Forgiveness In Families, Trampas J. Rowden, Sean D. Davis, James M. Harper, Stephen F. Duncan

Forever Families

None of us "does" family perfectly. We sometimes say and do things that offend loved ones. All of us are guilty of "sins" of commission or omission toward those we care about. Forgiveness is an essential part of strong, healthy relationships.

Mealtime Matters, Stephen F. Duncan, Amy Scoville, Jenet J. Erickson Nov 2018

Mealtime Matters, Stephen F. Duncan, Amy Scoville, Jenet J. Erickson

Forever Families

"What's for dinner?" Johnny says to his mom as he comes running into the house, home late from soccer practice and about to be late to piano lessons. Seeing dinner is not yet served, he grabs a bag of chips and some fruit snacks from the pantry and begins eating them on his way to the shower. Dad hasn't arrived from work yet, and the other kids recently finished their snack of graham crackers and chocolate milk. Now they say they don't feel like eating dinner. Mom sits down on the sofa with her microwave dinner and turns on her …

Establishing A Healthy Home Through A Healthy Diet, Allison Barnes, Christine Moore, Stephen F. Duncan

Forever Families

To create a happy home, family members must be both emotionally and physically nourished. As The Family: A Proclamation to the World states, parents have a responsibility to provide for their children’s physical needs. Through small steps, such as encouraging nutrition in the home, families can flourish.

Bridling Anger, Stephen F. Duncan

Forever Families

Anger experts say that anger develops more often in the family--in marriage and with children--than in any other human relationship. Sometimes anger turns violent, resulting in emotional and physical abuse of those that God expects us to love and serve.

Rising Readmission Rates: A National Issue, Elaine Anderson Nov 2018

Rising Readmission Rates: A National Issue, Elaine Anderson

University Honors Program

Recently there has been a rise in hospital readmission rates. As a result of this increase in readmissions, the Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA) was implemented to assist in reducing hospital readmissions. This was done by penalizing hospitals for readmissions associated with the Medicare population. Prior to this research, the effect of this legislation on the readmission rate was unknown. Additionally, the different aspects or factors that contributed to an individual’s risk for being readmitted were unclear. Also it was uncertain how a high verses low nurse-to-patient ratio would affect patient outcomes and the readmission rate. Finally, the effects of being …

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a rare and lethal human malignancy with no known effective therapies in the majority of cases. Despite the use of conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgical resection, this disease remains almost universally fatal. In the present study, we identified the JAK2 inhibitor Lestaurtinib as a potent compound when testing against 13 ATC cell lines. Lestaurtinib demonstrated a potent antiproliferative effect in vitro at nanomolar concentrations. Furthermore, Lestaurtinib impeded cell migration and the ability to form colonies from single cells using scratch-wound and colony formation assays, respectively. Flow cytometry was used for cell cycle …

Receiver-Initiated Handshaking Mac Based On Traffic Estimation For Underwater Sensor Networks, Yuan Dong, Lina Pu, Yu Luo, Zheng Peng, Haining Mo, Yun Meng, Yi Zhao, Yuzhi Zhang

Publications and Research

In underwater sensor networks (UWSNs), the unique characteristics of acoustic channels have posed great challenges for the design of medium access control (MAC) protocols. The long propagation delay problem has been widely explored in recent literature. However, the long preamble problem with acoustic modems revealed in real experiments brings new challenges to underwater MAC design. The overhead of control messages in handshaking-based protocols becomes significant due to the long preamble in underwater acoustic modems. To address this problem, we advocate the receiver-initiated handshaking method with parallel reservation to improve the handshaking efficiency. Despite some existing works along this direction, the data …

Unmasking Whiteness: Progressing Toward Cultural Responsiveness Within A Rti Framework, Melinda F. Scheetz

Dissertations

Response to Intervention (RTI) developed out of educational policies and practices that comprise NCLB and IDEA. RTI is a system to ensure all students receive high-quality instruction that meets their needs, increases opportunities to learn, and prevents reading failure. A culturally relevant RTI framework offers the most promising pedagogical approach to quality instruction and educational equity. The purpose of this study was to understand, describe, and explore the intersection of culturally relevant practices and RTI. The research questions that guided this study were: What can be learned about a culturally responsive approach to RTI by listening to teachers’ perspectives and …

Cloudsat: Iot Approach To Small Satellite Ground Infrastructure, Brian Zufelt Nov 2018

Cloudsat: Iot Approach To Small Satellite Ground Infrastructure, Brian Zufelt

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Over the last decade, the cost of space access has dramatically decreased with the creation of the CubeSat standard. The CubeSat standard defines the structural requirements for an on-orbit deployer and satellite to be placed into orbit. The average cost of creating a space mission with the CubeSat standard can range from $200 thousand to over $3 million. This lower cost has allowed many Universities, and small businesses to create their own space programs. However, a significant portion of the investment for any new space asset is the development of the ground system to communicate with the satellite. These costs …

A Roadmap For Urban Evolutionary Ecology, Sarah E. Diamond, Ryan A. Martin Nov 2018

A Roadmap For Urban Evolutionary Ecology, Sarah E. Diamond, Ryan A. Martin

Faculty Scholarship

Urban ecosystems are rapidly expanding throughout the world, but how urban growth affects the evolutionary ecology of species living in urban areas remains largely unknown. Urban ecology has advanced our understanding of how the development of cities and towns change environmental conditions and alter ecological processes and patterns. However, despite decades of research in urban ecology, the extent to which urbanization influences evolutionary and eco-evolutionary change has received little attention. The nascent field of urban evolutionary ecology seeks to understand how urbanization affects the evolution of populations, and how those evolutionary changes in turn influence the ecological dynamics of populations, …

Who Did It?: A Review On The Possible Causes Of Multiple Sclerosis, Mia Difrancesco Nov 2018

Who Did It?: A Review On The Possible Causes Of Multiple Sclerosis, Mia Difrancesco

D.U.Quark

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an incurable autoimmune disorder that attacks the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells. Steady demyelination of these cells over time results in painful inflammation and reduced mobility. Genetic abnormalities could be responsible for the onset of this disease. Chromosomal mutations found in MS patients as well as environmental factors influencing the expression of certain genes will be analyzed in this review. Moreover, treatments regulating gene expression in MS patients will be discussed. Further genetic research would not only provide scientists and medical professionals with a deeper understanding of MS and other autoimmune disorders, but also lead to …

Implanted Hemodynamic Monitoring In Management Of Significant Right Heart Failure Before And After Lvad Implantation: Creation And Maintenance Of Fontan Physiology In Severe Rv Dysfunction, Kevin Yei, Casey Kaisi, Rajeev Mohan, Ajay Srivastava, J Thomas Heywood

The VAD Journal

In the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) population, right ventricular (RV) failure represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. It is unclear whether hemodynamic monitoring with the implantable CardioMEMS system can improve outcomes within this population. This case report highlights two patients in our clinic who had CardioMEMS implanted after LVAD, enabling us to modify their medical regimens remotely and more frequently in the management of their RV failure.

Sensor-Based Safety Performance Assessment Of Individual Construction Workers, Jeewoong Park, Yong K. Cho, Ali Khodabandelu Nov 2018

Sensor-Based Safety Performance Assessment Of Individual Construction Workers, Jeewoong Park, Yong K. Cho, Ali Khodabandelu

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Over the last decade, researchers have explored various technologies and methodologies to enhance worker safety at construction sites. The use of advanced sensing technologies mainly has focused on detecting and warning about safety issues by directly relying on the detection capabilities of these technologies. Until now, very little research has explored methods to quantitatively assess individual workers’ safety performance. For this, this study uses a tracking system to collect and use individuals’ location data in the proposed safety framework. A computational and analytical procedure/model was developed to quantify the safety performance of individual workers beyond detection and warning. The framework …

Helping Children Adjust To Divorce, Kristi Tanner, Stephen F. Duncan Nov 2018

Helping Children Adjust To Divorce, Kristi Tanner, Stephen F. Duncan

Forever Families

The Family: A Proclamation to the World teaches the vital role of the family “as the fundamental unit of society.” Yet an important personal and family strength is the ability to adapt to less than ideal circumstances, such as those surrounding divorce. Parents who place their children first can protect them to some degree from the most harmful effects of divorce.

Honoring Veterans Means Funding Suicide Prevention, Brendan Cushing-Daniels, Christopher R. Fee

Economics Faculty Publications

Many Americans may not know that it was Dwight D. Eisenhower who in 1954 issued the official proclamation celebrating the service of all veterans by designating Nov. 11, formerly known as Armistice Day, in honor of our vets. Eisenhower, of course, was supreme commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and commander in chief as the 34th president of the United States.

In Ike’s words, “on that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, …

ABSTRACT

In counseling ethics and standards, there is a call to integrate practices and for practitioners to become more aware of other cultures and traditions (Sue, Arrendondo, & McDavis, 1992; Ratts, Singh, Butler, Nassar-McMillan, & McCullough, 2015). Very little research exists that addresses when the Western mental health practitioner and the traditional healer are …
