Elite Bmx Cyclists Use Individual Strategies For A Successful Start, Ina Janssen, Annelies Oude Alink, Finn Frielink

ISBS Proceedings Archive

A fast start during BMX racing is strongly related to superior performance. The purpose of this study was to identify which aspects of starting technique were related to a further distance after 1 second, an indication of an advantageous starting position. Significant between-cyclists differences were found in set position kinematics and starting technique. Whilst each cyclist had specific aspects of the start related to superior performance, two of the cyclists had strong correlations with vertical velocity of the bicycle at gate drop and at 1 second, indicating the higher the wheel was lifted, the further the distance reached after 1 …

Determination Of The Optimal Number Of Rigid-Body Segments To Represent The Trunk Using Akaike’S Information Criterion, Shoma Kudo, Masahiro Fujimoto, Takahiko Sato, Akinori Nagano

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal number of rigid body segments to sufficiently represent the trunk movements, using Akaike’s information criterion. The trunk in static and dynamic conditions was modelled with one, two, three, or six linked rigid-body representations. The difference in the three-dimensional position between the actual and modelled data was calculated to quantify how well these models describe the actual trunk kinematics. The Akaike’s information criterion was calculated using the difference in position data to evaluate the goodness-of-fit for each model. Our findings suggest that two-linked rigid-body representation may be good enough when analysing …

Self-Organising Map Analysis Of Rugby Placekicking Biomechanics, Kim Hébert-Losier, Christopher Martyn Beaven, Peter Lamb

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Our aim was to use a self-organising map (SOM) to examine key biomechanical variables previously identified to discriminate best from worst placekicking attempts. Placekicker and ball 3D biomechanics were acquired from three competitive placekickers who performed 10 kicks outdoors, 35-m from the posts. Seven key variables were extracted for SOM analysis and kicks were categorised into "best", "typical", and "worst" for each placekicker based on kick outcomes and player and coach ratings. SOM output indicated that three clusters best explained intra-cluster similarities and inter-cluster differences. The three clusters highlighted differences between the biomechanical variables of the three placekickers rather than …

Influence Of Trunk Model Dof On Shoulder Kinematics In Javelin Throwing - A Case Study, Karen Roemer, Hans-Peter Koehler, Maren Witt

ISBS Proceedings Archive

A case study was conducted to clarify the influence of different body-models and modelling approaches on shoulder joint kinematics. Therefore, a single subject performed a javelin throw. The recorded movement was analyzed using two different modeling approaches using two different body models each. Results from the two different body models are highly comparable, while comparability of model approach specific results depend on the movement direction. Source of the difference between movement directions may be the model specific location of center of rotation in the shoulder joint.

Ankle Joint Complex Kinematic And Kinetic Adaptation During Thirty-Minutes Of Treadmill Running: A Case Study, Sydni Wilhoite Ms, Li Li, Jessica Mutchler, Barry Munkasy

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to assess kinematic and kinetic adaptation during a 30 min run. It was hypothesized that kinematics and kinetics would adapt at different rates. A recreationally trained runner with approximately 10 years of running experience was recruited for the study. Three dimensional kinematic and kinetic variables were assessed during a 30 min run. All measures exhibited varied adaptation trends with most measures not stabilizing during the exercise period. A longer running period may be needed in running gait analysis to produce a more comprehensive adaptation profile.

Changes In Lower Extremity Stiffness With Triathlon Specific Training, Anna Lorimer, Patria Hume, Justin Keogh Nov 2018

Changes In Lower Extremity Stiffness With Triathlon Specific Training, Anna Lorimer, Patria Hume, Justin Keogh

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Achilles tendon injuries are problematic for triathletes ranked as the most severe injuries in club and development athletes. As an overuse injury, Achilles tendon injures were proposed to be the result of a combination of risk factors, requiring measurements which incorporated multiple risk factors. Stiffness was identified to be a measure that was influenced by many of the risk factors for Achilles injury. In a one-year prospective study, 75 triathletes were followed to determine the association between measures of lower extremity stiffness and the risk of developing an Achilles injury. Triathletes who developed a new or reoccurring injury during the …
