West Nile virus (WNV) infection results in a spectrum of neurological symptoms, ranging from a benign fever to severe WNV neuroinvasive disease with high mortality. Many who recover from WNV neuroinvasive infection present with long-term deficits, including weakness, fatigue, and cognitive problems. While neurons are a main target of WNV, other cell types, especially astrocytes, play an important role in promoting WNV-mediated central nervous system (CNS) damage. Conversely, it has been shown that cultured primary astrocytes secrete high levels of interferons (IFNs) immediately after WNV exposure to protect neighboring astrocytes, as well as neurons. However, how intrinsic responses to WNV …

Investigating Diversity In Social Work Doctoral Education In The United States, Matthew Chin, Jaclynn Hawkins, Amy Krings, Carolyn Peguero-Spencer, Lorraine Gutiérrez

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite its emphasis on social justice, social work in the United States has not always attended to issues of diversity in doctoral education. This article examines the state of the discipline’s research on traditionally underrepresented students in U.S. doctoral social work programs. An analysis of relevant peer-reviewed articles from social work journals revealed that this research has focused on demographic trends, degree motivation, student barriers, existing supports, and career navigation. Diversity in U.S. doctoral social work education is vastly understudied with the majority of scholarship focusing on ethnoracial difference. The limitations of this study are discussed, and future research directions …

Loma Linda University Student Journal

Mucosal melanoma is rare, comprising only 1.4% of all melanomas in the United States. Yet it is associated with a worse prognosis compared to cutaneous melanoma due to aggressive biology and advanced stage at diagnosis with a reported 5-year survival rate of less than 30%. Although there are no established guidelines for the treatment of mucosal melanoma, immunotherapy has been increasingly used for the management of advanced mucosal melanoma.

Bovine mammary gland biopsies allow researchers to collect tissue samples to study cell biology including gene expression, histological analysis, signaling pathways, and protein translation. This article describes two techniques for biopsy of the bovine mammary gland (MG). Three healthy Holstein dairy cows were the subjects. Before biopsies, cows were milked and subsequently restrained in a cattle chute. An analgesic (flunixin meglumine, 1.1 to 2.2 mg/kg of body weight) was administered via jugular intravenous [IV] injection 15-20 min prior to biopsy. For standing sedation, xylazine hydrochloride (0.01-0.05 mg/kg of body weight) was injected via the coccygeal vessels 5-10 min before the …

Sarcoidosis Presenting As Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome., Bilal Lashari, Ahmad Raza, Vincent Chan, William Ward

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown origin. It typically involves the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes in a chronic fashion. However, acute syndrome has been reported possibly in response to systemic release of proinflammatory cytokines. Acute pulmonary manifestations, especially acute respiratory failure or acute respiratory distress syndrome, remain extremely uncommon in individuals without a prior diagnosis. We present the case of a 41-year-old African American female, who presented with ARDS. An extensive workup into the cause of her illness remained negative, and she subsequently succumbed to her illness. A diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made upon autopsy, after exclusion …

Reflections Of Hajj And Umrah Pilgrimage On Religious Stores In Mugla-Turkey, Onur Akbulut, Yakin Ekin

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Islam’s Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages comprise two of the oldest forms of religious tourism. Hajj and Umrah have some specific features which come from the Holy Quran and thus, those individuals wanting to participate in the pilgrimages have a number of needs and requirements, both before and after their journey. Therefore, this study is intended to present a profile of religious stores based on a tourist’s origin and destination. It concentrates on a relatively less studied component of pilgrimage tourism, this being religious stores, which mainly cater for potential pilgrims of Hajj and Umrah. These stores provide a contribution to …

Stroke Clinical Order Pathway Education (Scope) For Apns, Varsha Singh

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

More than 795,000 American adults have a stroke annually. About 610,000 are first or new strokes. Almost 140,000 Americans of all ages die of a stroke every year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017). Stroke requires emergent treatment and an exact clinical order pathway to ensure better patient outcomes and compliance with the standards of care defined by regulatory bodies such as the Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). While stroke management teams often include an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), there is a lack of a standardized protocol across New Jersey (NJ) …

Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek Dec 2018

Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek

Faculty Articles

Three-dimensional (3-D) virtual environments have key affordances that can improve learning, particularly when context, culture, and pedagogical aims are aligned to a given learning situation. One challenge in detailing effective uses of 3-D virtual environments in teaching and learning contexts is that the design judgments involved are not always made explicit. We argue that the transparency of design judgments, as it relates to the use of 3-D virtual environments, are critically important. This article advances scholarship of emerging technologies by detailing the design judgments of a university instructor within a Design for Social Impact cross-disciplinary course. To address learner needs …

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted on Dec 10, 1948, established a modern human rights foundation that has become a cornerstone of global health, central to public health policies, programmes, and practices. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of this seminal declaration, we trace the evolution of human rights in global health, linking the past, present, and future of health as a human right. This future remains uncertain. As contemporary challenges imperil continuing advancements, threatening both human rights protections and global health governance, the future will depend, as it has in the past, on sustained political engagement to realise human …

Purpose: Slowed speech and interruptions to the flow of connected speech are common in aphasia. These features are also observed during dual task performance for neurotypical adults. The purposes of this study were to determine (a) whether indices of fluency related to cognitive-linguistic versus motor processing would differ between speakers with aphasia plus AOS and speakers with aphasia only and (b) whether cognitive load reduces fluency in speakers with aphasia with and without AOS.

Method: Fourteen speakers with aphasia (seven with AOS) and seven neurotypical controls retold short stories alone (single task) and while simultaneously distinguishing between a high and …

A Dual System Model Of Risk And Time Preferences, Mark Schneider Dec 2018

A Dual System Model Of Risk And Time Preferences, Mark Schneider

ESI Working Papers

Discounted Expected Utility theory has been a workhorse in economic analysis for over half a century. However, it cannot explain empirical violations of 'dimensional independence' demonstrating that risk interacts with time preference and time interacts with risk preference, nor does it explain present bias or magnitude-dependence in risk and time preferences, or correlations between risk preference, time preference, and cognitive reflection. We demonstrate that these and other anomalies are explained by a dual system model of risk and time preferences that unless models of a rational economic agent, models based on prospect theory, and dual process models of decision making.

From Biopolitics To Biopoetics: A Hypothesis On The Relationship Between Life And Writing, Julieta Yelin Dec 2018

From Biopolitics To Biopoetics: A Hypothesis On The Relationship Between Life And Writing, Julieta Yelin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The objective of this article is to examine the theoretical potential of the dialogues between literary critique and biopolitical thought, with an analysis centered on a reconsideration of the concept of interpretation. In order to accomplish this, we analyze the shift in Michel Foucault’s thought around the beginning of the 1970s, a time during which the notion of life took prominence over the study of literature as a specific discipline. From this transformation, a particular way of approaching both literary and, generally speaking, artistic creations can be derived that would give rise to a biopoetics perspective.

As the legal industry gradually integrates artificial intelligence (AI) into its practice, the underlying technology continues to advance at a fever pitch. Machine learning platforms arguably represent the pinnacle of AI development, and this technology currently augments and replicates intelligent human tasks in ways never before conceived. The business applications of machine learning are bearing fruit across a spectrum of industries and professions. Yet despite machine learning’s demonstrated promise, its forays into the legal industry have been uneven. In fact, the most advanced forms of machine learning have been relegated primarily to lower-level attorney tasks such as e-discovery, due-diligence, and …

Socializing In The Halls? Chinese First-Year Experiences Of Residence Climate, Jamie Chong Brown, Nasser A. Razek

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

Composing the largest nationality of international students at American universities, Chinese undergraduate students in the United States have dramatically increased over the previous decade (Institute of International Education, 2014). Despite the extensive research on the challenges facing Chinese students in the American classroom, in-depth research on the residence hall socialization process for Chinese students remains lacking (Briguglio & Smith, 2012). This mixed methods study assessed first-year Chinese students’ perceptions of racial climate and community in residence halls at a mid-sized Midwestern private institution. Quantitative data indicated that the students’ attitude toward floor acceptance and racial harmony correlates with their perceived …

Members of minority populations are forced to hide behind a mask of stereotypes others associate to them. Individuals who feel fraudulent when they fulfill certain stereotypes, associate their success to external forces, define the problem as impostor syndrome (IS). The paper focuses on the prevalence and relevance of IS on college campuses. The session will explore the affect and effect of IS from different cultural lenses and discuss possible preventive and coping strategies for academic and mental health professionals. The purpose is to ‘unmask’ the impostor syndrome caused by stereotypes and stereotype threats that prevents individuals from reaching ‘new heights’ …
