administered the MMPI-2. This study examines the utility of the MMPI-2-RF, and how its performance compares with MMPI-2 scales in this contemporary clinical sample. We examined whether the new MMPI-2-RF scales are sensitive to mental health symptoms that are addressed by the original MMPI …

Archives of Assessment Psychology
Leone, Mosticoni, Iannella, Biondi, and Butcher’s (2018) comparison of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF in a clinical sample falls well short of its goals. On the basis of analyses conducted with a sample of patients, the authors conclude that the MMPI-2-RF is less sensitive to psychopathology and is susceptible to gender bias. However, their study fails to meet basic requirements for sound research methodology and reporting of research findings. The findings reported are inconsistent with or contradict the authors’ conclusions, many of which have already been rebutted in previous publications, which they ignored. Leone et al.’s (2018) discussion fails to acknowledge …

Improving Quality Through Nursing Participation At Bedside Rounds In A Pediatric Acute Care Unit, Rafael Acal Jimenez
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Implementation of bedside rounds enhances communication and collaboration between physicians and nurses, resulting in improved clinical outcomes. Yet, the literature demonstrates that it remains difficult for nurses to attend rounds if they don't know when they are happening. This project aimed to: increase nurses' presence, participation and contribution at bedside rounds in a pediatric acute care unit, enhance clinical teamwork and collaboration, and improve quality outcomes. Nurses carried a pager so that physicians could alert them of rounds. Perception of teamwork and collaboration was assessed via surveys pre- and post- intervention as well as the National Database of Nursing Quality …

Trauma Informed Brief Mindfulness Training: A New Adaptation For Homeless Women With Ptsd, Brighid Gannon
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Women and children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population and the United States has more homeless women than any other Industrialized nation (Committee on Health Care for Underserved Women, 2013). Many homeless women experience lifelong trauma and are increasingly at risk for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Goodman et al, 1995). Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a gold standard treatment for PTSD, homeless women face a variety of barriers when trying to access this type of care including cost, stigma, and geographic inaccessibility (Dutton et al, 2013). Mindfulness may be a good treatment alternative because once …

Developing A Next Generation Strategic Structure For Sustainable Safety Culture: Utilizing "Leading A Culture Of Safety: A Blueprint For Success", Kami Rapp
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
During the first generation of patient safety, healthcare leaders began to learn about, assess, and try to improve their organization’s safety culture. However, they never developed or agreed upon an evidenced-based tool containing proven strategies to improve safety culture (NPSF, 2015). Though they were successful in making incremental steps toward improvement, safety is not currently an organizational value completely embedded within the healthcare industry (ACHE & NPSF LLI, 2017). As such, the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Lucian Leape Institute, a part of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, partnered with the American College of Healthcare Executives to write “Leading a Culture …

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Background: On May 15, 2018, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved once daily tenofovir/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) for use as preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for adolescents (weighing greater than 35kgs) engaging in high-risk sexual behavior (Gilead, 2018). This decision was largely based on the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN) 113 which demonstrated that PrEP was well tolerated among the adolescents, age 15-17, enrolled in the study (Hosek, 2017). The use of TDF/FTC for PrEP in adults (18 and older) was approved by the FDA in 2012 after its safety and efficacy had been demonstrated in multiple international clinical trials (FDA, …
Novel Methods Of Utilization, Elimination, And Description Of The Distortion Power In Electrical Circuits, Hussein Kamal Anwer Al-Bayaty
Novel Methods Of Utilization, Elimination, And Description Of The Distortion Power In Electrical Circuits, Hussein Kamal Anwer Al-Bayaty
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Firstly, this thesis investigates the electrical power harmonics in an attempt to utilize harmonic current and its distortion power in a novel idea to reconvert the distortion power into useful power. This is done, in order to feed different DC or AC loads in single and three-phase power system by using passive or active filters and accordingly, develop a new topology of hybrid active power filter (HAPF). In addition, this circuit can be considered as a power factor corrector (PFC) because it reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) and improves the power factor (PF). Secondly, this thesis works on a …

AbstractObjectiveRare genetic disorders resulting in prenatal or neonatal death are genetically heterogeneous, but testing is often limited by the availability of fetal DNA, leaving couples without a potential prenatal test for future pregnancies. We describe our novel strategy of exome sequencing parental DNA samples to diagnose recessive monogenic disorders in an audit of the first 50 couples referred.MethodExome sequencing was carried out in a consecutive series of 50 couples who had 1 or more pregnancies affected with a lethal or prenatal‐onset disorder. In all cases, there was insufficient DNA for exome sequencing of the affected fetus. Heterozygous rare variants (MAF < 0.001) in the same gene in both parents were selected for analysis. Likely, disease‐causing variants were tested in fetal DNA to confirm co‐segregation.ResultsParental exome analysis identified heterozygous pathogenic (or likely pathogenic) variants in 24 different genes in 26/50 couples (52%). Where 2 or more fetuses were affected, a genetic diagnosis was obtained in 18/29 cases (62%). In most cases, the clinical features were typical of the disorder, but in others, they result from a hypomorphic variant or represent the most severe form of a variable phenotypic spectrum.ConclusionWe conclude that exome sequencing of parental samples is a powerful strategy with high clinical utility for the genetic diagnosis of lethal or prenatal‐onset recessive disorders. © 2017 The Authors Prenatal Diagnosis published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Leadership In Community Public-Private Partnership Health And Social Care Initiatives, Hawa Yatera Mshana, Magdeline Aagard, Cheryl Cullen, Patrick A. Tschida
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Although the public–private partnerships in health have been adopted as the best pathway to improving health outcomes in many developing nations, implementation lacks collaborative leadership. The purpose of this empirical qualitative case study was to determine key factors that promote leadership synergy (LS) between partners that enhance ownership and accountability of community health and social initiatives in Tanzania. The diffusion of innovation theory and public–private integrated partnership module were the theoretical framework guided this study. Diffusion of innovation theory is based on the importance of effective communication to spread new ideas and foster change in behavior in a social group …

The Intersection Of Civic Engagement And Civic Attidues Among Latino Youth Through A Factor Analysis, Nicole Webster, Erica Sausner, Bader Alotaibi, Ashley Patterson
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
The extent to which civic and citizenship education captures the ways Latino youth perceive their roles as social change agents is largely absent from academic literature. This article examines how youth perceptions of and interactions with civic education define the civic lens they apply to their societies. The article examines a new way of interpreting the International Civic and Citizenship Study data and how it investigates new ways to view the civic lens of youth within three Latin American countries. Results of the exploratory factor analysis indicate a three-factor structure of civic lenses and show that youth who have been …

This article republishes—in substantively similar form—our 2018 report to the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS) concerning federal agencies’ adjudicators who are not administrative law judges (ALJs). (We refer to these adjudicators as “non-ALJ Adjudicators” or “non-ALJs.”) As our data indicate, non-ALJs significantly outnumber ALJs. Yet non-ALJs are often overlooked and difficult to discuss as a class because of their disparate titles and characteristics. To obtain more information on non-ALJs, we surveyed agencies on non-ALJs’ hearings and, among other things, the characteristics concerning non-ALJs’ salaries, selection, oversight, and removal. We first present our reported data on these matters, which …

What is international law for? Is the goal to achieve cooperation in providing global public goods, such as managing the environment, providing peace and security, alleviating poverty, controlling the spread of diseases, protecting basic human rights, and supplying best-practices and standards on health and labor? Or is it about managing conflict and competition between states and others by setting expectations and channeling disputes between them into agreed-upon fora for peaceful settlement?
These two types of purpose are often treated as complementary, with international institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO) or United Nations often justified on both counts. But they …
